Bret certainly wasn't the best talker in the business, but he did improve somewhat during his heel run with the whole Canada vs. USA conflict. He's also often been criticized for taking himself too seriously and being his own biggest fan, which is pretty true if you watch some of his interviews. Regardless, he always did have great body language in the ring, whether it was to convey his emotions (anger, fatigue, frustration, etc.), or it was selling. His match with Austin at Wrestlemania 13 was a fucking classic and I think is one of the greatest Wrestlemania matches of all time.
After Austin had passed out from the sharpshooter, you see Bret with his hands on his hips standing defiant and triumphant over his opponent, the volatile, confrontational bastard that had been verbally and physically attacking him for some time after his return to the WWF. This is the guy the people had been cheering. The American people condoned this kind of behavior when Bret saw himself as a hero and role model only to be stabbed in the back. Now it was time for Bret to let out some more pent up frustration by kicking him when he's down. Then his great heel refusal to challenge an intervening Shamrock was pretty sweet. In the end Bret further legitimized himself as one of the best in the business after his long hiatus by winning the match, yet Austin never actually tapped out. They both got over as a heel and face... though depending on where each event was held.

There is a tale to be told just in the fact that a Southern guy booked a finish for the 2nd generation Northern guy to beat the 2nd generation Canadian guy....

On a side note I got to say I still hate to this day the way Eric Bischoff wasted Bret Hart. The screwjob did change the course a professional wrestling Bret Hart heel turn in the year of 97 was the best his character ever been and the state of WCW capitalizing off of that they turn on baby face right away after the Man spent the whole year being anti-American and he still could have had him come in saying that he was still the truth WWF Champion because Shawn never beat him and he defeated Austin twice on major pay-per-views.

To play devil's advocate, one of the good things to come out of the demise of kayfabe was the opening up of a whole new avenue for retired wrestlers. People love to hear the old stories and now that the vets were no longer constrained by the pro wrestling version of omerta, they were able to write books, start podcasts and score lucrative speaking engagements by shooting rather than regurgitating the same old storylines and answering the same lame "is wrestling fake?" queries. Would Corny's podcasts and appearances be as lucrative if he had to stick to kayfabe?
As for the effects on modern-day wrestling, well, it's a case of adapt or perish just like any other form of entertainment. Be it vaudeville, burlesque, circuses, big-band music, roller derby, Frankie and Annette, whatever, they all had their day and now they are for the most part gone other than a few scattered nostalgia acts. It would be nice to go back to the days of territories and kayfabe, but there is no unringing that bell. It's not going to happen, best to move on.

But the years later up until now watching this video and finding out the real actual truth behind the Montreal Double-Cross from Jim Cornette's own words about what really went down involving Bret Hart. This is a really surprisingly unexpected shocker to me for real. And to also find out that Jim is really close friends with Bret "The Hitman" Hart and the Hart Family and that he didn't really want to have anything to do with the double cross finish, but he didn't really have any other choice at all by having to be pressured and backed into a corner by Vince McMahon. And being forced to come up with the idea of screw job finish. OMG Wow I had no idea that he was responsible for the idea and end result. But at the same time I really feel for him and gained more and a new found respect for Jim Cornette that he was man enough to admit that he fucked up and didn't really wanna go along with the idea though. And what we have in common is we hate Vince Russo's guts and the things that he said about him was hella 🔥 hilarious 😆.

And one more thing that I really needs to add regarding the whole scenario about the infamous Montreal "Double-Cross" situation. Despite still being in a state of shock about the fact of finish being Jim Cornette's own suggested idea, Was an absolute genius and on top of that really changed the whole entire wrestling game and the course of wrestling history forever. And which also recreated, rewritten and reshaped wrestling and how things are done now, involving finishes especially controversial ones. But nonetheless even though Jimbo suggested different and more simple less complicated controversial finishes to Vince McMahon, But Vince wouldn't even take those advice and suggestions and other alternatives, which really was fucked up. Knowing things could've and should've gone differently for real.
