Why the Vita failed

  • As a massive fan of the PSP, you can probably guess I was super hyped for the NGP, the "Next Generation Portable", as we knew the PS Vita during the rumour mill cycle.
    However, Sony fumbled the launch of the Vita in a way that made it impossible for the system to recover.
    Let's go over these issues!

    Sony gave up too easily with the Vita.
    Look at the 3DS. Nintendo had a rough first few years, but that didn't stop them from continuously pumping out games.. Slowly but surely, the library grew. And now the 3DS is one of those "must own" handhelds.

      I wonder how many people actually think about that when they're buying a console. I have to admit, I never had a Sony handheld, so I'm not sure how many memory cards you'd need. But as far as those add on costs, it doesn't seem to register with people when you talk about the Switch. Most seem to think $300 is a pretty decent price, forgetting what you need to actually use the system the way most people would want. After the $300 console, if you want to play local multiplayer you need an $80 set of Joy-Cons, but if you want a good controller for action games, add a $70 Pro-Controller. Don't forget the all but mandatory screen protector and memory card. I spent $500 on my day one purchase of the Switch, NOT counting games, but yet no one seems to criticize the Switch for expensive accessories, but for the Vita a memory stick gets blamed for it's total annihilation.

    • @ZyferWarriorPrime
      @ZyferWarriorPrime Před 6 lety +3

      @@ressljs It had a lot to do with a memory card that had an outrageous price tag while only providing the equivalence of class 4 sd card speeds.
      Games were still a factor, many wanted the 3DS just the Zelda. Between their own stupidity, greed and competition, it is not a surprise they failed. You would have thought they would have learned something from the PSP.
      The Switch isn't a comparison per say since it is more in the home console class with some portability.

    The ps vita would have sold like crazy if more ports/remasters/collecctions from ps2 games came to the system, the potential it had to be a portable ps2 library would have made it the best selling portable console imo

    • @Yodagamer1
      @Yodagamer1 Před 6 lety +6

      I think the ps2 ports we did get hurt the vita's image. It made it look like even the owner of the console didn't care and if they didn't care why should others. All ps2 sony produced ports were absolutely horrible, outside of sly which still ran at half the framerate of the ps2 version, God of war ran like crap, jak was capped at 20 fps and still had framedrops, Ratchet and Clank had control issues and game ruining glitches.

    • @Josh2Play
      @Josh2Play Před 6 lety +2

      +underwaterdick yeah, but why bother paying for a fullprice vita when the PSP did that too, you could play PS1 and PSP games on it, so the incentive to upgrade to a vita was non existent, other than you know, the Titles that the vita offers, and considering that the PS2 ports were amongst the best selling titles on the system, we could have gotten a better product overall, i'm not bashing on what the system is, i love the PS Vita, i'm just sad over what it COULD have been.

    Not mentioning the high costs of a memory card for the Vita is weird because it was an important factor for its failure and still is. Furthermore the 3ds didn't do well in the first two years either. But Nintendo did continue to support the system, Sony didn't. One other reason the Vita as well as the 3ds didn't do well in 2011-2013 were smart phones. We actually thought there will be good games on mobile which turned out to be soo wrong. Eventually in 2013/2014 the 3DS started to take off, but Sony already gave up on the system to that time. The reasons you mentioned are also correct of course.

    I say the Vita is more significant today than it has ever been. I bought an OLED one as well just a few months ago (before the h-encore hack was released) for $75. It came with a 16 gb memory and 4 games. So I hacked it, sold the games in a bundle for $20s and bought a 64gb memory and a SD2Vita with the money. Now it's loaded with all my favorite games from the PS1, PSP, PSVita, has Retroarch for oldschool games, heck it can even run counter strike, half life, etc. Custom themes, mp4 player, I could go on and on. Bottom line, I love the PS vita.

    From the Philippines!!! Hope you remember me Izzy (joined a Livestream or two and want more streams to hang), and I'm so glad that you finally did another episode on the Vita. I absolutely love the Vita but, am disappointed by how Sony's support just died for it only about a year or two from launch. And man, those memory card prices jeez, Sony at least bring the price down at this point. You should've mentioned that there is in fact a new promo Sony's doing this year, it's a silver vita (2000) with a 32gb card and its only $200. Anyways can't wait for you to do more videos on the Vita!

    I first got a Vita in 2013 but ended up selling it several years later because of the cost of memory cards and games. I wish I kept it because it was like new and it was the oled version. My cousin ditched his vita, which was the slim. I decided to take it because I realized jail-breaking it gave a second life. I was able to use microsd as a memory card, install custom themes, install any psp, ps1, or vita games. Others use it to get emulators which works great. So my point is that try getting a jailbroken vita or jailbreak your vita. In the update 3.69 and higher, Sony unfortunately patched the exploits but luckily I was already on 3.68.

    Extremely huge fan of the original psp. I hacked that thing and played with emulators and roms. It was powerful at the time to even surf the web and I was able to download AIM (yes aol instant messenger). Great little device to take anywhere and everywhere. It gave us the opportunity to have All these "apps" without needing a cellphone. I got the vita and bought games for it and it just didn't do it for me. The only game I played on it was ffxii and only came close to finishing it. I have a plethora of games (5-8)that never made it to the vita's slot. Not only that, it also took a looooong time for people to crack and hack it.

I have been playing pc for the past 5 or so years and cleaning my basement I found my PSP 1000 I bought when it came out and than my Nintendo DSL next to it. Doing some research for games on them led me to this channel and i put CFW on PSP and i love emulating it. For me all these games are new and am loving buying and collecting games for em.

So far I got GBC, GBA SP (10$), Game Boy Micro ($1 lol), My NDSL and a second one I found yesterday at thrift outlet almost new for $2, my PSP, a retail brand new New 2DS XL and a 3DS XL i was able to find for $40, red in almost brand new condition in a box. I'm loving collecting handhelds and games for these systems. This channel is like gasoline to fire when it comes to handhelds.

    The Vita's launch line up was pretty damn amazing, considering it had Uncharted: Golden Abyss, BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend, Hotshots Golf: World Invitational, Lumines Electronic Symphony, Rayman Origins, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Virtua Tennis 4, and Wipeout 2048. If you count the entire month it launched in, then you also get stuff like Gravity Rush, Tales from Space: Mutant Blob Attacks, Plants vs. Zombies, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus, Touch My Katamari, and Super Stardust Delta.
    Admittedly, it's heavy on ports, but they're largely PS3 quality ports that you can play on the go.

    As a Vita owner I can see a few reasons that it failed. First: The majority of it's small library of titles are JRPGs. While there are many fans of that style of gaming, they are a small segment of the gaming world. Second, the Vita is hard to hold and play, it does not feel good in your hands while playing it. The DS and 3DS has better ergonomics. Third: Price, The console is expensive, the memory is expensive, the games cost twice as much as the 3DS titles and cost about the same as the home console titles. I also have the PSTV ( which also failed and for the same reasons), it plays some of the Vita titles on a TV using a PS3 or PS4 controller. I find this a much better way to play those titles.
