This is such an insane battle that almost no one has heard of - so please share on social and get the word out! Be advised, that the next part of this video is already in the process and should be out next week! In the meantime - happy early Valentines Day amazing audience!
YOU guys are the Best 😊
Top notch content, animations, voice-over, and information.
This is a great vídeo! Will you guys cover the wars against the deccan sultanates as well? It's basically when things really ramp up, with the turks showing up
@@WPrevent1on appreciated!
@@DrKarmo yeah will get to that
Angolan here, very glad to hear Portuguese history 🇵🇹🇦🇴
Portuguese here, proud to be part of the coolest family out of any language, mano! 🇦🇴🇵🇹
Abraço transcontinental irmão!
Do you know anything abt ur history with the Portuguese???
@@TheMrgoodmanners He probably does, he's just not a P U S S Y
@@TheMrgoodmanners Nice try. lemme guess? The Portuguese descend from Yakub and are devils? Listen, pssst, get closer: We're the only people who will say "preto" in the same sentence as "I love you", wrap your head around that.
You don't understand pride, nor do you really know Portuguese or Angolan history.
If you did you would know that different ethnicities had their own voice, be it in Angola or Mozambique, it wouldn't be until their inependece that Mozambique would have ethnic conflicts due to CIA and KGB influence btw.
Portugal never had colonies, only transcontinental Portuguese people of all creeds and races in their ultramaritime territories who are *our brothers,* all of whom we welcomed in Portugal when we started the process of separating our diplomacy from theirs, and granted their states full independence.
If you're gonna talk about slavery then you should know that the Ottomans and Barbary coast Muslims raided the European coast before we ever set sail from Lisbon. We invented nothing but were one of the first Nations in history to ban slavery in our lands. Also, it were Africans who raided their neighbors, except instead of selling their slaves through Mali to the Arabs, they started selling them to the Portuguese.
Brazilian here. Thanks for these so interesting portuguese adventures!
They knew how to fight!
Boy did they ever - wait till part two
Celebremos a história dos nossos antepassados comuns, irmão. Abraço transatlântico!
We believe that Duarte Pacheco Pereira arrived in Brazil first, in secret, before Pedro Álvares Cabral.
Nice, glad to see more history about our Portuguese brothers, Love from Spain.
Thanks hermano! ;)

yea thanks for helping napolean invade us hermano
I say this with no exaggeration, you are by and far one of the greatest History channels on this platform, Appreciate your work!
Wow, thank you!
Your efforts to pronounce these names have not gone unnoticed nor has your deep research.
I'm impressed.
Thanks! Thats really appreciated
Pumped for this one. Come on Portugal.
Heróis do mar.
What an incredible fight!
todos unidos !
I was waiting for this video, Duarte Pacheco Pereira is one of those characters that are a testament to mankind's potential, whatever the colour, religion or culture.
He was a man who was determined
I literally have an exam tomorrow at 9 in the morning and I'm watching history videos about 16th century portugese expansion 😂. Love it though ❤
hahaha - thats awesome. Wish you luck on your exam tomorrow!
I'm in the middle of a history exam right now haha
Can’t believe it, it happened! Seeing the recreation of the battle of Cochin was a dream. Thank you so much 👏, it is an amazing piece of work
Thanks for being patient Jose
Duarte Pacheco Pereira was a Portuguese navigator, military and cosmographer, from the 15th and 16th centuries, called "Lusitanian Aquiles" by Luís de Camões.
Congratulations for your research work.
A hug.
I find this man fascinating - warrior, philosopher, scientist, explorer, defender
One quick correction:
The sword Duarte is animated with, the rapier, was not yet standardized nor invented for yet another 50 years.
I am very happy you chose to tell the story of Duarte Pacheco Pereira, very rarely he is ever mentioned, which is bizarre.
Thank you!
Keep the Portuguese adventures coming excellent work. Will be interesting to see when they settled in Goa. Also would love to see some more material on Angola and Mozambique.
Well hoping to get the next video out next week =)
One of the greatest battles the world may never know, Duarte is one of those really underrated commanders that was unfortunate enough to get overshadowed by people like Khalid Ibn al-Walid, Mehmed the Conqueror, Subutai etc.
The Raja is nothing if not persistent, I mean if nothing else you've gotta really admire his guts and tenacity, even after suffering so many previous defeats.
Raja was a truly worthy adversary
I don't know man is easy to have tenacity and courage when you have superior numbers.
@@Orionte9against a technologically superior enemy? I don’t think so .
The Portuguese atrocities were well known to the Raja and the people of the Malabar from the stories told to them by the Arab and Persian traders .
Our families were some of the ruling vassals of the Raja north of Calicut . The Portuguese disruption of the Indian Ocean trade was so severe that Calicut never fully regained its previous glory of a thousand years . In Kerala today Kochi has taken up prominence as the more prosperous port and shipping hub.
This was the beginning of the end of an era and ignited events that led to complete weakness and eventual British colonisation and Communist revolution leading to modern day Kerala .
@@porothashawarma2339 As state in the video the Raja also had cannons. And was not a slightly advantage in numbers.
@@Orionte9Cannons and Ships as well . They had the best ships at the time and their gunnery skills were far superior.
If the Dutch hadn’t come to outmanoeuvre them then Kerala would have still been largely Portuguese like Goa . Largely , Portuguese downfall was their inability to understand the local culture of Kerala which had pre-existing Christian communities who did want their churches being latinised , that and constantly aggravating the Muslim traders as well greatly turned the locals against them . This why the Dutch and the British were more successful in Kerala after them , because they only wanted to make money .
Portuguese here, you conviced me to buy the book.
Amazing work, phenomenal pronunciation ;)
Thank you! Appreciate this comment a lot
Which book?

That was great. I love quantity vs quality fights.
I wish I was a Portuguese living in the 15th and 16th century, the planet would be my home, adventure was a daily reality and knowledge was changing as we advanced in inexistant maps that we designed for the first time in history.
Hahahaha - looking at the bright side of things Jay. You're an optimist aren't ya? 1/3 of the crews on these voyages would never return. At the same time - it would be an adventure

Concordo, genial!!💙
I still can't believe it took place! The dream of witnessing the reenactment of the Battle of Cochin came true. Your contribution is tremendously appreciated; the work is superb.
Thank you so much Mystic !
Really enjoy the entire series of Portuguese exploration. I've been fortunate enough in my travels to visit most of the places featured on the East African coast and many in India .
Amazing - I've only been to Tanzania. I bet Mombasa and Nairobi are insane.
@@FlashPointHx . Never saw Nairobi , hitch hiking in 1971 I stuck to the coastal route, from Beira to Nacala then onto Dar Es Salaam , Mombasa and Malindi. Malindi was nuts ! once found a dead 10 foot shark washed up on a beach I'd been swimming in every day ! Eventually took a boat (deck class) from Mombasa to Bombay . Explored all of west coast of India , including of course the "Hippie Haven" of Goa. Also made it to the then not often mentioned little gem that was Diu
That sounds amazing - you're definitely a traveller. Always waned to check out Dar es Salaam - closest I got was Arusha@@BrixtonTone
Absolutely brilliant! I couldn’t help but cheer when A. De Albuquerque arrived!!
Just in the nick of time!
I admit it, despite being a history buff (who even knows a bit of Portuguese history) I had not heard of this battle.
And it was so pivotal too - Pereira fell out of favor with the king and I question if this is the reason why so little is known of this battle.
You don't get taught this in compulsory education in Portugal too.
@@DLMF2010 seems like this whole battle was swept under the rug by Portugal itself
@@FlashPointHx It falls out of the scope of the curriculum, which is not focused on battles at all. They might mention a pivotal battle or two in some historic time, but that's pretty much it. Like, they mention Alcácer Quibir where King Sebastião died heirless because it led to a succession crisis in Portugal, and no details about the battle or its preparation are mentioned.
It fell out of battle because it displays the skill and tenacity of an outnumbered Christian force and them actually winning. In the modern world, with all the horrible things going out, this kind of inspiration is EXACTLY what they don't want, a small ragtag Christian force opposing the modern degenerate state
Essa serie ta muito boa, como falante de portugues me sinto muito feliz de estar vendo e acompanhando por favor continue assim
I always look forward anxiously for your new videos to come out and when they do they never fail to capture me into feeling they're only 2 minutes long.. you're my new Historia Civilis 😂.. and as a Brazilian guy, I must say I never new my portuguese ancestors were just so cunning and badass at this point of history, which is just awesome. Please keep up the good work for as long as you can!
I’m so happy you like my videos so much - wait till we get to part two of this - you’ll see just how badass Pereira really is :)

viva portugal ! we conquered the world because we the sailing templars !
Such an underrated figure... even in Portugal. Thanks for the awesome video!
Obrigado!
Hey! Thank you so much for this! Really appreciated !!
Duarte Pacheco Pereira is one of the most accomplished Portuguese Man of War of the early XVI century but his achievements as a sailor (unofficially discovered Brazil) and explorer/geographer are breathtaking. If you can read Portuguese, I firmly advise you to read his masterpiece "Esmeraldo de Situ Orbis" which is a joy to read. One of the Greats of the Age of Discoveries, his life - if put on film would be a blockbuster in Hollywood
It’s the book he wrote I believe. Yeah he was truly a renaissance man. Sadly I can’t read Portuguese. But I’ll take your word that it is epic
Thank you for exposing the herculean near mythical feats my people accomplished. Truly.
Anytime Bigtuga (cool name BTW)
Thank you for another great video. Duarte Pacheco Pereira and his men were genius ❤️
No one else could have pulled off a victory here
@@FlashPointHx,
we the Portuguese have a feeling of disappointment on our history, namely we don’t understand how we lost our empire. Your videos are making it clear that the creation of the Portuguese empire was a ‘miracle’ in the first place. Thanks for shining light on our history, which many times goes under appreciated in the world history.
@@alexfilipe impressive how a small nation could forage an empire on the other side of the planet like this!

You are so welcome! Happy to have a countryman here as well.
amazing, this translated to portuguese pal and u could honestly use this in schools out there. its amazing work. ur bringing to life the history of my people and for that we are all gratefull
Its really amazing how these tiny forces can achive victory over way larger native ones through ingenuity, brilliance, and a lit of luck. Really the europeans just feel like they have plot armor much of the time with how lucky they get. Great video!
I live epic underdog battles like this one - the fact that Pereira wasn’t just a military man, but an intellectual which aided him makes this engagement even more legendary
@@FlashPointHx Almost all of these early Portuguese explorers were aristocratic knights of religious-military orders, such as the Order of Christ, Order of Santiago, Order of Avis, which makes it rather interesting.

Interestingly Afonso de Albuquerque also attempted to capture Island of Hormuz in Persia but got defeated by Shah Abbas the Great. The guy was everywhere
He was the architect of the Portuguese Empire
He did captured Hormuz - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_conquest_of_Hormuz. We will see it in this channel in the future I guess.

How good were the logistics during this period. Usually when you hear a big number like 60 000 it's usually followed up with historians believe the number was way significantly. To feed and supply that many troops is incredible.

Afonso de Albuquerque is by far my favorite historic character. I have read several books about him. What an adventurer.
What books have you read on him? Are they in English ?
A cruel bloody tyrant though.
