      Do you play with your hair a lot? That could explain why your ends were damaged. I'm newly natural. Your hair looks full in its textured state. I'd just wear it textured rather than blowed out straight.

    This is something that I swear by. BLOWDRY YALL HAIR. It’s not going to damage it if done properly. I blowdry my hair once a month sometimes even twice. And my hair is fine. I can see all those knots properly and snip them bfr it gets worse. I don’t who made us believe that heat was the devil. I’ve seen so many girls with waist length hair who haven’t blown their hair out for years and when they finally get a silk press, half of it is damage.

    I've been a blowdryed-natural for almost a year now and ever since then, I've retained so much length! It cuts down on knots and tangles that would've been guaranteed had I kept my hair in its natural state. It also helped me to see my ends, to which I can dust when need be. My hair stops just about 2 inches above my tailbone 🤎

      @@XoxoNikkiEsquire No problem beautiful! Believe me, I was afraid of heat myself. But I realized that heat isn't the issue. Its how you utilize it. If you use it responsibly, there's a 100% guarantee that your hair will always revert. What really gave me the green light to become a blowdryed-natural is another black sista on here by the name of GreenBeauty. She's a chemist and goes in detail about the benefits of keeping type 4 hair stretched; as well as a step-by-step process on how she uses heat to stretch her hair. I would definitely check her out!! You will NOT regret it boo! 🥰😇

    • @laniiyahscott143
      @laniiyahscott143 Před 2 lety +29

      @Trinity M It actually doesn't. My hair still obtains its natural textures. I've worn my hair completely natural for well over 12 years. However, the longer it's gotten, I realized that wearing it in its complete shrunken state can cause it to become tangled which leads to single strand knots and breakage. Safely stretching it with a cool shot airflow or just low heat, non-excessively, will not damage your natural curl pattern, and promotes length retention. After doing this for about almost a year, my hair has grown 4 inches and is just above my tailbone. And every wash day, my hair reverts to its natural state, and I make sure to add strengthening agents to ensure it's health. Many indigenous African tribes naturally use banding methods to keep their hair stretched as well. 🤎❤💗

    Heat styling you hair is also important to see your roots as well (not just your ends). I used to get a blowout only once or twice a year and it took me a while to notice that my hair had thinned so much that you could see my scalp. It was only noticeable when my hair was straightened, which was practically never. I went to the dermatologist and was diagnosed with lupus, which was what was thinning my hair. Straighten your hair a few times a year and it will help give you a glimpse into your health!

      yep in cos school we are thought to look for the signs of poor health or changes.
      im currently in school finishing this year and stylist are really not just stylist. and any nail tech, enthusiastic and so on. the amount of medical information we learn is astounding. i was very shocked. but it helps to better assist clients with what is truly going on with your hair. cause it could be medical. and the first thing we are to suggest is seek medical attention.
      i have learned it's not just about slap this product on to thicken your hair or for length retention. or so on and so on.
      that consultation portion is sooo important.
      it made me appreciate the stylist before me to include my mom that took hair care super serious. and value stylist that wouldn't just style my hair without shampooing. becuase they looked at the whole health of the hair.

      After the lupus medication started working, my hair did start to grow back, but not to its full glory…I think primarily because I’m in my late 30s which is around the age your hair and body stops rejuvenating itself like it used to anyway. I use hair growth pills by a brand called Advanced Trichology, but I have no idea if they’re really working or not.

      Tbh I don’t like the concept. Straight hair is not naturally Afro textured hair. I understand what you mean but you should not be forced into applying heat on your hair your hair to see the health. If you are aware of your hair in it’s natural state you shouldn’t have to straighten it to know if it’s damaged.
      My hair is high porosity. My hair doesn’t really do well with heat. Any amount of heat I use always leaves minor heat damage unless it’s on the lowest temperature that doesn’t get it straight enough. How about doing monthly scalp checks and parting the scalp in sections .. heat is not for everyone especially if you have naturally high porosity 🤷🏽‍♀️. We are taught that seeing hair health is based on straightened hair . Not true , natural hair has different characteristics to know if damaged . many people miss it because Afro textured hair wasn’t researched as much as straight hair

    I don’t understand why people need to see their ends before getting it trimmed… if it’s been 3 months, it’s time for a trim. Period. If your ends are healthy, it’ll just be a light dusting. But you’ll never have see through ends if you just follow a consistent schedule.

    It’s best to remove all the split ends and breakage now and get trims regularly every 8-12 weeks. Long term it will benefit you and you will have healthy long thick hair. No point to keep bad ends. Also focus on your nutrition, supplements, hydration, exercise. Our hair is a reflection of our health. I would also recommend avoiding diys since it is not possible to determine the ph of those products. Purchase products that work for your hair porosity and have the proper ph. In 2-3 years you can reach your long hair goals. Be patient and consistent. It’s a journey but the results are worth the wait. Your hair looks nice now but it can be better.

    • @marlak4203

      it could also be some things aren't necessary so much. To deep condition EVERY time you wash. Protein treat EVERY time and other things too. Just maybe do those things once a month or so. and rest of the time just shamp, condi (no deep) and then rinse out and put in your moisturizer, do a simple style with your hair unless you are going somewhere special. Lay down the synth hair. Don't use that so much. There's chemicals in there too. Vinegar washed may not be enough to get it out. And you are right about other factors going on internal. Also external environment. Make sure that is good too.
      There's a lot of Tubers now having to cut off their hair, some bald, and that tells me its due to since they are Tubers and have to stay with trends and keep things 'fresh' with their content AND using themselves as a guinea pig with these products they have to use this brand new stuff and manipulate their hair a lot to keep their channels going. That in itself will cause these issues too.

    • @marlak4203
      @marlak4203 Před 2 lety +2

      @Trinity M
      Well some things are important to know. Like women used to deep condition kind of sparingly not EVERY single week or however many times they wash their hair. It was something like a "spa" day thing in a sense. Many women had long and healthy hair without all of this extra. I come from that time and it is possible. For those that want to do more steps it is ok just that it isn't as necessary as some make it out to be. Some people ACTUALLY think a lot of steps and all of that time are absolutely necessary which is what causes them to LITERALLY have a whole wash DAY for just their hair. Same some/many say about skincare and the 12 and more steps some believe they have to do. Doesn't mean it won't work but its the matter of necessity. Not a thing to do with laziness either.

    I feel like damaged hair is based on someone else’s hair needs. If we follow our own regimens and understand our hair based on what it feels like and what it wants , we would prevent further damage. I started my own hair journey last year for good. after listening to what CZcamsrs hair loved, I realized their hair wasn’t mine so I stopped listening .My hair just didn’t grow until I got my own regimen. my hair wouldn’t be able to withstand too much styling throughout the week . I feel like the over styling can possibly damage the hair and the use of different products. I know this is your job, but not all hair can withstand that amount of styling . My hair is sooo long now and the longest it’s ever been in a year. I grew to bra strap length in 2 months after struggling with armpit length just by clipping / dusting my ends every 2 months.. online says trim when needed but some people can go 3-4 months, my hair can only go 2 months.. but my hair has grown Chile !!!! My ends were the problem also that it wasn’t growing ..Your strands look medium to fine density so the strand isn’t as strong as a coarse stand, the more you style, the more you have to trim more frequently.. I’m high porosity so trimming is needed . I wear a wash and go every week styled and leave it like that until wash day, and repeat

    July 2019 I got my first big chop. 4 months later, I cut it even shorter, my sides and back shaved to the scalp. I found a wonderful natural hairstylist that taught me so much about my hair and natural hair health. Prior to going back natural I would trim my hair once, maybe twice a year. Now…I get my natural hair trimmed every 3 to 4 months. Some people may think, how do you retain length trimming your hair so often? Believe me, you do. I was also a non believer to this until I saw the results. My hair grew sis and retained length. After keeping it short because I like the style of it, I decided to grow my hair out. In less than a year my hair grew from being close cut to my scalp to neck length all while getting trims every 3 months. Learning our hair is an ongoing process because it also changes with the environment, age, health and so on. Mine changed a lot when I hit my 30’s and having kids. So I’m forever learning but having a good routine and regular trims are essential. Your hair journey will continue to be the bomb because you’re continuing to learn your hair and what works for you. You will be at bcl hair in no time sis.

    Thanks for being so vulnerable with us. I'm sure it wasn't easy especially with all the time that you have invested in your hair. Trims are so important like you mentioned and I feel like at times as naturals, we may not trim because our hair looks good or we don't use that much heat. A lot of naturals say that you shouldn't trim on a consistent schedule and you should only trim when your having difficulty with your hair. I disagree with that because like you said, that didn't happen for you. You felt like your hair was healthy. I feel like trimming every 3-4 months shouldn't be an issue.

    This video is refreshing and I appreciate the honesty. I think BCLH doesn’t need to be the goal. I feel like when you just try to maintain a routine and don’t worry about length you actually get the length. There are so many curly CZcamsrs out there pulling their hair down showing ‘length’ that looks like an upside down triangle and new naturals might think that’s what healthy hair should be. I feel the struggle and understand not wanting to lose the length but in the long run it’s better to be healthy and short than long and straggly at the end. My hair always looks good when I do it as well I never notice how many split ends I have until I blow it out without oils and butters, then I can see them really well and subsequently I cut them off. This is relatable because I had to big chop my nearly waist legnth hair in Oct 2021.. Though my issues were a bit different.. I thought I had a handle on my hair health.. I'd grown my hair out over the years using "protective styles" that I learned the very hard way weren't truly protective.. I went to a "cut it kinky" alum stylist and got an earful of information on the true state of my hair.. And she was right.. I did go in for my follow up trim at the 12wk mark and after implementing the techniques I'd learned in my initial visit my hair has done a 180.. My stylist approved that I appear to now be on the right track.. I previously avoided heat of any kind, I got a curly cut/trim and so still am not blowing out my hair.. I am using my hooded dryer weekly to set my wash and go styles.. I can't wait to see what this head of hair of mine can do, now that I have partnered with a natrual hair stylist..

    Do you think you'd be able to try stretching your washes to every 2 weeks for a trial period? For me, low manipulation is key, and I found that I was losing almost the same amount of hair doing weekly washes as I did doing bi-weekly washes. That meant that some of that hair loss I had during the weekly wash wasn't just shed hair. I just go really heavy handed on wash day with the leave-in, cream, and light butter and gel to keep the hair moisturized and hold the style for the 2 weeks. I also go in after week 1 with an oilier but water-based moisturizer and press/squeeze it into my existing set style.

Leaving my hair out in puffs guarantees knots, dry ends and breakage. DIY and washing not shampooing my hair weekly has allowed me to retain length. Oh yes girl! I had a similar experience with henna. My 4c low porosity hair does not like Henna at all!! Rice Water and Henna can be used by us low porosity girlies, but it has to used sparingly (maybe once a quarter) with lots of additional moisturizing ingredients.
      One youtuber, adds a few tablespoons of honey to her rice water and only uses once every 8 weeks. I never tried rice water because my hair is low porosity/protein sensitive, but want to try SheRea's recipe with honey added. Further, Green Beauty recommends that the rice be boiled first (to remove the starch) prior to allowing it to ferment in water. She also said the longer you allow the rice to sit, the more protein content. So only allow it to sit for a few hours.

    The same thing happened to my 11 year old. I feel so guilty! I also thought keeping the heat out of her hair and clipping her ends in twists was best. I know better now that she has lost 5 inches to split ends.

    I know you said nothing is wrong in your routine. But don't you have to think about the underlying reason as to why your hair got so bad.
    I know split ends are inevitable but really they are due to to what we do to our hair.
    If you see that you have to trim more often e.g. If your stylist is telling you to come more often at some point then look into your routine

    I don’t think its what you did but what you didn’t do, which is more regular trims. I am about to get a professional trim myself because i am sure am not getting all i need to cut when i do it myself. I have definitely benefitted from your DIYs and regimen.

    Thank you for your honesty. As a licensed stylist, we are TIIIRRRREEEDDDDD of people saying they are scared of heat when it comes time for a trim. Naturals, we’re tired. Let us do our job (the ones that will safely style your hair with heat because I recognize that’s not everybody) and blow dry/straighten your hair to see your ends. A lot of y’all are doing so much more damage doing all this DIY stuff. Thanks girl for your transparency, you have a great platform and I know you’re helping a lot of people 😘. Ladies, go get a PROFESSIONAL TRIM!!

      What is your opinion on cutting damp hair? I used to go to my stylist for a trim until I got heat damage from her, the last three inches of my hair were crusty and hard to detangle and I KNOW it was her. I tried to repair it but couldn't, I just cut the last of it off last week on my own. I judge what to cut by seeing where my brush starts to snag when I detangle.

      @@personmcdudeguy Hello! That sounds awful, I’m sorry ☹️. Well there are different schools of thought on whether to cut hair wet or dry. Some of it depends on preference, stylist ability and texture. I personally know some stylists that only like to cut on wet hair, but often their clients are relaxed. You also have those that may prefer cutting curly when it’s dry or they like to straighten it out prior to. It all depends on the stylist, the client’s end goal and what works best for the hair. I personally like to blow dry/straighten the hair out prior to cutting for two reasons. One, I’m better able to see what needs to be cut and two, my clients go back and forth between curly and straight, so I don’t want too chopped up of a look when they decide to go straight. I can see the benefits of dry curly hair cutting to create the shape necessary for the client that wears their hair a majority of the time curly. A good stylist will tell you why they cut the hair a certain way and if they can’t tell you, you shouldn’t go to them! Hope that helps 😃

      @@godhascalled This was very helpful, thank you very much. My texture is 3c ish, and I can just pull it straight when wet and cut it that way. But it's getting long enough now that it is getting difficult to cut by myself, so I will have to get over my fears and get some help... lol. It means a lot that you took the time for such a detailed response.

    • @godhascalled
      @godhascalled Před 2 lety +1

      @@personmcdudeguy You’re welcome! When I was in cosmetology school, my instructor said that some textures that are straighter or looser in curl, are easy to cut when wet. The key when cutting hair wet, no matter the texture is pulling the hair taut. If you pull the hair taut, you can cut any texture wet. BUT, as your hair gets longer, it is definitely more difficult to have the proper tension to get the right cut. I hope you find a knowledgeable and trustworthy stylist to help you on your journey ❤️

    @14:39-15:20 - Yes, yes and yes!!! My younger sister gave me the trim/mini cut and walked me through everything. I love that she gave me the option to take all off now or cut a proper amount and come back in a few months so my hair wasn’t super short.
    I do feel like the light "dusting" we do at home is beneficial (if you can clearly see that it needs to be done). It’s unfortunate that you had to give up a lot of length because you genuinely didn’t notice how bad the ends were. I feel like my hair does the same thing to me which is why I’m much more adamant about going to a professional to have a proper trim every so often so that I’m not the reason I have to give up my length.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I’m SO glad you shared this because I literally experienced the same thing. Thanks for your transparency as always, you gone get it back sis ❤️

    Thank you for talking about this! I went through something similar a few years ago. As you talked about it’s important to take off as much damage as you can. I feel like too many people talk about stretching out trims and cutting as little as possible. That actually causes more damage. One of the signs I’ve recognized as my needing a trim is when my hair isn’t retaining length. ✂️
