It’s amazing how a song that’s so popular with the film, is something that Redford himself heavily disliked. Thanks for the interesting fact about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Dave, have a great day!
it was a good movie
I have mentioned that I didn’t like Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head in a post about singer B.J. Thomas at the time of his passing. I didn’t know that Robert Redford hated the song. But, like all things Hollywood, it was an ingredient for success.
An example. During the filming of Casablanca, composer Max Steiner didn’t like the song As Time Goes By. He had another song in mind. But Hal B. Wallis loved the song and it was to stay because snippets of As Time Goes By is heard throughout the film. And while actor Doolie Wilson, who played Sam the pianist, he never played the piano(he was a drummer)he sang the song and it became a hit. He was the only actor in the cast who had been to Casablanca.
Casablanca won an Oscar for Best Picture.
One of my favorite movies of all time! And I don’t care what anyone thinks of that song. I love it! And love BJ Thomas too! 1969 was a year full of memories. Some good and some not so good. Thanks for sharing Dave.
Sam Eliot was in the movie; He was shot by the Sundance kid early in the movie. However only his boots on the floor were seen. That is when Sam and Katherine Ross first met.
Wacky races is better but that is my opinion 🤯
Sam Elliot is the one gambling with Robert Redford in the very beginning. You do see his face and he has no mustache. His line is "I didn't know you were the Sundance Kid." and a couple more lines in there. He also ask "How good are you?" and Butch scrambles as the Kid shoots the Gamblers pistol across the floor. Sundance doesn't kill the anonymous Gambler, played by Elliott. Sam Elliott also met Katherine Ross on the filming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They got married and are still married to this day.
@pauljoyner4338 although Sam and Katherine are both in the movie. they did actually meet til 1978
He's right it seemed totally out of place.
I was born in easily ‘70 and I vividly remember singing this song often in my early single digit years. Literally some of my very first memories. In fact, it feels like it’s part of my DNA because even as I write this, I can not help but be compelled to “sing” the song inside my head. It wasn’t till we got cable and I saw Butch and Sundance in the mid/late 80s that I realized the song was from that movie.
Thanks Dave! You do a great job here! This is my favorite nostalgia channel!
Redford is a big man to admit that he was wrong.
You were right, the movie was a perfect storm of sorts because the script, actors and actresses, and music all came together.
Great movie
BJ Thomas had a hit with this particular song. Many High School and Junior High bands played this song at half-time at football games. Raindrops Keeps Falling On My Head was a very popular song but it went well with the movie. Paul Newman and Robert Redford were great for those parts in the movie.
Bacharach/David was the third most successful hit song writing team of the era behind Lennon & McCartney and Holland/Dozier/Holland.
Maybe Robert didn't really understand the message the song was conveying. It wasn't about the rain. It was about overcoming obstacles. Troubles and worries can be tremendous obstacles; then, he realizes that "it won't be long till happiness steps up to great me." I've only seen the movie once; but, the song plays in my head with some regularity. I would sing along with BJ Thomas without missing a single word, every time I heard the song on the radio.
You've only seen the movie once?!
This was interesting! Love the movie! What a perfectly cast movie! I can see where Redford would think that. We were all proven wrong! Thanks Dave ❣️😊
As crazy as it sounds, I really like the song:
“South American Getaway “. It just sounded really cool when I was a kid.
It still does.
📻🙂
This was one of the greatest movies of my childhood. I was only 4 years old when this came out, but I got to see it when I got a little older, and I was glued to the screen the whole time it was on.
I'll tell you, I agree with Bob! I saw this when it first came out and I've never liked that song! In '69 when The Cream, Hendrix, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and a list of other bands that were changing the music biz forever, they put a song like THAT in the soundtrack!? It's the old story of the "old school" studio heads going for the catchy jingly tune! Of course, now I'M one of those "old schoolers"!
I remember it well we had to sing raindrops in chorus..oh boy memories! Here's the funny thing I never actually seen the movie 🤣
Jst like you "never actually seen" a passing grade in English class. LOLOL
Do yourself a favor and see that film. It's great and still holds up well today.
You do a great and unselfish job giving credit to sources and inspiration. Class.
And candor works well for you. Your videos are like storytelling, not computer generated news blurb recitations.
"And Katherine Ross wasn't half bad, either."
Bacharach is so great, truly underrated. And that song South American Getaway, oh my.
You could do a whole thing on the film, though I understand that you smartly kept this short. Alas, short attention spans.
Redford and Hill talking Newman into being Butch, not Sundance. Thus the title change from "The Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy" as either way, Newman was understandably always going to be the showpiece, thus the character name coming first.
Theb McQueen leaving, refusing to have his name "beneath" Newman's!
Of course you could really go to town on the film. But TRY to keep it somewhat short!! (For best traction, that's all)
Yep. Folks seem to like the "bite-size" videos here on CZcams. Thanks for the comments, Bill!
@@jdsundstrom Thank you. BTW translate "Theb" as "And earlier," :)
For the longest time i thought that was John Denver’s song When i was a kid i was having dinner at the “fancier” restaurant in town. We were seated next to the lounge area and i could see thru the divider a John Denver looking guy singing this song while playing guitar sitting on a stool I don’t know if I actually really thought it was Denver but it sure did look like him with the hair and glasses to this 7 yr old 😂
Must confess... I always DID wonder what the Song had to do with the Movie.
This is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time. The acting, directing, and storyline was absolutely pitch perfect. Now Raindrops is a great song and I love BJ Thomas. However, the soundtrack was in the 2nd act is less appealing to me. I am actually ok in the transition music with the sepia tone photos of the three from Utah to NYC to the steamship. It actually works as sort of a period piece. However, when Butch and the Kid were robbing the banks in Bolivia, the music there - hmm not so good. Almost nails on a chalkboard. Whenever I watch the film, i lower the volume during those 5-6 minutes. Other than that, perfect film. The fight scene between Butch and Logan (Ted Cassidy “Lurch”) is comic delight
Great review 🤯
My favorite song and my favorite movie thanks for sharing 😊👍🏾
i used to love a movie called gun fight at the o.k. coral. some big stars were in it. earle hollomem from police women, the actor who played macoy on star trek, some other big names. this movie would be a good video topic.
I agree with Robert Redford. I H-A-T-E that song!
Well done
I saw it at the drive in.funny thing bj Thomas hated raindrops keep falling on my head to. I love the song. It always takes me back to a special time. Bj probably liked it better after it went number one for four weeks.
I agree with Robert Redford but I can't imagine the film without it of course raindrops keep falling on my head he's right there is no rain in the film
Cool movie and cool song. CZcams has cool uke lessons!
Although, IMHO, The Sting is a far better flick.
agreed
Saw an early Robert Redford on an episode of The Twilight Zone where he played a wounded cop who knocked on the door of an old lady who was afraid to let him in fearing he was death
A good enough movie should not be hurt too hard by inappropriate music. Matthew Broderick starred in two movies with that problem. I find the opening credits music for WarGames just plain annoying, and my mother objected to the rock score to Ladyhawke, a fantasy adventure set in medieval times. Some choices can be jarring, but it all comes down to one rule: if it works, don't knock it.
How interesting, thanks
I wish you would do videos on Norman Lear and Ryan O'Neal.
Thanks for the suggestions, Pryce.
@@jdsundstrom NP!
I love that song and the movie was amazing 🤩
Thanks 😀
You're welcome 😊
Loved the movie, liked the song But I couldn't understand why it was movie either? Just figured it was the 60's and someone had some chemical inspiration if you know what I mean
good day dave. i hope you are having a good weekend?
You too!
@@jdsundstrom I wanted to like this movie because I used to love the Banana Splits as a kid. I understood the genre of the movie was to be a bit dark because it's a horror movie but my god this movie is terrible. The acting is horrendous and it makes you wonder if these people actually auditioned for the parts or if they were just given to the first people the producer seen.
I stuck with it for the hour and a half duration, why I don't know because this could easily be the worst movie I've ever seen.
They would have been better making a movie about how the Banana splits began, a bit like a biography but instead they tried to make a horror movie and it failed miserably.
I've given it a generous 2 star rating and that's being kind and it's only because the Banana split characters look exactly how I remembered them and the theme song was in there.
Do not waste your time on this movie. Banana splits movie not like the 60s tv series 😢
I guessed it right LOL. That's crazy luck.
aka Jerry Gillespie. I don't know why Redford didn't like the song since It was number one in 1970. BJ Thomas performed the song on the Ed Sullivan Show and as a comic bit a cloud filled with water showered over BJ soaking him. He was a good sport about it though. This can be seen on the Best of Ed Sullivan on Decades TV which has a whole weekend of Sullivan and I'm sure this show will be in this.
I completely agree with redford. And Im a fan of B.J. Thomas.
Wonder if Robert Redford will team up with Clint Eastwood to do a movie??
He retired from acting
I liked RR best in Jerimiah Johnson. He and Will Gere were hilarious together.
Skin that pilgrim, and I'll get ya another. 🤣
Have you seen the Benny Hill & Jackie Wright version of Butch Rafferty and the Fundance Kid ?
I have not. Is it on CZcams?

I love that song, and I like the movie, but the two don't really go together. Kinda the opposite of peanut butter and chocolate.
Great movie
Totally agree!
I have to agree with Robert Redford, I never liked that song and still don't.
Yes, the song became a big hit. But I've always felt that it was completely out of place in the film. In my opinion it destroyed an otherwise delightful movie. Shows what I know...
Dont agree with Redford's opinion here anymore that I agree his politics. Great actor though.
Spoiler Alert later in my comment:
Yeah, it was a great song, but it had absolutely no busuness being in that film. I own a copy of the movie but it still bothers me a bit. Fortunately the scene with Ms Ross (a lifeling crush) and Mr Newman is so damn sweet and funny, I can get passed it.
As I recall, the hilarious scene where they use too much dynamite on the train car was actually (and surprisingly) based on reality.
I think it's about time I gave this another watch. Thanks Dave.
I didn’t watch that stuff I am not in to westerns at all
14th ....Heyy Dave...ahh man I was 9 when this came out......and dam they were both in their Prime in that Movie / very handsome.... :) The musical score - yep I knew it dave - that song can get to you if you hear it to much - I guess like any song
