I've watched the entire HnK TV series through 2 or 3 times and it never gets old. They did a great job mixing numerous direct rips from other cultures and making it somehow so much their own. Probably the #1 fault of the series in terms of story is the ability of Hokuto Shinken to save the moment like trilithium or some form of cosmic radiation always saves the day in Star Trek. But, obviously, that's not a plot device unique to HnK. Overall though, I freakin' love this series, and it has one of the most badass English titles ever.

After having read the manga for the third time this year, i've been meaning to do something along the lines of making either a series of essays or overly analytical posts about the franchise. I see I may have been beaten to the punch. This is an amazing set of retrospectives.
There's a surprising amount of depth in the Fist of the North Star series. And to be perfectly honest, I think the tale it tells is as relevant as ever.

Without the awe inspiring story of Fist of the North star...Shown Jump wouldn't be the same....Dragon Ball could be vastly different...there wouldn't be a lot of Tough manga characters.... HELLthere wouldn't be any Jostar clan...or DIO for that matter!

What the hell is going on with Raoh's skin colour? When he's a kid it's light, as a teen it's definetly brown, and as an adult it fluctuates from light brown to really dark. Is it radiation that mutated his skin when the nuclear war started?

very well done retrospective!! i'll say this. the concept of Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) is cool. But the original series does NOT translate well for American audiences. It was meant for a japanese audience. I feel the 1986 compilation re-telling movie version is the better cooler version of the story. the tv series plays like a Rated R dragonball Z that at times is convoluted and unitentionally funny/goofy due to its absurdity. for example the convulted story of Ken and his brothers, In the Ken / Shin rematch episode. Yuria is watching the battle and Shin seemingly murders her - then Ken realizes that its a not Yuria but a Mannqeuinn ?? Again. goofy & weird. Then Shin reveals that Yuria had died after commiting suicide. Then near the end of the series Yuria is revealed to be alive as a martal arts master king?? its just a weird series. In the film version she plays the damsel in distress that men fight over. simple. I feel the best versions of Hokuto No Ken story are (The 1986 animated film) and live action version from the '90s starring Gary Daniels and the recent PS4 role playing fighting game known as 'Lost Paradise' - the original series is just too weird but i respect it as the original. but i tried to watch the original series just as a fan. and guess what i laughed and then i feel asleep from boredom. good video though. thanks for doing this.

I recently read the new Manga and am now just watching the original anime and videogame clips. I really enjoy this story about revenge, redemption and brotherhood. I grew up watching anime but never saw this one on TV nor bootleg. It has some nuances of street fighter, which is spooky. It also reminds me of Akira in that Ken and his creators are warring with each other. Bottomline ive seen alot of animes and this one js epic, timeless and classic. One Piece creators definitely stole some of the character stylings from it. Peace and love. ✌️♥ 💥👊💨

@27:19 That scene with the non-violent villager is also more a commentary on the morality of Pacifism. Pacifism can only work if both opposing forces are committed to the ideal of pacifism. The immorality is in choosing non-violence in the face face of violence, and it’s inability to protect others from violent threats. Thus pacifism costs more lives than it saves. Pacifism is a willingness to sacrifice the life of the individual or group in the pursuit of upholding an ideal rather than actually doing the right thing and protect other and preventing injury or death.
