- You could just play video games on your video game console. For me, that's just not enough. Too boring! I want to do horrible things to my game consoles. Thankfully, there's a whole community built around the idea of making game consoles do things they were never supposed to do. Homebrew has been around for the longest time, and the communities around these hacked systems have been producing some incredibly impressive software for the longest time... but it's weird. Lately, we're seeing a lot of concerning shifts happening within the industry that just can't be overlooked.

I never got a ban for having still mocha on my Wii U i even played hours and hours the pirated version of MK8 online same with the 3DS
It's quite hard to get banned on Wii U or 3DS because of how little they can detect, I wonder what you did.

Modded my 3DS last year, the Wii early this year, and the Wii U over a month ago. In the short time that I’ve had these systems modded, I’ve enjoyed them way more than I had in the past and it really unlocks a lot of potential for rom hacks, emulators and other stuff.
I’m planning on getting a v1 switch soon to mod that as well!

The steam deck is a tinker's paradise, but like you said it's kinda hard to call it homebrew if valve is giving you the keys to the castle right off the bat.

I wish there was home consoles like the Steam Deck! Being able to add and do anything you want to a full home console would be so cool! But then how could Nintendo charge you a monthly subscription to rent NES, SNES and Gameboy roms (or a more expensive subscription service to rent GBA, Genesis, and (poorly emulated) N64 roms) when you can just add your own roms (including whatever improvement rom hacks you want, like Zelda 2 Redux) and fan made emulators that runs laps around Nintendo's official emulators? How can they make releasing a collection of Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy for $60 a big event when people can just play better versions of these games on Switch already for free? Console manufacturers don't let you do whatever you want with your system because they want you to be at their mercy for whatever they decide to give you privilege of buying. They want to be able to bring out an old classic from the Disney vault and be celebrated just for bringing it out of the vault while putting in no effort to present these games in any sort of ways that does them justice as the retro works of art that they are. These corporations don't want to have to compete with their fans, because then they would need to actually put in work and couldn't get away with the absolute bare minimum. If Nintendo had to actually compete with it's fans to make rereleasing Mario 64 a big deal, the only way would be a full remake that reimagines the game for modern hardware, but since they do everything they can to stomp down fans trying to mod the Switch, and even fan projects on PC, they can get away with slapping an N64 rom on the Switch and you have all the Nintendo fanboys saying we should be thankful that they gave us the privilege of buying 3 roms for $60

In the first year I got my Wii in 2009, I got the homebrew channel. I can't imagine the wii without it! It felt badass installing homebrew when you're 15.

I installed homebrew on mine in 2012, but I was only 13. I have no clue how I didn't screw it up, but ever since I couldn't imagine using a Wii without homebrew on it.
The number of Wii consoles I have rescued from flea markets, garage sales, FB marketplace sales, Goodwills, etc., and then modded and gifted to friends (or sold). By far the easiest hack to date with Letterbomb. And I can still remember when you had to do it using LEGO Indiana Jones - night and day difference for ease of install!

I LOVE messing around with closed source or locked down Operating Systems, Finding ways to get around it and make use of old hardware. So I understand the need to do this XD. These videos are very well done!

I modded my Wii in 2012, I was 13 years old. That was what got me very interested in homebrew from then on, and I can't believe how far the homebrew community has come. I adore how many consoles you can softmod now, even the PS1. Homebrew is amazing, and it's amazing for things like game preservation. Thanks for the great video, game console homebrew is amazing!

As someone that's been modding for a very long time (got a PSP, Wii, PS3, PS4, Vita, 3DS, Wii U, Switch all modded) I often just mod consoles for the sake of it. Often find that once that's done I actually don't know what else to do.. 😅

Modded many systems here. 3DS XL, PSP, PSVita, Xbox 360 RGH, Wii U, and several PS3s. Definitely gives me more use out of those old boxes I got bored of years ago. I tried to modchip a Switch Lite but I broke it :C
Piracy is a hot issue but on the other hand, the Wii, DSi, 3DS, and Wii U had their respective stores shut down making it impossible to download games (and DLC in the case of the 3DS and Wii U) without hacking the console. In fact, hacking is the only way to acquire Virtual Console games, games with digital releases, and DLC on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Also, piracy is the only way to get games that are delisted such as Wolfenstien (2009) (which hasn't been sold or released on modern consoles) and _Marvel's Avengers_ (which got delisted recently), or the original versions of games like Dead Island/Dead Island Riptide and the Grand Theft Auto "trilogy" games (III, Vice City, and San Andreas). Lastly, some older games are notorious for being expensive namely the Pokémon games and most GameCube games where an old game can easily exceed $60-$70 for a new game.
The ability to use other Bluetooth controllers on the Wii U is interesting especially considering the issue of fake Wii U Pro Controllers flooding Amazon and eBay which like the fake GameCube and Wii controllers, these controllers are awful and there's no good modern third-party alternative for the Wii or Wii U.
It's interesting why Sony never used emulation to play PS2 games like they do with PS1 where all models can play PlayStation games although some PS1 games (at least the disc ones) can have issues on PS3. I know Tomba 2 (Tombi 2) has issues where the music doesn't play correctly and Spyro 2 has problems where the music stops playing where these issues never occur on an actual PlayStation or PSone.
There has been attention of Microsoft blocking emulators on Xbox Series X|S which turns out was due to a policy forbidding emulation. Many thought Nintendo was a reason especially considering that Nintendo doesn't want people to run games, especially Switch games, on non-Nintendo devices particularly the Steam Deck even though the Deck wasn't intended for emulation. It's similar to an issue in the mid-late 2000s and the 2010s (following when Apple switched to Intel Core/Xeon) where people installed Mac OS X (macOS) on non-Apple computers which Apple's EULA doesn't allow.
The way I see it now, even with the latest locks imposed on the most current generations, someone is bound to eventually crack the code, even if it takes a couple more years.
I certainly hope so. It's a little disheartening seeing how well the strategy has worked so far, but the homebrew community can and has done some absolutely insane stuff before. Only time well tell. Thanks for watching :)
One thing I love the most about homebrew is that it allows us to preserve things like DLC, update patches, and digital only games so we can enjoy them forever.

Unfortunately I am a liar and I just put a screenshot up because it looked funny lmao. I have gotten Vista running under virt-manager (on qemu) but never got graphics acceleration working, I think an older version of Virtualbox with Vista compatible Guest additions might work though. I was a bit skeptical of homebrewing at first, but after homebrewing my Wii during lockdown, my mindset has changed to having more appreciation for the homebrewing communities to the point of modding both my New 3DS XL and old 3DS as well as my Wii U. I find it impossible now to play Nintendo consoles without homebrew, hence why I'm never going to bother with the Switch.
I modded my fat PS3 in May, I loved using it at first because of the flexibility and the fact I didn't need to use the drive to play games all the time. But then I ended up realising that my ps3 was one of the first manufactured (being made less than a year after release, so around October 2007), this meant that my PS3 could die at any moment due to thermal issues and honestly I don't want to delid it at all and end up breaking anything fragile. Even if I wanted to just do a thermal replacement on the top of the CPU and GPU its just not enough because up until the PS3 Slim, Nvidia ended up giving Sony a faulty version of their processors and didn't end up fixing them until the slim came out.
My PS3 could die any day now, and the last time I used it (which was in late June) I had to use it right outside my window so that cold air could breathe in the console and not overheat it. Before I even modded it, the fans would run SUPER high and I knew exactly what was wrong but didn't want to touch it.
What bugs me more is that I could've bought a PS3 Slim and saved myself the worry of ever having to delid the thing, but the one I was looking at buying was sold before I could purchase and the fat PS3 was the one that was still selling. I've put some love into the console - replacing the HDD with an SSD and by modding it to have webMAN installed so that I could change the fan speed, but none of that is enough to be able to actually use the console comfortably.
It sucks because it's been collecting dust, and whenever I sleep the only thing I do with it is put it on my chair because it usually lives on my bed. (my room is fairly small, and I dont want to put it on a table as theres a turntable on the only table with enough space for the PS3 to sit on it.) It's essentially a really heavy weight and it really hurts me to leave it like this.
I could sell it if I wanted to but I don't want to end up selling a working PS3 to somebody, only for it to stop working after some use. It was never even cleaned or modified at all when I got it as it still had the warranty sticker and original screws.
If I ever find a good deal on a PS3 Slim, I'll definitely buy it and keep the fat PS3 as a little collectable, maybe sell it off later in the future and take the SSD from it and put it in the slim and add the firmware that the fat did on it.
Hey there, I know this was a while ago but I want to let you know I really appreciate the comment. CZcams never showed it to me for some reason. The fat consoles can really be a pain to work with in that regard... it's too bad because they are such cool systems and the games are awesome. I know there are some folks that provide delidding services and such for them if you wanted to go that route? The Slim is awesome to use regularly though since it's so much more reliable. If you're not worried about playing games from disc (already ripped your collection or can do it on a different system) then units with bad optical drives can usually be had for a little cheaper as well.
PS4 Pro - Jailbroken with GoldHEN. I use it to play PS2 games too since many are compatible.
PS Vita - CFW and SD2Vita with a 128GB SD card. I installed Adrenaline too to run PS1/PSP games since compatibility is near 100%.
Xbox 360 - RGH, 1TB HDD upgrade.
Xbox - Softmod, 2TB HDD upgrade and a custom HDMI cable with component signal for progressive scan support.

In 10 years, it will no longer be possible to play games with a modified console. the more we progress, the more years video game companies will be able to save, in 10 years all of this would no longer be possible.
Just watched this vid on an iPad whilst waiting for a game to download on my CFW'd N3DSXL after ordering a N2DSXL that I'm going to CFW as well, and got a SteamDeck to my side ready for me to play Mango Pack (Modded Minecraft Beta 1.7.3).

I’ve modden my 3ds and Wii U and plan to mod my ps3 soon but I’ve been having so much fun with emulators but one thing I’ve noticed is the the home brew community on the 360 seems very far back compared to other modding communities
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately yeah the 360 scene seems a little behind. It might have to do with the fact that 360s are just harder to get into compared to other systems where you'd only need a softmod. I'd still definitely like to explore it sometime though :)

I modded my Wii, My Wii U and my 2ds xl, But when I got my steam deck i could honestly do alot more
Switch modding does great and PS5 modding is starting to be a thing now. Honestly, considering how cheap Wii u are and the vwii mode, old Wii us a bit of a waste of time if you can get Wii u for more less the same price and it can all the same plus way lot more. There is just one thing that Wii can do and not a single other console can, it can output 240p RGB, any other console that you can run emulators on only supports 480i... Thanks to that you can play all the old roms on European CRT TVs in a great quality

I think it's pretty clear that the violence joke was made with the intention of directing it towards homebrew. Not as a serious comment about domestic abuse and the serious nature of such an issue.
I dunno, everyone has their own tastes and limits. So it's understandable.
And ofc, anytime I find a creator I don't vibe with or think is controversial, then I just don't watch their content.
I'm all for homebrew, but I disagree with your "I'm ENTITLED to run unauthorized software because it's MY system" attitude. No, you're not. When you buy the system, you do so knowing full well it's a closed ecosystem.
Thank you for the feedback! Though, I beg to differ - that entitlement is the driving force behind the existence of homebrew in the first place. Being content with a manufacturer's lock on the hardware (while absolutely reasonable from the perspective of most users, because a customer most likely understands it's designed to be a closed ecosystem, as you mentioned) isn't something that will spur researchers to take on the challenge. George Hotz, the gentleman in the interview I briefly included in the video who was the first to develop exploits to execute unsigned code on the PS3's firmware, holds the same opinion.
To make an analogy - being forced to use only Nintendo Software on Nintendo Hardware is like being forced to use Ford petrol in your Ford car and only drive on Ford roads.
See how absurd it is as a breach of personal freedoms when you purchased the hardware (First Sale Doctrine, mofos) to be limited in how you use something you own and control the use of?
That’s like saying you can’t modify a car because that’s not what the company said you can technically do with it- even if what you’re modifying is totally legal.
