  • - Qui aimes-tu, homme énigmatique, dis ? ton père, ta mère, ta soeur ou ton frère ?
    - Je n'ai ni père, ni mère, ni frère, ni soeur.
    - Tes amis ?
    - L'or ?

it was a genius move of Kubrick to combine this with stargate sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey; it really emphasises the notion that what you're seeing is way beyond the comprehension of the human mind, and makes it utterly terrifying

As an introduction, I would have chosen this text instead for Ligeti :
"Coldness and damp. An ungodly stench. The boy clutched his throat. He could see part of a stone wall. Clay floor. An old matress darkly stained. He crouched and stepped down again and held out the light. Huddled against the back wall were naked people, male and female, all trying to hide, shielding their faces with their hands. "
    Cormac McCarthy, "The Road".

This is a prime example of "micropolyphony" which is probably Ligeti's main contribution to the development of music. Very cool, except at 3:45 or so it sounds like a very scratchy record. Is that part of the music, or is it a scratchy record? I just bought the complete works of Ligeti on CD and am picking it up at the post office tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out.

Ligeti didn't know his music was being used for the film's score until he attended 2001's premiere in Vienna. That's pretty disgusting of Kubrick /MGM to do such a thing, (Kubrick's family and the greedy film studio don't even allow some of his film's free viewings even now in 2020). Ligeti had to sue for any compensation for using his music which they distorted in parts as well....what gall! Still shockingly enough Kubrick went on to use his music in latter films and did compensate him well for it. I can't say would have had any more dealings with Kubrick / MGM after 2001, Ligeti most likely saw the fame and money in turning the other cheek I would assume.
