2022 Subaru WRX GT Review - Walk Around and Test Drive

  • The 2022 Subaru WRX GT is an all new trim for this legendary sports sedan, but there is a catch. No 6-speed manual transmission. In a market where you either need a manual or a competent automatic, Subaru has revamped their CVT or "Subaru Performance Transmission" to give buyers an alternative to the VW GTI and Hyundai Veloster N. With features like active dampers and Recaro seats, the 2022 Subaru WRX GT is here to possibly change the game, and provide an experience that enthusiasts will love!
Huge thank you to Subaru of Wakefield for letting me stop by to film this 2022 Subaru WRX!

I’ve owned some nice cars in the past (2014 Chevy SS, 2019 civic si, 2020 Genesis g70 3.3t awd), this is hands down my favorite. I’m so impressed at the connected feeling I get from this car. I plan on driving this for a few years and I’ll probably end up getting another when the recaros and adaptive suspension make their way to the 6mt. At 54yo, the 6mt gives me what was always missing in my fancier more powerful automatic sedans, connectedness. It’s a shame this GT trim wasn’t offered on manual right off the bat.

Thank you for doing this review! I finally got my World Rally Blue GT a week ago, and exactly how I ordered it in back in early April, minus the Illuminated Footwell lighting and STI shift knob. Both parts are on back order with estimated delivery in late August/ early September. Both are easy to install myself when that happens.
The GT is well worth the wait and price for me. It replaced a 2018 Limited CVT.
I love this car! It is a comfortable daily driver that I leave in normal mode on the freeway (Comfort Mode is too cushy in all aspects and puts the A/C in an economy type mode with a gentle setting that suppresses drying....smells different in a way, if that makes sense.) I'm still testing things out to find my true "individual" mode. Getting all the car, eyesight and infotainment system settings done took a while. I love the large screen, but there are certain radio settings that have been easier in my past WRX and Outbacks to set up (the Smart Favorite presets were more of a hassle for me)
I know that the haters eventually will come around, as they always have with each generation change. I wasn't a fan of all the black cladding, but when you see it in person, it grows on you. Plus there are now places that will color match your wheel arches for you.....pull them off and ship them.

I was going to make one since I couldn't find any on GT and I have mine for a week now, but decided to leave this to those who do this for a living. I traded my 2015 CVT for Magnetite GT. Honestly, I can't tell the difference in suspension between Comfort or Normal. The paddle shifter clicks are sort of shorter than before and I wish they would keep the 6-speed option simulation. The new transmission in manual mode is now 8-speed throughout all modes and I find myself not using it as much as I was with 2015 model. Overall, this model is basically CUV for those who don't like truck height.

It seems to shift smoothly in normal and comfort modes. I have a 2021 Legacy XT with the 2.4 turbo and the power delivery is oftentimes not smooth at all. Its like the fairly powerful engine and the regular Subaru CVT just don't know what to do together. Hunts back and forth at a mid throttle situation and occasional shifts hard. The only time I can drive it "butter smooth" is when I'm really feather-footing it. Now if I put it in manual and shift myself its fine, but I don't want to do that all the time.

SUBARU is targeting younger buyers with this model. I don't know to many young people who can afford a $42,000 vehicle. Besides that my 20 year old son bought a 2017 WRX last year and he loves his car. Me and him both agree that it is a ugly car and I'm 55
