I’m not a fan of the price hike. I understand where they are coming from but you just had a price hike not too long ago. This is showing me. You don’t have all your stuff together because you should’ve gotten this concept straightened out about cost months ago now is not the time to come to people and say hey we just had a price hike. We’re going up again. It looks bad even if the price is minimal which it is it still looks bad.

This is just too much. I cannot buy a console for $300, and sink just as much for a subscription. Gamepass is a luxury service now, even at the standard price. It’s a “buy once a year” to play all of the games that came out that year service. No wonder they don’t come out with a yearly tier. They know they’ve out priced themselves from that. A Lamborghini can still be the best deal in luxury cars, but it doesn’t mean the people will all buy it

Peoplea subscribe to tons of 10 dollar subs that are useless but gamepass is worth it. 20 dollars a month is 240 dollars a year. Minus 60 dollars for online you need to pay for anyway is 180 dollars. Just playing 3 new full price games a year makes up for it. You already saved 30 dollars by that. Not to mention you can use it on PC, perks, EA Play, and all the other games. I'm not just playing 3 games per year, so it's still worth it. If you only play 1 or 2 offline games per year, then Yea, don't subscribe.

It was a great deal when I would play a few AAA Xbox game for a few months, and I’d save money by just renting it with game pass vs spending $70 per game. But if I’m only playing 1-3 AAA Xbox games per year and the monthly price starts approaching half the price of buying the game, why wouldn’t I just buy it so I can own it and replay it later on?

GamePass losing it's "Day 1" association already happened when they replaced Xbox Live Gold with GamePass Core, this is just an extension of that confusion. But yea, they should redo their summer showcase ending each trailer with "Day 1 on GamePass Ultimate".
For me this is essentially a $9 price hike, since I don’t play multiplayer on Xbox outside of Halo Infinite (free to play), I just subscribed to the console tier whenever games I wanted to play came out. Now I’ll have to weigh out whether Call of Duty or whatever is worth a $20 rental versus $11. May as well just wait for sales at that point unless they’re true must-plays.

On a case by case basis? That's crazy. "Coming to game pass" has lost all meaning with this change. They might as well change it to coming to game pass ultimate. Just get rid of the tiers, core and standard are irrelevant, and you know the people grandfathered in console game pass will eventually get an email saying the ride is over buddy, upgrade or leave. Sell your xbox and build a mid tier gaming pc, components have dropped in price in the last 6 months, and you will not regret it.

Also, if money was an issue, I would just stick with consoles. The idea of building a PC on a console or near-console budget is unappealing. I'd rather spend much more and get closer to state of the art technology/performance. The need (or urge) to upgrade would be pushed out, too.

I understand this is purely a me issue that I'm not using it, but when I scroll though there's nothing I really want to play.

Yep, this is the real move. I subscribed to GP for a while at the start of the console generation, but now, I only subscribe for one month here and there when I want to play something day one. Just not enough time to take full advantage of the sub consistently month over month, and this is a cheaper way to enjoy brand-new games immediately.
It seems like they're trying to discourage that by moving day one releases to a new, more expensive tier, but it's still cheaper than paying full price for a single game, so idk if it will work. I think they have a real loyalty problem with GP.

I feel like the thing that's going under the radar is the Game Pass Core increase, from $60/yr to $75/yr. That's a 25% increase, as opposed to the 18% Ultimate increase. I know it's not a popular plan right now, but hypothetically, let's say that Game Pass goes up to $25/mo or even higher, and isn't the deal it once was. If ALL YOU WANT TO DO is hold onto the games you were "gifted" as a Gold member throughout the Xbox One days, that means that you're STILL on the hook for $75/yr. Same for if you just want online gaming. That's a pretty tough pill to swallow.

Ok but let’s Be real, the 14.99 for ultimate 5 years ago isn’t the same as it is now in this economy. Inflation hits everything and 15 is more like 20-25 in today’s value of the dollar. Microsoft is paying more for studios, they are paying more for labor and they are paying higher prices in everything else for the increase of goods and labor for their suppliers. The fact that people are mad about a 5$ increase in the last 2 years is mind boggling. This is the world we live in and to Tim’s point, 25-30$ a month for gamepass isn’t out of the realm of possibility, in fact it’s on track with everything else.

I've got to say...the $12 pc price point is a little much for me - especially for a rotating selection of games. I remember I had progress in a game that left gamepass at one point, which sucked. If there's a single-player game I would only play through for the campaign, then maybe I'd sub for a month. But that's about what I pay in a steam/fanatical/gog sale for a full game regardless.
If WoW or DDO was included for $20 / month, then I'd probably join. If it included a cloud PC like Shadow streaming services so that you could do it from a hotel on anything with a gamepad or mouse and keyboard, that would be amazing. But that's pretty niche. I also want to be able to mod and try to linux port stuff and LAN game when possible, and the DRM is a big hit to value when they aren't selling live-service games. For comparison, PC has the humble bundle, where one month gives you permanent DRM-free access to 200+ titles that you could mod. The landscape on PC is a bit more competitive for a service like this.

And it's kind of proven out that game pass is not good for the industry. And it's not sustainable. And the price was always going to go up. And the intent was never to provide a great deal for gamers but to disrupt the market and obliterate traditional game purchasing habits and then jack the prices like Netflix does

That whole section was so crazy, they must be living in a bubble. The worst part was Tim saying that it's still the best deal in gaming, until the monthly price is as expensive as a full price game lmao.
This whole "Best deal in gaming" thing always put me off a bit tbh (not least because it sometimes comes off a bit as cheerleading and advertising for Xbox) - because obviously it's completely subjective for each gamer. One person might love the variety of games and spend 3-4 hours a day playing all sorts on it. Another person might only have limited time to game, and isn't really into whatever games are on the service on a particular month.
Point is, it's not just all about *how many* games are on a service - time is a limited resource, and for the majority of people gaming is a hobby that they only get some hours in every so often through a week/month. So to say that even as a subscription service goes up to 20/25 a month is still "The Best Value in Gaming" - I just don't buy that at all. At a certain point, no matter what you're getting, it's just very expensive. I think what you'll see more of now is Xbox's games going up in sales numbers, as more people opt to buy the odd game outright if that's all they want to play at that time - rather than subscribe month on month. It's all money to Xbox at the end of the day.

The constant "best deal" is just marketing push that is meant to convince people to sub to their service that is not viable long term for the consumer or the gaming industry, or even Xbox itself at this point. It doesn't matter if there is a technical mathematical value argument to be made insofar as you having access to (x) amount of games, which if bought individually would add up to (y) and you're ONLY paying (z), because that does nothing to account for the actual value to individuals, their wallets, and the lack of profits on the developer/publisher end. Are there some people who actually play games enough, across enough titles, to justify their year over year spending on the service? Sure, otherwise the service would have never got off the ground. But it feels very disingenuous to conflate the idea of a "best deal" on paper with a "best deal" for the consumers in reality. The fact of the matter is a large chunk of the people they want to bring in just do not have that kind of time or interest. They end up playing the same few games despite having the service and would be MUCH better served with their wallets to just buy the few games out right and have as much time as they need to want to play at their leisure without fear it will be removed from the service before you finish. Gamepass relies on the same thing that all subscriptions services in the modern age do - they bank on auto renewals and people not paying attention to what they are paying for (or whats missing) while they wait for the promised games that will be 'worth it' month over month instead of paying once the product has been proven and delivered. Its the netflix-ification of subs. Now more price hikes and who gets day-ones, despite that being THE thing they had going for them? No thanks.

Minus $75 a year for online that equals to $13.75 a month for day 1 releases and the gamepass library. That's still a good deal for a lot people. Now you won't find the good playstation or Nintendo games on there so for me personally as of right now gamepass isn’t for me. But for a lot it's still a good deal. 28:40 - People know, they just don't care. Gaming media has been harping on about GP being the "best deal in gaming" for 5 years+ now. In reality, for most people, including hardcore users but especially casual users who are time-restrained and not money-restrained, it really isn't the best deal in gaming by a long shot.
The value proposition of GP drops rather quickly if you don't care about some of the games being put on there, if you play any sort of GaaS game, if you have limited time, if you have a backlog, if you wait for sales, if you care about owning games, the list goes on. The price hike just makes all of this even more true.
I'm a pretty "hardcore" gamer (easily game 20+ hours per week if not more) and GP (and any other gaming sub) would be a terrible "deal" for me. The games I care about don't make it to the service until long after they've been released and been on sale. I care about owning (physical) games so I can revisit them or lend them to friends. I have dozens of games in my backlog and new ones release at a faster pace than I can clear the ones in my backlog. Money is not my main constraint, it's time. I would get zero value out of it.
Gaming is nothing like music and TV/movies. You can consume a movie (or two) in one evening. You can listen to dozens of songs while commuting or working out. The latter is often done passively. Games on the other hand often require dozens of hours to complete, and require constant attention and inputs to do anything. Not to mention with gaming these days you have plenty of high-quality F2P games like Valorant and Genshin Impact. You don't have such a thing with movies or music. Nor are there movies or songs any sane person can spend 100s of hours on, unlike any given (F2P) live service game. This is why the whole notion of a "Netflix of gaming" was stupid and misguided from the get-go, and it's just another example in a long list of Microsoft completely misreading the market and consumer habits. Them thinking they can reach "3 billion gamers" by putting Cloud versions of their games on mobile phones will be another example in that list.
GP would've been more attractive in the 90s where you had to spend $60 on every game, F2P games were mostly crappy browser games, and games only lasted like 10-15 hours. Now, it's trying to solve an issue that has long stopped being an issue. Money is not the main barrier of entry to gaming it once was. It is in fact time and a lack of interest that are now the main blockers for people getting into games and GP doesn't alleviate those issues, it just adds to them. They created a service that just makes their hardcore users spend less while failing to appeal to a wider gaming audience.
As for the GP changes, the main selling point of GP over something like PS+ was day one games. Now half of the GP tiers (and 2 out of 3 tiers on console) no longer offer day one games, making the service essentially a worse version of PS+ since PS+ has nearly double the amount of games on it while being cheaper and PS just has better games in general. Still calling it the undisputed "best deal in gaming" at this point just sounds totally out of touch with reality. It never was the best deal in gaming, but even for people who are heavily into catalogue subscription gaming, PS+ will now be the better deal for anyone that doesn't care about day one releases.

I cannot stand Tim’s out of touch take yet again on this “best value in gaming” nonsense. Can we get someone else on the show to talk about this please?

It’s always funny listening to talking heads who are so removed from reality of game subscriptions because they get all their games for free lol
    Game pass is awesome!

    $25 per month = $300 per year
    AAA Games are $70
    $300 / $70 = 4.28 games
    The questions:
Is access to potentially 4 AAA games a year a good value for you?
Do they put out 4 AAA a year you are interested in?
    Only you can answer this

You are really wasting your time. This math is too advance for gaming community. They'll just complain regardless.
