  • Have you had trouble layering blondes, or fine haired guests? You go through the cut, and all the work to find that line after line is visible in your cut?! Sam Villa Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken demonstrates how to create volume and movement in this hair type and color. He also explains why it is necessary to do a dry cut for this hair type, and how to get the best results blending while preserving the perimeter. And the best part is that your clients can still get this in a ponytail like they want!!

    The problem is for us clients! It’s so difficult to find a stylist that can do this! Plus, with thin blonde hair that grows slowly, I don’t have the luxury for mistakes or a bad cut😪. Always come out disappointed when I know I can get volume into my hair but the stylist tells me it’s not possible because my hair is thin! Thank you for validating what I know about my own hair.

      @ravenfeathesDVM Před 4 lety +8

      Michelle, It IS possible. I found a trick that I’ve been using for years now and it works! I don’t even want to THINK about how much money I’ve spent on root lifters, thickening hair products, etc. Ahhh. My hair is super baby fine and as I age, getting a little thinner. You’ll need a blunt cut, not layered. Never let a stylist layer fine, thin hair. They should know better. I let someone cut my hair several years ago and I’ve NEVER let stylist come close to me with scissors again. I invested in a very expensive pair of shears ($475.00) which is a must, and I have my daughter cut the back in a blunt fashion, then I do the sides. Anyway, here’s the trick. . . After you wash your hair while it’s still wet, mix about a quarter size or less of gel with water in your palm, then rub together, (I use Joico extra firm), but any strong hold gel will work) then rub it on your roots or wherever you need volume. Blow dry and style as you usually do. I promise this will work. If it works on my hair, it’ll work for you. Joico has a huge bottle that I bought around 5 years ago and I still have half of the bottle left. It’s not that expensive so I’d try that first. Good luck sweetie. 💕

      @@ravenfeathesDVM Aw!!!! Thank you so much! I will definitely give it a try! BTW, I agree with you on not allowing anyone to layer thin fine hair! That has always been a policy of mine, as well! I also learned that costly mistake the hard way!

    Your instruction is by far the best of all the hair cutting videos I've watched, especially for fine hair and volume at the crown. I'm only watching this for DIY purposes so I have to adapt a lot of how you hold and angle the hair to do on myself, but the way you explain the mechanics has really helped me up my game on my long, blonde, fine hair. No mullets, no chop lines, no drag.

    With COVID and law school, it's been hard to get hair appointments that fit my schedule. My very fine hair was just hanging there doing nothing. Worse, it had some leftover perm and highlights so lifeless on top, fuzzy from the ears down. Just aweful! I watched this video and decided to try this technique on my own. I went very slow and watched each step, arm positioning, etc. I held my breath taking the clips out wondering if I had really messed up. Nope! My hair looks the best it has in months! Not perfect, but the fact that I used regular household scissors, have no training as a stylist and it still turned out well, really says a lot about how GREAT this technique is. Thank you, Sam, aka lifesaver!!!

    I’m going to say the EXACT SAME THING that I’ve seen others below say, “NO ONE CAN DO THIS!!” They end up putting freaking layers in my hair. Years and many moons ago my favorite hair dresser would put in the volume and cut my dang hair almost entirely with a razor. To top it off, she could have done it blindfolded. Oh how I miss her!! I followed her around for years by driving anywhere from 2 to 4 hours because we both moved around a bit. I absolutely adored her. She was destined for greatness and I guess when Hollywood came calling, she moved on. I’m so proud for her but miss her dearly. Check her bio or IMBD out sometime.....Adruitha Lee

    Sam do you know anyone in Central Mexico that is trained in dry cutting? Specifically fine, blonde, mid length-long hair; I have a colic at certain lengths and an underside that is naturally very curly; the top no longer curls due to prior processing. My hair if not cut above or below a natural S wave that will flip if the top hair is not longer and heavier is a mess. I need to go shorter or longer than the colic are no amount of product keeps the hair from flipping especially if blunt cut without an undercut angle. Have a recommendation for post Covid-19...I am in Guanajuato State. Or have a suggestion of how I explain to a a well trained Hair Colorist and Stylist?

    How can we find a Sam Villa trained stylist?

      We would recommend that you locate a Redken Artist in your area. Most Redken Artists have attended extensive training with Sam Villa himself or with the techniques that Sam uses. They are highly skilled and they will be able to help with your hair / any hair challenges!
      You can use the link below to locate a Redken Stylist or a Redken Elite Salon in your area!

    I know he is the expert, BUT.
    ... cutting hair vertically and "slicing" only thins-out hair more. Conversely leaving bulk and cutting horizontally is what gives thin hair volume.
