- Zimbabwe's military has placed President Robert Mugabe under house arrest in the capital Harare, South African President Jacob Zuma says.
Mr Mugabe told Mr Zuma in a phone call that he was fine, the South African leader's office said.
Troops are patrolling the capital, Harare, after they seized state TV and said they were targeting "criminals".
The move may be a bid to replace Mr Mugabe with his sacked deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, BBC correspondents say.
Mr Mnangagwa's dismissal last week left Mr Mugabe's wife Grace as the president's likely successor.

He be like "you serious bruh?" 😂
Gosh it took them time to do the right thing, this needed to have been done years back...............
I disagree, because the resentment against dictatorship is so strong now that the people will never let freedom out of their hands again in this lifetime. If it wasn't for certain events such as the reintroduction of the "bond" currency this year for instance, many opinions would not be as they are now. It's also easy to forget with a country like Zimbabwe that the motions against Mugabe have been going on for a VERY long time with each attempt adding to the death-toll. This has been commendable in that there's been no real resistance.
Tarquin Bristow. Ehm...freedom?? Resentment against dictatorship?? So far we´ve seen one part of the regime (army, war veterans) taking over the power from other part of that same regime (Mugabe family, police). Both fractions are part of ZANU-PF power monopol. If I see any free elections after this, only then will I believe this was "freedom vs. dictatorship".

Slow to learn, despite the warnings before & after. Go figure. Leave them to it.

NaNa Marze underrated comment
was just about to comment on this, bbc is so shit.
Funny that the correspondent's name translates to 'persevere snake'
About time. Abused his position, and ruined so may people's lives.
Katarina Smith just because Mugabe was bad it doesn’t the British were good. We can acknowledge that Mugabe was a terrible leader without pretending that somehow British colonialism good for us
Thabo-- People were a lot better off under colonialism. That being said, black people should've been incorporated into the govt as well; that was a mistake. But seriously, it's embarrassing that almost 40 years later, Zim has gone from the bread basket of Southern Africa to the basket case of Southern Africa. The rate of inflation so bad that a meal could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (we've got lots of Zim bills- we're millionaires!) It's just complete greed, corruption, incompetency and mismanagement that has flushed Zim down the toilet- but of course, it's still whitey's fault. Probably always will be. Like almost every other african leader, Mugarbage didn't want to let go of his position of power.... and now wants his wife to take over. Beggars belief.
Katarina Smith...u can go to hell wit dat logic u creep...colonialism was never good for Africa...why can't u why ppl stay out of Africa..Africa don't need whites
Just heard on the news that Zimbabwe has between 60-80% unemployment. LOL! Yeah, doing just fine! And have you seen that corpse mugarbage- now that's creepy!
Katarina Smith colonialism completely ruined Africa. It wasn’t perfect before it was colonised but it was a lot better than it is now. African nations didn’t benefit in the slightest from European imperialism. Our attitude that we were more ‘civilised’ fucked the whole place up. Our arbitrary drawing of the borders fucked the place up. Our decolonisation without ensuring stable non abusive governments were in place fucked the place up.
It took long Enough ......Mugabe has been the Worst thing to Happen to that Country
I think you meant British colonialism is the worst thing to ever happen to Zimbabwe.
@ Bennypazza When you don't have a logical response to a person you resort to personal attacks? How do you expect me to take you seriously? You need to carry your ignorance elsewhere.
gerard bain British Colonialism built Zimbabwe, sweetie.
Mugabe's vile, racist, tyrannical dictatorship ruined what prosperity they had utterly and completely.
To be fair, at least the British brought about developments in infrastructure as well as political and economic stability, more than can be said bout Mugabe.
King Edward "Longshanks" I, Hammer of the Scots, Lord of Wales and King of England colonialism didn't build a country, the purpose was to to exploit the country Eisenstein.
Uh-oh, cue one panicking BBC employee trying to work out which intern to blame for forgetting the subtitle translations...!
lol I was like WTF
I hope they drag Mugabe out of his mansion.
Uhh, shouldn't there be subtitles for the people speaking around 5:00?

nice little song shoehorned in at the start of his interview
Thanks for sharing.
THANK GOD..its a start
Of all military coup d'état that happen around the world, I personally think that this was nessesary.
At least the military have the balls to say "oi your trying to turn this into a dictatorship stop, this is not North Korea."
Hope there not gonna be a war happening over there in Zimbabwe
Epic Hanad I hope that never happens
I just saw the news on Zimbabwe right now and wrapping my head around what's exactly going on is sketchy and trusting everything uploaded to CZcams isn't the best way to go...... :(
I hope there is a war which would restore Rhodesia
How is BoJo STILL the foreign secretary? :O
Maybe it's because his initials are humorous.
nice interview, shame i cant speak zimbabweian
Chem Welsh it’s called Shona or Ndebele
Basically the locals were just saying they're happy that Mugabe is in this position and they look forward to enjoying Christmas as they feel that the yoke of the dictator has been removed
You have to limit Presidents to a certain number of years.
And not give them complete control over the entire country
Don't worry, Mugabe will just print more money as usual and save the day.
Stefano DrSAM He can't... They using US dollar
Stefano DrSAM - Lol, not this time. His wife had made moves to oust political adversaries to pave the way for her to take over the leadership. The country isn't going to tolerate his crazy wife.
Hope everything turns out ok
Thydar the people of Zimbabwe can now take their country back

Not good enough BBC.
I didn't think the situation could get any worse, and then Boris Johnson appeared.
I wish I didn't have to go to other countries' news sources to get a solid 15 minute explanation on this.
So so sad 😔
The military should hold the power on till the country is stable.they have proved their power and the best military in Africa,we will support you now in all your doing thank you.
Its a lesson that must be learned by Head Of States who cling into power for life, I hope Museveni learns from this situation

05:04 best reaction to the news, the guy in the background.
Renaming the airport after himself... what an ego. The Queen did that to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. It's now called the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
i would have called it the me me me hospital
There are lots of queen elizebeth hospitals just to let you know.
The queen herself wasn't the one who chose to rename the hospitals, have likely been some committee, either in government or at the hospital. Mugabe most likely chose to rename the airport himself to his name
Omg he said his name right 😍 2:50
Btw 3:14 does Boris know what the hairdressers are for🤔
Right?!🤦🏾♂️😅 Rare af
I wish them peace love and unite may God bless zimbambwe citizen and also the whole world
God's got nothing to do with it. It's called free will. Robert Mugabe and his like wrecked Zimbabwe and it is only people who will put it right...a good start would be to bring back the farmers who knew how to run big agriculture and at least they'll be able to feed themselves.
fuck off fuck all ti do wi god he doesnt even exist
if everyone was loving hearted like Halma the world would be nicer & further away from extinction. If ur understanding is so much better than hers then why aren't u more loving-hearted?

Good luck rebuilding Zimbabwe 📈🌻🌿🌾
Is the situation very fluid? Couldn’t tell
Sad...
Just let Rhodesia return
Has Boris not got a comb?

The British Foreign minster couldn't hide the smile

if there is an end to corruption and the people can be happy, then it`s right.
The British Government, has decided to stop supporting Mugabe. Got it.
Little do they know it's only the beginning of the worst timeline in zimbabwe
Rhodesia
This should be the things that should be happening in North Korea

This is a CMO (civil military operations) interpretation of what is occurring in Zimbabwe at the moment.
Civil Military Operations in the true sense of the word. This is all in accordance with International Humanitarian Law where the military take over to reinstate peace for the people of Zimbabwe. The country has slowly but surely been taken over by a group of individuals that have no concern for the people of Zimbabwe. DEFCON 1 has taken place moving out to DEFCON 2.
They now have to have peaceful elections with an elected leader voted in by the majority of citizens. The military then withdraw as an over seeing body allowing peace to prevail and moving out to DEFCON 5 which is total peace within the borders of Zimbabwe.
We need to remember that the military are the overall overseeing body that maintains order over the country at all times.
They are supposed to be absolutely neutral in their approach to maintaining peace for its citizens.
When the president who is democratically elected goes "rogue" and runs the country as if it is their own business as opposed to looking after the population within the country the military is obliged to step in with CMO to bring back the balance in favour of the people again. This is the ideal solution to the situation.
We always need to remember it is all about uplifting the community and nothing else so that they are able to have a good quality of life within the borders of the said country. The police, military, civil servants, politicians and state president are servants of the citizens of the country.
Quin Elizabeth she must go! How long shes been in power? British will never rue Zimbabwe, leave Africans alone..
Mugabe is gone
Wow the world is really going to shit
Finally. I wished it could have happened long ago.
3:56 Teddy Long is that you?
Good to see Boris and the BBC together - two national embarrassments at the same time
It's been 6 years and still a latest update..
Great leaders is measured by how they exit office......
The whole African continent is on autopilot currently.
Rise, O voices of Rhodesia,
God may we Thy bounty share.
Give us strength to face all danger,
And where challenge is, to dare.
Guide us, Lord, to wise decision,
Ever of Thy grace aware,
Oh, let our hearts beat bravely always
For this land within Thy care.
Rise, O voices of Rhodesia,
Bringing her your proud acclaim,
Grandly echoing through the mountains,
Rolling o'er the far flung plain.
Roaring in the mighty rivers,
Joining in one grand refrain,
Ascending to the sunlit heavens,
Telling of her honoured name.
At last common sense has finally prevailed and that monster can step down. Thank goodness. Power to the people👍
What happened
