  • Hi all, The modification I still get the most questions on are the Method Wheels and KO2 tires and since I have about 15,000 miles on them now I though it was a good time to do an update video.
    Method Race Wheels VT spec, 5x100 bolt pattern, 15" x 7 +15 off set
    Tires are BFG KO2 215/75/15
    Weight over stock per wheel/tire is about 5lbs
    Decibel change over stock is 3 to 5

    Great videos, Rick! Thank you for all of the great information. Your videos truly helped me in taking the decision to buy a Crosstrek and to purchase the right gear for it (I already ordered BFG KO2's and black MR 502's). I will be picking up the car from the dealer in the next few days. I'm from Quebec, Canada and coincidentally, the Subaru dealership from which I bought the car is actually owned by the the father of the owner of LP Aventure, situated in Lachute, Quebec (small world). Thanks again for the great content and I look forward to checking out your future videos. Cheers!

    Love your videos. I recently moved to Arizona, Litchfield Park to be exact, and have wanted a Crosstrek FOREVER! Now that I live here, I'm waiting for the 3rd gen Crosstrek to drop so I can snatch one up. I've always been a fan of the BFGs, mostly for the tread life, so I'm glad to hear the weight increase isn't a major issue. That was why I was looking at other tires, and even larger diameter wheels so that I had more light weight tire options. You've got me looking at this combo again. Can't wait to see the next Crosstrek model, and I'm hoping the rumors of a Wilderness Edition are true. Keep up the good work. I hope to become a fellow AZ Subie owner in the near future.

      @AZdroptop  Před rokem +1

      Thank you very much! Most of the towing I have done has been of my 5 x 8 trailer with small loads. Generally 250 to 500 pounds or so. I did tow a very large and heavy mulcher and honestly the car did great. It probably weighed around 800 to 1000 pounds and although I would not have driven on the highway with it, it did fine on backroads and I was able to get up to speed comfortably. Stopping was pretty good, though I could really feel the weight and planned well ahead. :). I think I talked about it in one of my towing videos but can't seem to remember which one.
      No issues with the CVT at all. Hope that helps and thank you for watching along.

    On my third set of KO2's .. on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 2Dr with 265K miles on it (about the same size as your Unlimited) .. I usually get over 50K per set. I run them at 30psi on road and 12/15 off road. Never had a problem. I did try a set of KM3's in 255/85 16" and got 7052 miles out of them!! Either the tires were bad or my driving toasted them. They could not be balanced at 7052 miles .. they were junk and BFG would not back them as they are an all terrain tire with no warranties . I put on another set of KO2's and no problems. I am trying the Toyo AT3's on my Crosstrek .. went with the 225/65/17" .. I'll definitely be eyeballing the KO2's for future.

      @AZdroptop  Před 4 lety

      I was happy to see Subaru finally decided to give the Crosstrek a bit more power for sure. Also nice to see that they gave it the Xmode 2.0. They are claiming that the car get's better MPG with the new motor as well which will be interesting to see if that is in fact the case. To be honest if I was still driving my 18, bought a Jeep if you didn't catch that video, son is driving the Crosstrek now, I don't think it would be enough to push me into trading the 18. I honestly didn't mind the power and it was a comfortable and capable daily driver. I went with the Jeep to allow a little further exploration off road.

    The wife saw me watching these videos and got me this wheel and tire setup (also on an '18) for my birthday recently. Absolutely amazing... and the tires are nice too. The only issue we ran into was that these are S-rated (112 mph) and the stock tires are H-rated (130 mph) so tire shops generally wouldn't help me swap out TPMS sensors and mount the new wheels. We were able, however, to buy new sensors and have the tires mounted, balanced, and shipped directly to me and I put them on myself.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  Před 4 lety +1

      Sounds like you have a serious keeper there my friend. What a great wife. Glad you are liking the wheels and tires! Interesting about the speed rating and the shop would not swap the TPMS sensors for you? First time I have heard of that? I guess I didn't have to deal with it since I bought new ones and kept the originals with the stock set up. Glad it worked out in the end and congrats again!

      @@AZdroptop Thanks, and yeah the tire thing was odd. If I dug more I probably could have found one that didn't let a computer think for them, but the few that I talked to punched the '18 crosstrek and the KO2s into their computer and it was flagged as "under-rated" relative to OEM and they said it was against their policy to install them.

      Howdy, the car is at about 40,000 miles now and no issues at all. We did have one KO2, rear driver's side, blow out on the freeway after a trip home from Kansas. The TPMS was down at the time so my guess is we had something in the tire and didn't know it was going down.
      Otherwise the tires still look great and have a ton of miles left in them. Only complaint with the KO2's is they are a little loud especially on the freeway, but they are awesome for the dirt.

    They are a very popular tyres , but from a 20 experience on off road tyres I found them the noisiest, Yokohama I swap BFG for were quieter but never tested the full miles out of them . I think these days there is a bit more choice as more of this type of vehicles come on to the market and more people adventuring than 10/20 years ago when I started out , running Avon’s out the min but on a van in the uk they were the only AT available in my size and legally van rated

      It is kind of interesting...when I first began looking to go with a smaller wheel and more off road tire I read every review I could find and almost to a person the BFG was claimed to be quiet and long lasting. So far I agree with the long lasting...not so much the quiet part. :) When they are do to be replaced I'm not really sure I'll go with them again. I'm still up in the air to get the wheel tire setup simply because idk what I'm to do if I get a flat while having them on. • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Eric, my Limited came with 18's and the base as well as the premium come with 17's. I resisted the lift for a long time because I was worried about really changing the driving characteristics of the car on road. Not sure how many of my silly videos you have watched, but after I put on the LP aventure skid and front bar I lost an inch and a half of ground clearance and put on some rallytek 1" springs to get some of it back. Managed an 1 inch in the back, but only about 5/8th in the front. All that to say I bought an LPaventure 1/5inch lift kit over Black Friday and do to a lot of different circumstances I never installed it. It sits in the box in my garage as I write this.
      I think a lift is a must if you do the bar and skid plate to get your clearance back. I talked with a few guys who have lifts and while it does change the car's driving characteristics a bit, it isn't much so I think it is a great idea. At this point now that I purchased the Jeep I plan to sell the lift. My son is driving the Crosstrek now and he doesn't need it.

    • @andy31419
      @andy31419 Před 4 lety

      @@AZdroptop Thanks, I got to drive one with a lift once for a short drive and it seemed to stick to the road well that why I asked, I figured thats why you had gone to the smaller rim was to get more tire without giving up clearance. That is something I really don't want to give up. I have watched several videos and learned about the Pin access on my '17 Outback which will come in handy so thank you much, the dealer never told us about it and I hadn't gotten that far in the manual. Wife drives the outback and I'm looking at a 2021 Crosstrek.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  Před 4 lety +1

      Mainly went with the rim for the extra sidewall for off road and the good thing is the new set up is basically the same circumference as the stock set up. It was a bummer to loose the clearance with the skid plate, but the protection was necessary as well. They have skid's that attach to the stock plastic skid location, but I figured a big hit on the skid in the stock location could still cause damage. The LP skid mounts to the bar so you loose the 1.5 inches.

We have a huge fire going on Mount Lemmon, the mountain near my house that you have seen in a few videos...It has basically traveled from the W end of the Catalina mountains all the way near the town on mount Lemmon and has crossed over to Redington road where I have been as well in videos. Crazy! I will get up there and show you the devastation once they reopen the roads. Take care!!! Great to hear from you.

      Thank you Mark. Actually those came directly from Subaru back in 2011 when I bought my STI. I have carried them over and they are still working great. Made by Yakima. I tend to buy my Subaru stuff from Heuberger Subaru in Co. these days as their prices are pretty good.

      @@AZdroptop did you have any issues about your tps sensor with your new wheels and tires?

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  Před 3 lety +1

      A couple issues. First, discount had trouble programing them when first installed. They used the wrong year Crosstrek. The other issue was that the TPMS sensors I bought with the new set up were recalled a couple years from new. They replaced them under warranty. You can always have your stock TPMS moved to the new wheels tires if you get a new set up.

      Very nice! Should be straight forward with the TPMS. Just make sure they are working when you drive away and don't let them tell you it takes 5 miles for them to activate. I have been down that road with them. :) If they are not working with in a mile they are not programmed correctly.

      I never found a different tire that really caught my eye, but there are a few new wheels out that I like. LP has a couple choices and I like the sparko terra's. There is another wheel I liked but can't currently think of the name. Pretty popular now and not as expensive as the Method's.

      Hi Brandon, did they give a reason as to why they are not fitting as well? Or any hint at all? I don't know of any significant changes with the Crosstrek's break's for 22 so I'm not sure what the reason would be. It is possible that Subaru changed something. I would call either LPaventure or Method wheels directly and see what they have to say. LP has always been great when I contacted them directly. I look around a bit and see if I can figure something out.

      Found this on LP's site on their 2021 project Crosstrek. KO2 235/75/15 *some modifications to the inner fenders are required" Keep in mind this is with 235 tires and my guess is why modifications were needed. 215's would probably fit fine, but I would still give them a ring. Best of luck!

      I had the shop put the ones from my stock wheels into the Method/BFG set I bought since they only had about 3k miles on them. Didnt make sense to me to buy a whole new set when you consider that the batteries in them eventually go bad over time.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  Před 4 lety +1

      My initial plan was to keep my stock wheels and tires and use them for long road trips so I bought new ones for the KO2's and kept the stock set up together. If you are not planning on keeping the stock set up for use you can just switch them over like L T mentioned...will save you $150 or so.

I needed up selling them and never bought an additional wheel/tire. You can use the spare with the methods as they are the same circumference, but it would be nice to have a spare for sure.
