I did probably the most common mistake when I started getting into watches a couple years ago and bought so many watches. Ranging about $100-$1500 watches. I had 56 watches total and have down sized to 8 recently. I’m done with what I call the “affordable” range and I’ve definitely got the quantity out of my system and going forward I want to focus on getting it to maybe 5 watches or so that are high quality.

While not a cartier, I own my grandfather's Seiko "tank" from the mid 80's. It was a retirement gift from his employer and it is incredible. Obviously, my sentimental attachment to it is nothing that can be matched, but it was always on his wrist and that's how I remember it. Engraved on the case back and everything. But the case shape and small size is just so timelessly classy on the wrist. I have "larger" wrists and rarely "dress up", but I wear it all the time on a bunch of different straps from brown leather to a gold mesh bracelet that matches the case perfectly. I'm getting winded here, but if you're eyeing the Cartier, go for it. It's timeless pure class for good reason.

If we want to be minimalistic, the only watch mandatory in your collection is the 36mm Explorer. Perfect versatile size, dress up or down without any issue, pure straight to the point design, understated but classy, classic black dial. You like watches used as intended then you don't really need any of the divers. The smartwatch is a no as you don't do sport much. The Quartz is cool and I think every serious collector need one in his collection but I would suggest something with a 9F or a chronomaster. The Hamilton would be the 2nd choice as having a white dial is really the next step but I feel its a little too close to the Explorer in term of philosophy (field/exploring watch with similar design/size). My choice for a white dial that would make a perfect dress watch would be the new Cartier Santos Medium size (35mm). My 3rd choice would definitely be a Grand Seiko Quartz (36~38mm) with a 9F and a something different than Black or White (probably a Silver or Blue dial. Even if they do nice Champagne too).

I had a CWC manual winding watch. Loved it until I dropped it on the floor and the second hand flew off under the glass. Had it repaired then wore it in the sea once on holiday (it was supposedly water resistant). The salt then destroyed the movement, but I managed to get £30 for it from a watch repairer who bought it. With that money I bought a classic Swatch with a white face, luminous hands and black strap. Never had a problem with that. A shame, as the CWC watch did look great.

@@BarkandJack 16 year service intervals is incredible too. I'm getting my wife the small version for our 10th anniversary, and just have to decide whether to pair it with the Santos Medium or Tank Large for myself. Another in the running is of course the Reverso Tribute Medium (which I fell in love with after your review), but like you I am just concerned that I wouldn't wear it enough to justify the cost in my collection. The Santos could be dressy enough for me, while also being a good everyday type piece.

On a serious note though, I have had a few conversations with folks about it, and I think the consumption of watches and mics are completely different. Mics are essential for recording, and most of the time there is zero emotions attached to them and it's also easy to demonstrate the qualities of the mics by sharing the recordings. Watches on the other hand are inessential and chock full of emotional attachment. The point is that the approach to the emotional item probably ought to be a bit different and have some aspect of story associated with it as opposed to just technical reviews. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this though.

Great video mate! That was long overdue. I was literally laughing out loud as I watched. We have nearly identical taste in watches. The foundation of my collection - the one I'll never sell - is the 214270 39mm Explorer (mk2). I just picked up the new 36mm Explorer for my son. He'll get it in a few years. I had a Black Bay Steel and it came and went pretty quickly. I had the blue version of your Seamaster and sold it pretty quickly, but I agree about the depth. I loved staring at that dial. Next watches on my radar: two tone Rolex Date Just, new Polar Explorer II and I absolutely want a Panerai. I'm also completely torn between the new 43mm IWC Big Pilot and the 41mm IWC Spitfire Chronograph. I prefer the look of the Big Pilot, but I'm worried it's a bit too big. I tried on the Spitfire Chrono recently and it's fantastic. Anyway, great collection and great video. Really well done. The best watch content on CZcams. Keep it up!

It’s hilarious how many watch channels rave about a given piece then they are flipping it for something else within months. Does nobody hang in to a watch for keeps anymore? That said, the new IWC offerings are amazing. Both Chrono and 43mm Big Pilot are crazy good offerings. Best bit being you can just walk into an AD and buy them, non of this secondary dealer tax or don’t call us we’ll call you horse business. Are you missing a mechanical chrono? A zenith maybe? Only downside to IWC is you’ll take a haircut if you flip it months later.
