- Watch more Roadkill Extra on Motor Trend On Demand: bit.ly/2tHCpt0 In December 2017, California was ravaged by wildfires that cost some lives and many homes. While the loss is insignificant in comparison, Roadkill Garage host Steve Dulcich had a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda that burned while stored at a friend’s house. In this Roadkill Extra, David Freiburger shows you just how bad the damage is-and isn’t-and reveals how the guys will bring it back to life as the BBQuda on an upcoming episode of Roadkill Garage.
As you watch, cruise over to Facebook.com/RoadkillShow, follow us, and watch for future posts asking for your questions to be answered on the Q&A sessions that are posted every Friday on Roadkill Extra Powered by Dodge. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Holy shit he's wearing pants and shoes, its going to get wild on roadkill
Fred Leparski yeah a roadkill 1st
Fred Leparski He looks half civilized like Gilligan.
what if he starts wearing button downs and khakis???
(deep voice) "Shit... just got real."
Fred Leparski right 32 degrees and he'll still be wearing shorts and sandals.
Wow! I can't wait for this episode because my uncle had a beautiful plum crazy 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback,he had a house fire he got trapped in the passed away, and the car got absolutely toasted, glad to see this one get restored.
HELLCUDA! It's gone to hell and back. I know you've worked with a hellcat engine, but you technically never installed one. It's perfect
Noah Snyder oh yeah that's right they never put it in hmmmm I'd love to see it with a hell cat hemi
Noah Snyder
Great idea.
Very original idea. Smh
Hell’a’Cuda
That is the exact engine that came to my mind and I don’t put it past them since they technically did not do it themselves, would absolutely love to see that go in
The exterior looks cool as it is! I'd shoot it with clear coat, then completely resto the interior and exterior trim pieces
Would it be redundant to put it on a rotisserie?
RMphy89 lol
RMphy89
That took about three seconds, but I got it. It was early Saturday morning. I'm still laughing.
Make the trunk a bbq grill.
Eric Lundy route the exhaust into the trunk and you've got yourself a fine BBQ smoker.
Putting the car on a rotisserie would indeed be redundant. It's already been well and truly grilled.
weaker sheet metal seem like a good excuse for a roll cage ;)
So awesome. I look forward to seeing this thing running.
I love the look of the back bumper, the surf blue and burnt textures look super nice together.
Oh man can't wait to see this project....
I would definitely be scrutinising that chassis, especially the front dumb irons and any suspension mounting points to see just how hot they got. Even though it's just plain old mild steel, the sort of temperature needed to melt that aluminium (650-700C) will certainly have affected it to some degree, making it tougher and more ductile, with less strength and hardness as a result. A crash or hard impact will crumple it up much worse than the same impact on an unburned car.
A replacement chassis wouldn't be a bad shout, and I'd personally want to cage the thing or at least brace the footwells and sills to prevent ingress of solid objects should it all go wrong.
Fire damaged cars can certainly live again, but most end up having new chassis' or being spaceframed for strength and safety.
Waxoyl or just plain satin clearcoat would look really cool on this. A 'rat look' car that has actually _earned_ the patina it has!
As the comment below says, Australian 'Barra' engine. It's punny and can be boosted to oblivion.
I am surprised I am not seeing more comments on this. I wouldn't much trust the metal on that unless it gets heat treated. I would certainly not want it on the road. I know they have driven some rust buckets, but that whole car is weakened to some extent, except for maybe the back passenger side...
Especially when he poked the hood, and said all the metal felt weird, that should be a sign. Its possible the underside of the car, mainly the frame, might have been shielded to some extent, but if the inside of the car was on fire, I wouldn't trust seats bolted to that floorpan.
Not sure on these cars whether they're monocoque or body-on-chassis, but I assumed the latter.
I wouldn't trust a fire damaged monocoque as far as I could throw it, but a separate chassis can be replaced and and the body should be fine. I agree seats, belt mounts and suchforth should be braced though. Especially as Roadkill aren't known for gentle driving techniques...
They are not body on chassis, and he did say he'd put on frame connectors. Judging by his finally wearing pants, the air temp during the vid must not have been all that warm. Maybe in direct sunlight, that "bottom of the oil can" thinness to the hood may make for some distortion when the metal tries to expand in the heat. I don't mean the hood, so much as that roof is structural. Like that Monte Carlo they killed, they may need a trip to the roundy-round race car store, and get a simple wiring harness and other circle track items to get this car back on the road. There's a video where they save one of these early 'cudas from a junkyard.
Yikes, will that even take the load of the engine weight?
CLear it clear it clear it!!!!
You guys must do this project! Keeps the burned look. It's so cool. It will make it more unique than it ever would have been originally. And that's saying a lot!!
That's a very cool project idea. I am excited to see it happen.
There have been a few burnt cars that I have seen on videos and everyone asks the same question, is the metal junk after a fire? I would really like to know the answer to that question.
I don't care what anyone say's the first and second gen Barracuda's are cool cars and the first gens with the big glass window is awesome I would own one in a heartbeat
79tazman Would you please give my channel a Subscribe I have plenty of great videos including Finnegan making a pass at dragweek in Blasphemi
I think I can do that man
You guys should check out Regular Car Reviews of the Cuda
Same here bad ass cars
Yeah they are, I was gonna get one, 6 cylinder
I had a 1966 formula S and a 1967 convertible and wish I still had em both. They get in your blood and your soul and can never get em out and your never the same again.
Can’t wait to see the resurrection!!!
my parents bought a 64' the moment it hit the showroom floor. I remember riding in the back looking at the sky..... cant wait to see this one finished!
I want this to be an actual restoration
tractor lad farming A burnt car is not worth the effort. The body strenght suffers from the heat and the heat can also warp the frame. Not safe.
drift missile
2redneck Okay then.
2redneck Why do you have to be so mad? Be nice instead :) And yes, you have a great point but I also think the metal lose it's stength when it's heated up with burning fire. Now when I read what you said I changed my mind a bit though. I still think metal lose it's strenght when getting torched by fire though. Don't get mad at me if I'm wrong, I just know what I've heard and read :)
2redneck Admittedly i should've checked my sources or done more research. The thing about the heat weakening the structural integrity of a car i heard from another car channel rescuing a Mustang burnt in a carage fire.
Edit: then again, the carage somewhat droppimg down on the car was the leading cause of the physical damage.
Drop a ford barra engine in it from an aussie falcon to make it a barra-cuda!
groan
Man my house burned down an durned up the front end of my 1972 custom 10 longbed pic up an i was lucky to walk away with not too major damage to it minor fire damage to the engine bay an my windshield an grill an front right tire/brake line an house was insured it makes me happy to see that they are not going to let the car die it deserves to be completely repaired i really do love road kill its the only car show i watch, i used to watch gears but that show was junk compared to roadkill!! Good job guys
Had '68 when I was teenager in the 80's. mine was in not so good condition but that car was still awesome. Love Barracudas.
COMPLLLLLETELY BBQ'D.
As said by Fry-burger. =)
Put an Aussie 'Barra' turbo 4 litre six in it. Barra-Cuda 🇦🇺🇺🇸🍻
gottaloveit66 I think you might be on to something. 🤔
Cool idea
This needs to be done!!
The barra is a 4 litre straight six. not a four banger...
Barra's are good for lots and lots of power. Check out Mighty Car Mods transformer special
ya you could make that look like a mad max vehicle so fast. very sick
Love the name, nice pick thanks for the sneak peak!
I am with Dulcich resto time!!!!
CrispyCuda'
"Hemi Under Rust"
Rear engine, of course.
My cousin has a 67 with a matching numbers 440. It had a 273 with a 727 in it until his tow truck shop caught on fire with the car in the garage and a I beam fell on it and crushed it. So he had it all fixed and put the 440 in it. I love these thing's, can't wait to see some video's of it.
Id Love to see this running!
Put a Demon engine in it, since it's been to Hell and back!!!
I'd be worried about the altered grain structure/structural integrity of the frame from all that heat and probably a very slow cool. Any thoughts on how to approach that? or perhaps safer to swap it?
Judging by how the body was 'annealed' I guess the sheet metal wasn't too bad so I would think the frame rails were minimally affected if at all. It depends if they have been thinned out or rotted badly. To alter the frame that much the sheet metal would be totally gone. Obviously unknown unless we see the car personally. I'd cage it and strengthen the frame anyway even if it didn't suffer a fire.
Dave Robson. It's unibody, it doesn't have a full frame.
That's worrying. I guess it depends on whether the Cuda used mild steel or whether it had any heat-treated components in it. I don't know Cudas but I know my 90s Nissan has a few high-strength steel panels in the body that the manual says you'll screw up if you try to weld them with a torch. I'm not sure when that sort of thing started.
I totally dig the plan for this car i'll be looking forward to seeing the finished product
My sister has one from her father that passed away. Kick ass car. I’m sure u guys will make that thing a beast once again.
Freiburger, whatever happened to the Ford F350 tow truck you guys drove home from Colorado?
he sold it to one of Hot Rod Magazine writers (editors)
he drives it daily
Maxey u mean the chevy 3500 tow rig?
Keaton Scarlott No, Cereal Killer already answered. It was a 2wd Ford F-350 that was converted to 4wd.
The truck is called *"Harry-Tow"* and it was a Ford.
Keaton Scarlott you might be thinking of the flat bed, finnegan owns that.
Nooooo put the BBQuda in the regular Roadkill episode
Hector Jacques Giovani Lima Santos he said it would be in an episode
Yeah, ill never see it. I refuse to pay for the crap... Matter of fact, at this point theyre kinda lucky I watch the free shit
Ryan Adam butthurt much?
There's too much work for a Roadkill episode. A lot of parts need to be sourced before they can even start on it.
I don’t pay for this. If it isn’t free, I don’t need to see it.
Thats one coooool car! Looks like mad max. Big thumbs up for this realy cool car and hope you guys have lots of fun to build it up again 👍👍👍👍👍
You were right! My wife drove our a red '67 Fastback Formula S with a 273 Commando!. But it also had 340 intake and exhaust a Purple cam and 8 3/4 sure-grip rear. That things a mess. Bless you.
Maybe acid dip the body like the Hurst cars? To clean it up.
Clear the exterior. Then install full interior, windows, and all new exterior trim.
JeepCollector91 Would you Please give my channel a Subscribe im working on building up a channel with great racing and burnout videos
I vote for a restoration. Dulcich knows what's up... it's a Cuda, some things shouldn't be turned into a rat rod.
Guys at Roadkill - I don't know if you've looked into this but heat changes metal's mechanical properties. It can make it soft or brittle and certainly weaker without obvious signs. I STRONGLY recommend that you make sure the frame and body is inspected metallurgically to see if you can safely drive it again.
Love this vid
Is the engine plan to fut a firepower in it
Hah! Well they've definitely never done a first-gen hemi before, so that's possible!
steam engine
Clear coat the sheet metal but restore everything else back to factory, undercarriage, interior grills trim etc.
Exactly my thoughts! *Do it* guys.
Hey guys make it slow-mikl911
Yeah, I gotta make that caveat.... suspension and running gear.... not so stock please. lol
Fair enough, the General mayhem has been done, up grade the suspension put a 1000 hp motor in it but put a real interior in it and leave the exterior metal alone..
Fire damage will rust from inside the metal out. a rust remover made with phosphoric acid is the only way to save it from dissolving into a pile of rust
A few years ago, when a fire rolled through here in Colorado, a lot of cars ended up like this. One car, I think it was a Galaxy convertible, got hit in a cool way. The entire temporary shed it was in burned to the ground but the car was almost untouched. The back of the top had a bit of charring or smoke damage on it but otherwise it was safe. I don't know if it got fixed, but I personally wouldn't have fixed it. That damage just became a major part of the cars story! I always found stuff like this really cool.
Bring her back to life....awesooooome! 👍👌🤘
why not paint clear and let the name
You mean clear coat it?
*"paint clear"*
I have the same car
i must agree with Steve on this one of restoring it.
Very cool.
Put a turbo barra in it. That would make it a 'barra cuda'.
zedex1314 yes
BARRA THE WORLD!!!!
Mother is a fan of this show.
Norman Bates bad ass name
Mother says give my racing channel a Subscribe I have plenty of nice videos for you to enjoy
Mother say's cheers
Done Subbed, Mother and I will give it a look
so creepy but so funny haha
It is awesome that you will salvage anything!
Love the idea go with it. !!!!!!
All these suggestions, but that car was probably done months ago.
Ryan Adam lol probably right
Done? This is roadkill, nothing is ever "done"
fried fish
Fish and chips! xD
@@mikaelmakinen995 Hey! They could get a California Highway Interstate Patrol cruiser engine! Then it would be Fried Fish and Chips!!
I like where your going with this!
can't wait to see it, but kinda curious about what engine you say you haven't put in a car yet...
BBQuda? Make it run on propane :)
i would not touch this car .. usually burned cars got metal as rigid as wet cardboard.. its worth nothing.. scrap price.
i bet if you jump once on the roof it caves all way down to the seats..
cut the front of and make it a BBQ. the rear can be sold as decorative like a car went tru a building.
even a minor crash would injure the driver badly because it crumble like tinfoil.
edit: well its not completely worthless.. dont know what that one taillight is worth.
lars kristensen I thought a very similar thing. It's time to make razor blades out of it.
lars kristensen dude even a mint cuda same year you probably wouldnt survive a crash over 40 theyre not like todays cars
Why would you jump on the roof?
Well just don’t jump on the roof
Hands down, the BEST car name you guys have come up with lol
absolutely just love this show and roadkill itself its my whole blue collar life of working on cars but just not for fun lol
Paint the car with BBQ grill paint!
Eric Chapman there's a CZcamsr with a Challenger like that bed lined looks good
Actually yeahhhh. BBQ paint would be sweet. And it would help against another fire!
Dump a bucket of boiled linseed oil over it and drop a Dodge V6 with dual turbos into it :-)
Agreed on the oil treatment...
Nah u can’t put no damn v6 in a muscle car. 426 hemi or a turbo 383 super commando
Treat the rust and paint it with a inexpensive paint job.
tocsa120ls it's not a Chrysler GTR 35
Fuck muscle car rules! 2J all the way!
Y'all should rebuild it and make it look good while still adding some custom touches (like the grille) and auction it off in support of the guy who lost his house
Does anyone remember that 80's commercial featuring a really jacked up '67-'69 fastback Barracuda that the Mom has to borrow, and she says: "It's like I'm driving downhill!"
barra-cuda?
I still don't understand why they don't just put them on CZcams with ads like everyone else. Don't they make a lot of money on views and merch like other channels?
Not as much as they can by charging subscription fees on their own site
They make even more this way...
It's worth the price man, lots of access to all kinds of car things.
Because if you run a channel all by yourself you get all the ad revenue. Motor Trend has to pay the camera man, sound guy, the host, video editor, etc. Ad revenue doesn't cover those expenses.
their on Demand is like 5 bucks, with like 10 shows, some exclusive, im not subbed anymore due to irl stuff but i have been, its worth the price, anyway roadkill is 1 month later then the on demand, big deal
I looked up that color you were right surf turquoise poly. I saw one 68 barracude with 2 stripes down by the bottom of the door.
I look forward to seeing you work on this car in episode 2 of this series in 2020
What if they put a big V8 diesel in it
Antoine Boutier I think they have done that with the Cadillac
Extra Wishes it was an straight-six cummins tho!
It has to be a in line six 5.9 cummins
No coyote 5.0 it its better then a heavy freaking diesel engine
Antoine Boutier no
2jz swap it
Well, they do have one now...
And apparently backing them with a PowerGlide is pretty common.
That would be... interesting
something something tarmacs and daily it
Ummm no. There are a world full of junk you can put that boat anchor in it. Leave the Mopar’s alone!
Please tell me how this unstable structure of a burnt out mess isn't junk?
Say whatever you want about the 2jz not belonging in this type of car, that we can agree on but not that it's not a good engine.
it is wild to see how the hood lost it temper, but remained straight.
It's amazing that the right rear would actually survive with all the heat that had to have surrounded the car. A restoration at this point would be fairly easy I would think due to there being almost no Bondo or lead on the vehicle and no trim parts to worry about until the rotisserie work is done.
Hellcat swap
Edward Agora Feenman he said something they’ve never swapped into something before they put a hellcat motor in the general mayhem
JimmyCasket 02 ah... True. I mean, Mopar has the 6.2 hemi, the 5.7 hemi and not shit else.
I mean, like everyone else has something new going on. Notable turbo 4 bangers or twin turbo 6s, Ford's voodoo is new to 'murican cars. Dodge has 2 motors, only difference is size and supercharger.
Don't get me wrong, I'm totally looking forward to every day of the next year and a half I have left on my charger hellcat lease, but not being entirely convinced the 6.2 will be very long lived is why it's leased and not purchased.
Doubt it, he said it's one they've never installed.
Maybe an old 440
No they did that with the motor home engine.
Any moron can keep junk as junk, these cars deserve a fresh paint job!
1991tommygun it's only Rusty once don't destroy that beautiful body that it's earned going out in a blaze of glory
not one that has an interesting back story as this one! if he cleared it and kept it looking that way, it will look good in my opinion and he will have a story to tell along with it, unlike the other people who do it just for looks
I have to agree. I myself absolutely HATE rust. I think anyone is a moron to like to keep rust around. Just paint it something, even if it's a custom leftover spray bomb camo jobbie.
CanadaBud23 what about the people that say custom rattle can camo spray paint jobs are ugly the way you look at rust it's all objective
subjective*
would be awesome if you leave the patina like that. looks rad and is really unique. also it has a good story to tell
my son and I just finished a 67 . awesome car.
I had a 1968 340 formula s Barracuda with e 4 spd.Bought it for 700 dollars running,driving and zero rust in 1985.Sure wish i still had it.
Sweet, I too like that body style Cuda... Although it's not my favorite. Awesome to know she's gonna be back on the road!!!
Make it a long term project and build it like Icon would one of their Derelict series of cars. Keep the burnt patina and make it better than new in every other way and make it a beast.
Rb swap? Barra swap? 202 red motor swap? Im excited to see what you guys are going to bring to the table! I just hope its like every other roadkill were you guys put a beautiful engine in some rusty old relic! Love the work! Keep it up!!
Hey Freiberger! Idea. roadkill should do a redemption episode, lemonade from lemons for Finnegan, taking the BBQuda to 24hrs of lemons. Mission is for Finnegan to finally have a good time driving around the track in a burnt out BBQuda! I'd love to Dulcich make some laps too. That would be Awesome! I love what you guys do, please keep doing it!
Ok. The car's patina is amazing. But check out the alignment of those grape plantings ! Those rows are perfect!
I Love roadkill
Awesome I love it. Make it happen.
I love it, extra light weight burn mod :)
68 is still my favorite year.
I would say as long as the frame is still strong,.. depending on how hot and how long it stayed hot,.. check it to ensure the heat did'nt take away any strength from the frame?
That's so mad max
That's insane I'm from Ventura it would be awsome to see you guys save that cuda it's a lol ventucky history now
Have a friend with an old Jag XK that was burnt to crisp like that, nothing but metal left. And re-did it.
I had a '67 Barracuda Formula S back in 1969 with the 273 Commando. What a great car until some old man came around an icy corner sideways and TOTALED it. Loved that car.
That is now my favorite tail light ever.
I hope they do a mad max ratrod/offroad style build with this one. The way it's covered in rust makes it look like the magnum opus from the mad max game.
Duckin love it.
I was one of the fire fighters last summer (2017) and saw a ton of burnt vehicles, it was a bad year
That’s awesome
looks awesome. Do an ICON style derelict build with it.
awesome
Go for it .
You guys need to fully restore it they are so cool looking all restored I have a 1967 barracuda and it’s being restored and it’s almost done and it’s beautiful it’s a b5 blue hand has Steelies with dog dish hubcaps so I think you guys would just restore it
on top of the typing errors its also important never to use commas or anything like that so it all just looks like bllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllluuuuuuuuuuuuuuurggeeeeeeeee and yeah gonna keep typing like this
