I had a very similar experience when I was younger but it was getting bras, I was about 10 and had developed early and the sweater I was wearing was loosely crocheted so there were small holes in it. My dad was called from work and the situation was explained to him, we lived about 30 minutes away from the nearest town and he kept asking me why I didn't tell him I needed bras. Of course I had no answer for him. We arrived at a zellers(a now closed retail store in canada) and he basically dumped me on the first female worker he found. She was a middle aged lady and she watched my dad walk away shaking her head then looked at me and gave me the warmest smile. She talked my dad into buying me a whole new wardrobe to go with my new undergarments. I never forgot that moment, I hope she's doing well and recieves all the best, because at the end of the day she gave a scared girl some confidence and that in itself is amazing.

Your dad should have stayed to support you. It's not supposed to be awkward for him, it's important for him know what's going on. As a scared girl you need your father there.

@@steelhurricane4041 Obviously, but there must be a reason why she went shopping with her dad and not her mom. If you only have your dad, you should be able to count on him. As difficult as it is, it is _his_ responsibility to learn and teach about bras, periods, safe sex, etc. And you don't want to make your child think that they have to be embarrassed about it by getting embarrassed himself.

Yeah, my little brother is already learning (he’s five and extremely intelligent, I taught him about lgbtq because I’m bi and he was curious and he caught on very quickly) about that and my dad knows what’s happening too. It’s very important for them to understand what a period is, my dad can help me and my sister if my mom or grandma isn’t around and my brother will be able to understand what’s happening to his classmates or SO (if he’s with a girl) and help when he’s older
I have 3 boys and they Will learn for sure.
My son is 2 he knows first I told him it was diaper apparently he got confused on it bc he thought I needed it every time I went to the bathroom. Afterward I just told him to get mommy’s pads and he would just bring it to me. He would leave the bathroom afterward. He walked in saw blood n cried for 15mins. My poor boy. He’s not traumatized bc he saw blood again when he fell and scraped his leg and thought it was fun to play with it.

Shook is used when meaning to physically shake something in the past and shaked is used for being shaken in terms of emotion in the past.
@@Alex-vw9ij yeah but I've not just shaked my head, it is shook my head in the past tense. Context is everything, just like hanged, it's also correct in some instances, I can't just say I hanged the phone up in someone's face, it's hung up. And it is okay to correct people, English isn't even my first language, I know another 3 so spare me people can improve it's not a big deal. If I can learn, so can they.
I’ll never forget the talk with my dad. He sat me and my sisters down, took out a pen and paper and said “Dad’s going drawing.” He drew the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes and explained how our periods work. With the pads, my biggest takeaway from him was “remember, always put it sticky side down because I’m not going in there to help you.”😂😂😂

This is actually so sweet and has an important message. It’s so important for everyone to be educated about periods and other topics. It’s sad, because this isn’t even a bad father. Just an uneducated father. But Austin is also such a good father figure. ❤️

My dad raised me from age 13. I would just him “hey dad I need more money for supplies” worked. Luckily my family is a lot of mostly women. All our kids even know what periods are. My daughter had one a year ago and nothing sense. But I had messed up periods due to pcos. Miss my dad so much

No I'm going to have to disagree here the father being uneducated about his child's body is a bad father. Would you say that it was an uneducated father when their kid was suffering from a medical condition that the father never bothered to learn about? That is just irresponsible so no this is a case of a bad father because it is absolutely irresponsible to not know about the medical needs of your kid

I was a teen when it happened. My parents had blocked every class and book on human biology. I was in so much pain when it happened and I thought I was dying. Hospital was literally across the street from where we lived. I went into the ER and told them I was dying. They thought I was really dying or having a miscarriage. They find out it's my first period. Doctor sent the nurse to talk to me about womanhood. I was scare, mortified and embarrassed. As a mother I made sure my child knows all about her body.
That's disgusting and sad. I wish parents didn't have the option to block health classes just because they're labeled sex ed.

Same thing, I remember when I was little I found a book for young girls explaining periods, and I asked my mom what it was about and she threw it out in horror. I was home alone and thought I was dying.... I didn't go to the hospital but I nearly called 911 and my sister made it home just in time and explained it to me. It's ridiculous how some parents are terrified of talking about it. I never got an explanation about anything related to that from my parents

Gah! I am so sorry you had to go through that! I will never understand this strange need some (I'm assuming very religious) parents have to utterly obscure these things. It doesn't actually help anyone to be denied knowledge about how our bodies work. And know about your period does not equal encouraging promiscuous sex!
My dad was a navy medic, so he not only explained the basics of periods to me, but he also went into a lot of biology 9 year old me didn't really get. He talked about it for over an hour at the time. Ten years later and I still don't think I need to know that many 'fun facts' about the uterine lining, but it's the thought that counts, right? 😂

My dad studied medicine too and I could always talk to him about my periods more than my mom. He failed on buying pads for me (although he tried!), but he commiserated with me every month.

Austin is so sweet. He is definitely the right character for this situation. The kindness he has, helping her stay calm and helping her avoid most of the potential embarrassment. Austin is also very understanding and supportive of the father. To all the single fathers of daughters out there, (and all single parents out there) I wish you the best and respect you for everything you do and have done for your kids.

Young men need to know about periods. When boys find out about periods in school, all they do is make fun of the girls for having periods.
My dads a single dad, though I live predominately with my mam I spend a lot of time with him. He’s really old fashioned with these things, while I don’t mind telling everyone about it. He’d always just say “get whatever you need,” and he’d do his best to avoid looking at the pads. He’s only had one girlfriend since my mam and it didn’t work out. He lives alone with his two cats and honestly, I don’t think I’d have him anymore other way.
My family everyone knows and accepts that there will be blood whether it was my period , my dad's clumsiness or my brother's dare devil antics but those two also knew about periods. I remember being a teen and asking my brother to grab me pads from the bathroom so I could pack them or my personal favorite .... my dad was hanging with his friends in the yard and I walked out and loudly announced we needed pads and tampons cause my sister and I were out. He didn't even bat an eye and goes liners or big ones and my older sister hung over me and told him screw panty liners get the kind that can absorb lake mead without being so long they stick out the back of her underwear.
My dad's friends tried to give him shit about going to get menstrual supplies and he just replied , "yeah that makes sense why you probably don't have girlfriends or wives... much less daughters". After that he also told us girls that if our boyfriends were too manly to go to the store for that stuff replace them.
I know some people will think this video is a ridiculous exaggeration but this is a REAL thing. My 6th grade best friend's parents were divorced and she lived with her dad. Her mom was a long-haul trucker and sometimes she wouldn't see her for 6 months. Her dad bought her ONE box of pads and thought that was all you had to do (I guess when he was married he saw what he thought was the same box in the cabinet and assumed one box was good forever, omg). Our ANGEL of a gym teacher asked my friend to "help her clean out the storage room for extra credit" and gave her a ton of products. Thank you Mrs. Hartnett - we will never forget you!

I had a student while I was taking a break from nursing (hospice and psych) that her Uncle didn't think she needed feminine products and refused to buy them. She honestly thought something was wrong with herself bc no one ever told her about her menstrual cycle. I bought products for her so she could have what she needed. Her Uncle was a trip. I did run into her yrs later and she was living with different family members and thriving. But honestly broke me to try and tell this man about menstruation. He just didn't give a damn!

I got my first period at 10. My mum and five older sisters moved to Greece when I was 3, and all I had was my younger brother (1 year younger) and my dad. I was homeschooled because of my tics. My dad tried to explain best he could, but it was my little brother that managed to ask his teacher at school about it and the next day, I got a bag stuffed with pads, tampons, and chocolate. It's so important to prepare girls for their period. I had a neighbor that was a single father a few years back and as he was commenting on how his twin girls were growing I could tell he was leading up to some anxiety on when to talk to them. I just offered "If you need help prepping them for it, you know the talk and all let me know." His relief was palpable and he went on to ask a hundred questions and was surprised when I told him that he should be talking to them now-at 8- because menses can start very early nowadays. I myself was 11! We sat down next week with the girls, I went over everything, we got a shopping list together of essential supplies for when it happens and I started them out with a pack of pads for that first time so they would be prepared. That made a huge difference when only 3 months later one of them started. She ran over to my house and instead of needing a pad or being upset she just wanted some tips on cramping relief. I lent her my hot water bottle until her dad got her the rest of the items on the list later that day. It made what can be an embarrassing time all that much easier on her. So, ladies, if you know a single dad feel free to reach out to them first. They very well are too embarrassed to know how to ask for help on this and generally very welcoming of any they can get.

@@riyasingh2729 Bodies aren't disgusting. Bodily processes are not disgusting. Everyone should know how bodies work, especially their body. Periods are starting much earlier in girls now. There is an age appropriate way to let girls know what's coming, and that is good parenting. God forbid a girl starts bleeding, doesn't know what's going on, and thinks they are dying, or are scared or ashamed. That's much worse. Also, why would men be any good at talking about it? Even if they know what's going on, it's not something they've experienced. A girl will almost always be more likely to talk to someone who has experienced what they're going through (a woman) rather than someone who can never really understand.

Love this video. When my cousin started, she had no idea what a period was. We both come from a long line of VERY early bloomers. So, no school s#+ education yet. No one had talked to her about it. She thought she was going to die. Thankfully, my mom was very open and talked about everything my brothers and I needed to know. So, when I started, I just asked my brother if he knew where mom kept her pads and how to use them. All was well. I do think boys and girls need to know about this since some of those boys will grow up to be fathers.
My mom was an early bloomer so I started my period last week I'm 10

God, you remember the teen a few years ago who he had a whole rant on I think Facebook about how he felt girls needed to keep it in and that he thought it was just like peeing? The whole internet came after him for it. The thing was, it wasn't his belief of this, he was entirely uneducated about it as he had no sisters and his mom never thought it was important for him to know how a period worked.
Everyone should be taught about periods, girls struggle from the lack of knowledge about their own bodies too.
And we shouldn't shame men for not understanding at first!

Shout out to all the single dads who help out their menstruating children! My dad takes me to my gynecologist appointments and coped very well with my embarrassing post-hysteroscope anesthetic complaining lol.

First of all: THANK YOU for educating people about this.
Secondly: if you're a parent, I'd recommend having "the talk" with your daughter when she's about 7 or 8. We have seen onset of menses in girls as young as 8 before, although it is uncommon. To make things less awkward, you may like to say something to her along the lines of, "There are some things you need to know about growing up, things that will happen to your body. If you'd like, we can talk about this. If you'd be more comfortable, I can give you a book about it and we can go through it together or you can read it by yourself. I am happy to answer any questions that you have. Again, if you'd prefer, you can also write them as notes and I can write the answer back to you." (Some girls may be more comfortable with this approach, especially if they live in a larger household and there's less privacy.) You'll also want to educate her about the variety of sanitary products available to her. Just an FYI - tampons and menstrual cups can be used by virgins and won't cause your daughter to lose her virginity. She may appreciate it if you give her a few different things to try and then she can find what she likes.
An FYI for dads - it's very common, especially when girls first start menstruating and they don't know when their periods are going to come, that they get blood on their clothes or bedding. The two key things here are not to embarrass her or get angry, and to rinse bloody things in COLD water before washing. What I told my daughter was that I'd never get mad at her for leaking - it happens sometimes. I just needed to know if she had anything soaking so I could make sure it was washed.
Your daughter may like to learn about fertility awareness methods for determining when she's ovulating. Modern methods use physical signs and symptoms and can be used even by women and girls with irregular cycles. Now, obviously this is most commonly used in regards to achieving or avoiding pregnancy, but it can also be useful for detecting health issues and even for predicting periods. Generally, the time between ovulation and menses is consistent between cycles in the same woman, usually to within a day or two. So if you know when you ovulate, after a few cycles you can predict, based on that, when to expect your period. There are many methods you or your daughter can try, such as Billings, Serena, and Creighton.
Fertility awareness methods are excellent for all of the above! ESPECIALLY for keeping track of your cycles. I hate being surprised by my period, especially because I have debilitating cramps, but with NFP, I can gauge the day before it starts and be prepared.
This talk should definitely NOT be reserved to girls. It must be held with all children. Males often getting 0 education on it is exactly what this video is about. All children have to learn this and do so really early!!
Rinse bloody things in warm (but not hot) water and they'll come out easier. Basically, using a temp similar to body temp helps to re-liquify and loosen the blood better than cold water. But too hot and you'll set the stain.

I'll add that rinsing in cold water will be extra effective if you rinse from the opposite side as the water helps push the residual blood away from the fibers of the fabric.
🤣 I’m glad I don’t have to worry about my son understanding periods. He barged into the washroom when he was about 4 and saw me changing my pad, started crying and screaming because “mommy was bleeding” so we had a talk a little earlier than I thought but at least he knows I guess 🤣

Yeah I am so glad that me and my mom don't hide this shit from my brother he's 7 years old and he already knows that women have periods at least of course he doesn't know anything like that about it but he at least knows that when women have periods they're showing me cranky and that it's normal for them to bleed

Educating children, male or female, is very important. When I first started my period I was 11. At the age of 20 I JUST learned how to position my pad right so that i only need 1 lol. When I first started, I was at my grandparents house with my mother. At this point, I was expecting it. It didn't surprise me at all when i looked down and saw blood. I immediately knew what it was and immediately asked for pads (ofc i didnt think to ask how to put them on). I am prone to panic attacks and "episodes" due to mental illness. Had I not been informed beforehand, this experience would have been a lot different. Thank you, mom (and thank you big brother who gave me a much less child friendly version)

I’m 27 still no idea how to position those those things so I don’t get blood on my underwear OR size (just learn pads come in sizes?! *mind blown*) I was basically tossed into a “this is what you use” then left to figure it out, same with Tampons. (I do have a mom around but kind of get the same answers as always which…aren’t very helpful…)
To avoid embarrassing situations. Wear depends for the week. They are discreet and they dont have the embarrassing spills. Trust me save your pretty underwear. When aunt flo is around were the depends diapers. Anyone says something

This made me laugh. I showed an ex how to put a pad on underwear in case he ever had to explain what a period was or how to use a pad. He only had brothers. So he knew about tampons, but I was like...while we are on this topic, I will just show him how to use pads if he ever has to show his daughter or if I am ( or another female) in his life is hurting too much from cramps. You never know.
Get the extra long or heavy ones (the foam ones from Always are the thinnest).
Me too, I had been to info sessions my primary school had, and my mom had given me a book (albeit a very EXPLICIT book) with cartoon pictures and diagrams, so I was all set when I woke up one morning and felt something moist.
I went to my step mom and she showed me how to put a pad on, and even gave me some tips
My dad found out that I had my first period at the age of 10 and that girls can get pregnant after they have their first period in the same conversation. The look of utter shock on his face was hysterical when he asked me if I could get pregnant 😂

I like this, this is sweet. The dad isn’t even a bad father, rather a very caring yet uneducated one. The fact he took his daughter to the E.R. for a random unexpected bleeding, not trying to imply he overreacted, but he took her there instead of treating it like a normal wound and using google or something, just proves he’s very caring.
I imagine if he lost his wife (death or divorce), he'd be especially sensitive to anything that goes on with his daughter. It's usually either full attention, or no attention.

First, it could be an accidental pregnancy (very obviously periods don't happen there)
Second, the father may not have a mother or grandmother figure, or have gotten the education about periods his entire life.

When I had my first period, my mom was out of town. My dad was too cute - he went to the grocery store and literally bought one of every box of anything he could find in that aisle. He brought home two paper bags full of stuff!!! I had creams and sprays and pads and tampons and even a pregnancy test. LOL

My mom was super pregnant, on bed rest, and mean as a bear, lol. I told my dad first, but he had to go to the store with me to get pads (all we had in the house were the postpartum super absorbent mattress pads, lol). He was so lost, but doing his best. 😂

My dad did something very similar when I was taking a lot of meds post-surgery & they caused constipation. I think he came home with every item he thought might be helpful.
I was in my 20s - staying with my parents bc of the surgery, so I was totally okay with making fun of him for it too.

A long time ago, I had a boyfriend who didn't know periods existed. I was stunned. Years later, as a Mum to two girls and two boys, we talked openly about periods, reproduction and relationships. How can men have healthy relationships if they're not educated?
Funny story: my dad was the one who explained menstruation to me when mine started when I was 12. It wasn't like Mum couldn't have done it. She was home, but Dad pretty much went: "Don't worry, I got this." He even told my little brother (who is cisgender and the middle kid) and my little sister (who is cisgender and the youngest) too about periods. Told us all to sit down on the sofa and brought out papers with diagrams on them. Dad treated the whole thing as a biology lesson (even though he was a bus driver). It went well (except when my brother got jealous that I have to skip prayers when menstruating. But he got over it a few months later when we found out how painful cramps can be). After the lecture, Dad took all of us shopping for pads (but Mum ended up having to show where the best ones are). 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 That day is one of my fondest childhood memories!!!! Alhamdulillah!

@@lunarlotis3746 it’s okay! In our religion, it’s forbidden to do a Islamic act like reading the Quran (our holy book) or praying if you are bleeding. When your periods have stopped, you have to take a shower, head to toe and then you can start. Hope this helped!

I’m glad they still took her back to check her out. My niece is 10 and had vaginal bleeding and my sister in law was convinced it was just her period but I insisted on her going to the ER. My niece was very pale, seemed lethargic, complained of pain, and started to even develop a fever; things I’ve never experienced together during the time of the month besides the pain. I’m so glad I convinced her to take her because turned out she actually had something seriously wrong that wasn’t her period at all! This almost made me cry - first, for the young girl, who needed someone knowledgeable so badly (Starting your period for the first time is tough enough without your dad freaking out about it!). Second, because I love what Austin is growing into. I'm unaccountably proud of him, and of you, Steveioe. Great job as usual.
I am so grateful for my dad when I started. He was very understated, and he gave me pads when I needed them. My parents didn't talk much about periods and girl stuff. (2 sisters and me, no brothers: Dad never had a chance!)
But maybe they knew someone was going to be a biologist? I read the books they bought for my older sister when she started. But she didn't read them and had no objection to me taking them over.

When I started, I thought it meant I was going to have to leave all the kid things behind and grow up right away, and I was in the third grade, so this was devastating to me. When my mom told my dad, he went out and bought sundaes for both of us. By giving me that ice cream, he meant that it's okay, you can still be a kid, and I love you. But he never said a word. He just ate his sundae and I ate mine. I wonder if I ever told him how much I loved him for that. I hope so!

Many girls are often anxious because you're they're literally bleeding from their vagina, a very private part of their body that until now, many have neven payed much attention to. Many girls also find it hard to settle into the routine of changing their menstrual products on a regular basis and there's always the fear of leaking and staining your clothes. It can be very difficult when starting out but it becomes easier after you learn your own cycle/body
My mom explained what a period was before I started puberty, so I wasn't surprised when I saw blood. My dad's always been very chill about it. I remember a lot of times where he would go get my pads for me or one time I asked him to bring me home a slice of my favorite chocolate cake and he brought home the entire cake lol
On a side note, my husband wasn't super educated on periods, but when I accidentally bled all over the bathroom floor while trying to get in the shower, he just casually cleaned it up for me. He has also washed my reusable pads for me so I could sleep and all sorts of stuff. It always blows my mind when men, especially ones with children, don't know about the basics of the female reproductive cycle.
I've seen too many stories where people's teachers/bosses/other male authority figures thought you could "hold in" a period like urine. So, I really love that Austin made it super clear that she couldn't do that. And I love the gunshot analogy! Bleeding is bleeding, and blood's going to get everywhere unless you give the bleeding person something to absorb the flow. In other words: let students and employees go to the damn bathroom! (Seriously, menstruating or not. Even though you can hold some things in, it isn't good for people to do so).
It's not really accurate. It's not because it's blood that you can't hold it in. It's because the vagina doesn't have a sphincter.

When I worked as a camp counselor at a Girl Scout camp, part of the training was how to handle girls who get their periods for the first time at (sleep away) camp. This included what to say to girls that had no idea what a period even was. There was a section in the (age appropriate) Girl Scout handbook about menstruation that basically said "this happens to all women about once a month and lasts about a week, stay clean, and if you have more questions ask a trusted adult like your parents", but some parents would rip that section out and their daughter would never see it. You just know that if those girls had any brothers, then the brothers definitely weren't told about periods. So yeah, a full grown man not knowing anything about periods is a sad reality that I can believe in.
I was genuinely shocked with the amount of men that don't have any idea of what periods are. I've heard and seen so many guys saying "well, you guys need to just hold it in, you need to schedule your periods" and so much more.
We really need to education around periods. It's one of the most natural things in the world.

huh. I live in a Christian majority country and reproductive health is definitely a part of the school curriculum. I won't claim to be a Biblical scholar but I don't think it teaches that reproduction is disgusting. Reproduction and women's health is different from modesty and chastity.

The more stories about periods I hear the happier I am that my progressive, feminist grandma explained them to my dad just like she explained them to my aunts, because she thought it was basic knowledge and also that if his sisters needed help and she wasn't home he'd know what was going on. Plus she thought (correctly) it would be useful for any future girlfriends or children.
Consequently my father always saw it as another fact of life. He actually was a LOT more help than my mother, who didn't want to tell me anything remotely sex related (conservative Catholic bs my dad was just not putting up with).
Fun fact: my mother is one of those rare, lucky individuals who don't experience period pain. My sister inherited this but I didn't; mine are extremely painful. In a bizarre twist of how these things usually go, my mother has been the one telling me all my life that I'm exaggerating while my father would make chamomile tea, ensure I had chocolate and painkillers, and told me to not worry, that his eldest sister had the most Godawful cramps too.
Even further, it was him who believed me and realized I was in much more pain than normal, so he insisted I see an obgyn while my mother complained about my "whinging". I have a hormonal disorder that amongst other things causes extremely heavy and painful periods, and I wouldn't have been diagnosed if it hadn't been for my dad 🙃

Yup, when I got mine I was shoved a pad and that was it. Had to get a job in order to buy pads, and other hygiene stuff. Hygiene was not a priority for my mother.

I honestly don't know many that exist especially who have children considering the mom would have had her period but sadly some men like this are really out there. That is just silly. You always make sure you are stocked up. Pads are just like toilet paper. Just make sure you have some on hand.

Ah, good times. I gave my baby sister a period party. Lord, was she embarrassed at first (it wasn't a surprise and she told me who to invite). It's been 20 years and she still talks about it. Two of her friends asked me to give them a period party when their time came. I was 10 when I got my 1st period and I remember it being horrifying and all the women telling me how horrible periods were and that I'd have this awful thing for the rest of my life. My grandma called it the curse. I firmly believe it should be considered a positive thing and so much more education needs to be done about it. I also wish we'd get more information on miscarriages and that people would talk more openly about them. And now that I am going through menopause, there is again so little conversation about it. It's like we avoid the truth of all hormonal issues with women. I almost wish we still had women's circles like some cultures or a place where we could celebrate each other and all our rites of passage.😊
Yes! Menopause is just an absolute (terrifying to me and always has been) mystery. Pregnancy has always been just terrifying and I KEEP learning scarier things that they just don't tell you! I wish being a woman had been studied and the information shared as much as men have.

Same, except my friends explained what was going on when I was in my second one. My dad assumed mom had told me everything (since she told him she would), but he's still the only one that ever bought me pads or helped me get iron and calcium. This year (I'm nearly 30) he found out that mom never discussed periods or pregnancy or puberty with us at all.

I think this may be my favorite of your posts. so sweet.... When I worked as a fertility nurse I had to explain to an adult woman how pregnancy happens, parts etc. I felt for her.
I had to educate my boyfriend all about the menstrual cycle. He knew that periods existed but not much else. I went into all the details about why women bleed, how the cycle of hormones shifts throughout the month, and about how my particular birth control works. I’m case we have a daughter and I die early, he will be very well equipped to take care of her.
Mannn I really hope there isn’t actually a grown man out there who has a child but still doesn’t even know what a period is. 😩 I love it when men (and women) treat periods as normal and not gross or embarrassing.

One time, when my dad and one of my aunties were younger and home alone. My aunty started to freak out cause she just started bleeding. She had no idea what was going on and she thought something was horribly wrong. My dad was the youngest so he didn’t know what to do, but he went and got her his favourite teddy bear in hopes that it would make her feel better.

Normalizing and making period care a common knowledge is important. I was always exposed to my mom's pads and even saw her period once and I definitely panicked thinking she hurt herself but she explained what a period was and that I will have it to as long as I am a healthy and not malnourished, so when I finally did get my period around 11~12 at home, I just very calmly went to my mom's cabinet and used her pad and told my mom I finally got my period and she was like oh cool, let's get you some more proteins and iron then. Also, my dad was always annoyed and grossed out at how often I'd get my periods all over the place (to this day the amount of blood that comes out fluctuates and it gets messy) but at least he was chill about buying pads and even knew my preferred size and brand 🤷♀️🤣 like it was same ole same ole in my family
My friend told me that in her seventh grade health class, when they got to the puberty unit, one of the boys said “Aren’t tampons used by girls to stop pregnancy?” My friend and I laughed for a little while after that 😂
Lol takes me back to when my older sister started and all 4 of us girls were with Dad so we all made a trip to the pad aisle of the pharmacy. There have been very few days when I've been able to tell that my dad was out of his element and stressed. That was definitely one of them lol
I'm female. I get stressed at that aisle. I want a godamn starter pack where we get a set of 1-7 (depending on if it's single use or not) of at least 5 brands and types to try.
I can't describe how much it sucks to have to get through a whole package or gift the rest of it away when they're not compatible with you.
I've made the experience that some pads give me inflammation, cause their scents and whatever are not doing me any good or they're too rough. And then there's those which don't stick well, those which feel too thick or thin! I LOATHE when they change designs or composition and make it all "better" and then I'm restarting that blasted search from 0 again. As if menstruation as such wasn't literally a pain already!

My husband was clueless until we married and I had to teach him. I also taught him flowers and chocolates every month. Then we had kids and two were daughters. He got very good at grabbing a assortment when grocery shopping monthly. A cashier told him one day that he was a good hubby. He laughed and told her he was also a awesome dad. But the way he saw it- he had 3 beautiful women to bless his life, but the guy with the micro meal at the end of the line- was alone. So he didn’t mind and this was well worth it. 😉
My husband always figures if he's buying period products, the cashier will either not notice or realize he has women in his life. As long as he's told exactly what to buy and ideally sent a picture, he's fine.

Ancient adult ICU RN here (now working telephone triage): I loved this. You're a sweet man. I worked at a hospital years ago that catered to strictly cardiac surgery (in theory, but we had a little of everything eventually) and they touted private rooms that were hotel quality with pull out guest beds. I took care of an elderly woman who had custody of her granddaughter who had to stay too. Poor little gal got her first period during that stay and our patient pads were just too huge - I brought a bunch of tween sized pads for her the next day. This made me think of her (now in her 30's) and hoped she has had a wonderful life.

Both my sons are informed about periods, my oldest is now 25, married and 2 children, 1 boy and 1 girl. When his girlfriend got her period one day, and she ran out of supplies he went into the store and bought them when he was 17. She was embarrassed, and didn't want to tell him what brand or anything, but she finally gave in. My youngest is 15, and he has run into the store for me to get my supplies. I feel that if they are informed and ready if someone they know, and/or love has a need, they can help.
Plus it always makes his wife/girlfriend/woman he's around grateful that he's willing to help instead of cringing and telling her that it's her problem to solve. Dated a misogynistic shithead like that once and he always cracked jokes about "I don't trust something that can bleed for a week and not die."

And once again, I am so thankful for my father. I’m 50 years old. My parents had both talked to me about puberty before I “needed” the info (ok - Dad talked, Mom bought good books that had factual information which tracks cause Dad had been a combat medic in the Army and then became a social worker and Mom was a librarian so 🤷♀️). And when I did get my first period? Dad brought me flowers - because it is a milestone and he always brought Mom or I bouquets for special occasions. Proud to say my “radical” idea that kids and teens have a right to age appropriate fact based knowledge of human biology and reproduction without judgement or shame was taught by my parents in both word and deed.
It boggles my mind that in an educated society, we allow people to reach and even use their fertility without adequately educating them on how our bodies reproduce.

I love this! I got my son kid friendly books on puberty and sex when he was little. Knowledge takes the fear and mystery out of what could potentially be really confusing stuff. It also created a trust between us where he feels safe to ask personal questions...which is super helpful since he's now a pre-teen navigating the internet and a lot of misinformation from his peers!

Ok I'm a nurse, and, as silly as this video seems, his portrayal was pretty spot on. I haven't had a father not know what a period was, but did have one bring in his very reluctant daughter
to the ER frantic, because she was only 11 and he thought she was too young for a period so something must be badly wrong. When I explained it's absolutely possible, and normal, for an 11 year old to get her first period, he was so relieved he teared up and kept hugging her saying "Oh baby I'm so sorry if I embarrassed you" then immediately embarrassed her by asking "should I go buy the....you know.... *stuff* now? What should I get her? Do I need to measure anything?" His frantic concern for his "baby", to his stunned acceptance, to his mortification that he'd humiliated his child, to immediately going into what I call "Dad Mode" was too sweet and cute for me to be annoyed!
I also had a mother bring in her toddler son, worried sick because he'd "gotten a boner" when she was changing him!

My (single) mother never gave me the talk or told me much about periods. She gave me a couple puberty/growing up books, but that was about it. I knew about periods, but I had no idea what they actually entailed. I even started getting cramps and spotting a couple months before they started. It was scary. I remember it was before school started, and it felt like I had to poo when nothing came out. My mom just handed me a pad and sent me on my way (nothing happened then). Later, my period ACTUALLY started and it happened when I was out of town. I remember that I was 12 because that's the last time I saw one of my uncles until this year. It was even worse than the cramping because there weren't any pads, and I didn't know how to ask for any. Thankfully, though, that was the last day of the trip and toilet paper was enough to get me through it. All that said and done, I am the oldest of 5 kids (2 sisters, a trans brother, and a cis brother). My mom had no idea what she was doing, and I didn't have any older cousins or something to learn from. Being the oldest-oldest child of a family is very not fun.

I still remember when I was 7, I saw bloody tissues and pads in my moms trash bin. I was confused and asked her what it was (my mom says that I was pretty smart and I was mentally older than my age). She explained everything to me, including the different stages of the period, how to change pads, the pain of it and how to relieve it, and etc. Once I got my first period, I was 100% ready, thanks mom!

@@chibigirl8545 Once a day? more than that. Pads need to be changed as soon as they are full of blood. Tampons need to be changed more frequently since there is blood up there and you risk infections by leaving them in too long. Period stages differ for every girl, I personally have heavy flows and cramps on the first and last days, with light bleeding and little to no cramps.
