it seems that mower needs a locking differential. would also suggest some protection from the mud for the drive beltprobably a lot easier to use a winch to pull the mower rather than jerking on a chain
I got a new mower for free, 18 horse oppy, “6 speed” trans. The engine ran after cleaning a mouse nest but surged so bad but it did kind of drive. Drives in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Reverse, 5, 6 are blown out so I need a new transaxle. Well it was free so it doesn’t matter.
That thing looks like a Craftsman 2 back half and a weird Murray front half lol. When I was born almost 17 years ago that was my frist mower. It really didn't run right .

craftsman 2nd gen or the older craftsman 2 are good, the 1st gen are ok, but the steering is weak, the murray lt widebody is good , they're my preference, but basically as chud327 said anything in fair condition at a price you can live with is a good base, if you plan to hit really deep nasty mud I would recommend staying away from anything hydrostat, although chud327s john deer has surprised me with what it's been able to go through
