- Not 2 months ago Mark Stone was once again put on LTIR. This time for a lacerated spleen and it came just 2 weeks before the trade deadline.. what fortune! As this allowed Vegas to go out and acquire Thomas Hertl as well as Noah Hanifin. After securing a Playoff berth, today their Dallas Stars vs Vegas Golden Knights series was set to begin and like clock work, Mark Stone came off of LTIR. Even better, William Carrier was also activated from IR. Truly, a miracle! In the last 3 years, Stone has been activated off of LTIR just days before the playoffs all 3 years. So with him getting back on the ice for the first time in 26 games, it went exactly to script. Hanifin, Stone and Hertl combine for a 4 point night. This, after just 26 seconds into the game, the Stars took a penalty. They Knights went to work and guess who? It was Mark Stone on his very first shift with the opening goal of the series! You seriously can’t make it up. The Stars fought from behind the rest of game in what was overall a fun one. I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

Stars fan here. I just want to say thanks for covering the Stars because it feels like we get overlooked a lot of the time. You're one of my favorite hockey content creators anyway, and I get extra stoked when I see some Stars content coming from you. Im flying to Dallas tomorrow specifically to see game 2, and I am optimistic it's going to be a good bounceback game for the boys.
If Game 1 went on even 2 or 3 more minutes, it would have ended differently. Stars are one of, if not the most resilient team in the league. If Vegas drew a nightmare team to face, it was Dallas. I'm not a "Stars fan" in traditional sense, but I know the team very well from running up against them over the past 2 decades.
I continually follow them as secondary interest in this league, and ya, if there's a team that can turn VGK on its head and pile drive them, it's Dallas.
Have a rockin time at G2, bud. 🍻
@@datriaxsondor590 Thanks! It'll be my first time seeing a game in Dallas and my first playoff game, so I'm super excited. My family is so sick of me talking about it.
Resilient? They rolled over in Game 2. Pete Debor is just not a great coach, he's wasting the talent on that team.

The Dallas GDT on Reddit is half Mark Stone insults like "Mark Stone drives 45 in the left lane"
Once, ok. Two times... could happen. Three? In sports there is such a thing as sportmanship and fair play. Abusing a loophole for a rule that was intended to help should be frowned upon.
His injury in 22 cost them the playoffs and DeBoer his job. 23 Cup. 24 unknown. There is NO loophole it is in the RULES and CBA. Hawks used it. Bolts used it. Vegas used it. Those are the three to win the Cup w the rule I believe. Others have used it as well. Toronto, Tampa, Colorado, and Vegas are all CURRENTLY OVER THE CAP IN THIS YEARS PLAYOFF Vegas isnt even the HIGHEST. WHO CARES!!! Tampa will probably add Sergachev at some point this playoff and the Avs could potentially add Landeskog. Toronto as well could add Murray back on and they used him all year as LTIR when he wasnt going to get surgery on his hips but Toronto wasnt going to play him. This is so old. All of next year Toronto will add LTIR contracts to build a roster as they have over 50% of their cap dedicated to just 4 fowards!!!! Let that sink in!!!

Two of those teams listed are also recent cup winners with the other being well...the Maple Leafs. Do not forget about the two teams in the playoffs with higher cap totals than Vegas. Toronto at $97,645,821 and Tampa Bay at $93,776,877. Vegas at $92,239,581. Colorado at $90,957,006. Vegas is not the only team using LTIR.
Difference with the Leafs is that none of those injured players magically returned for game 1 and they didn’t have those guys conveniently put on LTIR in time to make big deadline acquisitions.
@pato655 No need to defend what VGK is doing. What they are doing is 100% within the rules. All these crying fans that say it's cheating is just jelly of VGKs success. Our GM is by far the best (although ruthless) in the league. I wouldn't want to have it any other way.
The difference is none of those players are playing. Tampa has $16.15m of LTIR from inactive players & the leafs have $14.4 & colorado has $9m. Vegas uses LTIR to go over the cap, then activates them on game 1. There's a huge difference
@@WingsOfAnemia Are they doing anything against the rules? NOPE! Questionable timing? Yeah maybe, but they are not breaking a single rule.

Look, I'm not disputing that Mark Stone is injured. I just think it's insane that he'd be ready just about exactly for the playoffs after being on LTIR three years in a row. There's no way that Vegas hasn't sneaked something in there, whether that's keeping him off the ice a little longer than necessary for cap reasons, or sending him out before he's fully healed. Neither of those is acceptable. They're allowed to use LTIR the same as everyone else, and they should have to scramble for it sometimes, just like everyone else.

Next year Stone will be out in Feb with a sprained pinky on LTIR and magically reappear again in the round 1 of the playoffs. What a joke the league isn't doing anything with it.
Because it's mostly American teams doing it. I think toronto is bad for it this year but the league doesn't have to worry about them winning the cup anyways. I'm pretty sure if montreal or edmonton did it the rules would change
I get that it's all legal. But it's super unsportsmanlike to use IR to stack your roster like that. I don't know if it's because of the ownership or the fact that they aren't a very old team, but they don't seem to have the same respect for other teams that the rest of the league does
It is all legal, and it is very unsportsmanlike, but sportsmanship doesn't show up on the cup. Only the names of the winners.
If you want to blame anyone for this, blame the league and everyone involved in negotiating the CBA. They are the ones that continually turn a blind eye to this loophole. Or, maybe it's intentional. Who really knows?

The NHL needs to do something about this loophole... such bullshit
It's not a "loophole" when it's written in the rules, it's something that any/every other team can and should do if it's written in the rules. Imagine coaching a baseball game and having a "secret weapon" in the form of a relief pitcher, but instead of using your secret weapon, you just keep average Joe in the game and chance losing because you didn't want to use your secret weapon... How dumb can you be? That would be a dumb move to NOT utilize every advantage and resource you have to win if your goal each game/season was to win, you would have to be a moron to skip over something like that. Let me guess, when you get tired of using this as an excuse why VGK beat your team, you will probably go back to saying "the refs cheated". I hope it happens again next year too.
This is just..... depressing. It's so sad to see Vegas 'fans' be so okay with this manipulation. It's sad to see the league 'buying' cups for teams that circumvent the cap. What starts out as fun and exciting 82 games of good, hard, old school hockey, quickly turns into whoever wants to write the biggest check.
For the Stars specifically, this was their year for an HONEST run at the Cup. For Pavs. For Faksa. For Dadonov. For Tanev. For DeBoer. For Benn. Whether you like them or not, you know that they earned their spot this postseason. And just to watch it get ripped away from them like Vegas stealing candy from a baby is so sad to see what the NHL has become.
The lifelong fans tease and wonder why new fans don't stick around. I hope this helps everyone understand the why within that revolving door.
#FixTheCap
damn, you really spend all day around youtube just parroting the same things don't you lmao.
What's the point of a cap system if a team can just BS their way around it?
Well, let me spleen it to ya. A cap system puts a financial cap on the amount/salary your team has. You can't go over the cap. All teams have these caps so they aren't getting crazy money differences and stacking teams with too much talent, it wouldn't be fair to have all the money and talent in one team, they would have a huge advantage year after year and likely become a dynasty because of all the games they would win. If a team cheats and goes over the cap, they will be punished, there are rules for going over and/or cheating. However, in the NHL there are rules that some refer to as a "loophole" but they are actual rules that allow the cap to be opened up if someone is on LTIR (long term injured reserve) meaning they can't play at the moment but are still on the team. That money isn't reflected in the cap if your team is going into the playoffs, so it opens up more space (cap space) for teams to use up on bringing in other players come playoff time. This isn't limited to any one team, it's a rule that applies to all NHL teams, they attempted to change it but the teams voted on keeping it in place, so it's in place as of today. I know it was a long expleenation but it needed to be said.
As a Stars fan I'm not going to whine about Stone going out for the two months necessary for spleen removal recovery. Bro got destroyed in preseason and it never settled down.
Dallas had plenty of chances to put Seguin on LTIR the last couple months with his chronic leg situation and pick up a guy since Hakanpää's been hurt all year.
And they dont do it. Im not going to hate on Vegas just because they do what my team won't.
that being said with the way they're beating on Harley, I wouldn't mind if Ryan Suter channels his Uncle Gary around the net like he did last year in the first round.
I guess honesty only takes them so far...
It’s Bettman’s team. What do you expect
You do know that Bettman works for the owners not the other way around right so by insinuating that it's Bettman team and he would let them do anything as long as it allows them to win the Stanley means that majority or all wants vegas to win the Stanley cup instead of their team you know how crazy that sounds right

You cant do it if your players don't go on LTIR. Shit out of luck if your team remains healthy
@@borrow4654 If your team were true champions, they will overcome and find a way to win no matter how many other players get added to the opposing team. Real champions don't make excuses, they make plays, they find ways to win regardless of the situation. Mark Stone only plays in the playoffs. Makes him a little less useful as a player but if you have a spare 20 or 30 mil...
Need a version of the Reijo Routsalainen rule re: LTIR?
For those too young to remember: Routsalainen was considered one of the best Finnish D-men, ever. The guy used to play in Europe (on loan) all year and then arrive with a playoff team just before the games started. He got his name on the Cup twice while playing fewer than 50 reg season games, total, over two years for Edmonton, I think it was.
The specific rule stated that if a player had played outside of North America for the majority of the season, and the team which had loaned him to a team in another league brought him back, other teams had a chance to lure him away (as if he were on waivers). The Rangers snagged him that way one year for a playoff run, IIRC.
Yes, that was all pre-Cap and pre-LTIR. And that rule is still in the CBA.
Another aspect: it seems sort of ridiculous to me that teams who often cry poverty can simply avoid having a player's salary count against the cap simply by claiming he's injured (what is the criteria for reporting such and is it subject to review by the League?) , only to bring him back AGAINST the cap for the playoffs, and to be OVER the Cap during that time, as well, without incurring some form of penalty (like a luxury tax).
I love the Vegas hate. You're not real winners unless you have haters in sports every great franchise/player has been called a cheater at some point even the great one. Its the attention you get for being better than others.
Don't be jealous. They are using existing rules, any team can do the same and do. Being mad because the same rules your team didn't utilize are utilized successfully reeks of jealousy and envy. It is like being mad because someone else takes advantage of a tax law and you didn't....that's on you. If the rules allow for it don't cry.

The rule needs to be fixed. Is it cheating? No but only on a technicality. It should be salary of players in the game.
