S1 - Ep 382 - Dundee - From Battles Fought to the Town's Origin!

  • Our recent visit to Dundee exceeded all expectations. Little did we realise the depth of history awaiting us as we set out on our journey. Our first stop at the Battle of Blood River site, where the historic events of 16 December 1838 unfolded, left us in awe as we walked through the area and contemplated the past. The following morning, as we explored the town, we were deeply impressed by the commitment to preserving its rich history. The informative markers and well-preserved buildings allowed us to immerse ourselves in the town's storied past. A visit to the Talana Museum was a must, and it proved to be a treasure trove of historical knowledge. There was so much to take in, from the tales of battles fought to the tales of farms established and the town's origin, that we couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the incredible history that Dundee had to offer. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #dundee #bloodriver

      Greetings to you in the UK! 🙋🏻‍♂️ Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the videos of these KZN towns, we loved visiting the area and history is always one of the things we love learning about. 🚙🇿🇦 Newcastle was initially on our route, but we ran out of time and had to get back home to do some work for a change! 😁 We hope to explore that town / city on a possible future trip back to the area. I appreciate you watching!

    As an artist the beginning of this episode was great food for reflection and a source of inspiration. Seeing the bronze laager monument to "The Battle at Blood River". Especially the drone views and the drone views of the river cutting deep into dry late winter landscape of the area.
    the song " With God on Our Side" from the early sixties came to mind. Thanks! Curtis and Sonya.

    I have never been to Dundee but, thaks to you, now I have. Wow Blood River, so prominent in our history. The kraal, or "laer" as it is called in Afrikaans, of oxen wagons as if it happened yesterday! Absolutely stunning and amazing to see it so close - you experience it in your veins!. Things like "Ou Grietjie" made the boers quite strong and that is the reason why they won the battle. The shop is big and sell nice things to remember the war. I said to myself "Start up the drone" and there it happened - thanks you drone footage well done!! I am impressed with the town and the CBD. Really a town of great historical value. You showed us so many historical buildings and heritage sites. Wow what a history do we find here. I loved the gallery/museum of Zulu craft. They manufacture such nice items from practically nothing.Thank you so much for this trip I really enjoyed it. On the next one my seat is booked.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Před 10 měsíci +3

      That laager also blew our minds, especially that the formation is an exact replica of what it was on the actual day. We were super lucky to get in there. If those incredible caretakers of the site weren't kind enough to open for us, we would've missed out on it and I'm not sure when we'll be back to the area. At one point I thought the only footage would be from the drone, until the gates opened! 🚙😁 The town is a treasure trove of historical monuments, buildings and facts and we didn't even scratch the surface! I think for any history buff, Dundee would be a must-visit! I'm glad you came along with us. Make sure the biltong is packed for the next one, we're going to need it! 🥓

    Hi you two! The visit to Bloedrivier was gripping, both historically and visually. Your drone view with its beautiful music capped it all, followed by a stunning sunset drive to town. I am glad to see that you could start your departure the next morning with cuppas! I don't think there are many places where history is so appreciated and preserved as in Dundee. The information boards with the detail of each site illustrates this. The Talana museum is out of this world, displaying San history from thousands of years ago to the coal (and railway!) industry of the last century. This was truly one of the most interesting trips you've taken me on. Thank you both for all your effort, not only your traveling but the editing of the visuals and sound, and more. We all appreciate that.
    I'll be at the roadside for the next trip --

      I'm glad you enjoyed the drone footage over the Blood River site. When we arrived at the locked gate, I thought that that might be the only footage I get. We were super lucky to get inside that day! That sunset was beyond spectacular. We often drive into sunsets, but this one was particularly beautiful. I'm glad you enjoyed it too. 😍🌄 The town of Dundee is any history lover's paradise. It was unbelievable for us as folks who love exploring on our own without a guide, to still be guided by those boards that are put up at the places of historical significance. 💒🏛 They did a sterling job! Talana Museum is a treasure trove of information and artefacts and an incredible place to visit. 👌 Editing is a huge task, but totally worth it when viewers like you enjoy and appreciate the end result. Thank you for coming to Dundee with us! 🚙🤩

    Hi guys I have now moved forward with technology and watched this video on my TV!!! Unbelievable how lucky to get into the battle field so interesting the vastness of the area one could only imagine being surrounded by Zulus every man a hero I now understand what the vow is and I'm convinced that our Lord was looking down on them 🙏 the voortrekker monument has more relevance to me now I'm just sorry I was not able to see it when I was in SA I loved the children's dolls house and the artifacts in the shop the drone showed how alone they were amazing to top it off a stunning African sunset!!! .I love the drive in the dark brings back memories and you were lucky again to get a pizza!!! Khaya 4 u looked great. Love tree lined streets the shopping area looks busy with plenty of choice great how you can U turn on the wide street nice to see how well kept the war memorials are kept also the artillery piece I bet the Royal Hotel would have been great inside the DRF church in the cape Dutch style is fitting for the place plus the battle memorial. I suppose there was going to be a Presbyterian church in a town called Dundee and what a interesting story of the minister and the torpedo boat .amazing memorial hall and ww 2 tank the Talana Park and museum out standing loved every thing about it definitely my cup of tea. It amazes me how the settlers tried to make their houses so up to date even a inside bath ( when I returned to the UK from SA stayed at my uncles house in tooting in London and they still didn't have a inside bath 1978 ) absolutely enjoyed this video so much history and watching it on my TV really was great thank you for taking me along cheerio till the next one

    Wow !! What an incredible visit to Dundee. From the Battle of Blood River site to the historic churches and buildings in Dundee. Just amazing. But the cherry on the top was the Talana Museum. That just blew me away !! Another wonderful steam engine and a lovingly restored carriage. As Curtis said , you could easily spend a day there. What a fantastic place and thankfully still so well preserved. Thanks for showing us the history of the Boer War, Zulu Wars , First and Second World Wars. A memorial to the Indians who worked in the coal mines .I did not realise that Indians worked those mines. We won't say too much about the accommodation, Sonia. The less said the better. The noise from that generator. Maybe stay at Bloedrivier next time. As for those tasty looking pizzas. All I can say is "YUM".🍕As you pulled up outside the Royal Hotel , I could not help but think of David Kramer singing "Hier sit die manne in die Royal Hotel ek ken mos vir almal ,ek is almal se pal ".I wonder if that Royal Hotel is still in business ?

      Yup, the folks in Dundee and surrounds know how to preserve history, that's for sure! 👌🏻 It was an absolute honour to visit the Blood River Battlefield, Talana Museum and the town of Dundee. Talana was an eye-opener, firstly in terms of its size and I was quite taken aback that an incredible facility is still operational in the South Africa of 2023. That really warmed our hearts. And secondly the detailed displays were amazing! The same is true for the folks who are the custodians of the Blood River Battlefield site. They have such passion for the preservation of history, which was really great to see and experience first-hand. 🏛️ If we knew we could overnight at Blood River, that would've been our first choice. I think that must be an awesome experience. The generator at our accommodation was adjacent to our room and fortunately loadshedding ended shortly after our arrival, otherwise my darling wife wouldn't have been as happy as she normally is when we're travelling. 😨 I'm not sure about the Royal Hotel, I do hope they reopen again soon. 🚙🏨 I'm glad you enjoyed this instalment of our KZN trip!

    How wonderful of them to let you in to see Blood River site. Amazing to see the wagons just as they were in the laager., though they could do with a good polish! On those flat plains they would have seen those Zulu impis coming from far away. I can only imagine their thoughts watching them approach. Oh dear! I do hate war but i do find that Geloftedag still gets honoured in the country very impressive. What an amazing visit, must have felt some vibes out there! Glorious sunset. Uh oh! I feel a painting coming on!! Mmmm...those pizzas look good! You better both have some garlic! Otherwise, fumes!!! Interesting to see all the monuments to remember those who have gone. Aha! Royal Hotel...ja, hier sit die manne!! Would be nice to see inside this old building. The church is another amazing old building, and my favourite architect is co designer! I bet he designed the clock tower, thats typical Moerdijk! Dundee truly understands the value of preserving history, which might otherwise be lost. Just wish you had shown more of that lovely old locomotive.

      @DustBugsTravel  Před 9 měsíci +1

      It was indeed a special experience visiting the Blood River battlesite. I have no doubt that, on the actual day, the wagons were dusty, rusty and unpolished and I again appreciate the authenticity of the laager. 👌🏻 As much as we love loco's, we've shown them many times, but there is only one Talana and it is huge! I didn't even include a quarter of the footage I took, so I decided to focus on the other things too which we seldom get to see. I do hope the Royal Hotel opens its doors again soon, I bet it's stunning inside. If the sunset painting turns out anything like the real deal, it will be a masterpiece! 😍🌄

    @MajJ Gemmell1927-Thank You for the visit to Dundee - Our Father Andrew Gemmell was born 9 December 1924 to Thomas & Grace Craig Gemmell from Scotland 1914 .
    I have never visited Dundee to my own disgrace - Mid 1960 Our Parents & younger Siblings visited Dundee , recently my Younger Brother Enlighted myself on their Visit spent several days on a Farm , Farmer 's Parents were Known friends to Our Father's Parents , my Brother can not recall their Names as he was 8 years old at the time . Our Grandfather was a Coal Miner.

    Wow! lot of my family history in the area. My Father was born in the Biggar`s Berg area 1904 and buried from the big chuch in Utrecht that you visited. So much history and beautiful scenery too!

      Those are indeed strong ties to the region. We were truly privileged and honoured to visit some of the historical sites in the greater Utrecht - Dundee area, we enjoyed it tremendously. And of course nature never disappoints! 🌳⛰️🌄 Thank you for watching our video.

    Hi guys! I'm watching from Dundee Scotland,the original Dundee from which all others worldwide are named after,including where you are here. Peter Smith was from a little village just outside Dundee Scotland. Our history goes back millenia. Our more recent history is absolutely jam packed with battles and seiges and a ton of history. Our little city has 5 castles,3 of which are from the late 1400's. Our oldest building in the town centre is mid 1400's. Love your video! So interesting to hear of other Dundee's around the world! Thank you! Oh and just a wee side note,the number of this episode (382) is strangely similar to the Dundee Scotland phone dialling code(01382) ❤

    I know Dundee (not terribly well, but have been there several times for all sorts of things, and know people from the area) but I had no idea just how extensive the museum at Talana Hill was. Wow!
    They do a battle reenactment every year. Actually I think it might be more Zulu War related (or they do both), because the guys who get to be "British" wear the old redcoats. It's quite a civic-minded town, as you noticed. (I know some of the people who provide the propulsion for said civic mindedness. It doesn't just happen by accident. You have to make it happen, and they do.)

      Talana is an incredible facility. The Tourism Office of the town has to be commended for making it so easy for first-time visitors like us to find historical landmarks in town. 🚙🏛️💒

    Your best video....Bloedrivier is like holy ground for the Afrikaners, same as Amujuba and Magersfontein. A few men died in battle a couple days later in the Battle of the White Umfolozi....my ggg grandfather Lukas M Jansen van Rensburg was one of the burgers, he was also a Vegkop -, Mosega -, and Kapain veteren against Mzilikatse. His grave near Leeudoringstad

    Great video. The first full-feature South African film was the historical melodrama "De Voortrekkers" (1916). I remember years ago hearing at a lecture that the local people were enlisted as extras for the filming of the attack on the wagen lager. Tthe only problem was that they charged for real and the crew and others had to bolt for their lives. Next time round, they used urban people and police for the retake.🤣
