  • "You're entitled to shit."
Carmela and Tony go out to dinner, where Carmela "ambushes" Tony by telling him that she is filing for divorce. Tony calls Carmela out about how she walks around in her fuckin' mansion, in her $500 shoes and her diamond rings, and acts like butta' wouldn't melt in her mouth.
    Then, she's ready to order!

TO ALL VIEWERS: THANK YOU FOR 100K VIEWS! I honestly NEVER thought it would even GET CLOSE to the level of Borko and SopranosFan57, so thank you all. I know I have been remiss in posting clips from the show as of late (new job), but I will do my best to toss some more new ones up soon (I did just put a Chris clip up fairly recently).
The main thing is I don't like re-posting clips that have already been posted once, twice, a hundred times, etc. because, well, they're already out there and you can go watch them, so why would I bother reposting those clips? So, I try to find scenes that I feel are either important, powerful, moving, or even funny, that have not already been put up.
Thank you all for watching the greatest, and my favorite, show of all time with me. I appreciate all of you who have watched this and any other videos I've uploaded (be they good or crap). Much love to the world.

@@MyfavoritecutiesI disagree with this. I don't feel Tony every OWNED UP to anything.
He ADMITTED what he did, but owning up would be making it right. Owning up would be making Davey Scatino right, or returning money he stole from helpless victims.
They're BOTH hypocrites, but the biggest difference is Tony is a violent sociopath who commits murders and violent crimes to make a profit.
Carmela just married someone for money. Yes, she knew WHO she was marrying, but there IS a distinction between the two in that Carmela doesn't actually murder anyone.
And let's not get this twisted: I am NOT calling her a saint by any means. As the psych told her "The one thing you can't say is you haven't been told."
So she is a willing participant to some extent, but not to the extent where she commits violent crimes and murders. She's just married to a guy that does and pretends by going to church and ironing his clothes she has nothing to do with it.
SHE DOES! SHE IS A HYPOCRITE! Why does she go to all that church stuff and donate to the church and do all that crap? Because she has had a guilty conscience about it for years and has to do SOMETHING to assuage the guilt.
Tony, however, feels almost NO GUILT. He is a sociopath more likely than not. There IS a distinction.
They're BOTH hypocrites, but Tony is a sociopathic murderer in addition.
Carmela is someone who turns a blind eye in order to benefit, but she doesn't pull any triggers herself. Furthermore, however, is that it is shown that *Carmela does feel SOME guilt.* The extent of it is debatable, and it's obviously not ENOUGH guilty to do with the shrink told her ("...take the kids and leave...it's blood money") but she feels some MODICUM of guilt, which makes her distinct from Tony who feels none.
Again: NOT ABSOLVING HER. She is a terrible person in her own right. There IS a distinction though.
Sorry for the long comment: I LOVE THE SOPRANOS and I relish ANY OPPORTUNITY to engage with fellow fans. So I try and watch EVERY COMMENT on my videos and, if not respond, at least read them.

      @mcnamaraky  Před 2 lety +12

First, thanks for your comment and view! I hope you read my comment here I'm leaving in reply to yours!
She DOES actually admit it. When she goes to see the shrink (the one who calls out all the hypocrisy and evil that goes along with Tony), she does so because she's thinking of all of this and does feel guilty for it
However, her guilt ends up being outweighed by her love of the life of luxury: instead of listening to the shrink who is COMPLETELY HONEST AND BLUNT about who, and what, funds her lifestyle and who Tony is, she keeps searching for someone who will validate her staying with Tony. This way, she can claim: OTHER PEOPLE THINK ITS OK (and a PRIEST TO BOOT!), SO IT MUST MEAN IT IS OK!
She was fishing for someone to stamp her relationship with a murderous mob boss as OK, and once she found one, she listened to him.
We can see she ends up OK with this arrangement, as she almost never brings these feelings of guilt up again.
So yeah! She definitely admitted it, but once she found someone willing to OK it, she goes along with that path and pushes all of that guilt out of her mind.
Thanks for your comment and view! I appreciate all of you viewers and commentators!

Throughout the entire series Carmela lives the luxurious housewife life getting expensive gifts, anything she wants, want to cheat on tony with multiple men but never getting the chance to, spending whatever money she wants (like forcing tony to make a $50k dono to meadow’s college) and she walks around like she is a holy saint who only does what is right. And on top of that the fact she draws tony to the restaurant to tell him she is already lawyered up, and is coming for AJ and half of the assets tells you her motives its all about money for her. And thats the whole reason she stays with Tony. Money. So the fact that Tony calls her out on her hypo-critic bs right to her face is so perfect

I would say Melfi is one, Carmela is the other. I actually think Melfi more so because Carmela sometimes does lash back out and yell, whereas Mefli has not once yelled or denigrated Tony.
I have another video about a session Tony has with Mefli where she just COMPLETELY backs him down over his accusations about Gloria, and HE is the one to break eye contact, back away, apologize, and pick up what he knocked over.
The look Melfi gives Tony in this scene almost says "I do everything I can to help my patients: what did YOU do to help? And what do YOU do to help others?"
Check it out if you're interested, it's on my channel I have 2 Melfi clips (again because I couldn't find them) that I added. I truly think the one is the only example in the entire series where TONY is forced to back down by someone. Every other situation he's the boss and he gets his way. But when he makes those accusations about Melfi: she's not his subordinate, she's not his flunkie. She looks him right in the eyes and throws it back.
THANKS FOR WATCHING EITHER WAY! I DO TRY AND READ ALL COMMENTS EVEN IF I DON'T ALWAYS RESPOND!

@@dongiano We are not alone good sir (or madam).
You know what's interesting too, is that I recently went back to school about 2 years ago to finish a degree? So I was in class with people about 5-10 years younger than me (I'm right around 30, so the people younger than me were around 20-25; there were people my age and older too, but that doesn't pertain to this story), and one of my good friends I made while I was there? He's in that age range, about 5-8 years younger than me; I believe he JUST HAD his 21/22 birthday when we first met, so he's around 23-ish now?
Anyway, he was giving me a ride home way day so I didn' thave to take the bus, and he actually asked me "Yo man, have you ever heard of a show called The Sopranos? It's really good man I just started watching it on HBO. I had to tell him that I was a Sopranos SUPERFAN (who actually WORKED with the guy who played Jason Gervasi, the guy who is indirectly responsible for Tony's empire crumbling when he is arrested for pushing X and therefore Carlo rats to cop a deal) and that I knew almost every episode by heart.
Anyway, the point of this is that when HBO and the news publish those stories about *The Sopranos* being watched by a younger generation? As far as I could tell it was NOT BULLSHIT! Here's this guy 5-10 years younger than I am getting into this show thats 20 years old now, and he loves it just as much as a new fan would have back when it came out. I thought that was interesting as FUCK, that young people RELALY ARE getting into the show and watching it at a large rate.
The reason for this in my opinion is that the show is essentialy timeless. Sure, they don't have smart phones in the show or anything like that, but you could make that SAME SHOW TODAY, leaving out any smart phone references, and it would STILL HOLD UP!
Sorry, a bit off topic, I just thought you might find it interesting: that there REALLY ARE YOUNGER PEOPLE GETTING INTO THIS SHOW just as much as us long term fans have been.
I cannot tell you how big of a smile it put on my face when he asked me if I'd "ever heard of The Sopranos..." and I had to respond that I was a fucking ultra fan who even uploads clips of great scenes to youtube.
Fantastic that the younger generations ARE GETTING INTO THE SHOW! Probably one reason they were able to use to make *The Many Saints of Newark* which is why it's such a fucking shame that the movie sucked so bad.
*Anyway, thanks for watching!* I only upload clips that are NOT ALREADY UPLOADED (no sense in uploading stuff that Bork or TheSopranosFan57 have uploaded; I only want to put up stuff that DOES NOT APPEAR on CZcams somewhere.
I am actually working on a super-cut upload that is only the guys saying "OH!" Similar to the super cut someone uploaded called "The Sopranos but just gabagool." I had already thought about making something like that, and the idea for the supercut just consisting of "OH!" you know, like all those scenes where they exclaim "OH!" and I thought it would be HILARIOUS to make another cut that contains just OH, similar to how the Gabagool super-cut video came out very well.
The only problem is: there's 6 seasons with about 10+ episdoes per season, so I have to re-watch about 60+ hours worth of *The Sopranos.* Not that 'm complaining about that aspect: as YOU SAID, sometimes I just leave it running in the background just while I'm doing other stuff? But the problem with it is that I actually need to PAY ATTENTION to it, create a doc that contains all of the timestamps of each "OH!" pertaining to each episode, and then record all of those clips and then combine them all together. I'm not a video editor or someone who does work with video: this is just stuff I do for fun (I do IT work). So, I'm not some fancy-pants video editor who can do the work very easily: I'm probably doing it the most difficult way possible via the CZcams video creator tools (lol), but, that's what I'm working on and want to get done one of these days.
You heard it here first: "Sopranos, but just "OH!"" So, when I eventually upload that (probably in a year lol), just give it a look!
      "OH!"
Anyway, again, *THANKS FOR WATCHING!* and keep your eyes peeled for my "OH!" Supercut one day!

@@LongHaulTrucker4Life First of all, just FYI, I made a LONG POST IN RESPONSE TO YOURS, and it got deleted. I'm very upset, so I'm going to do my best to make it again, but shorten it a bit. Sorry, I write essays about this show (on various different websites) and I was MOTIVATED by what you said to write one here. If you read it, I hope you enjoy it! If you don't read it because it's too long, I understand that too. But I am going to talk about hypocrisy as it stands in relation to *The Sopranos* and although Carmela IS a hypocrite, her hypocrisy PALES IN COMPARISON to that of the others. I hope you enjoy!
So, for sure, Carmela is a hypocrite, there is no denying this. The only NON-HYPOCRITES are the TRUE INNOCENTS IN THIS SHOW: the normal, everyday people who just so happen to end up in the Mafia's path, and get caught up, like victims of a hurricane or a tornado. They're just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Example 1- Sal Vitro. Sal is just a normal working guy, trying to make a living with his landscapping business, when suddenly, one day out of the blue, a fucking pile of rocks lands on him in the form of Feech La Manna. Feech is a fucking piece of shit predator (just like EVERYONE I N THE MAFIA IN THIS SHOW) who has NO QUALMS about viciously assaulting a normal working guy in order to make money. Granted, *Sal probably wasn't aware that he was interrupting one of his "impermeable stories" so you know, its mainly Sal's fault for not realizing that! * In reality though, Sal did nothing wrong, and he is COMPLETELY PUNISHED FOR IT. Paulie, ANOTHER VICIOUS SHARK (just like Tony) PREDATOR, ALSO SEES A CHANCE TO PROFIT OFF OF THIS: he will "talk to some people" and "take care of it" for Sal, in exchange for a "couple of points." In the end, what does Paulie do for Sal? Almost nothing. He gets him HALF of his old neighborhood, but must now pay points, AND do HUGE LAWNS, which he could NORMALLY CHARGE TONS OF MONEY FOR, in exchange for what. ABSOLUTELY. NOTHING. In fact, I would be willing to be that if someone were to sit down and DO THE MATH on the work SAL NOW HAS TO DO FOR FREE? It would *OUTWEIGH THE MONEY HE GAINED BACK FROM GETTING BACK HALF HIS NEIGHBORHOOD* and if anyone disagrees with them on this, I think you're fooling yourself. Paulie is not a good man, he is not nice and he is out for one person: numero uno.
Example 2 - The Carjacking Victim Family:
This family is ruthlessly carjacked by two black men. "SIC' EM CHURCHILL, SIC' EM!" Churchill, of course, smartly hauls ass out of there, possibly to never be seen again. Now, Barry, the male head of the family, upon being carjacked, exclaims "FUCKING NI***RS! WELL WHO ELSE HUH?" Barry has also been duped by the Mafia: THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRIME, THEY ARE THE REASON IT IS BEING COMMITTED! The Mafia are aware, as a result of the end of the cold war, that there is a huge power/money vacuum in Eastern Europe to be filled by rich oligarchs seeking western comforts, but who cannot find them were they live as they are not in stock. The solution? STEAL THE CARS and sell them to those Eastern European oligarchs.
In addition, the Mafia CREATES RACISM through the commission of this crime. Sure, the black guys are the one's PHYSICALLY STEALING the car, but without the demand and say of Tony's organization, that car would have never been jacked. It is COMPLETELY PLAUSIBLE that Barry had never made a racist comment in his life before he had his car stolen, AT GUNPOINT, which is a traumatic event for ANYONE, *LET ALONE SOMEONE IN THE CAR WITH THEIR WIFE AND YOUNG CHILDREN* ! He might have made this comment in a moment of anger, and have really meant it. BUT, it is EQUALLY POSSIBLE that he has now suddenly become a racist: Tony's actions have created racism, have bred more hatred, and have created the VERY THING TONY HIMSELF CRITICIZES: BLACK. CRIME. SPECIFICALLY, BLACK ON WHITE CRIME (which, is an ENTIRE DIFFERNET DISCUSSION, but *I WILL SAY AS AN ABSOLUTE FACT THAT YOU ARE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO BE THE VICTIM OF A CRIME PERPETRATED BY SOMEONE OF THE SAME RACE AS YOU THAN YOU ARE BY SOMEONE OF A DIFFERENT RAE! And the reason for this is OBVIOUS: most white people are around more white people than black people, just like most black people are around more black people than white people; just like most Asian people are around more Asian people, and on and on and on etc. You are MUCH MORE LIKELY to be robbed by a white person if you, yourself, are white, and as Meadow says, which is ALSO TRUE: CRIME IS AN ECONOMIC ISSUE NOT A RACIAL ONE* )
Anyway, without going into that any further, what does Tony say to Meadow when her bike is stolen? "YOU STICK TO YOUR OWN KIND!" How thoughtful of Tony! I mean he clearly knew that her bike was stolen by some unidentified black males, and was just looking out for his daughter! Except oh wait, it was possible that a Mafioso in New York was having someone stealing expensive bikes, in order to resell to an upper class yuppie crowd! Tony is JUST AS WILLING TO EXTORT AND ROB THOSE HE GREW UP WITH AND HAS THE SAME SKIN COLOR AS (i.e. DAVE SCATINO) as he is people of ANOTHER SKIN COLOR. In fact, *I struggle to even THINK OF A MOMENT IN THE SHOW WHERE TONY ROBS AND EXTORTS SOMEONE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR THAN HE IS* !!!! The only time I can even think of him committing a crime, PERSONALLY, against someone who isn't EXACTLY like him, is when he assaults the Russia that hit Janice, but even that guy LOOKS white, not black, Hispanic, Asian, or anything else, but white!
Tony has family members killed, he has children of close friends killed, he kills young people who attacked those close to him, he kills old white people, middle aged white people, he kills LOTS OF WHITE PEOPLE, but never any black people. And in fact Tony USES A LOT OFO MINORITIES TO HELP PERPETUATE HIS CRIMINAL ENTERPRISES!
These are just SOME EXAMPLES that I can think of JUST OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. There are more than likely MORE, but here are just the one's I know of IMMEDIATELY without any more thought:
Season 1: he uses the Reverend and the strikers to create a situation where he can extort more money from a construction company
Season 2: The carjacking by the unidentified black males!
Season 4: With Ralphie and Zellman, he uses the black head of a non-profit to commit federal fraud with HUD. Additionally, he uses black men to attempt the assassination's on Carmine Lupertazzi, and when it is called off, he has them murdered by other members of the mafia.
Season 6: His organization sells stolen credit card information to middle easterners, who may, or may not, be involved in terror financing. Later on, he exploits this for his OWN PERSONAL GAIN, by reporting them to the FBI in exchange for a future assurance that it would help him quite a lot if he were ever convicted of a crime. So, in this instance, Tony and Tony's organization NOT ONLY CREATE THE CRIME ITSELF, BUT THEN TURN AROUND AND USE THE CRIME TO THEIR OWN LEGAL ADVANTAGE! What a play by Tony, truly and honestly: he steals from those he knows, those he is friends with even (Artie), those who are the "SAME KIND" as he is (for example, stealing from Italians at Italianissimo in this scam), and then later on, USES THE VERY CRIME HE PERPETRATED FOR HIS OWN LEGAL BENEFIT. This is some ballsy, smart ass play by Tony here, and I have to salute him for that.
"YOU STICK WITH YOUR OWN KIND!" Yeah Tony, ok. If by stick with your own kind you mean commit crimes against those who are of the same background as you and have the same skin color as you, then yes, you DO stick with your own kind. But if by that you mean you stick together to help each other out? Tony couldn't mean that any less even if he were to literally laugh at someone saying it to him and spit in their face. He means it SO LITTLE that he has Jackie Jr killed, despite him being someone he LET DATE HIS OWN DAUGHTER, so, HIS OWN KIND* who "comes from good stock," compared to Jamal Ginsberg, the Hasidic Homeboy, whose only crime is hitting then quitting on Meadow, who is a smoking hot super intelligent woman who any guy would be LUCKY to tuck in at night!
So, is Carmela a hypocrite? Abso-fucking-lutely. But pretty much EVERYONE In this show is. The only one's who ARE NOT HYPOCRITES are the TRUE INNOCENTS who stay clear of the crime. Those are also the one's who tend to SUFFER as a result of the crime, but hey, if it makes Tony a buck, he's down with it. Artie is the ONLY BORDERLINE one: he is an innocent, but he DABBLES in not being one. He's just not suited for it. As Tony says of AJ "What, in my business? He'd never make it>' and t he same is true of Artie.
Again, the ONLY NON HYPOCRITES: are the innocents. Carmela is no innocent, so she is DEFINITELY A HYPOCRITE. Even Meadow begins to BECOME A HYPOCRITE: She's up on her "high horse about justice" despite living in a house COMPLETLEY FINANCED BY CRIME and despite wanting to practice law and protect the disenfranchised, ignores all of the EXTREME CRIME AND VIOLENCE that is associated with her father and even her upbringing (let's not forget that, on a trip to visit colleges WITH his daughter, Tony STRANGLES A MAN TO DEATH).
Anyway, I've gotten QUITE OFF TOPIC HERE, but I was just VERY MOTIVATED to point out how the ONLY HYPOCRITES ARE THE INNOCENTS, and that *Tony is the BIGGEST HYPOCRITE IN THE ENTIRE SHOW* who corrupts all around him. He is a poison, a disease, a cancer, who infects those who get close to them, and then uses them up and spits them out once he's done extracting every last ounce of good from them.

I think Janice and Livia both did to an extent, just not as much. Both of them were just as pissed off about goomahs as Carmela is: we see Livia and her stance on them in some flashbacks (in particular the one where Tony's father is with Fran when his mother miscarries), and we hear Janice talk about it as well regarding Richie, in addition to pursuing Bobby, the only made guy who never had a goomah. She also murders Richie for hitting her, which is something that is SOMEWHAT ACCEPTED in mob circles; as Richie himself points out, if you wanna put your hands on a woman, first you gotta marry them, and after that, your hands can come out of your pockets. She clearly aired her grievance there...with a gun and a bullet to his chest.
She's definitely worse than both of them are though, considering the extremes she goes to and the stuff she says which makes her a huge hypocrite.
The others didn't like certain aspects to be sure, but they complained way less and got way less about the mov life than Carmela did, who complained more than either of them yet also got more than either of them too. I just wanted to point out though that those two definitely had their hangups and grievances as well.

    • @mcnamaraky
      @mcnamaraky  Před 2 lety +5

@@captainprice2671 I don't agree with this. Tony had been wanting to "mulch his roses" with Christopher for a long time. Ever since he started branching out and moving away from the business. Tony had invested time in him as the "hair apparent" and Christopher proved he wasn't "worthy." Sure, the Cleaver thing UPSET him, but it was wayyyyy more than that. That was just a tiny bit of frosting on a gigantic fucking cake that they'd been baking for years, which got put into fucking overdrive when Chris sided with Tony over Adrianna.
"I haven't been able to tell anyone this, but I'm fucking relieved. He was a tremendous drag on my emotions, on my *thoughts about the future.* *To begin with, every morning I wake up thinking: is today the day that one of my best friends dimes me to the FBI? And a weak, fucking sniveling, lying drug addict? That's the worst kind of bet. The biggest blunder of my career is now gone. And I don't have to be confronted by that fact no more.*
*And as a relative, a friend, someone you can count on?* " [ *flips fingers under chin* ]
Notice how he doesn't bring up Christopher's feelings, or his movie, or what Chris thought of him personally. All he references is how susceptible he is legally to the feds, and how a drug addict is NOT the person he wants being his mouth piece. He put a huge bet on Christopher, and lost, but he was able to HEDGE his bet by killing him.
Christopher really did go to hell for his uncle Tony. In fact, Tony SENT HIM THERE. So he was the "guy I'm going to hell for," because he was the guy he went to hell BECAUSE OF.
But yeah, I don't think the Cleaver thing played as big a part in it as you think. He was already having big problems with Christopher without noticing the things in Cleaver. He never brings it up in any of these sessions where he talks to Melfi (real, or dream). Chris was just a drug addict involved in organized crime, which already makes him MUCH MORE SUSCEPTIBLE to being squeezed by the feds.
I mean, after all, how many times did Chris rant to Adrianna about diming Tony out to the FBI? Or to JT? "Gravano's living big on the government tit. I like it out there, I'd be closer to Hollywood anyway." And that's just what we SEE IN THE SHOW: I'm sure he made the same rant DOZENS OF TIMES, whenever he got angry at Tony. Did he mean it? MAYBE NOT. But then again, we never saw Chris arrested to face SERIOUS TIME. At the same time though: same with Tony. "Tony's never really been to the can, not really. Here's a guy who stepped over his own uncle for the boss seat: his fatha's brudda. Meanwhile, I did 20 fuckin years shining shoes and making grilled cheese off the rad-eee-aye-tour." Crazy Rhasta fuck.
"The worst part, truthfully, is I gotta sit there with people who are hurting: bad. And I gotta have the long face and the sighing and the platitudes. But I don't feel it.
*Then THAT makes me feel like a hypocrite...*
*And that makes me mad at them.* "

In my opinion still the greatest show of all time. There's a few others up there on the podium (Breaking Bad, The Wire, Twin Peaks if you are into that, some argue The X Files as well although I've never really watched it) but this still takes the gold IMO.
Bryan Cranston said in an interview once: "Without Tony Sopranos, there would be no Walter White."
Also, as Imperioli stated in his Rogan appearance, it added a cinematic quality to television. You yourself mentioned the directing and writing and it was much more cinematic than procedural shows or sitcoms before it. It also was one of the first long story format shows; plots would take place over entire seasons, sometimes multiple seasons (e.g. Adrianna being an FBI informant was seasons 4 and 5). After The Sopranos, shows realized that they could be 80 hour movies and not just a bunch of random episodes or sitcoms.

As bad as Tony was, Carmela was greedy vile twat in her own right
lets not forget at the end of the season Carmela literally gives tony the offer of asking for 600,000$ for some no property in order to keep there marriage in tact.
Not dignifying Tony's Cheating or anything else, but Carmela could be just as low at times. If not worse. Thats pure Evil.

    • @mcnamaraky
      @mcnamaraky  Před 2 lety +8

As annoying and bitchy and greedy as Carmela could be, I wouldn't call that pure evil by any stretch. Pure evil to me is when characters in this show murder people over literally jack shit. Like when Chris threw a rock into the back of a waiters head because he didn't tip him jack shit,, and then him and Paulie then ROBBED THEIR MONEY BACK AFTERWARDS. To me that's way more evil than asking for 600k to stay married. I mean, after all, there are russian mail order brides and there are people who agree to get married in general because of the financial incentives and legal bonuses provided by the government. I don't think asking for 600k to save amarriage is evil by any stretch.
Compare that to tony SUFFOCATING HIS OWN NEWPHEW. Instead of repairing the relationship he has with his nephew, a guy he claims to love, he takes the easy way out and chokes him to death after a car accident, and then goes and fucks his Las Vegas girlfriend (as if killing him wasn't enough). THAT'S EVIL in my book.
Carmela is just a greedy bitch, but there's plenty of those on the planet. Again, there are mail-order brides in real life, and few, if any, think they're evil, or the guys ordering them are evil. If you've seen some of those TV shows based on it too, there's one in particular I remember where the woman basically says that she wouldn't have married the guy if she knew he didn't have money. The guy basically lied to her about how rich he was to convince her to marry him, and then was surprised when she became pissed and acted like a complete bitch towards him because he didn't have enough money. In her defense, she was completely up front about what she expected from the get-go. Does it make her a shit person? Absolutely. But at least she was honest about it.
Does this make Caarmela a shit person as well? For sure, and she's less up front about it: she PRETENDS like she only wants "a little gold heart on a chain," lol, when in reality she does want all of the material shit. But does that make her evil? Not to me. Just a shitty person
Again, there are tons of examples of being evil in this show, and they most involve murder. Another good example of PURE EVIL is Mefli's rapist. Pure evil. But Carmela? Just a materialistic bitchy person. Evil I think is way too strong a word for her. Just a greedy person who hides her greed behind a veneer of "good church deeds." She's no Harvey Weinstein, or a kinslayer like Tony Soprano (who murders multiple relatives, e.g. his cousin, his nephew, etc.)

Tony would be doing what he does regardless of whether or not he had a family to support. How much money can a single man in his position spend? He lives the high life as well with his tailor made suits, gourmet dining, fancy watches, gambling and sleeping around, etc. Carmela pulls her weight running the house, raising the children, cooking like crazy and organizing family gatherings, etc. Of course she is going to look and live the part. It all requires a massive amount of upkeep. Tony's infidelity and lack of transparency is a constant torment. They are all pampered, spoiled and seeped in denial and rationalizations. Tony is able to do what he does because Carmela provides the foundation of family and home life, giving him stability and an air of normalcy and respectability. He's not the only one who puts in the effort, but because he brings in the cash, he gets to throw all his self righteous indignation in her face. Now he expects her to clip coupons? He just doesn't want to lose face. He can't bear the thought of her with another man despite his inability to keep it in his pants. Tony is every bit the hypocrite that Carmela is. Why are you acting like he just didn't want her with another man when it's clear that he also can't stand her hypocrisy which is partially why he's so venomous. I'd feel pretty pissed if someone who instead of cutting you out of their life would rather mooch off of you monthly as well as claiming assets to an actual mini mansion that they paid nothing for. I'd feel annoyed if someone who never gave a shit that you murder people, rob, lie and fraud others and would happily reap the benefits of your bad deeds but act high and mighty still even though they too have 0 morals.

First off: THANKS FOR WATCHING MY VIDEO AND COMMENTING! I try to reply to almost every comment on here, because I LOVE *The Sopranos,* and I LOVE talking about it, and this video gives me a great way to engage with fellow fans concerning certain points that are up for debate.
ANYWAY: sorry that this is a long post, but it's one I've made to SEVERAL OTHER COMMENTORS HERE (which is why it's as long as it is: I've copy/pasted from those and added and removed some more sections, so it's both grown larger and shrunk). *The main point of this post is that TONY NEEDS CARMELA, and Carmela DOES IN FACT PROVIDE AND DO A LOT FOR TONY AND HIS HOME LIFE (like, ALMOST everything!).* PLEASE READ IT IF YOU HAVE THE TIME, but, if not, just, first: 1) try to read the BOTTOM PORTION I HAVE HERE WITH THE QUOTE FROM MELFI, and 2) *I believe Carmela is entitled to SOMETHING, even if it's not half,* and the question is exactly: *JUST HOW MUCH IS SHE ENTITLED TO?*
IN HER DEFENSE (and I'm not stretching my neck too far out for her by any means of the imagination) it's not like she didn't do anything. She: *raised the kids, she took care of the house and made sure it was what it was, she took care of all the little shit that Tony couldn't be bothered to, she also attended meetings and such that helped make their family look more respectable and presentable (e.g. donating time and money to the church for the fundraisers, attending school and social events to raise their profile in the community as a family that cared about school and the students, and not just as some people who couldn't give a rat's ass about it, basically took care of ANYTHING social pertaining to their family, and ANYTHING pertaining to their children, etc.).
Carmela was the GLUE that kept that family together, 100%, and she was also the façade that made them seem presentable when they have NO REASON for people to find them presentable. It's no secret Tony is a mafia don, and obviously guilty of GREAT, NUMEROUS, CRIMES, which we've seen LOCALS discuss many times. Examples include: AJ's friend's father, the man who reports Tony out to the police for the Matthew Bevilaqua killing, who IMMEDIATELY RELENTS AND CALLS THE POLICE TO RETRACT HIS STATEMENTS, Julianna Skiffoozle's friend who talks about how she grew up in Jersey here whole life and knows at least a litttttleee bit about how horrible these people are, (I believe she even points out that they're murderers, etc.) etc.
SO: it's not like she did NOTHING during their marriage, because she did. And I PERSONALLY BELIEVE she is entitled to SOME of that money. But half? Probably not half. Maybe a quarter to a third. And that's not just because of laws concerning marriage and divorce and everything, I'm just basing it off of the work she did PERTAINING TO THEIR FAMILY.
Like, *without Carmela, their kids could have turned out like Eugene Pontecorvo's kids: heroin addicts who shoot up, alongside a younger daughter/sister that who the fuck knows what's gonna happen to.*
Again, it's not like Carmela did NO WORK, but her work just didn't happen to involve earning the money through ILLEGAL MEANS. But she DID DO STUFF for both Tony AND their family, and, *as we saw when Tony did NOT HAVE CARMELA during Season 5: his life was a FUCKING DISASTER OF A MESS when he was on his own.* *Remember the house he was staying at on his own?* How absolutely fucking disgusting it was and how he didn't take care of ANY OF IT, and how he didn't participate in ANY of his kids schooling and events and such (despite saying he would). *He's like a big child who needs a "mother" to look after him, and no, CARMELA IS THE ONE WHO TAKES CARE OF HIM AND HIS HOME LIFE. While she is NOT HIS MOTHER, and is VERY DIFFERENT FROM HER, she still treats him as if he is a kid who needs parenting, in terms of what she does. I mean for fucks sake, she even WASHES HIS CLOTHES, which is something you'd EXPECT A GROWN MAN TO BE ABLE TO DO, but nope, he is completely unable to
Despite half of his goomah's being like his mother, as Melfi says, Tony made ONE GOOD CHOICE VIS-A-VIS women in his life: Carmela. And that is why TONY didn't want the divorce: Carmela did.
      To quote Melfi exactly:
*"Despite your mothering, you made one good decision in your life vis- a- vis women, you're not gonna throw that over. Your own selfishness is too strong to let that happen."*
      "Alright, alright."
*"Actually, in spite of everything, you're a very conventional man."*
Basically, she's saying that TONY KNOWS HOW MUCH CARMELA DOES FOR HIM, and BECAUSE OF THAT he is TOO SELFISH TO DIVORCE HER. He does NOT WANT TO LOSE WHAT SHE PROVIDES, which is why he sticks around and puts up with her "bullshit, bullshit, bullshit!" day in and day out. And, in spite of HIM calling what she does "bullshit, bullshit, bullshit," *Tony is clearly MUCH BETTER OFF WITH CARMELA THAN WITHOUT HER.* Tony knows that Carmela does a LOT for him, and for his family, and, as a result of that, he is TOO SELFISH to give up on their relationship and marriage. Hence why he tries (to an EXTENT AT LEAST) HIDE HIS INFIDELITIES AND when she is CONFRONTED WITH THEM FACE ON, tries his best to calm her down and reconcile right there and then: because he does NOT want his home life interrupted, or to have to go out on his own, or any of the dozens of other things that end up happening when they are separated.
So, I BELIEVE CARMELA DESERVES SOMETHING FOR raising his kids, taking care of his home, etc. DOES SHE DESERVE HALF? Probably not. But she DOES deserve something.
Or, you can take Tony's stance in that she's "entitled to shit." I don't personally believe that BUT, I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE MIGHT FEEL THAT WAY, AND I THINK IT HAS SOME VALIDITY TO IT.

    • @mcnamaraky
      @mcnamaraky  Před 2 lety +4

It's sort of akin to saying something like: salesmen make all of the income for a company, so you shouldn't pay the janitors or the bookkeepers anything if they get laid off or fired, because without those salesmen, none of them would've made any money.
AGAIN: NOT SAYING CARMELA IS ENTITLED TO ALL OF IT OR EVEN HALF. Just entitled to SOMETHING. THE DEBATE IMO, should be about HOW MUCH SHE'S ENTITLED TO, not whether she's entitled AT ALL. She performed a service(s) that enabled Tony to go out and MAKE all that money. Without her, he has no ability to take care of his home life (again, as evidenced in the season where he is separated and we see how he lives on his own: it's straight-up DISGUSTING. He NEEDED Carmela to help manage his life and his affairs, and without her, he would've been a complete mess who would have possibly never succeeded as boss.
      Again, just my 2 cents.

1:57 - Actors can handle this a number of different ways. But really look at the subtle movements Gandolfini uses here. You see him actively battling his instinctual rage, resisting the urge to get the last word in, and eventually succumbing to the need for escalation. He nearly walks away, but he can't. He's furious about Carmela pointing out his hypocrisy, her greed, and the fact he may lose a ton of money in the divorce. And THEN he loses the veil of sarcasm seen earlier, and gives one hell of an imposing speech.
Acting perfection. Just one of the hundreds of thousands of EXTREMELY small details of Gandolfini's performance in the show. He and Falco will likely be undefeated as a duo. The magnum opus of casting.

I think they are both right here. Tony should not be cheating on her I don't care if he is in the mafia and everybody else is doing it😤. Carmela on the other hand did grow up with this crappy expectation and should not be this outraged. She chose this life.🙄 However I can't help feeling sorry for her🥺 and I want her to leave him and GO FIND FURIO😍! He is the only man that will make her happy. Now that the kids are practically grown she should just stay "married" to Tony and be with FURIO. I'm sure FURIO wouldn't mind the legality of it since tony has made it impossible for a lawyer to help her. I would like to think that after the last episode she does go find him. Wishful thinking

They made an agreement, so half his money is hers. Don't like it, don't sign the marriage document. Marriage is an institution that was created the way it is precisely for women like Carmela to be housewives and not have to worry about getting kicked out on their asses with nothing in their old age. The same men who bitch about alimony also bitch about childless career women and working mothers. You can't have it both ways!

@@otterlover3399 Amazing how every faux feminist who walks around demanding equality never marches for the equal right to pay alimony or register for selective service.
Don’t tell me how strong and independent they are, but then turn around and demand free money every month for simply existing.
That’s Tony’s point here. Carmella is a tier one hypocrite.

@@otterlover3399 This is true, and I agree 100%. *I hope you take the time to read this post, as I build on your point with some history and then a modern discussion of divorce TODAY at the end! So! Here's a small history lesson related to this topic: this is why things like *"dowries" and "bride prices"* exist (both back in the day AND, to an extent, today, in *some* parts of the world).
A dowry was given to a man by his wife's family so that she would bring "something" to the marriage: since the new husband was EXPECTED to COMPLETELY SUPPORT HER, she was bringing something: generally some sort of valuables or money, although for poorer people it was often symbolic. This was basically their way of paying the husband for the money he would need to spend on his new wife.
Conversely, some cultures had the opposite (or both): bride prices. This is exactly what it sounds, and was basically a way for a man to "buy" a woman. He'd pay her family for her (for a variety of reasons depending on the culture) and now she "belonged" to him. This was only a few steps above indentured servitude in my opinion (which isn't much above slavery), but it is how things were done.
Dowries, while making less sense, still did make SOME sense once you think about it. When I first learned what a dowry was I said to myself: that's weird, why wouldn't the GUY pay for the woman? Why would the woman's family pay the guy to take her? But then I realized that, back in the day (a few hundred years ago or more), because women did not work or earn any income, it was to offset the money that the man would be expected to spend on his wife to keep her in the life she was accustomed to. Basically, it was a type of insurance or long-term compensation for paying for her life.
So yeah, we had these kinds of things and *not that long ago either!!!* *In some parts of the world there are still dowries AND bride prices!*
So, it would appear, TO ME AT LEAST, that modern day divorce laws with "equitable distribution" of assets is, as you say, a guarantee that a women won't be tossed out on her ass at some point simply because someone younger and prettier comes along with nothing to show for it. I mean, imagine you are a completely faithful wife, you're a homemaker: you make a "beautiful home" like Carmela, you raise an Ivy League daughter who becomes a lawyer, and suddenly get tossed out on your ass by your SERIALLY UNFAITHFUL, CHEATING, PHILANDERING, HUSBAND! Does that sound fair that Carmela should end up with nothing in such a scenario? I say no, it's not, and that she deserves *something!*
*The REAL QUESTION is this: HOW MUCH IS TRULY FAIR?!*
Is HALF fair in the case of Carmela and Tony? PROBABLY NOT, but I'd say she's entitled to AT LEAST 1/4, maybe 1/3, and of ALL HIS ASSETS (legal and available AND illegal and hidden), not just the one's that are on paper. So yeah, I'd say 1/4-1/3 of Tony's TOTAL ASSETS would be fair to an extent.
What's everyone else think? How much IS FAIR for Carmela?! If you think ZERO is appropriate, I will respect that, but I would like to know YOUR REASONING for why she deserves 0, despite all she's done for Tony over a span of 21+ years?
