KROL is absolutely correct. there is no delay, that's all amazing control with picking and muting that mimics a delay but it's just all natural.

Tim did a making of for this song. And he said he writes the guitar parts with a few different instruments for this one then programmed the bass and drums and sent them to the clays and they had to learn how to adapt them into playable parts
In your spare time listen to tim's playthrough and maybe even skip to the part you "thought" was a delay effect ;)

there absolutely is still a delay or reverb, altho it doesn't take away from what he's playing, there is pretty clear decay in the studio version by my ear c:

@@uuabbit they delay seems to be there, but its so short that it sounds like a quick echo, but its not a delay that is repeating notes making it seem like you are playing more if that makes sense. I might be totally wrong but thats what it sounds like.
@@andrebaptista8284 sure but an echo/delay really is just repeating notes, again not to take away from what is actually being played, but i do notice delayed notes in that section. in fact after going back & listening again, i noticed you can hear the tail-end of the delay when the full band stops for the electronic outro bit
The intro was his album 4 teaser which was released 2 years ago. So a lot of us were so excited when we herd the full song finally release. But saying that a lot of people had already tabbed out the intro and after a few days of the full song release we have full covers. The fan base is crazy.
well they got 2 years to guess what tim will create and they had 2 years of anticipation and prep for the full song. But its a lot easier now to collaborate with people around the world now with social media and chat apps like discord or forum websites like reddit.
What's wild is that the chord progression from the start of the bossa nova part to the outro stays consistent. You can even whistle the melody over Tim's arpeggios at the end and it fits. By arpeggiating the chords it helps further reinforce the melody as notes from the melodic line are present in the arpeggiated chord line and match with the timing of the melody. It reminds the listener that there's really a melody there, and helps untrained listeners recognize this fact. Even if it's not present in total, there's enough that you hear the whole thing anyway, possibly without even realizing it.

The guitars they used in the song haven't been made by Ibanez in a long time. They discontinued them in 2000, but part of me thinks Tim made them want to bring it back lol! One of my favorite songs by them is Nightmare, incredible tapping and all around solid song. Keep up the good work mate!

I think you are right about the melody. I think that's because they almost take a drummer's approach to their songwriting. If you have the beat you can bridge it with amazing "fills", as a drummer might. It keeps everything very cohesive and keeping that melody simple opens up all the spaces in between for amazing riffage.
All done on Ableton all done using DI concerted to midi then adds vsts (his own NeuralDSP signature plugin) and then translated to a live show. Tim goes through "his" process and explains it on various videos here on youtube its no big secret, a genius at work not only as an artist buit as a sound engineer, DAW software programmer he has it all
I had not put it together before your video, but you absolutely nailed what I heard but didn't "know" if that makes any sense. The "reasonably" simple melody joined by incredibly intricate connections. I am a lapsed musician, but that is exactly what keeps bringing me back to this song. And made me a huge fan.
Yeah I noticed it in the moment! I’m sure it’s not a constant in the compositions but it certainly is a device that Tim seems to use.

I don't play an instrument, but I do play rhythm games at a reasonably high level. Your point about light touch also applies to rhythm games. When you are using a heavy touch, you tend to tense both muscles (flexors and extensors) rather than 1 at a time. When that happens, it makes fast and accurate movements so much harder. It feels counterintuitive at first, but it makes an incredible amount of difference.

I think Tim has mentioned that the solid pop chords and separation into parts/verses is to give the guitars a voice since they don't use vocals normally.

7:11 I appreciate you bringing this up. Tim has said before that because they don't have a vocalist the guitars/instrumentation need to fill that role and this point articulates that albeit in different language.
It’s a great way to maintain interest from a casual listener while still incorporating that depth via complexity and virtuosity.

Great video as usual man! For some older polyphia you could check out Aviator, Champagne, James Franco, or Euphoria. They started really adding the hip hop/trap influence in their EP "The Most Hated". There's videos for Goose and 40oz from that EP. The Worst is a great song off of there as well, but the CZcams video is a visualizer so not sure how that'd go for a video for you.

I recommend people check out Clay Gober's youtube channel. I'm not a musician so it was harder for me to tell the level of his musicianship when he's not shredding like Scott or Tim but there's some straight forwardly insane playing on Gober's channel. And then from there I could see his insane playing within polyphia's songs easier.

The most beautiful instrument I ever had the pleasure of playing was a luthier built custom classical guitar that was commissioned by my guitar teacher (when I was about 18). That thing rang like a bell.

I refuted this the other day while watching the unplugged version, it wasn’t until I was editing that video that I had a really hard listen and you are right. It’s all hybrid picking, and what I was hearing was a mixture of that and a little reverb mixing with some synths in the background! And the variation in dynamics between the main notes and the subsequent finger picked notes. I added a comment to the new video (out soon) 🤣

There is something to be said for speculation. This is a reaction channel meaning I have no predetermined context. Secondly why is everyone so afraid of fx? It’s well established that Tim doesn’t even use real amp sounds. His amp models have fx built in. (Which is absolutely fine). I am still not 100% convinced that there isn’t delay in the studio version. It’s complicated because most people forget that Scott is also playing.
Although I’m certain that there isn’t delay in the play through version.
Does absolutely nothing for me. Obviously have talent but a lot of their songs have this exact same feel and it makes me feel nothing.

Yep. It hits you cognitively, and for some enough to get a bit excited over the creativity and technical excellence, and yet it does not move me emotionally. Compare this, say to Dirty Loops’ work, maybe “Coffee Break is Over”…technical excellent and creativity, but with undeniable emotional engagement as well. Excellence, but also “fun.”
People feel differently. For me the absolutely most hard-hitting aspect is the FEELING. Everything else is just a bonus.
