I feel like Nightmare is a pretty good in-between (unless if you think that he is either cute or backrooms), but he is definitely the exception that proves the rule. I don't know what is up with the Kirby franchise, but it's got some spooky villains (although considering that it shares a universe with Metroid via Dreamland 3, that could have something to do with it, seeing as how even the Nightmare in Metroid is as wonky as it is).

I think a pretty good example of "in-between" is Magman from Kirby 64. From the cuteness perspective, it is just a lava blob with cute eyes and a funny mouth, plus it looks kinda dumb. I've got some idea's for a game of my own and I want to have a reeeeeally creepy part toward the end:
the game will have 6 secret bosses across the multiple areas, each giving you a "Nexus Core Fragment" and a hidden memory from the main villain from before he became evil. If you get all 6, you can proceed to the true "Daybringer" ending, where you fight a giant god demon. Before that part, you gotta go through this dingy, abandoned lab, where you meet a little alien called Detavoid that the former owners of the lab were experimenting on. He just stares at you before a little implant on his chest starts flashing and he transforms into a monster, with his legs turning into tentacles and tendrils growing out of its back. Once he turns, he stares at you a little longer before charging at you and the fight begins.
    Soooooo....what do ya think?

I’ve always loved these moments, mainly because they feel like they aren’t supposed to be there. It’s Nintendo, they’re a clean and squeaky company, so when you see something like giygas, you don’t know how to feel. It’s like a real life creepypasta. And it’s those moments that stick with you the most. I’ve never even played earthbound and I can instantly recognize giygas. Bosses like dead hand, giratina’s cutscene, and literally everything from wario world. It’s these moments that stick with you for years after you’ve played the game, because you’ve felt like you’ve killed a true monster, something that doesn’t belong in this bright and happy world. In most horror games, you’re expecting the fear and the uncertainty, but you never expect zero to rip his eye out just to continue fighting you. You never expect to see Luigi hanging in the back ground of the mansion. That’s true fear to me, seeing monsters where they shouldn’t be. There shouldn’t be a demon in your closet or under your bed, your room is supposed to be your safe place, the place you’re most vulnerable because you’re asleep. Seeing monsters when you feel safe, that’s horror to me
