  • Family Guy has gone down in quality over the years and has lost millions of viewers. What exactly is the reason for this and why does Fox refuse to let the show end?

+Egon Jensen-Peter got flushed down the crapper ever since season five, when he was diagnosed with being retarded. (Yeah, that's how the show went with it) which just meant it gave the show a free-pass for Peter to do whatever, wherever, whenever with no regard or concern to decency or human life. You can't get upset with Peter, he's just retarded. . .And things got FAR WORSE after that concerning Peter, where he casually murders people on a frequent basis, but season five was really the precipice that permanently broke him. I miss the days where Peter actually cared about being a good father. . .That he treated Meg with love and respect, even if she still was misunderstood. Peter was clueless and a bit of a dimwit but he always had a good heart and always tried to do the right thing. . .And I like how he always tried to be a good father because of how awful his father had been to him. . .(The show flushed that down too since Peter accidentally killed the man who was his adoptive father and it turns out his actual father is a drunken Irish lout, so. . .Peter gets off scott-free once again. . .) He didn't always succeed, but his heart was always in the right place. . .I also really miss the days where Stewie was a very fun, twisted little villain who only occasionally had a soft spot for maybe Brian in the family. . .Likely because while Brian did give him shit, Brian also respected him as an intelligent individual. Stewie was someone Brian recognized as evil and worthy of being considered a "frenemy." And Brian was so smart to where he was an individual Stewie at least respected for being smart and able to get somewhere close to Stewie's level. . .

The way they ruined Brian and Peter is what really killed the show for me. Peter used to care. Yes, he may have hurt his family sometimes but it was always a genuine mistake and he felt bad. Now he's just a dumb, inconsiderate asshole who uses Meg as a punching bag.
Brian was the perfect balance for Stewie. He really cared for him and tried to lead him along the right path. He would always do what he felt was the right thing and felt like he was a real part of the family. Now he's just an egotistical, moral lacking adulterer. His chemistry with characters like Meg doesn't really exist anymore.
They also turned side characters like Joe into stereotypes. He went from being a hard working man, who never let his disability get in the way, to a depressed wheelchair user, who's entire personality consists of him feeling sorry for himself and letting his disability hold him back.

@@JoseOrtiz-yn7zh Bit old, but I'd say your way off. Family Guy is more 'kid' orientated than the Simpsons honestly...
The Simpsons is more PG sure, but a lot of its early jokes (when it was good) were targeted more so at adults than children, and were pretty intelligently made. This is also reflected in the more character orientated comedy within the series. Still had a lot of jokes for kids, but it had a lot of depth too.
In contrast, Family Guy was and is primarily focused on a younger audience. Its largest audience is probably in the younger teens demographic, extending a bit before and after that. The fact that content isn't kid friendly doesn't stop it from being watched by kids, I've seen far more people under the age of 10 wearing Family Guy merch and talking about and referencing the show than those over the age of twenty, and the humour is pretty obvious, upfront and the opposite of intelligent I guess.
(Also it literally has nothing to do with the similarities in rate of decline)

Meg didn't really get abuse from her family, it was just that Peter couldn't connect with her like he could his sons (you know the whole father doesn't understand daughter trope). Lois was actually pretty good to Meg in the early seasons as she offered good advice (the episode where Peter pretends to be a high school student to get rid of "doing toad") and helped bring her out of her shell a bit (the Spring Break episode lol). But now, the jokes of present day Family Guy are long and drawn out so now if you don’t like a joke your forced to stew in it for its remainder which now is quite a long time. They could just keep all the characters the same and keep the plot and jokes the same but then people will complain it's repetitive. They can change it up a bit and give characters a bit of a new personality but again people will get upset or they can just end the show but again people will get upset so what can they do.

As time went on and Seth created other shows and did other projects, his and the others care for continuity, actual lessons and funny jokes slowly went out the window. They just don't care anymore. Long ago, before it became this long, it meant something. But, like with The Simpson's, they just stopped caring about putting out good quality stuff and just conformed to the way the world is now. They used give lessons on how drugs are bad, smoking is bad, how family matters, and things like that with funny but not too cruel humor mixed in. Now its gone to just Colder than below zero humor and almost nothing the original seasons had going on. The only thing keeping the show going is the adventures Stewie and Brian go on, because those atleast have something more to give than undeserving and unreasonably cruel jokes and humor. Things with Meg went completely out of control. In the first seasons, sure there was some jokes made about her but Peter, Lois and her brothers showed they still cared for her. Peter and Lois, even when they were mean, at the end of the day still remember shes their daughter and they loved her very much. Now shes nothing but a punching bag, something the show actually acknowledged in an episode, but instead of trying to fix it, they moral of the episode is 'get used to it'. Theres no love, no lessons, only a grain of funny jokes, and the creators don't give two shits. People think that the show should have stayed ended and that Seth was showing he agreed when he killed off Brian. There is no old fashion values, and there is no Family Guy.
Long ago, whenever I heard "Family Guy", I would think of funny-but not too cruel-humor, wholesomeness, and good life tips.
Now, whenever I hear it, I just think, "Oh, another Simpson's clone". Even though they were created to be different than them, they just became a carbon-copy clone of how The Simpson's is today.
And the thing that breaks my heart the most? I know that it will never be the same. With the way its going, not even the "Road To" series can save it anymore. The Family Guy we all know and love is gone, and all thats left is this shambling Zombie corpse.
    First was Zombie Simpson's
Now we have Zombie Family Guy

The writers have tried WAY too hard to be serious and profound and have written some really baffling episodes. Meg finally stands up to her abusive family but stays because "its her lot in life to feel bad so they don't have to."

Or the episode where we meet Quagmire's Sister and her abusive boyfriend? They tried to make it a little more serious in tone but failed miserably though my main gripe with that episode is how they portrayed her boyfriend. He would physically assault her out in public or around Peter and the gang and no one didn't even call it out. It just was too much lol
And yeah Brian's character was definitely brought down from likable and the only time his pretentiousness is bearable is when he's with Stewie because Stewie plays off of him and calls him out in humorous ways.

Peter is so stupid he ruins every attempt to get a thanksgiving turkey. To the point Brian snaps because Peter doesn't know how a Prius works, and he smashes it. The writers don't allow Chris' character to mature and development, even when Stewie tries to help him make a Thanksgiving speech. Brian griffin over and over tries to be the voice of reason to Peter, but every time he speaks it goes in one ear and out the other. The whole episode makes me cringe and shows how bad the characters of fallen since the start of the first season.

Also the way the animation was kind of fuzzy and a little plain and sloppy. It made it feel homemade, and comfortable. Like Seth made it himself just for you to enjoy in your living room. I also miss when Joe was like this awesome character, and he could do all these awesome things like fight crime and save lives, but he didnt let his wheel chair slow him down. Now hes like a pathetic man baby, and it upsets me a lot. Also when Peter was relatable, even when I was a kid I found him relatable. He was kind of childish but like not to the point where it was annoying. Like the one scene where peter made a draw bridge, and lois came back from shopping and he wouldnt open the draw bridge, but then she said "I have Garfield a tale of two kitties" and he opened the drawn bridge. I thought that was funny, and I loved it! But now peter is like a disgusting asshole piece of shit, and I hate how the show is too worried about what's happening in the world right now. Back in the day they just wrote episodes about their characters, now it's like "transgender people are becoming more open and prominant, let's write a whole episode where peter gets an accidental sex change and has to live as a woman!!!!!!" Like shut up. Thats not a good episode. I want more episodes like Road to Rhode Island/Road to Rupert. Episodes where the characters adventure out somewhere together and have to experience some kind of hardship/struggle, and then you're refreshed at the end of the episode when the issue is resolved/they finally get back home.

Honestly I wonder if all the violence and stupid jokes is Seth's way of trying to see how far he can go before the show gets canceled for good. He's already said he's tired of the show and that it had run it's course. I believe it got canceled twice before and the people kept bringing it back. So like I said I think Seth may be trying to make it as horrible as he can to push the network and fans into wanting it canceled so he doesn't have to do it anymore and so he can focus on other projects. He did amazing with the Orville. I'm sure he wants to do more stuff like that without family guy getting in the way.

I don’t have a problem with edgy jokes or dark humour but family guy doesn’t have anything interesting or funny to say anymore, it’s just controversial jokes for the sake of it, it’s not intelligent or well written it’s just cheap shots at the disabled and women (for the most part). It's not just Family Guy that's suffering from this either. It's sad to see the things we once love die, but honestly i think it's better to have them die being good then watch them slowly grind to an ungraceful halt.

For me, it was the abuse Meg went through that caused me to stop watching it. When I rewatched the first few seasons, I realized they've always made fun of Meg. For example, in the song "This House is Freakin' Sweet", one of the lyrics goes "We'll do the best we can with Meg" and that was funny! But as the show progressed, her treatment was worsened. I'm not saying that they can't make fun of her at all, but a line has been crossed. Another reason was Peter. As you mentioned. he went from a lovable doofus to a complete asshole. He used to do the best he could to provide for his family and now? It's just sickening to watch. I haven't watched the show in years so I had no clue how bad the other characters got. I'll gladly watch their older episodes. But I'll pass on the recent ones.

@@NavySharkz The genre is "family" I would say. and personally, I find the show to be funny, as do many. check the rotten tomatoes rating against family guy. look at a video on CZcams where bobs burgers family appeared on family guy. that comment section is 90% Bob's is better than family guy. Family guy goes for shock value type humor. ya know... cussing... nudity, sexual, and otherwise unrealistic situations
      rant incoming::::
so I came across this article and got so happy that others see it the way I do.
I truthfully feel like shows like family guy and the Simpson have normalized the idea that an animated family has to have a fat stupid husband and "sexy" wife with bad kids in order tom be the family dynamic that creates "humor"
of course with family guy taking it a step further with complete absurdity and nonsense in spades. (which works well don't get me wrong) and so I think that's why people ignore this show so much.
it's not a tone of cussing. it's all realistic things that can happen. no one gets shot in one scene and cool in the next.
no talking babies building time machines. no aliens in wigs. no intergalactic scifi hoopla.
these outlandish ideas are just what people have come to expect from adult animation and because bob's burgers has literally none of that, it's written off as boring. but they can't help it. this is what it takes to entertain now because that's what we have been fed. Its... the norm, so to speak.
just a normal family doing normal things... loving each other. WITH conflict and still being an all around good family with good people and a wife and husband that actually fit together and still can make me laugh. Which I could easily send u good examples.
even the school environment is normal. no "school bully" tropes because that shit just isnt real anymore.
there is a mean girl or 2 but it's not even that over the top stuff like usual.
Bob's is the best at creating real human beings. nothing compares to it. that's all i have to say.

My main issue with Family Guy is just its overall repetition, particularly when it comes to episodes that center around Peter and his relationships with his friends and family. The formula going like this, at the start Peter is being selfish, headstrong, arrogant or just genuinely irresponsible, midway this causes a disfunction in his personal relationships and by the end he accepts responsibility for his wrong doings. This wouldn't ordinarily be an issue, if any of Peter's growth actually stuck, but it doesn't, by the start of the next episode, Peter is as obnoxious and irresponsible as he was previously, which is odd given that, at least at the start, Peter may have been a moron, but he was a good person who did value his friends and family. Now he's just a cruel self-serving twit who cares more about his own entertainment and thrill seaking than the well-being of those immediately impactful on his life.
This is seen no better in the episode where a heavy rainfall causes the Griffens to remain inside, where Meg finally stands up for herself and points out how cruel her family treats her, yet by the end, they all revert to deciding to treat Meg like a doormat so that they don't have to actually deal with their issues like responsible people, yes it's a comedy show, but that doesn't mean these characters should be as despicable as possible. Having said that I am a huge South Park fan, thanks to Eric Cartman, however the difference is that South Park reinforces how terrible of a person Cartman is than doing some half-assed attempt at making him a good person, with few acceptions, but still Cartman isn't meant to become a better person, he's a narcissistic pschyo who takes glee in making others suffer and he's sees nothing wrong with his behaviour, the same mostly applies to Peter, except the show continuously tries to make Peter "good" only for him to throw away any wisdom his has gained by the next episode
