  • Renowned Egyptologist Dr. Bob Brier, aka “Mr. Mummy,” appeared at the Salmagundi Club in conjunction with the American Research Center in Egypt New York Chapter (ARCE/NY), on Jan 31, 2023, to explore the adventure and reality behind what he terms "Ancient Egypt's most impressive engineering accomplishment" - not the pyramids, but obelisks.
No one knows how Ancient Egyptians (nor, for that matter The Romans) moved these incredibly heavy, huge monolithic shafts of granite. In the 19th century additional massive ancient obelisks left Egypt for Paris, London, and New York. The story of the New York and London obelisks are well known, but not so for the Paris obelisk, the first of the three moved. This lecture tells the remarkable saga of Apollinaire Lebas, the young engineer who overcame serious obstacles (including a plague) and manifested his genius to bring Paris the obelisk.
This talk, co-sponsored by ARCE/NY and Salmagundi, is the second collaboration between these two institutions.
