  • Our visit to the historical village of Thomas River was truly amazing. After hearing recommendations from our viewers, we decided to explore this charming place, and it exceeded our expectations. The meticulous restoration of the village transported us back in time, with highlights like the enchanting old church, informative museums, and a delightful bar and restaurant venue. Spending the evening there was a privilege, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the fascinating stories and heritage of Thomas River. This village with its rich history dating back to 1801 is a must-visit for anyone looking for authenticity, peace and quiet, away from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life. It was a special and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #thomasriver

    Love the aqua rooftops. Although there's many South African places which are special, there's something unique about this area. In my opinion, it looks like they do more with less. Not easy to pull off without dedication and hard work. Something in which South Africans are not allergic to, unlike a lot of places on the globe. Unfortunately...

    Hi you two! Blue skies and gravel roads into history! This place is fantastic. Hats off to the people who have done the meticulous restoration work and to those who are keeping it up. I really hope that it will receive enough visitors to keep it going in the fine state it is in now. I have never even heard of the place, but is now on my list of go to's for sure! Will need more than a few days to see and visit the museums and the surrounding reservation(s).

    Never heard of Thomas River before. What a wonderful find! The gravel road is so pretty, especially the old bridge over the river, that takes me back a few. Love the church full of bees. Would love to explore that library. The old motor home is amazing. The model railway look just like my dads old Hornby trains. Wow! The old telefoonhokkie with the old telephone!! This place is just so rich in many things to see. Back in my youth my dad had a Kodak projector and as a teacher he would get movies from the education department. So once a fortnight was movie night!! I can remember when petrol was bought in gallons. Sjoe!! I am old!! The old station is so special. Its so amazing how well preserved ll these places are, this whole town should be declared a national monument. So amazing to discover the old rail bridge.

    Hello Ma’am and Curtis,
    I am still following you on every visit. Thank you for this fascinating and most interesting place. I was aware of Thomas River, was mentioned a lot by friends in Stutterheim. But I was so close to it, never visited.
    I salute the people that look after the place, just hope the next generation will keep it up.
    Thomas River, two train stations, reminded me of Thomas The Train tv series. Ma’am the station master’s wife might consider Thomas River Train as a title for her new book.
    I just loved all the items in those buildings and would love to wander along and thoroughly explore, too much to mention.
    Thanks you lovely couple.

      Nope, there aren't many burglar bars. I don't think there is any need for them. With only one road in and with a boom and camera system in place, I'm sure it's too much of a risk for anyone to come and take chances in this special place. 😨 How cool that you can call an Olympic medallist family! 🏊‍♀️ Dusty was totally bushed that night after all the fun he had that day! 🚙😍🧸

    Now that was just a fantastic visit to Thomas River. What a great place. Curtis remember that phone booth used to be called a Tickey Box. The curry looked yum as well as that nice Shepherds pie that Sonia ordered. Thanks both of you for showing us this gem of a place. A credit to the owners for keeping the history alive with the museums. You sadly did not make it to Pacaltsdorp historic church on your visit to George. We used to stay at Carmel Christian guest Farm in the 1960's. I attended Manie le Roux Primary and Mr Weppenar was our Principal. Then off to Outeniqua Hoer Skool for Std 6. So Sonia and I can share some memories of the sixties and early seventies in George. I loved the old library with the oak tree out front. Used to get all my Tintin and Biggles books there.

      This is a fantastic place, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🚙🤩 I remember a tiekieboks very well! 🤣☎️ The owners are doing a sterling job to maintain this historical village. 👏🏻 If we have to visit every single place in a town or area we get to, we'll never be at home or get any work done. It's simply not possible. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Sonia made it to George in the mid-70's, so you may have left by then.

    • @tonynz9954
      @tonynz9954 Před 8 měsíci +2

      I agree with you about not having enough time to see everything. We sold our farm at Hansmoeskraal in 1974 and bought a Boer Bok farm at Withoogte just outside Uitenhage. Did Sonia attend the new Primary School which replaced Manie le Roux ? So many fights at that Primary school between us Rooinekke and the Rockspiders. York High English school was being built in 1974 when we left. Interesting that her brother also attended Outeniqua High. So sad that George was living up to its reputation of Cold And Wet when you were there.@@DustBugsTravel

    Hi guys when I think I've seen it all Thomas river shows up .down gravel Road to a trip back in time I could see you two were in your element and so was I!! I loved every thing about it the history about the name a British deserter killed by a poison Bushmans arrow unbelievable you could not make it up !!! .it seems like the Wardle family have a great deal of history here and how great you met the present generations. My brain and eyes struggled to pick up the old item's so I'll just list a few the Rugby camper van crazy love it .cut the legs off the chair to wash the kids in a tin bath like in my uncles house. The old webbing and helmets so many memories. The repurposed bar from the post,office also the poster of the showmans traction engine as it relates to my ancestors. The Sap station with the rondevelles accommodation. The old train water pump building photo spot .three dustbugs on the stoop set the scene ( my gills were flapping with that cold larger lol) I think you two should write a book ( Railway tracks in the mist a African adventure) I would definitely read it .guys this video has blown my mind wonderful on a rainy day in kent.
