Ok folks, Iâve had a LOT of people ask why Iâm using a mannequin with âthickâ hair in this video and not a live model with actual thin hair. This video was filmed in the middle of the original pandemic lockdown. Iâm sure you can understand why I couldnât use a live model. Mannequin heads donât come in thin textures.
Thank you so much for this video! What you said is spot-on, especially about only using texturizing scissors on the very ends. My guy (hair stylist) had to move away and he was the only one that ever cut my fine, thinning hair well. The first gal I tried after he left used DEEP point cutting on my hair and it looked horrible! It didn't lay right when it was straight, and I couldn't curl it without it looking like it had these strange twisting "hair fingers" for lack of a better term! It completely killed my confidence in myself. I never went back and I'm on my third hairdresser in two years trying to explain what I would like them to do, so I really appreciate this! Do you have any videos on how to cut thin, fine hair that is somewhere between collarbone length to just past the shoulders where you show how to actually cut the layers properly to give a little volume on top? I have an appt coming up and I would love to be able to show her what to do to achieve what I want because we can't quite get it right. I've shown her pictures, but that doesn't explain the technique. Thank you for all your efforts in helping us!
learned lot thanks

Help I have fine hair on the top and sides that look to me dry. Please help
Thanks for tihs!! However I have thin, fine hair .... and it naturally falls in the middle no matter HOW hard, or for how many Years I've tried to train it to go one side or the other, How to stop it falling into a natural middle parting? I actually got my hairdresser to put 'bangs' in my hair ... (we call it a 'fringe' here in Oz) ... & that one thing helps to make my hair, or me .... appear more youthful, but at almost 70 ... I need more help than a fringe! I see a lot of 'old' women out there who go shorter as they age, but it seems to make them appear more masculine .. Any suggestions as to why this is?
You REALLY know fine hair. The problem is, not many stylists are educated about how to work with it. Even though I gave up on finding a stylist many many years ago (and I cut my own hair), I will try some of your tips. Thank you for the great advice and your excellent videos.
Thank you! Iâm stoked I could help! Canât wait to hear how it turns out!
I wish I could learn to cut my own people donât know how to cut fine thin hair.
I love your videos.
I find most hairdressers still cut hair as if working on the doll, they got no confidence to trust their own eyes.never been to a dresser who got it.i like the idea Vidal sassoon had to cut the hair so that when you just shake it it falls naturally into it's own cut, to the shape of the individuals face shape
But itâs not just about thin and fine, mine is also so straight it shows layers like steps and wonât hold any bend. No hairdresser has been able to create a style on my hair so I have to keep it one mid/long length.
Funny, just last week I chopped 4 inches off my long, fine hair. Using thinning shears on the very tips is a great idea! There's so much support out there for "Curly Girls" with their own Curly-specialist-stylists; I say now is the time for "Fine Girls" to get the support we need, too! â€â
Or better thin haired curly girls like me! Haha
@@kaamkic me too, fine and thinning and wavy
Every time you find a good product they discontinue it! Never fails!!!!!!
Tell me about it! Drives me insane!
Preach! Happens with lipstick, perfume, nail polish and so on.
Haircolor too!
So true!
Omg yes.!
THANK YOU Justin for giving us ALL the information about hair! I've been isolated for two years caring for my parents, and you've provided SO many ideas to maximize and have fun with my hair! Thank you for making life better! đ
Now that I've discovered your channel, I feel I don't need to watch any other for great hair tips. I look forward to watching (and loving) each new weekly release.
I learned the hard way about fine hair and too much layering in the late 70's, and have been super cautious ever since. These are great tips!
You and my morning cup of coffee! Perfect start to rolling into Sunday. Me - fine hair all my life. Quite a journey. Perms, short, long, good haircuts, bad haircuts...layering ahhhh.. You I trust!
It was literally like you were talking to me! Thank you for both your videos on fine thin hair! They both made so much sense to me. Congratulations Justin on your channel continuing to grow.
Thank you Shelley! Iâm really glad I could help a bit! Thanks for checking out those videos....the support means a lot!
I learned alot about making my hair look thicker. Thank you. The problem is finding a hair dresser that knows these tricks.
You be on a eternal quest.id say go to salon get your hair done. Then go home and put the few layers in yourself
Thank you for your tips. I have thin fine hair and I have always love an A line cut. Watching your videos have convinced me to go back to my favorite cut. Thank you!â€
I love your tips. Ty so much. Thirty-four-year-old with hormonal hair loss. Toppers & wigs are too heavy for the amount of loss that I have but having nothing makes me look bald.... This really helped because I've been growing up my hair and it's about Midway down my back but it just looks so scraggly.., I thought having more hair would make it look better but your tips just made me realize what I need to do. Thank you so much.. you definitely earned my subscription
I'm a Newbie, and I'm in love with Justin. You have answered so many of my questions in these tutorials. You are totally AWESOME and Thank you for your dedication. I'm a subscriber âșïž

I don't know thing one about styling hair....looking forward to learning how to make my fine hair look thicker and fuller. Thank you for making these videos đ
Your explanation of texturizing makes so much sense now!! Your videos are very good, thank you!
Excellent! Fine hair women everywhere are thanking from the bottom of their hearts. I will definitely recommend your channel when given the opportunity.
Thank you! I really appreciate that support. It means a ton to me.
Hi Justin, this is by far one of your videos II found directly applicable to me. Your advice on layers and especially on texturizing is incredibly useful and is information that even as a layperson I think I could convey to my stylist. I'm still amazed at how you're able to style the mannequins hair so that it looks great regardless of which side you part her hair on. As for names, I was thinking of Just In Style (thank you Mumma Kels). Hickox & Family also rings true to me since your community has become a family to you, and to each other. Stay well and safe dear man and thank you again for all you do for us. - Judy
Thank you! Trust me....these over sized doll heads are NOT my favorite to work on, BUT, they serve the purpose and theyâre always able to film when I need to! Lmao! Glad this video helped and I definitely agree about the family!
Thank you, Justin for taking the time to explain what a person with fine thin hair should and should not do with there hair!! I really appreciate your explanation of how to use product on your hair and not to overdo it.
That ends-only texturizing is amazing. My new hairdresser scared me when she aggressively texturized the ends of my fine hair but it now has volume that it didnât have before.
Thank you so much for this video! My hair is fine AND thin. One of my biggest challenges is finding products that are light enough and actually make my hair fuller. However, I don't own a flat iron. I use a round brush when I blow dry. It looks from your videos that I need one, but it cannot be expensive. I'm going to check out your favorite. Thank you for linking your products below. Very, very helpful.
Thanks so much, Justin. Your instructive videos are the best I've seen. Thanks for addressing the problem I've had with my hair for 40 years.
Thank you!!! Thatâs way too nice of you to say. I appreciate the support for sure. Iâm glad I could help.
Your ability to teach is magnificent. Your verbal descriptions in concert with your brilliant camera technique is soooo great!!!!
Youâre way too kind. Thank you so much for the support. I really do appreciate it!
Subscribed from the first video I watched. I have a great stylist! She does it just like you were saying to. I have thin, fine blonde, now graying hair. She is a genius!
Thank you so much! Welcome to the family. I truly appreciate the support. Glad you have such an awesome stylist! Thereâs a ton of amazing ones out there for sure.
Youâre so wonderful at explaining everything! Thank you!
Thank you for all the tips. I just wish you could be my hair stylist.
Each time I use your DeFrizz product (4th time now) Iâm getting better and better results. Todays was perfect. Iâve learned that some products fail due to operator error. You really did make a great product đ. My hair is thin and fine so I had to learn the amount (little) and application (spray it into my hands and apply) love it. Thank you for rescuing my hair. Best ever. Never seen better!
You are much more than a hairdresser. You are so kind.
I truly enjoyed your video. I actually have alopecia so I have fine and thin hair. I had a stylist tell me I needed layering so I went for it and I cried it was so bad. Looked like my hair was wacked and now I know why. I loved seeing you style the hair and it made so much sense and looked so nice. I am so afraid to let someone try again. Looks like if someone did it right it would more than likely help me. How do you find someone who really knows how to cut fine hair. So hard!
I LOVE all this information!!! I have fine hair (but a lot of it) and Iâm 66 years old, but donât look it or feel it. I have always been interested in the fabulous world of hair! I am very thankful to have found this channel. The best way to describe my hair right now is a long pixie, and I donât EVER want to be caught with âgrandma hairâ!! I love the edgier hairstyles. Thank you for all your styling tips and tricks I will be putting them to good use! đ
Whatâs a long pixie
I agree with you I will never have grandma hair (short and gray).
Thank you! I just used the technique you showed to blend blunt ends on my side swept bangsâŠ.worked perfectly
I'm so happy I discovered this channel. I learned that my hairdresser cuts my hair the right way!
Great video. I have thin, fine hair that is COVID long because I haven't cut it since the pandemic began. It's definitely patchy at the ends. On top of this, I've been afraid to get layers for years b/c of a really bad experience. Very helpful. New subscriber.
Justin, your instruction about texturizing is the very best I have ever been exposed to!!! I am 81 with very short, fine wavy hair that is thinner (of course!) than it used to be. Like you said, I have had extremely bad experiences with stylists who "thinned" my hair and ruined it. It took forever for it to grow out to the point where I could do anything with it. Therefore, I do not allow anyone to touch my hair with a "thinning" scissor. I truly wish I could have you cut my hair b/c I would totally trust you to do it right. :) B/c I have such bad haircuts from the salons, I now cut my own hair (shudder!), but do as good a job as most of them do. I have learned so much from your teaching and knowledge, so THANK YOU for sharing as you do! You are one in a million.
Thank you so much!!!! I feel honored that youâd put that much trust in me! I really appreciate your support and that feedback made my day! Stay safe and weâll!

Hey Justin, I just discovered you recently and I really appreciate, like so many others, how very well you explain things. Not in "salon specialist speak" but everyday terms so I can create the tips and find the products myself. Thanks!

I just found you Justin! Came guy what great techniques you gave for thinning hair.I am 64 and my hair started thinning in my early 60. So many bad h/c since then. My hair doesn't hold curl and very limp! This was awesome on the texturizing!!! Can't wait to try on my hair. When we can all get out to the salon I will show this video to my hairdresser. She will love seeing this. We are both hairdressers from the early 70. I don't cut no more because of arthritis. I wish I was taught this different things when I was a cosmotologists. This will be a fun day for us to experiment on my hair. After all it can't get worse( I don't think!!!). It's just hair that will grow back( I hope!). đ. I wish I was near you so I could have you cut mine. Tired of paying $70 just for a cut and it be bad. Thanks again for the knowledge. Stay safe and healthy.

I finally got a new haircut after losing half of my hair due to covid and the shedding stopped after 6 months.
I was so sad but my hairdresser gave me the first hairdo. Feeling good again and learning how to maintain it till my beautifull is back again.
Some of you are real therapists! đ
Wow, I really enjoyed this demonstration and it taught me a lot about getting volume in my super thin hair. It would be ideal if I could find a stylist who knows what they are doing! I think that I can cut my own hair and it would be a better or at least close by the way it is being cut now. Another issue is that it's impossible too find a REAL STYLIST! I will be turning 69 years young tomorrow and only one time in my life have I actually had my hair done by a person who didn't ask me what kind of hair cut did I want. Instead he educated me in what would look good on me and help improve the volume of my hair. Unfortunately he moved to New York. So sorry I didn't mean to write a book but maybe you could touch on the subject of trying too find a good hair stylist. Any chance you might pass through Ogden Utah? lol. I đđ
Hey, thank you so much. I truly appreciate that and Iâm super glad that I can help! I actually did create a video about how to find a new stylist. Iâm not sure if youâve had a chance to see it yet? If you look through my videos I think you should be able to find it pretty easily and I really think youâll like it! Looking forward to hearing what you think. Thanks again for the support.
Exactly my own experience! Last time I got a haircut, I was embarrassed to be seen walking to my car.
Dang you really know your stuff! Super helpful! I've had fine thin hair my whole life and have always had problems styling it. My hair currently looks like the mannequin before you did anything since I haven't had a cut in over a year and have been really wanting to go get one (or even doing a simple trim myself) lately because the ends are all uneven. I was surprised that layering can actually help thin hair too! I had a bad experience with it once and so I don't want to do layers again unless maybe you're doing my hair haha! But I've always been one to just want it to feel denser since i pull my hair back a lot. I'm definitely keeping your tips in mind, but if I were to try and trim my own hair, any suggestions? Thank you so much!!
I literally just watched this video and had a go on my hair before the vid even finished.really pleased with the look.hardly noticeable it even got slight layers in it.im well chuffed.

My first time watching the videos and listening to your instructions with fine hair. I loved it. Thanks for the tips.
Youâre so welcome! Glad they helped!
Would you do a video and explain exactly what undercut is? I've had it done and that seems to work best for me but I've moved to another state and I'm unable to find someone who understands what I'm saying. The three most difficult things to find are a good doctor, a good dentist, and a great hair stylist. I absolutely hate the searching process!! Thank you so much and I love your videos!!
I absolutely understand what you mean! Iâll definitely consider doing a video on that in the future. Thanks for that suggestion. In the meantime have you had a chance to watch my video about how to find a new hairstylist? It may have some insight that could help you.

I have fine hair that due to a recent extremely stressful event has started to fall out. I really appreciate these videos about the best cuts and styling techniques to help with this issue now. Iâm taking biotin and using a biotin stay in conditioner to hopefully remedy the situation! Soon!
I feel so seen! Thank you for this short and informative video đđŒ
I have curly hair, yet very thin and coarse at the same time, and hair stylists always tell me that I shouldn't get layers because it makes my hair look thinner. But in my experience, whenever I heed that advice, I hate how I look because I end up with a chunk of big hair that looks hideous, especially at the ends. To some people, blunt cuts look chic and sleek but for my naturally curly (and unruly) hair, they just look and feel ugly.
P.S.
I'm excited to try those products you used! I just hope my hair will like them and not retaliate with even more frizz đ
I have fine, thinner hair and love long straight hair so I wear extensions. Without them, my hair looks much like the first mannequin. I keep it that length so the extensions blend well. But, Certainly can not go without them. I have found that doing the "sandwich method" is a bit too heavy and tends to break my hair. Trying the single weft method today. Can you do a video on extensions for fine hair along with any tips and tricks to making it look its best. Cut, style, products etc.. ?
Great question Laurie! I am definitely going to be doing a few videos on extensions. Thanks for the feedback!
That would help me as well. My hair is darker and longer now. Not sure if I want extensions. Seems like alot of maintenance but do I have the patience to keep growing my hair? Prob not.
Extensions ruined my hair. It's been years and I have not regained the hair that I lost.
They also ruined my hair
In the past (before I grew out my layers, and grew the length of my fine hair), extensions worked so well on my hair. Zero damage when the extensions were taken out. Maybe the damage depends on the manner in which the extensions are put in, and the manner in which theyâre removed, and how you take care of your hair when the extensions are in? I had an âextension specialistâ who gave me specific instructions, which I followed to the T. Or maybe I was just fortunate , not sure .
OMG, thank you for saying that you can STILL layer hair. I'm a child of the 80's, so BIG hair. I don't want my hair straight and limp, and all one length. I want my hair to have volume and movement, but my hair is fine and not so thick. It's wavy, but not curly. So it's alot of so-so. :( But every time I ask a stylist to layer my hair they look at me like I'm nuts.
Absolutely you can layer it. In fact I think it something that is almost necessary in many cases. Iâm glad this helped. Thanks for checking out the video!
Lol. I too am an 80âs child and I agree, I just canât pull off the pin straight, no layered look at all... I still love the layered big volume look!
Great! Thank you for video! First haircut looks perfect)
You achieved amazing volume! Wow!
More on camouflaging thinning hair? Thanks so much!
Thank you. Great topic idea!
I'd like to second this suggestion. Have been dealing with thinning on top and have gotten differing opinions from stylists about coloring my hair to camouflage. One told me I needed blonde highlights, a few years (and many highlights later) the other told me I need to darken near the roots. Didn't notice either method helping much, so now I'm letting my hair go back to natural strawberry blonde. I have been taking 10 mg biotin supplements and drinking collagen in my coffee for a few years and that seems to have helped me most - hair grows faster anyway...
Would love to hear methods to make the top appear thicker. Thanks!
DJ BOSNICK agreed. The internet is confusing. :(
How to camouflage thinning hair in front (starting to see more forehead) without incorporating bangs would be great!
Thank you for sharing đ
You should avoid dark backgrounds including T-shirts when teaching by video, the subject matter fades into the background making it impossible to see whats happening. Love your videos!
I really needed this info as I'm heading off to get my longish, thinish, silver-grey hair cut today, so great tips. Now I have one for you...when working with a dark 'model head' of hair, maybe you can try to wear a light shirt. A lot is lost from the viewer POV when the darkness of the hair blends right into the darkness of the shirt. Thanks again!
Your videos are incredible informative and you get to the point. Thank you for what you do!
I NEED you to cut and color my hair! Iâve never had a stylist as knowledgeable. Iâm even more hesitant after watching this video as Iâm currently trying to find a new stylist. What should I say to the stylist when they ask what I want done so I get my points across which are the things you covered in this video? Iâve tried explaining to stylists that they have to be very careful and know what theyâre doing when trimming my hair ESPECIALLY near my ears as the hair doesnât grow well there and looks very string and thin if not cut correctly. Only one stylist has ever understood and trimmed my hair correctly around my ears and it took years for the stylist to figure out how to make it look not stringy and thin.
I love this video. I have fairly long, fine hair. I do pull it back in a ponytail often on casual days. I know you mentioned this cut looks fuller but doesn't feel fuller if your hair is pulled back. Any tips on how to have the ponytail not look flimsy, which has been the case for me when I have gotten a layered cut similar to this?
THAT is a great question. Have you tried to double the end of the ponytail back up through the hair tie? It will look a bt more like a bun kind of but will make it appear fuller.
You could put some sort of hair piece clip in it. I have been thinking of maybe doing this.
What volumeizer would you suggest now? Iâm assuming Phat Hair has been discounted, I canât find it anywhere. Thank you!!
Wow love those steps.. its encouraging me to layering and texturizing my hair
Just subscribed after looking at hair toppers and volumizing extensions for 3 months! I used to avoid hair stylists... And I am going to avoid them again. Thank youđ
Can you do a video showing how you layer the top portion , leaving length dense looking
Thanks for the feedback! Iâm definitely considering doing some videos like that. I think they would be good for clients as well as for stylists.
