Using titles and subtitles (Dr, Sir, etc) to the artists on stage or otherwise sounds very phony. And, it's not fair for other artists on stage who are not given such a treatment. Just a Vid, Sri or Thiru so and so, Vid, Kumari, Srimathi or Thirumathi so and so for the prefix and Avl for the suffix, if and when needed, will suffice. In reference to those who are not alive, just use the prefix Vid or Maestro. e.g., Violin Maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Also, the tanpura artist must also be introduced. He is typically ignored. What a shame! Whatever happened to the social conscience and manners, especially to those organizers like Mr. Shashikiren who have been visiting 'civilized' countries all over the world?
However, titles can be used at the music symposiums and conferences for musicians, musicologists, etc and in academic circles where it matters most. However, titles like Kalanithi, Kalaimamani, etc to honor one's achievements in the field of music are appropriate, like all said about Vid. Santhanagopalan in this concert. And adding a Dr. to him whether he earned it or awarded to him would be very silly (e.g., Dr. Sowmya or Dr. Nithyashri).
