- A friend's LED lights went out and he asked me to see if I could I fix it for him. I thought it a good opportunity to make a video about opening the controller, fixing the LED light and securing the ferrite ring.

One of these days we are going to get you an actual workbench for onewheel workbench
The Float Life haha. I work better on the floor
When removing the cover from the housing, it is very easy to stress the solder connection between the pins of the two round connectors and the small vertical printed circuit boards, PCB, that interface them to the main board. This stress can actually create a break in the trace of the small PCB. Your Onewheel will not function and you will need to disassemble the whole thing all over again. If you or a friend have skill working with PCB's, I recommend making wire connections between the pins of the connector and the main board. This will give assurance that your board will work when you assemble it and that these very important connections don't fail as you ride. The small PCB should have been, in my opinion, a two sided board with plated through holes for better reliability.
Dude thanks a lot for taking the trouble to make this vid. I fixed my headlights myself today thanks to this!
That was an awesome, fascinating and detailed video. My onewheel is brand new, I just watched because it was interesting and I'm a tech head haha!
It drove me a tiny bit crazy at one point when you kept trying to balance the ferrite wire cluster on the scissors handle and it fell over. Again and again and again and I helpfully yelled out at you PROP IT UP WITH THAT BIG GRIPPY SPRING CLAMP SITTING 2 INCHES AWAY!
Haha! But seriously, good job. Thanks for making this.
Haha that would have been better ;)
thanks for this video, probably saved my controller!
I couldn't get it opened until I saw this video and the use of a hairdryer :) cheers
Awesome video! My XR LED headlights stopped working a few days ago. 1,333 trouble free miles so far. This is the 1st problem with the board. I ride it mostly off-road. This winter, I'll open it up and fix it and glue things down. Thanks!
I'm at 1200 miles doing the first tire change lights are gone though flickering in the front
@@Therealphantomzero Cool. I still haven't gotten around to fixing my lights, but still ride as often as I can. Enjoy your rides!
Thank you so much for a great video tutorial. FM should just hire you. :)
Thanks for taking the time to make this video
Thanks for taking the time to share the appreciation :)
crazy that this is that ferrite ring problem lol FM couldnt just do that for us????? lol. Well now I have this info I will fix it when I start badgering soonish.
I had to fix this part. Thank you so much for your video. I still got nothing though. Any other ideas??? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video! That glue was a pain in the a** to get apart. A copper coil has a broke connection in mine. Do you know if I should replace the whole piece or just reconnect the broke connection?
My sons pint w/ 1k + trouble fee miles had both front and rear LED go out at the same time. I have had it apart to swap the tire so I’m ok w/ disassembly, think this will be the same issue and fix for us?
Thanks for doing this
Really helpful video, just wish the audio was a little more clear. Thanks for all the help!
I can already tell I'm gonna have to refer back to this video soon 😂 My wife goes hard (Sandy Peter)
c0pyimitati0n haha, she's awesome! If you're under warranty, just Send it in. No point in voiding the warranty for this
Grind671 I feel like this would fall under the 'Magnuson Moss Warranty Act' ... I figured if I go in and secure it now, then I won't have this problem happen at all.
c0pyimitati0n it does, but you'd have to spend time fighting them about it
so do you think the adhesive holds up fine after doing this? Do you think it has the same water resistance?
It's hard to say, but I think the gaskets aren't as good as before you open them. If you're really worried about water, you might want to seal all the entry points with silicone
Is the back led a different process of working on?
what version is your board? 4209 ? etc. look under settings in the OW app.
Nice video. I didn't see the middle hex screw so I busted mine off silver plate when I opened the box 😭
Could this potentially resolve no power? Is there a chance on of the cables came loose? I have an xr for reference. Thanks!!
Not sure if you still monitor this video or not but do you have to drain the battery prior to opening/changing the connector for the lights? Just got a new one to replace mine due to the front white lights not working.
Anyone know what would make my front right side foot pad (pin 1 to GND) stop working? Te footpad is fine, it's on the motherboard side, that is the problem.
I had the LED wire severed, all of them too.
It's pretty common for the pins on the pcb to separate from the contacts on the board. Solder will probably have to be added to re-connect the pins to the contacts on the connector that the footpad connects to.
Does anything happen if you undo the footpad sensor? You can just plug it back in and go, yeah?
c0pyimitati0n no problem. Just plug and play
I know this is late advice but use 99% isopropyl alcohol when facing adhesive. The alcohol will make removing it easy when wet, and become sticky again when dry. It has to be 99% you don't want contaminants in the alcohol.
Did you do any kind of waterproofing after opening the controller up? Are the seals ruined after this process?
You have to get new gaskets for the connectors and seal it again if you do this.
So doing this will void the warranty on the + and XR models?
Yes, opening the controller housing will void the warranty for the controller on all models.
Dammit, I'm sending in after vacation
Thanks for the video. Do you know if this issue exists on the XR?
It does
@@Grind671 That's really bad especially seeing is FM must definitely know about this issue. Do you think it's worth opening up my Plus and doing this mod before the LED wire breaks?
@@cubiq1 no. If its under warranty. Let FutureMotion fix it. If its not, just wait for the issue to occur
@@Grind671 OK thanks.Do you think it's possible getting a small piece if foam in the box without having to take the entire lid off?
@@cubiq1 yeah, people do it all the time.
Where’s your grounding strap Mr.? Lol lights just went out on my boys board. Hopefully this is all that’s wrong. 🤞
How did you get the plastics off
What plastics? If you're asking how to open the case, it's in the video
My pint has been doing the same thing will this help?
Me too, i have no fucking clue, can't find anything online about this with the pint
Is the process for a XR the same? And does the board get less waterproof after this?
Yes
Grind671 for both questions?
@@benediktstaritz7327 yes and yes. The OneWheel isn't very waterproof anyway. If you want to waterproof it, consider using the badger kit @ www.badgerwheel.com
Grind671 alright, thanks!
@@Grind671 my board was badgered by someone else.. Would opening up the controller like this ruin any badgering done and would need to be re badgered then?
How applicable is this tutorial for an XR?
It's the same
@@Grind671 Thank you! :)
You'd think they would glue this thing down man...
c0pyimitati0n yeah, they have solid engineering and this is one of those things that makes me scratch my head
Grind671 I'm thinking i might just go ahead and do it ahead of time.
So my wheel is 5 mo old... and the red light on the bat side is not working. I hope FM will send me the control box. Definitely a design flaw.
Paul wojdac I'm in the same situation. Got all things from FM to send it in for repair for free - as long as they don't find something the warrenty wouldn't cover. If this is the case I'd have to cover the repair+shipping costs by myself. I've read some stories of people who sent it in because of "small" issues like our broken lights, and suddenly had to pay big amounts of money to get it back.. Have you sent it in already?
I have not sent it in yet... they will not send me a control box stating that the connections are sensitive. Doesn’t FM realize most of us are geeks with a tool box...
It seems that they could send the control box with a disclaimer and a core charge and have better customer service less down time, cheaper repair less demand on their support maintenance folks.
If the connections are sensitive... they should be ruggedized and redesigned the OW board. It is publicized as a rugged trick friendly snowboard experience, and should not have wimpy connections...
but then again the lights don’t work so i would hope FM replace the connectors with new connectors that will live up to the OW publicized capabilities
On the hostage comment, I would be ashamed to own a OW if they make repairs with out my consent and hold my board hostage Shame...shame shame...
Warranty void if removed stickers are actually illegal. They cannot enforce them.
It's actually illegal for a company to void a warranty for simply disassembling their product because of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975
You conveniently do not show removing the most difficult one
