    I can't stand brands that get in contact to " *collaborate* and send you a watch for review because we think it will benefit your audience ". This is pure BS. We all know it's cheaper (and more efficient) for them to send a watch for review than to buy ad impressions. And they would choke if they knew how much a dedicated upload on a channel like yours actually costs (irrespective of them having a say in the script or not). That's why unrelated sponsors are the (only?) way to go. 🥃 Here's one to your integrity!

    A genuine and honest insight, much appreciated. I still prefer the purely hobbyist/enthusiast content from the past but I appreciate this is your living now so you need to operate differently. And individual quality assurance issues with a particular watch aside, I don't think anyone who is prepared to lend you watch is going to be hurt by an opinion of you not liking it or preferring something else in a comparison, I'd say its all pretty subjective once you are paying 4 figures plus for a watch.

  • @adventureswithtime
    @adventureswithtime Před 3 lety +20

    Imagine how hard it is for smaller channels to get material for content.
    I’ve never been approached by a major brand.
    I’ve been lent two microbrand watches for review with no remuneration. I’ve also been contacted by some products to make content which I’ve turned down because they didn’t seem straight. Other than that I’m left to buying watches for content or going to film watches at AD. Buying watches just for content is too costly. Filming at ADs is tough these days.
    So it’s hard for us small channels to make content.
    Thanks for the look into your work.

    • @BarkandJack
      @BarkandJack  Před 3 lety +9

      It is hard, every channel has been small and for a very long time I made content about watches I'd tried on in ADs and then just made a video talking about the watch, but using photos off the internet. It's easy content and it gets views. Granted it's not as good as actually having the watch with you. But it's all about growth and then that opens doors.

      Rolex is the one brand that doesn't communicate with it fans or ever listen to what the community wants. It frustrates with all its AD shenanigans which then frustrates/rips off the end user.

    This was a cool and informative video. I enjoyed it. On the topic of trusting an influencer, I really don't care what most influencer's opinions are. Some content creators, like Adrian, are more fun to watch even if I don't always agree with his critiques or likes - but his channel is still interesting to watch.

  • @saulysw
    @saulysw Před 3 lety +3

    It seems to me that one way reviewers are paid, slightly under the table, is via the "free watch". Someone like Jody at JOMW might get several $500+ watches a week given to him, in a good week. If you flip those in private, I imagine it could be quite lucrative. Couple this with affiliate links, youtube revenue, and you are on to a decent thing if you can get the volume. This can lead to a conflict of interest when it comes to negative reviews, but some handle this a lot better than others. Jody being very transparent and an example of someone who does this well, IMHO.

    • @josephburton3232
      @josephburton3232 Před 3 lety +1

      I love the aesthetic of the Diver 65 and the Big Crown but that's about it. I think their watches are incredibly over rated for the price they charge. They use generic Sellita movements in their Aquis, Diver 65, and Big Crown yet they are charging over $2,000 for them? No thanks. For that price you can get a Sinn that has anti-magnetic capabilities or a Ball that comes with a chronometer certified movement. You can even get a much cheaper alternative with Christopher Ward who makes fantastic watches and they use the same movement as Oris. Christopher Ward even has chronometer certified watches in their military line that are around $1,100.
      However, I did see that Oris just announced a brand new, in-house movement. If that movement becomes their standard in their Aquis, Diver 65, and Big Crown line, then I will eat my words and change my tune because that thing looks awesome! I'm curious to see if Oris has the manufacturing capabilities to put an in-house movement like that in their standard line and how much the price increase will be.

    I think there's another point about buying into a content creator in that a good creator will typically have a good quality of subscriber.
    Content is tuned to the type of person the creator wants to watch, consciously or otherwise. The word of mouth a quality channel's subscribers create is so valuable that, for a watch brand that's confident in its product, getting to those people is a must. So paying for, or trying to control, content is effectively breaking a link in their supply chain.

    I can't stand when influencers try to play off advertisements like it's just something they really want to share with us. Thank you for keeping it real. "I get the financial return [...] by mentioning Skillshare. Whislt we're on it, let's talk about Skillshare."

    Hey I think most of us "old time" viewers understand that you are not and have never in any way been influenced by brands. You have always made that clear. I'm gonna try Skillshare, was wondering if there are any photography "channels there you might suggest. I know you posted this a few hours ago, so you might not see this comment, so i might ask you on IG as well . Thanks for the discount!

    Anthony & Luke from Clockbait slated the first watch I loaned them 🤣 I didn't care I loved that watch (still do). It didn't stop me loaning them more. Everyone has an opinion and it would be boring if all those opinions were the same. 👍🏼

      It's fun when you have watch friends like that. People who just accept we like different things and don't care what others think.

    Great video 👍 for me, the thing that triggers suspicion is when a watch is released with positive reviews only, all at the same time. Baltic Aquascaphe is a recent example.

    Of course if you ask a question about a relationship with brands these are going to be the questions You’re going to get. I will say this Adrian I started watching your channel over a year ago and I have found that has the production values have improved the authenticity of a guy who just drinks coffee and loves watches has given way to something a little more contrived

    • @BarkandJack
      @BarkandJack  Před 3 lety

      That’s often the case with high production. It loses the grittiness of something off the cuff. There’s always been a plan, everything is done with purpose and for a purpose. But I honestly feel the content I’m creating now is more authentic than the early stuff. Early on I was trying to a guy on CZcams. Now I am just a guy on CZcams. If that makes sense.
