People are so funny. Guys - she works from home, has her own garden, lives in a lower cost of living area, so yes, she's able to do things you're not. That's ok!! The point is to see how someone different than you does things and take and apply that to your own life in whatever way you can or makes sense to you. If you don't have the ability or desire to do anything, then just watch it for fun!! My goodness.

I think this is great for a family your size. I think alot of people also struggle with cooking the cheaper items that are in season because they don't know what to do with it. A great video idea i think would be a "what's in season and how to cook it 3 different ways." With things that aren't as "easy" like squash.

I love your video idea. Spaghetti squash is a fun one. It can be shredded with a fork after being cooked and it turns into "noodles." The seeds can also be roasted with cinnamon, sugar, or other spice for a fancy fall treat like you can buy at Trader Joes. For years I ate gluten free, fancy, and mostly organic and we ate way cheaper than most people conventionally did, because we knew to avoid things that said it was gluten free and we just did it naturally, and like you said, eat in season. Three ways is a GREAT idea.

    • @kristyb5821
      @kristyb5821 Před 2 lety +3

Cindy, my friends think I’m insane for having a well stocked house. They don’t understand how we have steak or shrimp once a week. Well it’s because I shop sales. I dropped $73 on a half ribeye on Labor Day but that provided us with 10 really large steaks, 1 steak is enough for our family of 3 with sides like a potato and vegetable. I also bought some T-Bone steaks last weekend since they were on sale for $6.99 per pound. (Normally they are nearly $20 per pound) It was the same price as ground beef in my area so I filled my cart up with some steaks. I also buy shrimp when it’s on sale. I caught a good sale on that Labor Day weekend at $11.98 for a 2 lb bag plus a BOGO on the 2 lb bags. There was a limit of 4 bags so I bought 8 lbs of shrimp for $24. That was cheaper than chicken breasts. It will feed my family 8 dinners. I bought pork loin at $1.79 per pound and had it sliced into chops. For $20 I had 14 dinners for my family. I also scored some boneless, skinless chicken breast for $0.99 per pound the week before Labor Day. I bought everything they had, $15 for the whole thing and that’s 15 dinner with leftovers for my family. I use coupons, I buy store brands, I shop the sales, etc.
My granny taught me very early if you keep your house stocked at all times you will never have to pay full price for anything. I took that lesson to heart. This month I have spent more on groceries than I normally do but I always set so much money aside each paycheck to use as a stock up fund for when you find incredible deals and don’t want to impact your grocery budget. For us we set $25-50 a week aside for a stock up fund. We have done that for 7 years so we have a pretty sizable stock up fund now. We keep it in a separate bank account from our main account just to make sure it doesn’t accidentally get intermingled with our bill money and use it when we see fit. The steaks and shrimp were definitely worth dipping into the stock up fund for.

I think people constantly call BS on this because they’ve never meal planned, are used to buying convenience items and don’t shop sales or Aldi. I’ve seen these “call outs” a million times in Dave Ramsey groups and it’s always people who don’t want to meal plan or shop sales. That’s fine if you don’t want to do that but just know your food bills will probably be crazy. I don’t think what you do is unrealistic at all.
I also constantly see people shopping at very expensive stores or say “I live in an expensive area” well no sh*t your bills are high. An example, Trader Joe’s is not actually a cheap place and people are always dropping $100 on tons of junk from there saying “look at my deals!”
We used to do steaks a lot. I shopped around the Meijer sales and froze. Well, now beef is complete insanity, so we are on cheaper proteins with steak from time to time IF I find a deal.
Our food bills are dumb because my husband refuses to buy anything but brand, convenience items and shops at the expensive stores. I shop at Aldi and Walmart + meal plan. My portion of the food bill is significantly less. We are a family of 3 and spending double, stupidly. So I speak from experience. If my family would get on board with my way, then we would be in a much better range.
I’ve lived in various sized towns and cities across the Midwest. When I lived in a tiny town, I planned my meals around when I could hit the Aldi next (45 min away) and stretched out how often I shopped. Now I live in a city, and I keep a list on my phone of the staples I buy and the cheapest store/price. Then, when I’m somewhere and see a sale I know if it’s actually a deal. I once saw someone post a Costco deals and every single thing they had up, while decent deals, a cheaper version was at Aldi.
I also understand doing this does take time. If you don’t have the time, try eMeals. They do all the prep recipes, shopping lists and you can send it right to grocery pickup of your choosing.

I buy very little at Trader Joe’s, mostly specialty items I can’t get elsewhere. Half their store is “healthy” junk food, half is healthier options, but it’s still junk food at the end of the day. I also don’t get sucked into 98% of their seasonal offerings.
I’m not a fan of Aldi. The produce goes bad for me really quick, and half the things I’ve tried I’m not a fan of the texture or flavor. I go browse occasionally, but I rarely buy anything.
I try to shop based on sales, but we do have a few splurge items because they’re so uncommon and seasonal. Will we pay $22 a pound for fiddleheads? Yes, those are only found in 1 store, not advertised as being in stock when they do come in, and are lovely to eat. But we don’t buy a whole pound, and only buy 2-3 times a year if we find them. We also buy a coffee that only seems to be sold in the same store, birthday, Father’s Day and Christmas tends to be when we splurge on that particular item.
I don’t “meal plan” per say, but I try to plan around what veg is on sale (or needs using ASAP) and what meat is already in the freezer. So I need to use up some broccoli and onions and I have flank steak in the freezer and a beef & broccoli seasoning pack (clearance for 49 cents- yes I can make my own sauce, but it’ll probably cost more than 49 cents), make some rice & I’ve got 2-3 days of food. Beyond that I’ve got no idea what I want to do, but I’ve got potatoes that need using, so I’ll probably do a chicken & potato thing. Next week salmon was requested, so I’ll go figure that out, I could do carrots and no idea what else with it. After that spaghetti might be useful to get some stuff out of the pantry, but we’ll see how the week shapes up.

I’m also trying to say with love that you have the time to do the shopping and gardening which many people do not. How much would you spend if you factored in the price of the case of built bars and they’re hello fresh box? I appreciate all your recipes and I really enjoy your family but I do feel and maybe you can understand from this point of you that some of us may feel a little bit deficient because we are not able to do these things. No one is sending me a free case of bars because I have 38 followers on my CZcams channel and I don’t have any friends I can recommend a hello fresh box to ..we’re all recommending them to each other. people say to you oh don’t pay any attention to the haters but maybe it’s better to understand a little bit that for many people what you’re doing is incredibly difficult if not impossible. My daughter lives with two small boys and her husband in Los Angeles they both work they don’t have a garden because they live in a rental and they don’t have time to spend their days off Taking their kids to the market. They are taking their boys to physical therapy and tutoring and their sports games and to birthday parties (before Covid of course) and trying to get them outside a little bit snd some enriching activities since They spent a year on zoom school
So I think it might be nice sometime if you planned a month of food or even a week and show what it would cost to live as a family that doesn’t have a freezer in the garage full of meat a garden full of produce and boxes of free stuff coming.

I'll add - while not having a giant extra freezer does limit what you can buy, it doesn't make it impossible to stock up. I live in an apartment with a roommate so I have to share our fridge/ freezer. I'm still able to stock up on good deals and fit it all in the freezer. You may have to clean out the freezer more often than Christine, but it's totally possible :) a little strategy goes a long way (taking 5 minutes every week to look at the sales, keeping a list of what's in your freezer/ pantry and making meals from that, etc). It does take more time than buying already prepped meals, but it takes less time than you'd think! I hope that is encouraging! I spend less than $100/ month on groceries (usually around $75) for myself, though I realize it would be a bit higher in LA.

@@wendoxia You have to adjust her amounts considering your cost of living area. I think the point is most people COULD spend less on groceries, they just don't want to sacrifice or get creative to do so. I don't consistently get amazing clearance deals, live near an outlet, garden, or get food sent to me and I only spend an avg. of $100/per person for groceries per month (with food allergies!) utilizing ibotta, coupons, promo codes, sales, and sometimes the Dollar Tree. I spent closer to $115/mo. when we lived in a smaller town with less options and more expensive groceries. I had to rely on online companies like Azure Standard, Healthy Traditions, Vitacost, Kroger, Walmart, and Amazon to get deals sometimes. I signed up for their mailing lists so I would know when sales/coupon codes were available.
I would batch cook things like baked oatmeal, cabbage, meatballs, muffins, waffles/pancakes, rice/quinoa, soup, chili, whole chickens, roasted veg (what ever was cheapest-even frozen), hard-boiled eggs, beans, tuna salad, and mason jar salads. With bread, pasta, tortillas, and condiments on hand we ate good for cheap-and it didn't take long, especially with an instant pot or crock pot! I am not so stringent now, but when our budget/time was tight, I would take an hour here and there to prepare multiple things so I could still have a life lol

I envy the prices & deals you guys get in the U.S. Here in Ontario, Canada, food prices are high & deals are few & far between.
Your ability to supplement with your own garden produce is a win! Well done! 👍🏼

Wow, Christine! What an amazing deal on the organic grass fed beef!! I'm jealous I don't have a Fred Meyer's near me. And, yes, hands down, Juanita's tortilla chips are the best 👍 Thanks for all your videos, and Happy Fall 🍁

I don't even want to admit what we spend on groceries a month for just the two of us, so I'm definitely reminded by your channel to strive to be frugal. I used to be much better at it, and I'm ashamed that I've gotten lazy. Thanks for the motivation!

I feel like less than 50 per person each month is phenomenal. I love your grocery haul and cooking videos!

Christine I really like that when you are presented with a challenge via the comments that you respond with a video to explain how you do it. This was a great video. Could you do more videos of your grocery hauls for an entire month? Also I think if you spent a "normal" amount for your family of six (like the $100/person method) it would be an interesting comparison.

Christine I love your videos!!! I was never into CZcams but you have made me obsessed 😆 lol.... but really, I was pretty frugal before but I've learned to shop differently (like you) and this month I did it under $500 (before for $650 to 700) for 5 people in my family and my kids can eat! Thank you! Keep making these great videos.
