This is my favorite movie of all time and my family just returned from a trip to Zion and the Grand Canyon. I watched it again when we got back, but your short put everything in perspective. The fade in/outs also provided a nice feeling of how temporary life can be and how much I miss Paul Newman. Thank you for this...very well done!

If I didn’t have to work this is what I’d do, all these film locations. But I couldn’t do as good a job as you have done with this. Sometimes we have to allow ourselves a bit of escapism, and it’s true some of these scenes near brought a tear to my eye. It was just a film, but depending on where you were and where you were at in life when you first saw it, the characters and scenarios get etched so deeply into your mind. Were there ever two cowboys more handsome and cool as this pair? Legends both of them. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to share this with us all.

Having worked 25 years at 20th Century-Fox as both a writer and studio historian, I truly congratulate you on a first-class presentation... my only criticism is that you didn't make it long and more comprehensive enough!
Whilst filming the jump scene by the river, you could've got some great shots of the Durango-Silverton train that was seen in the movie, that runs parallel to the river... that's an iconic ride in itself.
Good photography and software editing... expand it out and this should be included on the bonus features on the next DVD Blu-Ray remastering.

Thanks for the kind words Graham. I visited these 3 sites on a family road trip, and I had only so much time at film locations before there would have been a family munity! I would like to extend it out - I've figured out where more of the chase was filmed in Snow Canyon State Park (where Butch cools down in a puddle), so next time I'm in Utah I plan on taking photos there. And you've got me thinking about the railway scenes - it should be fairly easy to figure out where the train explosion was filmed. And I'd love to go to Tlayacapan, Mexico, where the finale was filmed. Just need time and money! I've got some photo comparisons and videos from other projects at www.stoolboom.com if you're interested.

@@stoolboom6158 I well understand about trying to shoot on a family trip, folks can be impatient to move on whilst you're still trying to find the exact spot of a location...
Speaking of which where was the exact spot of the "Jump" -was it near Baker or Trimble Bridge? You got a great photo of it.
I believe the train hold-up was in a meadow close to Durango... had to be somewhere near a road to truck in all the film equipment.
You know when my wife and I rode the Durango Silverton train both ways, it was part of a 4 state, 3,000mile trip from Los Angeles... six months in the planning with first stop Williams, where we rode the Grand Canyon Rails-to-the-Rim train; then Monument Valley staying I night each at Gouldings and the View hotels, hired Navajo guides to go off trail; then Moab -did the horse riding and the jet boat on the Colorado River; after Arizona and Utah it was on to Colorado...
You should've checked out the original TRUE GRIT locations like we did, first the iconic shootout meadow, then the town of Ridgeway where the hanging was held, the Matty Ross ranch was nearby, and the courthouse was over in Ouray and it still looked the same, only now they remodeled it.
But then we dropped down to Durango via the dangerous Million-Dollar highway... the train ride of course...
Then down to Santa Fe, stopping at the Indian pueblo used in TWO FLAGS WEST... then onto my late friends Bonanza Creek Ranch... Yes, the very one Alec Baldwin just made a crime scene out of...
Then heading West to Gallup and the famous El Rancho hotel used by numerous western crews... then onto Canyon De Chelly made famous in MCKENNA'S GOLD hired another Navajo guide to go deep in the canyon... after all that magnificent western scenery it was on to Sedona, where I did a tribute presentation on writer/producer/director Delmer Daves who shot three good pictures there BROKEN ARROW, 3:10 TO YUMA and Drum Beat -rode the Pink Jeeps to reach the locations.
Yes, I am interested in how well you've put your videos together... we just have to talk I think, so grahamhill007@sbcglobal.net

Thanks! The bicycle scene is well known so that one was easy. I read online somewhere that the knife fight scene was at the western edge of Zion National Park, so I zoomed around in Google Earth till I found it. The jump scene - that was trickier. Everyone online says it was filmed at Baker's Bridge on the Animas River near Durango. But the terrain wasn't right. I used a combination of Google Earth and Pictometry (an oblique view photo service) to find it further up river. I've found a couple more scene locations that I'll add to the video next time I have a chance to visit them and take photos (the scene where Butch falls backward into a pool of water, and the traincar explosion scene)

How did you find the location at 6:10? It's such a narrow camera angle that you can't see the surrounding area.

    • @stoolboom6158
