- Enjoy these extended highlights of the 1988 Grand Final, uploaded in high-quality 50FPS. Melbourne were only the second side in history to qualify for the Grand Final from 5th position, and were desperate to make up for their heartbreaking preliminary final loss the previous year. Hawthorn meanwhile, under temporary coach Alan Joyce, had enjoyed a stellar year, and were at the peak of their powers. Even though this ended up being a lopsided Grand Final, there was still some tough and skillful football displayed throughout the match.

Good quality video. I was at this grand final. Some people said it was boring. As a Hawthorn supporter, i loved every minute.
Glad you enjoyed the video
So did I. It was beilliant.
This Hawthorn team must have been so disheartening to play against. Class on every line combined with relentless pressure.
Yes. And a lot of these guys played together for the best part of a decade, that’s why they contested 7 Grand Finals in the 80’s.
How good were we back then. So good to still watch this.
This team was incredible.
There were so many one-sided grand finals in this era, but at least this was one where you could admire the skill and obvious superiority of the winner. There have been grand finals decided by smaller margins where this didn't apply and the game truly was a snoozefest. I can't imagine many Hawthorn fans would prefer watching the 2013 DVD over this.
2013 sucked, I like to say all 3 of the three-peats were that way, but I say that as a Geelong supporter
@@gggumball🤣😂 I respect you because of our rivalry!
You are correct, mind you we've had two or three one sided grand finals in the past 3 years. You are right though with everything you said. I love a close game, it's what brings the most excitement to our lovely sport.
Does anyone else remember that at half time a live cross was taken of the 100 metre men's final at the Seoul Olympics ? That was the infamous one where Ben Johnson won gold but a few days later had it stripped because he tested positive to steroids. Good times.
No there wasn’t. It was in Channel 9
@@sliat1981 incorrect. Channel 9 has only once broadcast the Summer Olympics- London in 2012. It also did the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994.
@@johnclifford1537 maybe not 9 but it was not 7. I remember changing channels to watch the Olympics at half time, so you’re wrong
@@sliat1981 I am not wrong. They took a cross from an affiliate station.
@@johnclifford1537 yeah you are
Geez that Gary Lyon is true 'big game ' player. Should lead his team to a load of success. Ha!!
In the mid '80's, my wife taught at a Special School. One of her students was a keen Hawks fan & would often talk about Buckenara-this and Buckenara-that. One lunchtime, a hearing-impaired boy ran up to her saying "Mith, Mith....he'th thwearin'!" ;)
The last time dipper collected his medal on the podium. He missed out in 1989 and didn’t play in 1991
James Morrissey in the second quarter. Brilliant.
He was a favourite amongst real Hawks supporters. He did things others just couldn't see or, he knew when to double back as he'd assessed the contest being won a certain way downfield. 'The Freak' was so perfectly built for Aussie Rules too. Stamina to burn with skills unmatched. Any player who wears the 35 at the Hawks has a big reputation to live up to.
A lifetime Hawks fan born in '71, twelve flags (eleven I remember) makes being a StKilda, Footscray or Melbourne fan seem unimaginable. Not even 5 years per flag...
This one was special, not a great game like '89 or '08, but it was the only Granny I ever saw live. I still remember the roar of 100,000 people as the siren stated the game.
Nothin' like the footy.
GO HAWKS
it's easy if you try
1991-2008 was 17 years
@@sliat1981yeah...12 flags in 53 years averages less than 5 years per flag. Didn't you learn basic maths😂
@@craigschruhm2379 yeah won nothing from 1925-1961.
Demon only won one before hawks joined. They won 10 before hawks won any. So hawks just spread their shitness further apart. Still same level as success
12 flags in 60 years would be one every 5. I don't see the problem with my maths
I watched this live while in the US NAVY.
Umbrellas!
As a hawk fan i was celebrating after half time lol.🍻🍺🥂🍾🍷🍸🍹
8:36 the last time the game had any interest if you were a non-Hawthorn supporter
Until this only 8 different teams made the grand final since 1966
That’s right.

• 1968 🏆, 1969, 1970🏆, 1972🏆, 1973, 1979🏆, 1981🏆, 1982🏆, 1986, 1987🏆
Hawthorn = 9 GFs (5 flags)
• 1971🏆, 1975, 1976🏆, 1978🏆, 1983🏆, 1984, 1985, 1986🏆, 1987
Richmond = 7 GFs (5 flags)
• 1967🏆, 1969🏆, 1972, 1973🏆, 1974🏆, 1980🏆, 1982

Geelong = 1 GF (0 flags)
• 1967
Hawthorn domination.❤
That second quarter we could do no wrong.
I sold a melbourne fan a ticket to this game for a hefty sum!
Go hawks
Ironically this is the last time hawthorn beat Melbourne in the finals. They’ve played in 1990 and 2018 since with demons winning both times
We didn't lace up our boots in 2018. It was a shambles. A total embarrassment. At least in 1990 we had half a list out injured (two from the week earlier after playing the Dees in the final HA round). Minor injuries so if we'd have won against Melb in the Elimination Final, gotten back the injured boys, we'd have run the comp and won the flag. The Pies didn't want to face us. We had their measure and beat them easily in those days. We should've won 86,87,88,89,90,91 with this team....maybe more. I know....should've is a fantasy. Would've looked nice as a row of Weg posters though.
@@shannonpincombe8485 oh any excuses. What your one for the level of shitness since 2016.
Didnt Morrissey get called 'the freak' by his team mates?.
And you can see why clearly during this game. He saw things others only dreamt and made them happen with a punch on, deft touch, underground handball or slight kick. He was gold with brown stripes to hide the lustre. What a player!!
