S1 - Ep 410 - Kayser’s Beach and Christmas Rock!

  • Our journey to Kayser's Beach and Christmas Rock was a bit challenging due to the road conditions, but we managed to reach our destination. Exploring Kayser's Beach was intriguing, as we discovered the presence of a shipwreck nearby and learned about a plane crash into the ocean just offshore, which was previously unknown to us. Christmas Rock had a picturesque gravel road leading to the river mouth and the narrow roads winding through the village created a tight-knit and welcoming community. Overall, our time in these two locations was both informative and enjoyable as we explored and got to know them better. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #kaysersbeach #christmasrock

    Jip, another place I know well, have a cousin living & Kaysers, nothing much happens there😅. Curtis anyone who survives driving those roads in East London and surrounding areasunknowingly earn their PhD certificate ( pot hole dodgers)😂. Well done 💪 . Thank you for sharing, 🚙🚙

      I thought you may know these two well too! 😁 The roads to both these places were quite rough, but we were fortunately rewarded with incredible natural beauty at both! That more than made up for the holes in the road. 🚙🤩

    Hi you two! Thanks for picking me up for another unforgettable trip, navigating through the potóles under blue skies to the blue sea, foaming white waves, stunning rocks on huge beaches. I have never heard of either Kayser's Beach or Christmas Rock, but after this video of yours I will not forget them. The towns are beautiful, neat and peaceful, placed in wonderful nature. The gravel road to the river mouth through the green tree tunnel was fascinating. It seems, Curtis, that you may now add river mouths, plane- and shipwrecks to your railroad and -stations tracking list! Thank you again Sonia for all the info you provide during your chats. It really makes these trips not only beautiful but even the more interesting.
    I am ready for the next outing.
    Keep safe!

      You and the blue skies! I always think of you when the skies are blue and fortunately it happened for us this day! 🚙💙 The shipwreck certainly made up for the absence of train lines! That story of the plane crash so long ago was a surprise to us, we had no idea. The river mouth was a spectacular sight once we reached the sand at Christmas Rock. The Eastern Cape is gorgeous indeed! 😍

    Hi guys another gem the people who live in these seaside towns are truly blessed. I can't get over how lovely they are !!!the Freisian cows and Dutch style houses could be in Holland lol .the sunshine Coast definitely delivers on stunning scenery and beautiful beaches love the story about the sealacant fish and the trip in the taxi!!! We used to use those shells as ashtrays we called them mother of pearl shells .Sonia your getting good at guessing the church dates .as you were driving around Christmas rock I noticed a little bakie outside a lovely house that would be my dream !!! I thought the surfboards were a brilliant idea. The bit about rocking around the Christmas tree made me smile..nature reserve and game park on your door step unbelievable it always amazes me how you can drive right to the beach on that stunning canopy covered gravel road. The dunes and the beaches are mind blowing in their beauty love driving down the narrow roads seeing the different style properties even thatched rondevelles lovely place to live and one can only dream. Going to look at the property prices straight away .thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

    This is where my soul is! Our house there doesn't have electricity (it's one of the original old houses that you literally drove past!), so the smell of the salty sea, parafin, candle wax and wood are a mix that I remember so deep down that I can smell it just by seeing that beautiful old house. Wish I could still go every September!

    Intriguing!! I would certainly be stocking up on veges out there. Kaysers beach is so beautiful. I would be picking shells from all those. Even broken pieces. One can make amazing mosaic from them. Smoking is not a sin. The rock pools must have been awesome. I wou;d love to see you rocking round the christmas tree!! I think all those roads should have been gravel.

      Those approach roads to both villages were rather potholey, but we took it slow and were just fine! Wow kaysers....honestly that road never been good even as a gravel road 50 years ago it was horrible. Xmas rock sure blew me away.....wowzer used to be a caravan park. Could be why streets r so narrow. If i remember correctly many years ago people started buying their caravan stands thats why everything so on top of each other and narrow. But freak out where the shacks I remember. Good to see good to know. It's booming🎉🎉 im guessing you sleeping in Gonubie. Also lived there for a while. Lekker man lekker you in slummies brew ❤🎉❤ far out man.

      Wow, we never knew Christmas Rock was first a caravan park. The narrow streets do make sense now. It's a cute place! The roads to both these places were rather dodgy, but we don't let that stop us! 🚙😁 I can hear the Eastern Cape lingo coming through strong! 🤣 Let us see how accurate your prediction is!

    I wonder if that huge pile of shells wasn't maybe a midden? Back in the day there would've been a lot of life on those rocks - enough to sustain human populations for tens of thousands of years - or even more. It's only in quite recent years that they've all been stripped bare. I think you found some middens somewhere before? I seem to remember something like that.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I've visited a shell midden in Stilbaai before (Episode 20.2), but it was a short distance away from the ocean. My thought is that these were crushed as the waves threw them against the rocks. I'm not sure a shell midden so close to the ocean would survive for long, especially during stormy weather. 🤷🏻‍♂️🐚🌊

    Another few episodes that brings back memories. Not too sure but I believe it is pronounced (Kaai)zers Beach. I hope that does not sound petty. I could be wrong and it does not really matter. We all know where you were I'll be on the lookout in case you stop at the cash store next to the Chalumna river. It used to have a sign up TCM Scheepers Cash Store. And maybe if you refuel there it will still be with a hand pump.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I always heard it being pronounced the way we said it, but I'm totally happy with either way! 😁 This trip was about two weeks ago already and we're long back home. We didn't stop at that cash store, perhaps another time! 🚙⛽

    • @RSA692
      @RSA692 Před 10 měsíci

      No big deal. I should not even have mentioned that. That was my aunt's pronunciation. Afrikaans speaking people in the Eastern Cape have some comical ways of speaking. Never heard anyone but her talk about brêkfis, dinner en sopper. In Afrikaans.....😅

  • @laurenthompson3096
    @laurenthompson3096 Před 10 měsíci

    When was this recorded? The road down to the beach has suffered major damage from rain. The seashells are everywhere because tons of people aren't there every day stealing them. I appreciate your video (cried like a baby missing home) but I hope no one else watches it and goes because it would destroy the peace and beauty there. Just after the shipwreck is Norris's pool and it is amazing to swim in. Rocks form a natural circle so kids are safe to swim in it (13:57 you're looking at it). If you had kept walking around that little corner, you would have found long beach and that would have blown your mind. Long sweeping beach with not a soul on it. If you're feeling strong, the hike between Kaysers and Xmas rock along the beach is incredible.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Před 10 měsíci

      The date is at the beginning of the video, it was on Monday, 23 October 2023. Natural beauty is meant to be shared, but rest assured not many folks are like us who don't mind the road conditions. That alone will scare off most folks. 🚙😁 I knew that I could continue walking, but I wasn't keen to leave my wife alone in the car for too long.

    • @laurenthompson3096
      @laurenthompson3096 Před 10 měsíci

      Yup, I rewarched the start, sorry for the muppet vraagie. The memorial stones are in memory of people who have loved Kaysers and you should also look up the rock engravings found nearby. Very interesting. It's a series of crosses attributed to a much older shipwreck between Kaysers and Christmas Rock. Can't find anything online but the locals know the legends. Also, fun fact, Kaysers had a bottle store before it had a church, bwhahaha! Thank you again for your video. Feeling homesick now!

      @DustBugsTravel  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Nope, absolutely no need for a 4x4. 🚙😁 We've done 60 000km over the past two years in sedans over rather tough terrain and on some roads that are much worse than the ones in this episode. The key is to drive responsibly and cautiously at all times.
