  • Finally! I have discovered how to make easy honey straws!!!
    I have made honey sticks for years but our method has been tedious and slow. I have been in contact with Tony and Adam at Anthony's Beehive and obtained two different honey stick filling machines from them. In this video I show 3 different ways to fill the straws. Tony and Adam have created a couple of really nice products and have been very great to work with. They have helped me through the process of trying these machines. It has been an enjoyable experience!

    I got my Gold Rush honey stick filling machine and WOW!!! Its simple, yet brilliant, design make it so easy to use and it's super efficient! I timed everything out and once the initial set-up is completed it takes approximately 12 minutes to fill 40 straws; 4 minutes to load the straws, 4 minutes to fill the straws when the machine runs, and 4 minutes to remove the filled straws. I filled 640 straws in under 4 hours (this didn't include sealing them, which I did the following day). I'm so happy with this machine!!!!!! Thanks for the video Bruce - you took all the guesswork out of the set up, and thanks to you there was very little learning curve to tackle.

      If you sell a lot of straws it is worth it. Both machines simplify the process. Of course the larger Goldrush machine is a big investment but speeds things up dramatically once the process is figured out.

    I've been contemplating doing Honey straws for a while now.
    Still not sure I want to add them to my product line up, but I have seen this Gold Rush filling machine, and definitely think if someone's wanting to do them on more than just a small scale, this is definitely the machine to get.

      Thanks Richard. Be sure to use the code. 10 percent is significant. There is a learning curve but it is pretty darn cool. Jamey Wynn has had one for awhile and likes it. I had already talked to him about it. They were a little hard to get ahold of until recently. They are able to produce them faster now. It has been kind of fun working through the process with Tony and Adam. Good folks.

    Pretty nice machines. He’s got the corner on the market for sure. I look at them every year and have yet to justify the cost. Loading that big wheel takes about the same time for me to fill about 30 straws by hand, so I keep telling myself I’m saving money😁😂. I like his sealer. As mine is starting to be less efficient, I might need to look up that brand of sealer. I also made a straw holder from wood so I can seal multiple straws. I think that’s where the time savings really comes in. Thanks for sharing this review Bruce!

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  Před 10 měsíci

      Link to the sealer: a.co/d/eyBDzii. I think once you get set up and in a rhythm could probably do a run of 40 straws with the Goldrush machine every 10 to 15 minutes. Would be much faster with 2 people. The Honey Stream is also pretty quick I would say. I like the machines. Filling straws by hand can be so tedious. There is definitely a learning curve though. Especially with the larger machine.

    Wonderful review of the Goldrush Machine.
    Once you figured everything out (honey temp, straw installation and tube adjustments), on average how many straws would you say could be filled and sealed in an hour?
    If there is more honey in the hub than what straws can take, does the honey seep out until adding another batch of straws? Or is there an auto closure in hub to prevent leakage?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  Před 4 měsíci +1

      My wife and I did 320 straws in a couple of hours one night. Yes if overfilled will seep. It can be a little messy but works well for the most part. The actual filling of the states is very fast. The sealing and loading /unloading of the machine are what take the most time.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  Před 4 měsíci +1

      And we had one straw that was not sealed good the last time we made straws. And they turned into a mess. But that has only happened a time or two.

    I've seen other honey stick machines that were not impressive but the goldrush machine looks like it might be one to consider. I'm still wondering though with the cost of the machine and labor is it worth buying honey sticks prefilled.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  Před 10 měsíci +1

      That is a decision you will have to weigh and decide. If you sell a lot of straws I think it is worth it. Plus it is your own honey. If not then the smaller machine might be worth considering.

    Cool idea!! Thx.
    Off topic, I have a question Bruce. I’ve been having lots of trouble Requeening one of my hives. They have killed three new queens. So with the fourth and hopefully last queen, I’ve let them become hopelessly queenless. No larva are left. Removed all attempts at queen cells. Then caged the queen over some honey and capped brood using a 4”x4”pushin cage. She will stay in there for five days so she can start laying and increase her pheromones. My question is, will the bees in the hive feed her through the hardware close wire? I would assume so but wanted to ask.
    Any other tips? Grateful for you. Brad

      Now that you've got me thinking about doing Honey straws, I could see myself doing maybe a 6 pack for $5. Not sure I would sell them as singles since I believe (at least Texas law) they would need to be labeled according to the label laws. Labeling a bundle of 5 or 6, etc. wouldn't be so bad, but labeling each individual straw would really cut into profits.
