I formed my first band in the late 80's, and have always fancied myself a solid player and a decent "box formula" soloist. This vid is the missing link, MANY light bulb moments. You're the best, Sped! thanks you for doing what you do... And thanks for the gear rundown.
Jon Strongarm Ah Jon, that’s amazing to hear! So glad you had a light bulb moment; they’re the best! 💡 You’re super welcome! Have fun. 🖤👌🏻
You are a true inspiration to me Sped. I'm grateful to you.
Tonight there’s gonna be a jailbreak. ‘Cause I’m breakin’ out of my rut. Thanks to your awesomeness, of course.
Old Dog Haha, hell yeah there is! Jailbreak every night in my house. 🤘🏻😎 You’re welcome.
Love the last line Sped - good lesson thanks :)
Peter Hughes Haha, had to finish it off with a chuckle! 🤣🔥 You’re welcome.
Some excellent ideas presented here! I saved this one to my "Lessons" folder. Thank you!
Dope licks bro! #2 is mind twister! I love it!
Thanks! This might be a sleeper lesson but it's easily as big as the Target Notes lesson! The combination of the two, I think goes a long way in learning the fretboard and shapes across it.
HAHA love the drama of the intro. Excellent Vid and very inspiring but it's still not going to stop me buying gear.:)
Colm Regan Haha thanks man! NOTHING will stop you buying gear. 🤣🤣
@@SpedSpedding revisiting this after 4 years and still buying gear
Another gem here... So many lessons so little time! 🤙
Total awesome, thanks for the licks with humor!
You're welcome Scot! Glad you liked this vid. I had loads of fun making it!
Subbed. Keep doing what you're doing 👍
Really useful lesson Sped thank you
You’re welcome Lee, glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! BADASS! ,,, Great licks to master! Cheers!
Glad you like them!
Great licks. 👍
Wow, just wow at your lessons and talent. I started playing as a young teenager back in the 1980s, and from what I understand I have quite a good collection of guitars. Played in a rock band in the 90s back in college and it was a blast!.... and then life happened. They tell me my 1981 white Les Paul custom that has aged to yellow is worth much more than I paid. I'm not selling. I'm playing. Same for my 1980 something stratocaster. Thank you Sped. Loving my guitars again. I forgot how good I was at this. Nice to get a good mentor on youtube to bring me back up to speed! Or possibly even up to ....Sped. Ha! I'm working on it.
Very very useful licks and teaching very nice thank u very much ❤👌👍🙏
You’re welcome! 🔥
Damn bro why are you not popular you deserve so much more exposure and audience. Keep educating us love from india ❤️
Great lesson thanks
Pete stern You’re welcome Pete! 👌🏻
THANK YOU!!! Still gunna buy an LP Classic though, of course on lowest payment plan courtesy of AMS lol.. I know all the patterns but this is a great way of visiting each one and visualizing them. And you teach bigly good for me understand .
Been playing since I was 15 and am still learning in my fifties. Re-visiting the Dorian mode at the minute. One again, at the risk of repeating myself, your playing is superb, your videos increasingly innovative, informative and entertaining and yes, you inspire me to play better! Damn it Sped you're making us think and play like guitarists should you revolutionary you!! 🤘🎸
Ah, the journey of it all. That must be incredible. Thanks so much for the compliment, hugely appreciate the feedback on this. So glad you find them informative and entertaining. Onwards and upwards! 🙏🏻🔥
This video was brilliant even before the music started 😀
Haha, thanks Lee! Glad you enjoyed it. 😎🔥👌🏻
Sped my friend, I am glad to have found this video, as the smooth triplet like pattern up the fretboard is GREAT and you bet your arse I am copping that one !! It was a little weak at first for me but once I got stuck in proper is was like greased lightning ! As always Cheers mate and thank you. Now look what you made me do!! The Fretbboard Police are knocking at my door!!!!
Hahaha, fretboard police! Without rewatching this myself I think someone came to the door in this video right? 😂 Another one of my EXCELLENT jokes.
I changed my way of thinking at 1:50,thanks a lot for sharing
🤘🏻 Yes! You're welcome.
Awsome lesson rock on
Same to you Matt!
Be as awesome as me.... Nice touch to a great and soon to be a legendary video of sped-licks....
Haha, thanks so much Monty! Thought I'd finish it with a bit of a joke.
Thanks Sped! 🤙🤙
Pleasure as always.
This is what the DR ordered to break some of my old ruts I fall back in to I played for years. Man I learned these licks and spread them all into my playing and keys. After playing 45 years professionally at any age new shit to learn is always a welcome fun chore. Thanks Dr!
So glad that after 45 years I still managed to sneak something new into your lick arsenal. How are they sounding? 🔥
@@SpedSpedding Youll be me in 20 years youll stil be looking for new ways
@@SpedSpedding they sound good man
Rock on. Your skills are enough!
Thankssss bro! Big love. 🖤🔥
Awesome
Great video thank you sped
Time Traveler You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. How’s your weekend? 🔥
@@SpedSpedding many thanks sped! this weekend a little stressful, we hope that in the coming days they will be better.
Time Traveler Yeah, everyone is going through the motions. I have been up and down. A good routine in the working week is key. Otherwise you go mad. 🙏🏻 Here’s to you having a better week! 🍺🍺
You are awesome mate
I know mate. 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@SpedSpedding Hey sport, what are your top 10 Aussie riffs? Theres a curly one for you!
Thanks for this Sped, most inspiring! I have lost some 15+ years of guitar playing due to an RSI injury and started playing again 2 years ago, my ‘mojo’ is coming back! .....🎶 .... “Movin’ down the Queen’s highway lookin’ like a streak of lightening!....” 😎 PS love the Zep tutorials!
Chris Stevens Ah Chris, such a shame! I have suffered with it in both wrists. It’s horrible. Glad that you’re back on it though. More Zeppelin on the way for sure. 🙏🏻🔥
Sped Spedding .....Ditto, both wrists. Did you have a method for reducing or fixing the RSI or was it just time? I still have problems.
I was at a night club when AC/DC came on. I ran down the stairs and jumped onto the dance floor that was covered in beer. Both my feet shot out in front of me, I landed on my arse with both arms locked straight to break my fall and the shock went straight up both arms. Now the internet is properly here I can adopt a much better learning approach. Cheers for your efforts!
PS I bought myself some new ‘kit’ for the PC: Reaper DAW and EZ Drummer 2 (oh the drums!) + you could give everyone out there a heads up on ‘Transcribe’, (what a brilliant tool for learning solos and practicing things slowed down). You could also get an affiliate kick back off providing the links (definitely from Transcribe).
Chris Stevens Ahhhhh what?! That’s crazy. I just read this out to Gab as well. Insane. I could feel the pain in my own arms. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll definitely check it out. I could use some more links in my video descriptions! 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome lesson. Keep them coming.
I was watching this in bed... having a rest...and suddenly i heard my doorbell..so i got up to answer it...noone there...so back to bed...rewound to the bit id just missed...and theres the doorbell again...so i get back up..open the door...noone there. By now my dog Raife is barking...so ...get back to bed..then rewind back to the bit my doorbell rang..and finally , the penny has dropped! 😳Its YOUR doorbell! Sounds exactly the same as mine! Im glad its just Raife and me here because i feel like an idiot! 😂
Love listening, Sped, even though I'm a pianist, not a guitarist! Cheers, man! \|/
Marc Devero Thanks Marc! Glad you liked it, how long you been playing 🎹 for?
i took lessons and theory while studying at Cal State Northridge 25 years ago; loved piano ever since! \|/
Marc Devero It’s with you for life isn’t it. 🙏🏻
Nice (condesc) ending there! Too funny. How did you come up with your CZcams name? Any reference to Chris Spedding?
It’s my name!
Yeaaaaah - love filming this with you! 👏🏼 awesome job. 💓 🎥
Gabriella Tavini Me too! Had to step my game up with you hot on my heels now. 🤣🖤 xx
Brilliant tutorial.
Any chance of doing a Rory Gallagher lesson, nobody seems to touch it
Excellent lesson, thank you! I'm a little confused as all I have learned is the pentatonic scale. I understood the first lick, as it looked like you started in what I would call box 5, then continued through 1-4. I think I understood the 2nd lick too. The natural minor has 2 notes removed so you get the pentatonic minor? So are you supposed to move between the pentatonic minor and natural minor (in the same box) or do you generally move between the pentatonic minor and major pentatonic? I guess I'm wondering why as beginners we learn the pentatonic box and not start with the natural minor boxes and just learn to remove the 2 notes. Hope that make sense?
Hey Brian! Thanks for your comment. Yeah, I start the first lick in box 5 and make my way through 1-4.
The Natural Minor lick has two extra notes in it; major 2nd and Minor 6th, or you could say that the Pentatonic Minor has 2 less. And you're right, not every single shape in the second lick was all Natural Minor, some of them were just Pentatonic again.
If we were improvising within the same box in C Minor or any minor key, I wouldn't mix the Major Pentatonic in there. The Major 3rd 6th and 7th would clash and sound out. I would use the Natrual Minor shape though, it overlays the same box shape (if that makes sense) as you probably know.
I think as beginners it's important to start small/manageable; something like the Pentatonic Scale is easy to remember and sounds cool. It's boxy, as we say. Also, with the added semitones in the Natural Minor there is more room for questionable resolutions when improvising, and semitone clashes if that makes sense?
@@SpedSpedding Thank you so much for the reply and clarification!!! Truly appreciated! I understand moving the boxes around on the fretboard, but I really think I need to just sit down and learn the notes on the fretboard and it all will make more sense. Appreciate the tip on overlaying the natural minor on the minor shape! Makes sense. I get confused when I've see people going between major and minor, using the same box (with the 3 fret rule) or overlaying box 2 over box 1 (for example). You rock dude, thank you!!! \w/
Brian Mckenzie You’re so welcome Brian. Shout if you need any more advice and I’ll do my best. 🔥
Great vid again, I'm sure your sick of this question - any relation to Chris Spedding?
Hey Stuart! Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
I love all questions; I’m not a direct relation. I did email him years ago when I was learning, just to say another Spedding was on the same path, he emailed back! What a legend. #Motorbikin’
How difficult the second exercise😅😅😅, you should put the tabs directly in the video, however very interesting 😁😁😁
The tabs are on my patreon.
@@SpedSpedding Yes I had seen that the printouts are on your paid site 😉😉😉😉 However compliments for the lessons are extravagant😁😁😁😁
Damn man, it's the fretboard popo 👮♂️

OMG... I wet my freakin pants when The Fret Police arrived! I must disagree with one thing... I need more Les Pauls, Strats and Teles... amps too... I NEED more stuff!! Including, more of these Sped... keep them coming... PLEASE!
🤣🤣🤣 they locked me up for weeks!! 🚨
What Key is your door bell in?
Not sure. Time signature is 4/Door though.
What do you mean? We don't need more gear? That does not compute!😮
What studio monitors are you running there
Yamaha HS7’s 🙌🏻
my friend love your channel hey if you get a chance check out some of my guitar work thanks - i played stairway ! (acoustic piano and guitar LOL) NO STAIRWAY
Its so sad that all these licks & geometric pattern lessons have lead our new generation music into a "Machine Music" Age. And in this surge of speed show off's, music itself lost its Melody 😥
