PSP vs PSPgo: WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU GET?

- As a massive fan of the PSP, not a day goes by without people asking me questions about this incredible portable.
A lot of people are curious about the OG PSP design (be it the 1000, 2000 or 3000, those last two having by and large changed relatively little from the original 2004 hardware), and the PSPgo, the more drastic redesign Sony introduced in 2009.
I love both, but I personally prefer the PSPgo -- even if it's objectively the worse PSP out there. Lemme explain why!

Do you have a favorite front end you use for your emulators?
Only one thing, the non GO psp's indeed can charge from the mini USB port but it needs to have battery to start charging and it takes forever to charge, the yellow connector is the real charging port, wich was very common in portable devices of the Sony brand back then
Are there 3rd party docks for the PSP go?
Classic example for online purchase of games is Wii Store as it is closed only recently they had some great retro games on that.
Hey psp2000 silver user here from Portugal! Cheers!!
Years ago I got the PSP 3000. I soon installed a custom firmware and ever since then I rarely touch my GBA. With a micro SD to memorystick adapter I can fit my entire childhood in to one device.
I also use it for watching movies and listening to music while travelling. Hands down the best portable I've ever had.
Also, hello from Greece.
I mean people rarely touch their GBA's for other reasons but ok
@@spring1242 Screen visibility is really poor, that's the main reason I stopped using it.
I still have it in (almost) working condition and power it up from time to time for nostalgic reason though. The power switch almost gives up but nudge it a bit and it'll work.
Beaver's Hobby yes the screen visibility was awful. I remember straining my neck and hands to play trying to keep the GBA at an angle that allowed for enough light to shine on the screen to be see anything at all. Cursing the device that Nintendo didnât put any back light which I kind of would expect even back at that time. I ended of selling the thing out of disappointment.
Same here, a PSP running PSX, Gameboy Color-Advance games and more is one of the best portable consoles you can get. I still have my old Gameboys though, rarely use them, but I like to keep them in great condition by changing shells, screens, buttons etc, whatever needs to be changed. Just for nostalgia reasons.
Also a CFW 3DS is a great choice for portable gaming.

Greetings from South Korea!
As an owner of a PSP-1000, I flashed CFW on it just a few days ago. Since then I have done quite a bit of work on it. I got a MicroSD to Memory Stick Duo adapter and upgraded the storage from 2GB to 128GB, dumped and backed up my entire UMD library, and had my original battery's cell replaced. Also ordered a PSP-2000 from eBay for as insurance should mine no longer function and for curiosity's sake since it was cheaper than buying a modern AAA game :)
I'd give the edge to the original PSP design over the PSP go. I like that Sony gave it a screen with 3000's improvements without the scanlines, added Bluetooth, and added usable internal storage. However, I don't think the extreme forward-thinking decision to go download-only was the smart decision to make in terms of sales. But then, the 3000 was still sold, so maybe Sony wasn't serious about selling lots of PSP go units. Other than lacking UMD support, the proprietary connection/charging port over the PSP's Mini-USB and barrel port also prevents me from seriously considering the go.

Good review. I spent 16 years as a professional game developer, and PSP was by far the most interesting system I ever developed on. No question in my mind that something went horribly wrong during chip fabrication, and that one or more things that were originally supposed to work on it didn't, resulting in the crippling main bus bottleneck. What we got left with was a system with some really unusual technical constraints that required major refactoring of conventional graphics engine code. UMD issues just rubbed salt into the wound. That said, I'll always have a soft spot for that particular piece of kit.

I wish this video came out 2 months ago, when I bought a PSP Go because the screen on my old 2000 had some waterdamage. It sums up all the proâs and cons perfectly, great job!
The Go is beautiful and very portable, but the battery is pretty weird like you said. Canât really tell how much juice it has left. Might eventually even go and find myself another 2000.
Greetings from the Netherlands!
Yeh men get a psp2000 it has alot of pros like you can change it's casing and buttons pretty easily and do a hardware mod for a 5000mah batt.
you can get a replacement screen pretty cheap these days.. done that also to my psp 3000
So the 2000 is better and how is the PS1 emulation on it as it's only got one joystick right?
@@swaggyt609any information on a mod videos ect and why do you think it's better?
Hey, ik wist niet dat er meer Nederlanders kijken naar izzy!
Thanks a ton for the help Izzy! Iâve been struggling with which one to use, since I have both, but now that I know I can charge via usb, it makes the decision a lot easier
I absolutely LOVE my PSP Go, and I bought ALL the accessories for it - multiple memory cards, TWO of the official docks, even the official Sony Component Cables and an awesome hard leather flip-case made by Sony. I played with my PSP-1000 for a year or so, modded it, played some games, and then bought the PSP Go right around the time Playstation Plus launched (Summer 2009, I think) and LOADED that sucker with games. PSP Minis (indie games), PS1 Classics, and a TON of PSP games. I love the PSP Go so much.
I was watching a video a couple months back about the best PSP games and decided to break it back out to play some games. I charged it, booted it up, and went into the store and then (as you mentioned) I realized that my entire library of games, probably over $1,000 of titles at least (lots of JRPGs that never went on sale) are no longer available to access without breaking out my PS3 and syncing up that way. Luckily I still have most of my favorite games like Jeanne D'arc. all the PS1 Square games, and my beloved Powerstone collection, but there's so much I can no longer get on my PSP, and as a consumer who went all-in with Sony's digital-only push in an attempt to support that model, I just felt absolutely betrayed.
At this point, there's nothing else to do other than mod it and steal all the games I originally purchased, and that really makes me reserved about giving Sony money for future digital titles.
That being said, I stopped dabbling with emulation on my PSP-1000 when I got the PSP Go, and have been on a big GBA kick recently. Seeing this video got me pumped to boot it back up and see how much the scene has changed. I was always a little underwhelmed with the PSP emulation scene, while there was a ton of great stuff out there, the performance always felt just a little less than perfect...a decade later I bet things are smooth sailing so perhaps that'll be a fun project for this week to get it all back up and running. I'll research the PSP Go a bit more and if I find it shouldn't be too easy to accidentally brick, I might just mod that sucker as well.
Just discovered your channel and I'm loving your content!
I'm REALLY wanting a PSP Go, I love the form factor and I'm a sucker for slidey things. I wish they'd bring back slide phones just like the Go.

What can I do if my psp 3000 is dead(no battery) and I have lost the original charger? it's not set to charge on mini USB and I can't find a reliable or cheap psp charger any where near where I live.
I have Psp E100 and it still working but the start button is broken. I can't find replacement parts.
PSP-2000 or 3000 hands are great. AND they can use the TV to component cables! I love my PSPgo but you can not deny the value you get from the PSP 2000/3000 models. Awesome video, thanks!
My brother and I also have the TV cables for our PSP 3000s. We normall hook up 1 psp to the TV and AD HOC both PSP together to play on 1 screens on our SNES games. So oretty much we can play 2 player Donky Kong Country 2 on the big Screen or play PSP games 2 players on seperate screens.
Iâd truthfully say the psp go is my favorite device I never had, I did finally find one for cheap though itâll be here tomorrow. But the psp is the way to go I loved mine it was literally the coolest system Iâve owned in my opinion
Did you end up getting it? How was it?

Now itâs telling me to activate it in order to play the games. I donât want to lose my games and and my save data. Please help me fix it.
im looking to buy a ps vita but unsure what is the best firmware to look for. what firmware version would be best to look for so i can get into some emulation?
Damn I actually have that dock. Didn't know it was that rare.
Always watch your vid when it involves the psp!
My question is what model should I get now i am getting the regular but should I get the model 1000? 2000? or 3000? and whatâs the difference between them?
Games for the psp are made widescreen ?
So, in the psp go it looks squashed or just more small?
I got a PSP on day one, September 1st 2005, and it woks perfect. But I felt in love with the PSPgo the day I saw it and bought a second-hand one years later. Don't regret it. Love having both, and I also have a Vita. From Spain.
Bought a PSP GO White from a second hand shop about 2 months ago mainly because of your vids :D And I was a little worried because of the battery indicator on the SNES Emulator just showed "scary" percentage.. This video explains a lot and put my mind at ease :D
So where to get a games for the psp go? Because i cant fine on there website.
How fif you get the stamina pack on the psp? I can't find one anywhere?
I've had my psp go for quite a few years but only recently started modding and putting emulators and games on it as well. I have to say it is amazing having such a small portable device capable of playing almost all of the classics on. Although I am looking into getting a normal psp just to compare the two. But all in all I would highly recommend the psp go.
Great Vid! I just pulled my old silver PSP-2000 out and replaced it's very swollen battery to play some Klonoa and CTR PSOnes on it. It's my own version of the PSClassic :D
CFW infinity + battery mod. CZcams is your friend.
Same with my battery. How should i fix it?
I have a PSP 2000 but the analog stick broke on it and moves around on its own, making it unplayable. I understand this is a very common problem with this model. Does the PSP Go have a redesigned one that doesn't have this problem?
Hey man, know where I can find a PSP 1000 battery replacement? I got one but the battery in it swell. So until I find a replacement, it's kinda useless. Which makes me sad ;(
I'd totally be down with getting a PSP Go in the future, I absolutely adore the PSP and would love to have one compact enough to be an excuse to carry it around with me. The lack of UMD drive would normally be a big turn off for me, but I already have a modded PSP 3000 that I use to rip my UMDs to the MemoryStick (both for the convenience of having all my games right there, and for improved battery life since I'm not using the UMD drive), so I can just mod my Go as well and throw all my ISO files on there. If I get a new UMD game, I can just rip it on my 3000 then transfer it over to my Go. Easy.
Or just download the CSO/ISO files online and just get any game you want đ€
The regular PSP is better for me. Mainly because thatâs what me and my brother used until the memory stick failed and the battery got fried.
I did use my friendâs PSPGo for a while, but the smaller screen didnât do it for me.
Hello from the Philippines
Are any of them harder to mod than others? It seems like a lot of people have the 2000 but I'm looking at getting one of the jpn 3000 because of the color but I just want to make it easy.
In Regular PSP when we charge the psp (Battery low) from USB cable what happens
This is very helpful! Thank you legend â€ïž
I own both and I think these two handled are complementary. For example, I still use my PSP Slim to play my UMD games (even if I dumped some ones on my memory stick through an homebrew), whereas I prefer using my PSP Go to play games on an emulator (its internal storage is pretty useful to stock all my ROMS and some options too, like the "pause mode" - I don't know how you say that in English, I'm French - that enables to leave your game and continue it later, without having to reload the emulator and your ROM in two times). Furthermore, it's so fun to play some games when you "close" the console (when your screen is over your buttons) - I think about Locoroco that is playable with L/R buttons and some GBA games (the process is simple: you active the option L=A in Pokémon for example, and you pass the dialogues by pressing L with your console closed). By the way, I probably seem such a weirdo lol
What about vs. the ps vita? also is the original psp pretty much the same as this one you are reviewing?
Would the Go be better for the battery since its harder to get the psp batteries now?
It's funny that you posted this video as I recently took both mine and my husband's psps' out of storage. I had to buy replacement batteries for both because they had swollen so much they popped off the covers. We have been playing them quite a lot and I am remembering why I had loved it in the first place. It's a great system and had always held a special place in my heart.

I look at it the same way I did back when the psp go came out. The original 3 psp models are better because they have more features and are more user accessible. Like being able to change the battery or use physical media. Also I find them more comfortable to hold. The only thing those models lack is the bluetooth but thats not really that huge of a deal. Point is the models before the go had more features. It's a no brainer for anyone debating about what model to get imo. I'd say the psp 2000 is the best because the 3000 screen looked off to some people but either one is a good choice regardless compared to the go. If you could care less about physical media I'd say get the go. Psp is great in general although now your better off getting a vita if you can get one on the right firmware because it's definitely a superior platform with cfw.
Do I need my psn account to download the games that were already on that system and I deleted them even if Iâm logged into my account
Hmm I have a white psp Go I've just purchased and have put cfw on it.could anyone suggest the best and most recent emulators for it ? Thanks đ
I've honestly always liked the go more than the normal version. I just like the small size of it and the sliding feature. I remember a few years ago, my dad and I went out to pawn shops to look for one, and the first one we went to had it. It had a price of $150, but we told them we've seen them cheaper online so they dropped it to $70 for us. My favorite part about modding it is the homebrew games. I would have never learned about the history of PC gaming if I hadn't downloaded my first quake mod (it was a mod that gave you the portal gun in quake 1). I still love my PSP go and ended up giving my old PSP to my friend a couple years ago
I have a PSP 3000 modded for NES and SNES. Itâs just an amazing little device. Iâm planning on getting a second one just as a normal device, or two in case I want to play multiplayer games with my cousins.
Modded PSP's can still run multiplayer games via ad-hoc wireless. The arcade CPS 1&2 emulators even support it for old Capcom arcade games! I believe the NeoGeo emu also supports it.
Rusty Shackleford odd, last time I tried it did not work. Also i would have to buy a second because I am the only one with one at the moment lol.
@@no_4259 - As long as the PSP game specifically supports ad-hoc communication, it should work. There's no server or authentication to get around.

Hmm, I never heard about that battery life thing for the Go. Looking into it, it seems the hardware just doesn't have the right parts to read from the battery. I've always wanted a Go for the portability and Bluetooth, but this bugs me so much that I kinda don't know how I feel about the Go now. Thanks for the new info Izzy, deeply appreciated!

i love it
Sense I've gotten the note 9 I kinda stopped playing on my ps4 an PSP. I just put emulators on it then link my ps4 controller
What about the LCD quality comparison? How much better is the screen on the Go?
I love my PSP, but I am getting annoyed by the dated LCD's quality on my 2000 Slim. Is the Go an upgrade if I simply want a better screen, with out the bulkiness of a Vita?
Also, with USB charging aside, do both units use the same standard charging cable?
Isn't there a way to load psp roms into the go and play them like normal downloaded games ?

La batteria della mia PSP 2000 funziona perfettamente.
The ONLY thing I had against the PSP GO is that you can't find M2 cards anymore (past 16gb) while even a NON-hacked PSP (though mine's soft modded) can use a Micro SD-to-Pro Duo adaptor. (Yeah, I know there's an option available for the GO, but by comparison, it not a real convenient one - I just don't like the idea of having an inch or so long ribbon cable sticking out of the card slot.)
(BTW, I'm watching on a Shield TV, but commenting using a phone/tablet.)
I did the dummy converter and it actually doesn't stick out of the slot at all, it folds back and tucks behind the back case of the Go. You can't even tell it's there.
@@sac916jared (shrugs) In that caseâŠ
@@spectre9792 I should also add that the ribbon cable mod is definitely finicky. Getting the connection right can take multiple tries, and there's always the possibility that the connection could fail down the line and you'd need to pop the back off your Go and fiddle with it to get it working again. Not a huge deal but something to consider. Once it's dialed in though there is nothing sweeter, I added 128GB to mine and it's basically made my Go my most played system now lol.

Combine that with several remastered collections of PS2 games available natively for the Vita, such as all the PS2 God of War, Jack & Daxter, and Sly Cooper games, as well as great emulator support (everything the PSP can do and more) and the ability to stream games from your PS4 or PC via remote play, it's a no brainier.
yep vita is an all in one super package
i hacked mine for secondary analog stick camera mod
Jak and dexter plays like ass.
That all goes out the window if:
1) You don't do homebrew
2) The Vita makes your hand cramp up, even with added grips.
For me, PSP 2000 > The Vita
Fair enough, but if your using a PSP or a Vita and you're not running Homebrew on it, then I really have to wonder why you're even using them.
The hackability and homebrew features on either system is pretty much the primary selling point for each of them right now.
As for the comfort issue, that really does differ person to person, so I can't really refute you, but there are a TON of different types of grips out there and if you shop around a bit your bound to fine one that does work for you. I personally use this one ( amzn.to/2TVXuvt ) that adds in actual buttons for L2, R2, L3, & R3 to make playing my PC games via Moonlight a much smoother and more comfortable experience.
@@Timboman2000 Why? To play my PSP games. Emulation may be your primary reason, but it isn't mine. I don't care about playing NES, SNES, Genesis, or whatever on my PSP. Don't give a toss about emulation.
Still have my PSP 3004, had the original PSP as well but gift it to a friend for his birthday since he wanted a PSP so badly but couldnt afford one.
Nice
Hey mate, can you compare all the pspâs, because the ps vita now have the âjailbreakâ, and the price is very similar to the anotherâs, but more powerful. How do you think?
What are the differences between the 1000, 2000 and 3000 versions?
I love my Vita 2000 but i really do wish i had the Vita 1000 for its build quality and OLED screen as opposed to the LCD and plastic build the 2000 offers. I have a SD2Vita card in my vita LOADED with games from my childhood from the SNES, GBA, *Some* n64 games, LOTS of PS1 games, PSP games, and of course the newer Vita games and ports. And to this day, there's still games being released for the system from indie devs. So to answer your question: C, None of the above. My favorite is the Vita. (Hello from the US)
Brandon Anderson, I emulate games from my iPad, so itâs easier that way for me.
@Vegito Charmara - PSP struggles on many SNES games that I play, like Battletoads. TurboGrafx-16 emulation on PSP doesn't work for several titles, such as Battle Royale & Super Star Soldier. The Vita successfully runs these & alot more.
Argentina. Have a PSP Go but I prefer the 3000 model
Hi Izzy, great video as always. What about the notorious problems with joystick of the psp fat? Still a better choice than the one on the go?
which one is faster and better for Emulation?
So today my Latin teacher took my PSP-3000 because I was playing Super Metroid in class. I just donât like Latin, luckily heâs pretty easy-going so there werenât any consequences.
By the way, hello from the Netherlands!
The Stopmotion Makers they speak English over there?
PSP 2000
I got myself a PSP 3000 recently for RM190 he was a bit relunctant on selling me at that price but I managed to get him to.The thing is I felt myself cheated that when I got home I found out that the analog stick is broken.I already noticed that when I tried it out when buying it but the owner just set it fine long enough for me to think it is fine.Got home, try to fix it myself and it was broken for good.
Should I try my luck and get another second hand psp?
Thats sucks that you bought a psp for that price with a broken analog. I would be pissed or would of asked for it cheaper. But even with a broken analog you can still play emulators without it. Pretty much the only game systems that you wont play is N64 & PSP games. But you can still play Playstation 1.
I would suggest use this PSP 3000 for now. Then later on get another one working properly. Keep the PSP with the broken Analog for spere parts. Because that comes in handy. I had to replace my Boughts & screen over time through out the years.
*replaced buttons & screen* i ment.
I got my 3004 for 27$ with a tv component / charger /case/5 umds (i feel the price u paid for was too high don't you think)
Okay so which would be better the psp 3000 or the psp vita?
I have a psp go, do you think I should buy the Xperia Play? Cause my friend really need the money, but at the same time I already have a psp go, so it's a ummm... Cause both almost have the exact same form factors, both can do emulators, both use memory stick micro pro duo (M2) đ€đ€đ€
I love all PSP but the first one was so sensitive the lense broke really easy so I decide it get a gameboy advance for my kid he didn't touch it sold it got a Nintendo DS he didn't even look at it I found out a guy that sales modded PSP with 64 games PlayStation games supernintendo & Sega even gameboy advance games my kid dint even let me touch his PSP now he even sleep with it đž
Question is PSP or PSV?
I have both and mostly use it for using the internet and playing video games
Great video! The ribbon issue was also a problem on the Playstation Phone(R800x) as well. While not totally fun to repair. It can be done! Very cool, thanks again!
I, on the other hand, love repairing stuff. I like seeing the internals and what not, and yeah ribbon cables are really easy to fix.
I want to download psone games on the psp. How do I do that? I have a ps4 no ps3
