      Scotty has to admit there's a little more than just male ego and showing off...There's also a lot of fun factor involved IMO. I used to go somewhere where there wasn't anyone around and do them while I'm alone, so there wasn't anybody around to try to impress. It was for the excitement, that little thrill you get inside when you're doing a good burnout, or doing it to blow off steam when you're pissed about something.
      However, I do agree that most burnouts are done to impress somebody by males and it is most definitely stupid.

      They call it "exhibition of speed" here.
      I agree that most burnouts are showing off for the male ego, and are very stupid, but there is just something about it that gets my heart pumping...when I did burnouts it was usually when I was alone and out away from people, so I don't know if that counts as far as male ego thing. I just always found burnouts exciting, or a way to blow off steam when I was upset, but not something I did often after I got older. Ya gotta admit it Scotty...doing burnouts makes you smile, even when you're alone with nobody to show off to, even for us older guys.
      I pretty much quit doing them a few years back due to the price of tires and everything else, plus traction control took the fun out of it too. It was always tradition in my circle of friends to do a bunch of burnouts the week or two before getting new tires and I always adhered to the tradition. But the last time I did that, I had a Chevy S10 with a 4.3L V6 and I could power-brake it (I know it's really stupid and is really hard on the rear brakes, but I planned to replace them soon too) and smoke the tires as long as I wanted. I did quite a few good tire smoking burnouts over the last couple of weeks before tire day, and then when I went to the tire store, I found out it was $200 each (Toyo...great tires and I wanted another set) to replace them! As the guy told me this, I had flashbacks of those tire shredding burnouts and I cringed to myself, lol.

    actually when you do burnouts on a standard transmission, it doesn't wear the clutch out. You're meant to rev the engine up and dump the clutch. People who suffer burnt clutches make the mistake of slipping it. When the clutch is popped out it stops slipping almost immediately thus there is little friction. Also remember that wear is a product of friction + heat so in this situation the clutch plates would still be cool when you do it, thus almost no wear on the clutch.

    Another issue (more with FWD models) is often only 1 wheel spins. This puts major stress on the spider gears in the differential. I've seen them explode separating the transmission case due to heat build up associated with the high speed they're spinning due to only one wheel spinning

    • @landen7900
      @landen7900 Před rokem +1

      My rwd only spins 1 wheel. But what if it’s not even close to redline? Redline is like 5k, it can burnout at 3k, and I never do it for even more than 5 seconds, just a lil spin

    I try to keep a "to each their own" attitude. If you enjoy the burn outs, more power to you. I've got a 2016 Mustang GT. It's got the line lock feature that will lock the front brakes so I can do a burn out. I've never used it, primarily because I can't afford to replace the tires!

    Scotty? I enjoy your videos and a lot of times you are on point. Recently I’ve noticed a lot of hate on the compression fitting deal. Personally I would steer away from it as it is proper to just replace the line instead, I know you have a lot of experience however that does not take away the fact a repair like that can fail! Seen it to many times where I hear ‘done it for x amount of years’ and then it fails. Not hating just observation. Second I do think even though the experience you have is amazing I do would like to press on your heart that in some cases I think you are ‘out of touch’ on new vehicles etc. I work at a ford dealer and have seen ‘old timers’ go down as they refused to accept the fact that they sometimes are out of touch when it comes to some new technology. Cheers! But keep up the videos I do enjoy them

    Doing a burnout in an automatic transmission is especially hard on it. Winding the engine will holding the brakes (or not if you got line locks) makes the torque converter spin really fast building up A LOT of pressure and heat. Two things that will lead to premature wear on parts like the clutches and bands. Most people don't have line locks and just floor the petal until the engine overcomes the rear brakes. A lot harder when your rear brakes are calipers. Front wheel drive I'd assume is the same if not harder to overcome the brakes as most passenger vehicles don't really have enough engine torque to do this. You would just burn up your clutch or burn out the bands and clutches in your auto trans.

  • @Slider68
    @Slider68 Před 6 lety +2

    Hey Scotty, I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the rear brakes when doing a stationary burnout (brake stand) with a rear wheel drive. I've spoken to too many people who think their rear brakes automatically turn off when doing these (their argument goes: rear wheels are turning -> rear brakes must be off...).
