- Join me on a tour of Dundonian delights as I explore the attractions both well and not so well-known! We'll visit ships, museums, statues, football stadiums and a whole lot more. Why not come along and see what Scotland's 4th largest city has to offer.
Local legend Eric Gudmunsen has generously allowed me to use his music for this video - check out his music at ericgudmunsen.com - he has a new album releasing soon too and I'll be buying it for sure!
End Credits song: 'The Dundee Fowk Sang'.

Big THANK YOU to Eric Gudmunsen for allowing to use his song in the video! Love it😁
Here here! Cheers Eric! :)
How did you get that version of the song all the ones i can find are just not that good quality
The dragon statue is about the legend of the 9 maidens.. A farmer sent his daughter to get water from the well and she never returned so he sent his next daughter and she also never returned after they had all been sent and never came back he went to the well to look for them. He found them all dead with a dragon next to the well. He ran for help and the town people chased the dragon. A guy called Martin caught up and killed the dragon. There is a stone outside Dundee in a field that is said is where the dragon fell..
The 'Baldragon' there's a carved standing stone just outside the north of the city where the beast was meant to have been slain.
Thanks so much for this! Never knew this story!
ALSO, the dragon became the symbol for the Dundee Corporation when the town had the old green buses. I grew up in Dundee in the 1960s and the dragon was on the side of all the buses before they changed to the modern blue city branding.
@@steve-marsh you were so close and never visited the Auld Tram 🚃 right next to it
32 year old Dundonian just finding this out now.
just wanted to let you know, we visited Dundee today thanks to your Dundee video! Thanks! What a great place!
Briiliant Song by Eric Gudsmunsen! Scottish and Nordic combined eh! Winderful! 😃🏴🇮🇪🙋
Absolute legend!
I've never been to Dundee, and now I must go. When I was a boy growing up in London I used to love going to look at 'Discovery' when she was moored on the Embankment by Waterloo Bridge. It's good to see her so well looked after.
That bought back memories. I found Scots ship very interesting, and well preserved. Thank you .
A fantastic tour of my hometown. Thanks very much for giving it the airing it deserves, Steve. I’m a long way from home these days, but it’s always great to see Dundee and its history in particular. Love your videos! 👌
Hey dean how are you ? 😊
Cheers Dean! You have a great place to call home :)
@@steve-marsh he is australia now steve , we grew up together on the same street in Dundee 😊
@@steve-marsh yeah he does have a great place to all home Australia not an absolute dump in dumpdee
I've been to Dundee a few times, but never actually discovered the Discovery. I've been missing out on something, so thanks for the fine video. I agree with your comments about the V&A. I visited the V&A last year when they hosted a dance club special exhibition, and although interesting enough, I felt they could have gone one step further. I felt the open spaces in the exhibition areas were used to 'pad-out' the displays, when in actual fact much more could have been included.
Yes I’ve enjoyed your Dundee videos, including the one when you had the bad luck of the fire alarm! On my visit there wasn’t even an extra exhibition on like in your one, so it was even MORE empty!
Oh this was marvelous Steve thank you! I've only ever driven through Dundee about 15 year ago, so to see your video now in February 2024 will encourage me to go back. And get a proper Dundee cake! That charity shop was a Wow! As for the donuts? If there is one smell that reminds me of the seaside it's freshly made donuts! Walton on the Naze comes to mind. 😁🏴🇮🇪🙋
These videos are always fun to watch, even though I’m from Scotland it makes me very proud and you are class at showing all these amazing places. Hope to see you up in Aberdeen at some point
What I can tell you is that the Pret in Aberdeen is listed as being shut on a Saturday, which it isn't....
And you've also got the Gregg's at the bus station which does fine 7am (ish)food...
For those that have a Pret subscription and a fondness for Gregg's...🤔😉😊
Thanks so much! An Aberdeen video is in the planning stages right now :)
Love it Michelle! :D
Thanks a lot, i am international student who living here about 5 months, but never know about these beautiful sights which u showed in ur video, now m aware about these places and sure visit soon. Thanks again.
Thanks Teena! I hope you're having a wonderful time in Scotland! I am actually thinking to make a 'Part Two' to this one, so much to see in Dundee :)
Beautiful ship Steve
Dundee - home of flax, Beano, William McGonagall's dreadful poetry and Marmalade. Thanks for a really interesting look around, Steve; it's a "must visit" city. And I agree with your comment on the V&A, so many museums & galleries around the world devote far too much to restaurants and cafe's than to their core business; exhibits.
Thanks for coming along :) So true re the V&A!!!
For a very short time nice exhibition Steve 👌
Beautiful old ship,good video
Another wonderful video. Dundee looks really charming so thanks for taking us along!
Thanks Heather! It's a wee bit scruffy around the edges as a city, but once you scratch the surface it's a wonderful place!
Steve,
Thanks for taking us along to showcase another outstanding Scottish city! Great video!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it :)
I studied abroad in Dundee from 1996-1997--it's one of my five favorite cities on the planet and not (just) for sentimental reasons. Thanks for this video and I can't wait for part two!
Thanks Sarah! Yes - a part two DEFO happening sometime :)
Fantastic video! Great Song !
Love these videos Steve. I’ve been living abroad for over a year now and your videos transport me home. Thank you for your efforts❤️
Thanks so much an absolute pleasure to bring you home on these wee adventures :)
I was at the V&A pre pandemic and was similarly disappointed. You enter to a big massive open central space and then the exhibitions area in contrast just seems so small.
So true! Glad it's not just me!
Loved it. I visited Discovery when it was moored on the Thames in London many moons ago. It looks in better shape now. Well done Dundee.
I didn't even realise it used to live there! Been watching so much online about its history since I visited :)
the charity shop on reform street used to be specsavers and when they moved in they discovered that amazing ceiling you see in the video.
Imagine covering up that ceiling!!!
@@M124M i think it was.
Steve you have a great Scottish accent I love it
I love Steve’s pronunciation of getting some fud and look at this old hoose!
I've been to Dundee a lot back in the 80's. It was train station then Dens park or Tannadice. My last visit 4 years back (football again) surprised me. It looked so different and this vlog has left me very surprised. Isn't it a great city and worth a good visit. Love it and ANOTHER Steve Marsh day trip I'll be taking. Totally surprised by this city.
Aye, it's still a wee bit rough around the edges, but what a transformation from not so long ago!
Hi Steve, Thank you as always for your videos. I have been to Dundee a couple of times but now feel like I haven't lol another trip brewing. Steve you are one of scotlands best kept secrets it's like having your own tour guide of our beautiful country.
It's a pleasure watching thanks again.
Brian - thank you SO much! :)
Another interesting video Steve. I fully agree with you about the V&A museum, very impressive outside and a real disappointment inside. I did spot one thing inside though that gave me a possible topic for a future video from you, The Falkirk Wheel and a wee wander along the canal to the Kelpie's maybe. Two incredible structures that are pretty close together and are incredible structures. Stay safe mate.
In think you mean The Kelpies, but I'm sure it was just a typo. An excellent suggestion by the way!
Thank you Sheena, you are correct I did mean Kelpie's but did not read it through.Take care.
Fantastic idea to combine the 2 as a single video with a wander in-between! In my head now, will try to do it soon on a sunny day :)
As also as a Dundonian im proud of this city.... In someplaces
Steve, I’m late in watching this (August 2024) but I’m starting to plan a trip to Scotland next summer. Might sound strange to some but I’m thinking of staying in Dundee for a few days (instead of Edinburgh) as a base for day trips to St. Andrews and Glamis Castle (Queen Mother’s former home) and also see the sights you’ve shown in Dundee. I visited Edinburgh last year and it’s beautiful but hotels are SO expensive. I’ll also stay in Glasgow and Inverness and travel around by train and bus. Thanks to you for all your wonderful videos - and thanks to Scott also for his great videos, too.
Nice video and love this song from Eric . Such a talented guy.
Cheers! I was so privileged to be able to use Eric's song on this!
Steve i am an old man who left glasgow 50+ years ago , i simply love your work its good to see the old country , i would love you to do one in Glasgow
i know you done one at kelvin grove which i enjoyed , i was a welder in Yarrows for a few years before i left and the city has changed so much over the years , a city i love apart from the so called football divide , i like sport but why cant people live and let live , sorry Steve going on now , Just thought it would be good to see more of the city i was born in and thank you so much for the work you do , i am ashamed to say never been too Dundee but enjoyed seeing it and like you Loved the Broons lol , once again thank you
Hi Jim, I enjoy Steve's videos too! I get to see so many places and love the journeys! My Mum also worked in Yarrows, in the Ambulance Room, from the mid 1970's!
Cheers Jim! I am very keen on a Glasgow video, it's just so difficult though as that city is jam packed full of amazing!!! But you are so right, it's a great subject matter for this year and I promise I'll bring you something. Thanks so much, aw the best to you!
Thanks for this video, Steve! From an American who has only been to Edinburgh, once...but absolutely adored it...we love your videos, you've really helped us plan for future visits. We cannot wait to come back! You and Alicja's trip to Orkney is probably our very favorite of your videos, although we have enjoyed them all, and we re-watch many of them! Best wishes to you both for a lovely 2022, and thank you again. This is the absolute best of CZcams, as far as we're concerned. (and we always chat with the cats we see on our travels, also!)
Awww thanks SO much, and all the best with getting over here again soon :) We can't wait for the weather to improve a bit and get out to explore more, we loved Orkney too but the plan is to do a couple of big trips to Skye and Shetland too! Thanks again for your support of the channel from us both :)
Oh wow, what a great little city. You're making our list of places to visit even longer Steve! Think I'll have to start buying lottery tickets. Beautiful and interesting little museums. Brent would love those ships! Thanks for these wonderful tours, we learn so much. Oh, I miss the days when I could eat warm donuts. Looking forward to your next adventure! 😁
Ahhhh can still taste the wonderful donuts! The ships were incredible, and I've been watching so many documentaries about their history ever since!
LOL love the statues of Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx - reminds me of the comics we used to read when we were kids. Also, coming from a naval family, I would love to visit HMS Unicorn one day, it looks amazing!
Come on, let's rake in those 30K subs for Steve asap. Thank you for another wonderful video Steve, such a delight to see these places through your lens.
Thanks so much! Your help getting me to that milestone is super-appreciated!
Really enjoyed that video Steve very surprised looks like they’re plenty to do in Dundee cheers.🍺🍺👍
Cheers Derek - and so much I missed too! :)
A new post. Thanks I needed that today. It's been a shit day. Hope you are well and staying warm...
Glad it helped :) Aw the best to you!
Thank you for another fascinating tour of a Scottish city. Makes me want to take another trip up north. concentrating on the cities rather than the coast and the sea, as I did in the 1980's.
I was taken on a visit to the "Discovery" as a boy in the 1950's when she was still moored alongside the Thames Embankment, and your video brought it all back. I particularly remember all the marvellous wooden panelling in the living quarters, which must have gone a little way towards insulating the ship in those Polar regions. More comfortable than the "Unicorn", that's for sure! Imagine negotiating those low decks just by the light of lanterns and tallow candles, as one would have to have done in the days of sail. There is some truth in that the population's average height was a little shorter back in those days, but many seamen were quite tall. I remember from my visits to HMS "Victory" in Portsmouth that her gunrooms and below decks are equally as " low headroom" and I think it's more to do with Naval architecture and the need to create the most effective "broadside" array of gunnery, while keeping the ship's freeboard to a minimum that leads to the cramped conditions. At action stations, even the captain's quarters would be cleared for action, and small "stern chaser"cannon mounted to fire through apertures in the ornate windows of the stern, which I believe were known as "gingerbreads". The streets that you passed through on your way to visit the "Unicorn" looked as it they had their own history to tell.
I understand that Dundee's fortunes were made from whaling, jute import, and the manufacture of "sweeties", including Keillor's Marmalade and obviously Dundee cake! I remember that in my decades of working in advertising press production, I dispatched much "copy" to the ornate D.C. Thomson offices in 185 Fleet Street, which I believe was the last journalistic office still operating in that famous street before it closed some years ago. I used to get the Hulton "Eagle" comic whose heroes were Dan Dare, and Luck of the Legion, but I often borrowed my mates' copies of the "Beano" and "DandY" at school.
The crossing of the Tay Bridge by that footway, high over the water, with streams of traffic hurtling by on either side doesn't appeal to me at all, and of course there's the tragic history of the first railway bridge across the Tay to be reminded of.
What a pity that the V&A failed to live up to your expectations, perhaps a case of the packaging being more impressive than the contents! The building is certainly an amazing piece of modern architecture, and I have to say that its more traditionally housed counterpart in Kensington is one of my favourite London museums.
Thanks again for taking us on another of your always very original excursions.
Fantastic comments as always Hugh! You really are reminded though on those old ships how they were built 100% for warfare over welfare! I couldn't stop imagining how it would have been as I walked around. I am sad I didn't have more time to explore the Discovery though, both ship and museum as they looked so good and I've been watching a good few documentaries on her voyages since.
@@steve-marsh "Scott of the Antarctic", together with the Titanic tragedy were two episodes which occurred in my Mother's early years, and made a great impression on her, as she talked a lot about hem to me when I was a boy. Peter Scott, the wildlife artist and son of the explorer was the guest of honour when my primary school was officially re-opened in 1955, after we'd moved into the new buildings from the "huts" we'd previously occupied.
Back in the 1980s, I dropped my motorbike on some gravel. Dundee had the nearest garage and they fixed the broken indicator there and then. Good people so why haven’t I been back? After seeing your video, that’s the question I need to answer. BTW, if I remember Drachinifel correctly, one of the reasons for having low decks in warships was to keep the centre of gravity down. Vasa had taller decks for improved comfort for lofty Scandinavians and she capsized first time out.
Fantastic info! Cheers for that - I really love the design of these old ships!
I grew bilingually in Germany and went to a normal local Junior school, so wasn't taught English. To my mum's horror she found me trying to teach myself to read English through Oor Wullie annuals, so good too see him flying dragons theses days! :D
Ach, jings, help ma boab! :D Brilliant Duncan! :)
Your films are always a delight. You deserve many more viewers. I once went to Dundee and thoroughly enjoyed it. At the time all cash machines bearing the NCR label were made/assembled there.
Thanks so much Nicole! Really appreciate it :) and a fantastic wee nugget of info as well :)
Well done Steve & Alicja and a big Hi from NZ. My Scottish Uncle took me there (sadly, quite a few years ago now) where with my cousin we had a great day in Dundee, with a lot of the time spent on RRS Discovery. The many museums and exhibits of Scotland are the best in the world. I hope you get to the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther one day, I went back twice it was so good, (10 out of 10 for authenticity and feeling of belonging). Hopefully the world returns to some sort of normal, where safe and unrestricted travel allows one to return. Keep up the great Videos !
What a great shout on Anstruther Andy, cheers! Added to the list now :) And a big hi right back at you from us both!
just want to say Steve i have autism and suffer from depression and it is always a pleasure when u upload really brightens and helps me a lot love from Manchester
Thank you so much for the kind comment! And comments like this really spur me on to get out there and do more :) all the best to you!
🤔🤨....I've been to Dundee a few times and yet you've made it seem more interesting than it has any right to be!😉
Not even a mention of Sir Clive Sinclair...
Gnasher, Dennis and some cow pie please...
Yes, the first time I went was for the V&A, yes I did leave disappointed...
Days out is a good tip. Thanks 👍
The Apex is good, the Malmaison not so much...
Finally, the quality of your content is wonderful and improving exponentially. It must take a lot of time, effort and passion...
p.s... I still prefer Inverness though, (not weekends) and who wants to go to Perth!😊
Haha I'll need to go to Perth now and give it a chance :) Thanks so much by the way Michelle, I can't even tell you how long these take to put together, so truly appreciate the comments!
What a wonderful town, as you say, packed with history. Thank you for the journey.
Looks like a wonderful City Steve..... Have you been watching Michel Portillo on his train journey round Scotland ... It is very good.. you might pick up some ideas of places to go.... :-))))
I haven't, but my dad keeps me up-to-speed on the series, really want to watch it! :)
Think I have been looking at your videos for just over two weeks now and I am knocked out, Man. Have just embarked upon watching every one from the the first on. Enjoying every moment of it too.. Have never rated Dundee that much (my apologies to all Dundonians). You have changed my mind and I am barely half way through the video. Thank you Steve and Alicia for some real treats.
That was great Steve. It's a long time since I've been to Dundee. I used to go in the late 70's early 80's & I did think it was an attractive city at that time. I went later after returning to Scotland in 1991 & thought it was even more attractive; the area by the water was being more developed. Your video encourages me to want to visit Dundee again; it now looks like a beautiful city & full of interest for me. The ships look very interesting. I wonder if the Unicorn was once docked at Irvine in not very good shape, & is that where the Irvine ship ended up & is now an interesting museum? I may be way off track here. I remember the statue of Desperate Dan. Your room looked well worth the money!
If you return to Dundee try to see Claypotts Castle; it's quaint, & I believe it's up a hill somewhere. And Broughty Ferry is worth a visit; there is an interesting castle there too. Thanks for that Steve.
Thanks Robert! I'm a Dundee convert for sure, for me it was a lot cooler than I remember. Broughty Ferry was on the list of things to do for sure but I just ran out of time (and energy!) Great city though and definitely under appreciated in my opinion. And I believe this is the sunniest part of Scotland as well!
Brilliant! I'm from Belfast. But my Son has lived in Dundee for around a Decade. Him and his Uni Grad Mates have their own Software Company. 'PUNY ASTRONAUT'. Their Debut Game 'SKYE' Will be released on Nintendo Switch... 22/23. So Thank you, Dundee. I'll return very soon. P.S I love Edinburgh, too. I've visited 6 times! Since November 2021.
Keep up the Great Work, Sir...O
Fantastic! I'll be looking out for their game and wish them the best of luck!
awesome video still miss my Dundee have fond memories growing up there left when i was 16 and now 67 and still miss it thanks for the video post
Glad you enjoyed it John - a Part Two to come for sure. Have you watched Jag Betty's videos? I swear, he's my favourite CZcamsr! :)
I remember being at my cousins wedding reception on the unicorn I don’t know if they still do it these days because that was about 30 years ago but I remember the older ones struggling to get up and down the top deck under the influence of a few shandy’s 😂
Always look forward to your videos. You take me places I could never go on my own, so, again, thank you.
Always a pleasure Doris, thank you :)
Thanks a lot for the intersting trip. Our daughter is workinginterestin in Dundee since september 2023, so we try to get some information of the city. Hello from France !
Just home from a week in Scotland. Decided to spend 2 days in Dundee after watching your video as had never been before and never even thought about visiting. Had a great time. Discovery, Unicorn , walked to Dundee Law , McManus, V&A. And perfect weather. Thanks for the info!
Was in Dundee 2018. I absolutely loved the new Museum. The architecture of the V&A was inspiring. Our B&B accommodation was excellent, run by a retired university professor. We really enjoyed our visit.
Been through Dundee loads of times but never stopped off there. Looks like it's worth doing. Another comment mentions the Castle Museum in York with 2 streets exhibited there. Great! Steve York is a fab city, you should go there, take Alicja with you!
I had a laugh when you were on HMS Unicorn, I'm a 5ft shortie, so I'd have been ok. 🤣
Haha trust me, you'd struggle there too! :) Oh, agreed - York is fantastic - Alicja has seen so little of England and really want to spend some time there this year. York would be a perfect place to start!
Love watching these vids with a bottle of red wine. I've driven most of Scotland but never stopped to visit these places.love it.👍
Thanks so much mate! I'm the same - discovering new places I've driven past all the time! :)
Thank you Steve I enjoyed your tour of Dundee, my 2x grandfather Robertson Urquhart McGregor emigrated to Australia back in the 1840s.
From what I saw I must agree with you about the V&A Steve, nice to have an honest opinion on something that costs millions of pounds but is not used to its full potential..
Thanks mate..
Cheers Thomas - and apparently they have a mountain of exhibits in the vault - such a shame there is so little on display.

I absolutely love Shackleton and Hurley. Thank you. If I ever get back to Scotland one it will be a must. 🏴🇦🇺
You must visit HMS Victory at Portsmouth. It’s really interesting and worth a visit.
Just been on the Unicorn web page. Worth a glance for the history of Frigate rigging. Started life with 3, but down to 1 and the foc’sle when it arrived in Aberdeen. Still think it’s a great video. Thanks. Berwyn
Great Video. The video tour of UNICORN was amazing!
Thanks so much, it's an often forgotten ship being tucked away round the corner from everything else

Thanks Gwendolyn! Those ships are well worth a visit! I've been watching documentaries on their history ever since! :)
Another great video, we went to the V and A museum a year ago and were disappointed. We actually stumbled across the McManus museum and thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Cheers Fiona! Aye, the V&A is so famous, but apart from the building itself, I'm not sure why...
Agree with you on the McManus and hot fresh donuts. 😂 great wander around Dundee. Keep safe and well.👍
Cheers Clive! The donuts well made up for the disappointment :)
So glad you went back to Dundee, it was definitely worth anther visit.i 100% agree with you about the McManus, an excellent museum, beautifully refurbished with some of the best taxidermy I have ever seen. I must say my heart always sinks when I find put people have been to Dundee and not gone to the McManus, a real treat missed. I will definitely go to the Unicorn next time I'm there, I've only seen it from the outside but the inside deserves a look. Thanks again for showcasing Dundee. I'm off to Perth next month, another lovely and underrated Scottish city in my opinion, I'll pop in to Tim Hortons and get a few timbits while I'm there.
I need to give Perth a chance too - maybe a future video, getting higher up the list as well as a Timmys location :) I loved the wee pigeon in the McManus from the Second World War :)
A great video here and just wanted to say that I have recently discovered your videos Steve and let me tell you they definitely do not disappoint! You’ve just earned a new subscriber! Keep up the great content bud! 😃👍
Ryan, welcome aboard and thank you so much for the support! Every one of you who press 'subscribe' make a massive difference to getting my videos out there via the mysterious CZcams algorithm, so appreciate it massively! Hopefully more videos on the way soon...

Guy I was in Dundee a month ago, but I didn´t see a lot of things that you showed in this video.
Thanks
Thank you for this video, my Grandparents were from Dundee, and according to my late mother, her great uncle was one of the crew members that went on that boat to the Antartic
Thank you so much.
You're welcome!
Steve I was so excited to visit the V&A with my daughter and that view of the building is stunning as you drive over the bridge. We got inside and thought "is that it!". I was speaking to a friend recently who is a celebrity antiques specialist and she said the same thing and indeed commented on all the amazing stuff the V&A have in their vaults and why was this not displayed. Maybe it will improve in time. We visited the gallery in Aarhus a few weeks later and that is how it should be done!!!
I'm so glad it's not just me! It was a strange experience as my expectations were sky high! It's such a shame to have 90% hidden away in vaults when the place is lying empty!
What a magnificent video that was Steve, to cap it off with a wonderful song. Cheers
Was so happy to be given permission to use the song :)
Another good video Steve thank you. My wife loved it, as she is from Dundee. I have taken her home many times so I know City very well. I always look out for Eric, what an amazing singer & musician. Do you remember, on the comics of DC Thomson, sometimes sweets would be stuck on the front cover. Well Debbie worked in the bindery of DC Thomson & it was part of job to stick them on, any left over she would take home & give them to the kids in her street!
That is so cool Stuart! Pass on my thanks to Debbie for her part in my childhood memories :)
Great Video & agree about the V&A ( style over substance)
Other places to visit include the Verdant Works,Camperdown Park and Broughty Ferry
What a fine walk down memory lane. I too loved the day trip I took to Dundee when on a layover in Edinburgh. That was back when weekend trains were packed and I had to stand the whole back to Haymarket. I concur in that the V&A was a yawn while the Discovery Exhibition was amazing (and I only popped in to kill time before the next train!). Cheers for bringing us fine work.
Glad it wasn't only me with disappointment about the V&A! Cheers mate
Thanks for showing Dundee as great place to visit, I worked on Discovery for 15 years, mostly working on the rigging so I've been up those masts many times, good to see she's looking so well mentained. I lived in Newport across the Tay then, I cycled to work across the road bridge, I thought it the best commute going, the sunrise and sunsets from the bridge can be amazing. I live abroad now since I retired 15 years ago, so thanks for the memories.
Cheers Jim! Wow what a job you had!!! Thanks so much for keeping Discovery in such great shape :)
Despite being a Fifer I’ve worked out of Dundee a long long time. Let’s say the bridge home is good 😂 tbf I love the Mills Observatory on Balgay hill to the west of the Law. You still produce good videos Steve, thanks. 9/10 - you know why lol
Haha indeed I do! :D Cheers John!
I have seen Discovery Steve but a lot of my memory has discarded it so thanks for reminding me. As for HMS Unicorn, I have never seen it, so thanks... and def for the '3d' tour in which you caught the whole ship in all its past and hopefully future glory. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Thomas! I've been watching documentaries on the ships ever since and already want to go back!
Interesting to see the hometown from a visitor's perspective, good presenting👏
Cheers Rory! Already planning a 'Part Two' to this one - so much to see, so much I missed!
What a beautiful place. We’ve never visited. What a stunning day you had for it too. Loved the old ship and the Ships cat!!! 🍻
Totally! Was so lucky with the weather, but then I read they have the best weather in Scotland! I need to go back for a part two!
When I visited the V&A, I also felt that, for a museum, the building itself was "half the show" (nevertheless, another good video tour, thanks 👍).
I really enjoy your city/town walk-arounds Steve and you found a mosaic commemorating one of my ancestors, Grissel Jaffray 🙂. I'm not too sure I'd be welcome there 😂. What are the chances of an Aberdeen tour in the near future? Grissel's home city and the seat of Jaffray power in the 1600s.
Wow! Thanks so much, but now I feel even MORE embarrassed about my pronunciation! An Aberdeen tour is in early planning stages, it will definitely happen in some form this year :)
Kev Jaffray
Many years ago my friend had a pub in Dundee called Grissel Jaffrays :)
Thanks again Steve for an interesting take on Dundee...still missing Scotland so keep them coming....CHEERS...A&A from WA
Cheers guys! Aw the best!
Smashing that Steve. My wife and I stayed in Dundee about 15-16 years ago and there wasn't much to see then to be honest, although it was fab to use as a base to tour Angus and Tayside. The city looks transformed now though. It's amazing how a bit of art and culture can lift a place. It is almost unrecognisable now and we'll have to have an overnighter there again someday. Thanks for the vid 👍
So true mate, Dundee has seen a good bit of investment and has become a must-visit city! And the area around Dundee is also fantastic - think I've heard it's the sunniest place in Scotland too!
Really interesting vid Steve & love Erics song! I hope they look after the Unicorn, those timbers looked well dodge, beautiful ship.
A wonderful walk around this magnificent city thank you and stay safe, cheers.
Cheers Simon! It sure is an under appreciated city, so glad I gave it a look :)
Thank you Steve from Florida USA. I'd be excited to visit the McManus and the Discovery
Glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm glad to say there are plans to redevelop and especially preserve the Unicorn and North Carr lightships (red lottery labelled one) Plans are apparently to build a visitor exhibition space for the Unicorn, similar slightly to the Discovery. I used to be a volunteer at that charity shop and at different points it was a bank, a sweet shop and a couple of different things before the charity took it over.
Thanks so much for the awesome comment and great news!
That building is ridiculously beautiful
Thanks for that one. I've only spent time in Dundee once and that was in 1988. I had to attend some function at some assembly hall or other. It happened to be match day as well. I think The Rangers were in town. But the streets were full of punters but I'm certain that, in light of recent violence, there were just as many police on the streets.
I actually stayed with friends in Arbroath and saw the abbey there first at night. That was memorable.
Cheers Derek - I'm sure you'd barely recognise bits of Dundee now vs 1988, but it's looking pretty good, if a bit shady around the edges. Arbroath will feature on a video soon I hope!
@@steve-marsh oooo excellent! I also love Pitlochry, Moulin and the Edradour Distillery. Ha! Aberfeldy is nice too. I'm getting my requests in.
Totally agree on the V&A glorified gift shop/cafe. Much preferred the mcmanus.
Here here! Glad it's not just me!
