An official weapon tutorial for the Prowler, the 15th weapon of Monster Hunter Generations.
Great guide, it was particularly useful to me to know how much of the gauge gets charged with each attack. However, I'd like to point out 2 things:
1. Prowlers do have invincibility frames. They activate a bit earlier compared to hunters so you have to adjust your timing and press the B button a bit later to evade through an attack/roar.
2. You don't have to attack before evading to run with an unsheathed weapon afterwards, just evading is already enough.
Also just an offnote, but the evadving run is slightly slower than an unsheathed run.
Two useless fun facts: If you dig as a prowler, go under a trampoline then pop out, you will immediately bounce up.
You can dig below canopies. Good for getting skillful mounts.

Yes, the unsheathed evade+run combo is indeed slower than running with your weapon sheathed (but still faster than walking).
Also, there are several animations you can cancel out of by evading: wheel-spin combo finisher, Fury mode animation (and Fury combo finisher), and Acorn revival.

Great guide! A couple minor things you didn't cover, just for thoroughness-sake:
the weapon-drawn run is definitely faster than normal walking, but the weapon-sheathed run IS noticeably faster than that, and prowler's sheathing speed is top-notch. It's also quite easy to sheath in the middle OF the weapon-drawn run and go straight into a sheathed-run, without stopping. So don't be afraid to put those weapons away when chasing a monster over larger distances (or fleeing from a very bad situation, if you don't have Emergency Retreat or don't want to spend the charge)
If you lead off with an un-charged boomerang (IE just tapping A) or use it after a SINGLE X attack (X - A), there's a small delay before the throw (perhaps more noticeable without the Boomerang Boost skill). However, if you followup the SECOND X attack with an A (X - X - A), you'll throw the boomerang out *instantly*. It's a good way to start a combo, if you're trying to grab a little extra charge or stay mobile.
Most support skills can be activated immediately after almost any attack in a Prowler's combo. There's something great about doing the post-boomerang dive move straight into the monster's face and then whipping out a giant barrel bomb the instant your paws touch the ground.
Holding R and hitting B while weapon is sheathed to burrow. Not as fast to execute as Emergency Retreat (and it can be interrupted) but once you're underground you're invincible and stop generating aggro altogether.. ideal if you need to go unnoticed while fleeing the area or waiting for a chance to pull a big move.
Carrying large items (like eggs) causes you to constantly gain charge at a slow rate. Probably not as efficient as fighting or gathering but it means Prowlers shouldn't feel reluctant to help with Transport objectives.. or lug around a wyvern egg while hunting Raths, to lure the monster AND generate charge at the same time.
When in a mixed Prowler and Hunter party, never discount your ability to act as pack mule and bring along items just to give to teammates mid-hunt! Bow-users will love you forever if you bring a pocket-full of spare power-coatings, and I've had Capture missions that would have been failed outright if I hadn't brought spare Traps to hand out.

Using the standard burrow stops the damage from Burn/Bleed/Poison and recovers red health over time. In the case of Bleed, this is a rather safe way to wait it out, as you still get the recovery boost after the status passes and can move underground without harm to you. Useful if you took a big hit and know that herb/health horn would only recover a red portion of your health.
Also, if you have the large monster's aggro, certain ones have a behavior that sort of acts like a minesweeper. If the monster has a roar, or an attack that interacts with the ground in a certain way like Yian Kut-ku/Garuga, they will actively seek out the Prowler and either roar to force them above ground, or in the latter's case outright pluck them out (the same way they would a Konchu). Since Burrowing doesn't grant earplugs, the roars can be especially devastating because you come topside then do the reeling animation as if you heard the roar above ground.
As an aside, if your Prowler doesn't have Earplugs, they can take a page from the Hunter's book for shortening the prone time during a roar. All one needs do is perform an action that makes them airborne when the roar comes out, and you'll be thrown back instead of cringing/reeling/Block-stunned. That animation tends to complete much sooner than the others would, especially in the case of longer roars. For Prowlers, their options are the 3rd hit in the combo (or R + X), the Lunge after boomerangs, or the Wheel combo finisher.

+pedro avila The original MHTri had no gunlance, dual blades, hunting horn, or bow. They can take weapons out, but it disappoints dedicated consumers.

Prowlers are probably the only thing they could get away with removing, but I'd like to see them improved, not removed.
OH MY GOD LOL!!! right when I figure out how to do that move in furious mode, you upload a prowler tutorial, also Im SO HAPPY that the prowlers can do that attack, its the attack that *King Shakalaka* used in MHFU, he was one of my favorite Monsters! lil guys looked like fricken smol mobile switch axes hahaha.

I think it's also important to add that you can dodge out of animations to make them quicker. WIth the wheel, if you dodge when you land, you skip the get-up animation. And with furr-ious, when you hit the ground after you jump, you can skip the tantrum animation. Doing this makes prowler flow A LOT better.
If you press R +B without weapon and not moving, you can burrow(the invincibility mode under the earth), too. But notice that burrowing gives you not completly invincibility. Roars will throw you out of the earth, even if you use the healing skill that burrows you. So I would recommend to search for a cat that has earplugs, if you want to use the skill or the move.

You can go from a sheathed weapon into a boomerang quickly without doing the lenghty X draw attack. With your weapon sheathed press R+X+A to go for a guard and then press A to use the boomerang.
i really, really wish they would add this option for later games.
I would like to add that there is a noticeable difference between running with your weapon sheathed and running with it unsheathed. You are slightly slower when you have your weapon out while running, but this shouldn't necessarily matter unless your main goal is to get to places as quick as possible.

Probably not worth mentioning, but if you are underground with emergency retreat or normal retreat, it knocks you out of the ground.
A trick that I've learned is that you can charge up a boomerang facing up an incline,. Then, you can re-position to face down the incline to throw your first boomerang in the double boomerang combo upwards, instead of parallel to the ground.
Prowlers do have I-Frames, Canta did some while hunting an Astalos. I also tried it on Narga.
Fun thing i discovered that if you set Start button to "Special Attack" instead of "Menu". You can do the shortcut to the stronger attacks without doing it with guarding first or you can do it with taping the touchscreen button but thats not really practical. Thx 4 the guide Gaijin Hunter!

4:38 The boomerang also goes a decent but further than if you didn't charge it. so if the monster your hunting can 1-2 shot you you can be safe and hang back a bit further and still deal some damage.
hey Gaijin, I may be wrong, but it seems that prowlers all essentially have Minds Eye as well. Thanks for this awesome tutorial, I had no idea about the rage combo or the auto tranqs. awesome stuff.
Prowlers do not have minds eye, I can verify this myself after bouncing nonstop on a Grimclaw's claws. However, their weapons never lose sharpness, so you can be assured that if you bring a sharp weapon, you will never bounce

True, but half of a Prowler's moveset is a jumping or boomerang attack and those cannot bounce anyway. So for your melee combo, that's the 3rd hit (R+X) onwards. For boomerangs, it includes the jumping lunge (A,X) and finisher.
And this is before we even touched on biases.

You DO get invincibility frames on the rolls since I have dodged through attacks and roars with it and another thing is you do not have to do an attack in order to sprint. You can just press B to dodge and then your cat will sprint just like that
I've been playing around with a Shock Tripper Trapper Prowler lately. If you can lay a trap and then hit a monster with shock tripper, the damage over time is pretty crazy as it stays in the AOE for an extended period of time. Mounting works just as well, so Trampoliner is a less expensive alternative, as are status effects.

The run after an evade with the weapon drawn is in fact a bit slower than sprinting with your sheated weapon. In practical play, this isnt a significant diference but i thought I would just mention it

Yeah, hunting Hyper monsters is particularly fun in Prowler mode. Hitting the hyper spots fills the Support gauge so fast you'd think you were already playing MHGU....

Small correction, Gaijin, but you don't necessarily have to attack then dodge to run with weapon drawn. You just need to evade, then hold the direction you want to move. Also something to keep in mind about Prowlers, like hunters, they only get 8 Tranq bombs per hunt.
He didn't say you had to attack to go into dodge run, he said you could dodge after an attack and hold B to run w/ an unsheathed weapon. And your second point is wrong too. Prowlers have infinite tranqs

My favourite thing to do is trap a monster while there are four raged Prowlers in my group and every cats starts using the hack and slash attack and just keeps attacking, using the finisher when the monster escapes.

I could be wrong but the prowler will sprint after an evade with your weapon out. you dont need to do it after an attack.

You missed one important move though, the manual dive into ground when unsheathed.

that move save me from carting, so yeah its important, press R + B when your weapon is sheated, although you can get hit when you do the digging animation and got popped out when got quake, if you got poison you take no damage and its good for escaping from monster or enter the area of monster without being noticed.

+gaijin hunter I've found a lot of motion values for the shots online but what's the difference between HBG and LBG in terms of power, because I can't find the damage increase that Long Barrel and Power Barrel provide. It's sad to hear that you're not making a tutorial with all the motion values condensed down into one video but if you could confirm this question, it would be a big help.

People always underestimate the power of the Prowler when all they know is how to spam the mounting attack with the insect glaive. Shame considering it's even more efficient than hunters in SEVERAL situations.

It is, but if you're in Fury mode, I think it's about as fast as normal speed.
Gaijin, your tutorial neglected to mention the ability to go from sheathed to immediate guard. Also, I'm not sure if you mentioned the ability to go from guard into dodge or boomerang without letting go of guard.

Just started playing MHGU and for me the Prowler makes this a completely different game coming from MHR and working backwards. Capcom did an amazing job with Monster Hunter it is a hardcore gamer game with depth style and humor I can see why it has a cult like following it's that good. That why I still play Nintendo like Zelda and Mario Monster Hunter is just as good and better in many ways.

The only problem I have with prowler is that theres quite a few monsters whose heads are out of reach since you cant aim the prowler vertically.

I used to be a hunter in Gen, but I find being a Prowler to be way more fun and challenging than being a hunter.

SO, for the rage mode finisher, it seems to be several hits but the motion value is only one. I assume that value is for the downward finish, but what about the rest?
I finally got my E.R., Big Boomerang., Earplugs, Boomerang Pro cat after re rolling for 3 weeks! UGH! It was worth it though, even came with Negate wind, poison and paralysis!

I find the lack of music disturbing.
My cat has Big, Pierce, Boomerang Pro and Attack Up L. I always pick weapons with a high ranged damage and once I get 3 skill points, I wreck everything I fight. When I play solo and I have my 2 cats with me, I bring a healer with all the horns (Health, Cheer and Detox) and another fighter...solo became trivial. But some of the hob quests still give me issues (like Kirin and Kushala Daora).
i haven't experimented with my bomb cats too much, i notice palicos will carry small bombs around before throwing them. I've only got the mini bombay on my main prowler, but it throws it immediately. is there any way to carry it, or is that only for bigger bombs?

I loooove using prowlers. The only thing that really bothers me is how much more powerful the boomerang buffs are compared to everything else. I have tried to focus on Felyne Comet myself(one of my absolute faves) and it DOES do 20 motion value times 3, but when the boomerang buffs are just that much stronger, I'm not sure if I can justify bringing anything else =/
edit: I've tried a lot(including tanks and bombs), but outside of pure Felyne Comet focus, nothing seems to be quite as good as boomerangs.

It is indeed. Another fave of mine. I still haven't tried a hybrid of both - boomerangs and those close range skills I like. Maybe it's time.
+JoJoX200 Perhaps they should add more weapon types of some sort for the Prowlers like Bows or Lances or something. It would definitely add more variety for a game that includes a weapon type nobody expected.
I honestly don't know if they really need to add too much in the way of weapon types. Maybe but 1 more haha. One melee focused weapon and one ranged. Basically the weapons we actually carry now=melee then add boomerang as a separate weapon. They could also just do more to differentiate the different Prowler types and make stuff besides Fighting and Assist stronger. Bomb and Protection are already decent just not decent enough to warrant use over the norm(Protection MAYBE). Gathering could be changed around a bit to actually be good but it isn't necessary. Healing is kind of held back by the fact that we don't really need heals in Monster Hunter. They could change the way they get more gauge though(make it so you just get more gauge when weapon is put away, not when out of the area of a large monster). Also give them more buff skills I guess. Speed up the melee combo a bit as well.

Like he said. Its certainly viable if you mix in melee attacks and boomerangs. The lunging attack and weapon boomerang spin are both really good. Otherwise there are places where people try to brainstorm different builds.
