  • Ever wonder how it all works? How it was built? This is the story of the Walt Disney World Monorail system, one of the busiest monorail transit systems in the world. Riding aboard these trains is a classic part of the Disney experience, and today we will be delving into their creation and operation!

    Monorails are often misunderstood, and there are many myths about them. This video provides a comprehensive look at how monorails can still benefit society in their own way:

    I still remember getting my wings as a child riding in the front of the Monorail. Something my kids will not get to do with the decision of Disney to not allow front passenger riders in the pilots cabin. I still remember the first time riding them when i was 5 in 1990

    My first trip to Disneyland was 1969. In the late 1970's, Disney (the corporation) made a series of bad business decisions. In 1980, when I visited the park by myself (I had been there with family before) I will never forget my first trip on the monorail. The air conditioning wasn't working and there was graffiti inside the monorail, which reminded me of New York City subways of the time. I went back a couple years later and things were much better.

    My 1st trip to the Magic Kingdom was in November 2001. I rented a small Kia and was speeding through the rain on WDW Drive. Now MK is 4 miles away from the interstate, so it's a while before you see monorail tracks. after driving a while & only seeing hotels 4 lanes in & 4 lanes OUT with a giant median, I reasoned that the park was a "myth". Until I finally saw those tracks! LOL! Fav. fun memory is when my sister visited with me her 1st time. We rode up front w/ the pilot!

    Hello. I was a Monorail Operator at WDW opening. I am confused by the "CAST MEMBERS ONLY." Not there when I was. Also the door could be opened manually, ony if you had to open one door for something. The doors were opened by pushing the Black Buttons outside just behind the operators door. One opened all doors, and there was one for each individual car. The telephones were not there. I left in late September 1974 and myself and five others were selected as Trainers and Leads to open Space Mountain. It was in the last 90 days of constrution site. Wrote a training SOP, trained ourselves and the began training 180 castmembers for opening on January 15, 1975. There were "soft" or unnanounced openings for a few hours at a time during December. Lots of testing.
    Monorails again. When I left for Space Mountain there were ten trains. The last one was Monorail Black. In fact we had one African American Supervior, Josh Sledge, who brought it out of the Monorail Roundhouse as it was called even though it was not round. It only had five places for train maintenance. There was a few schedules that were overnight so that we could move the trains in and out as needed. We were all crazy. The stories are all true. I left Space Mountain and went to Cash Control. Then on April 7, 1979 I left Disney and spent thirty-seven years, and retired from Amerian Airlines. As of today January 22, 2023 I am back in the Orlando area in a very quiet area living with my husband, a retired Amerian Airlines Captain. He was one of the first openly gay pilots at the airline.
    I am still friends with some of the opening Monorail Drivers. The youngest of us cannot be less than 69 or 70 years old. I have not been to WDW in over 25 years and do not plan on ever driving past it in I-4. Be well my friends. I will you all the best. Oh, I was able to entertain families, even on long haul flights traveling to WDW by naming all of the Seven Dwarfs. That is all can admit to.

    As I recall, there was a monorail crash at Walt Disney World circa 1975, which resulted in one fatality. I also remember from that era being crammed in between two corpulent, sweaty adults at the end of our Disney Day, then a cast member closed the doors, which was like listening to fifty car doors being slammed sequentially. We took the ferry next time.

    The automation doesn't really do too much in avoiding a repeat of the accident, since, iirc, that happened during shunting, not during regular operation.
    Improvements are good (like, the railroad could probably use a proper block-system), but in this case the cause laid somewhere else.
    Also, on the night they had to constantly chase off people taking photos of the crushed monorail BEFORE the victim was recovered, which is just horrific.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  Před rokem +1

      Yes one of the trains was being switched, but the other was in normal service operation. If this same scenario were to happen with the new automated monorails, the one in service, carrying passengers would have emergency stopped when it detected the monorail ahead. One of the ways the collision could have been avoided was if the in-service monorail had seen the one ahead, or noticed it much sooner.
      Of course it's entirely possible that full automation introduces entirely new issues that we have yet to see.
