  • Zimbabwe's military has placed President Robert Mugabe under house arrest in the capital Harare, South African President Jacob Zuma says.
Mr Mugabe told Mr Zuma in a phone call that he was fine, the South African leader's office said.
Troops are patrolling the capital, Harare, after they seized state TV and said they were targeting "criminals".
The move may be a bid to replace Mr Mugabe with his sacked deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, BBC correspondents say.
Mr Mnangagwa's dismissal last week left Mr Mugabe's wife Grace as the president's likely successor.

I disagree, because the resentment against dictatorship is so strong now that the people will never let freedom out of their hands again in this lifetime. If it wasn't for certain events such as the reintroduction of the "bond" currency this year for instance, many opinions would not be as they are now. It's also easy to forget with a country like Zimbabwe that the motions against Mugabe have been going on for a VERY long time with each attempt adding to the death-toll. This has been commendable in that there's been no real resistance.

Tarquin Bristow. Ehm...freedom?? Resentment against dictatorship?? So far we´ve seen one part of the regime (army, war veterans) taking over the power from other part of that same regime (Mugabe family, police). Both fractions are part of ZANU-PF power monopol. If I see any free elections after this, only then will I believe this was "freedom vs. dictatorship".

Thabo-- People were a lot better off under colonialism. That being said, black people should've been incorporated into the govt as well; that was a mistake. But seriously, it's embarrassing that almost 40 years later, Zim has gone from the bread basket of Southern Africa to the basket case of Southern Africa. The rate of inflation so bad that a meal could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (we've got lots of Zim bills- we're millionaires!) It's just complete greed, corruption, incompetency and mismanagement that has flushed Zim down the toilet- but of course, it's still whitey's fault. Probably always will be. Like almost every other african leader, Mugarbage didn't want to let go of his position of power.... and now wants his wife to take over. Beggars belief.

Katarina Smith colonialism completely ruined Africa. It wasn’t perfect before it was colonised but it was a lot better than it is now. African nations didn’t benefit in the slightest from European imperialism. Our attitude that we were more ‘civilised’ fucked the whole place up. Our arbitrary drawing of the borders fucked the place up. Our decolonisation without ensuring stable non abusive governments were in place fucked the place up.

This is a CMO (civil military operations) interpretation of what is occurring in Zimbabwe at the moment.
Civil Military Operations in the true sense of the word. This is all in accordance with International Humanitarian Law where the military take over to reinstate peace for the people of Zimbabwe. The country has slowly but surely been taken over by a group of individuals that have no concern for the people of Zimbabwe. DEFCON 1 has taken place moving out to DEFCON 2.
They now have to have peaceful elections with an elected leader voted in by the majority of citizens. The military then withdraw as an over seeing body allowing peace to prevail and moving out to DEFCON 5 which is total peace within the borders of Zimbabwe.
We need to remember that the military are the overall overseeing body that maintains order over the country at all times.
They are supposed to be absolutely neutral in their approach to maintaining peace for its citizens.
When the president who is democratically elected goes "rogue" and runs the country as if it is their own business as opposed to looking after the population within the country the military is obliged to step in with CMO to bring back the balance in favour of the people again. This is the ideal solution to the situation.
We always need to remember it is all about uplifting the community and nothing else so that they are able to have a good quality of life within the borders of the said country. The police, military, civil servants, politicians and state president are servants of the citizens of the country.

    Rise, O voices of Rhodesia,
God may we Thy bounty share.
Give us strength to face all danger,
And where challenge is, to dare.
Guide us, Lord, to wise decision,
    Ever of Thy grace aware,
Oh, let our hearts beat bravely always
For this land within Thy care.
    Rise, O voices of Rhodesia,
    Bringing her your proud acclaim,
    Grandly echoing through the mountains,
Rolling o'er the far flung plain.
    Roaring in the mighty rivers,
    Joining in one grand refrain,
    Ascending to the sunlit heavens,
    Telling of her honoured name.
