      as an English speaker only, I can kind of understand it's spoken, but written down, it's impossible for a native English speaker monolingual

      You can learn Bislama and Tok Pisin so you could call yourself bilingual. They are extremely close and are very mutually intelligible.

    listening to the was I in a cult podcast and they mentioned the native language. seeing it written down, I would never be able to read it but you can kind of hear some English in there. really interesting stuff!
