How any of Reds employees ever get the idea betraying him is a good idea is beyond me.

i think it was more that guy wanted to do more but red was angry because he specifically told him no drugs if he had gone beyond his station but without breaking orders red would have been happy with the increase in cash flow
Arrogance. The belief one is immune from harm, or smarter than Red.
If Red doesn't know what you are doing, it only means he hasn't found out. And he finds out EVERYTHING. It's just a matter of the offender starting out in the lead and Red always catching up to them.
I love how ridiculously intimidating Red can get out of nowhere. Had my armpits sweating like crazy.

How Spader portrays Red is amazing, how he can be so calm yet menacing
Generally speaking if a situation is going downhill and/or highly chaotic the calmest person in the room is the most dangerous OR the craziest
Same when he voiced Ulltron
Like Hannibal Lector. Without the cannibalism part.
His calmness is what makes him so menacing. You can sense that he could kill you without a second thought. And it wouldn't be out of anger or hatred or fear, just removing something in his way.
This is simply the best series I have ever seen. May Spader live forever.

Was a good show in the beginning, they took it too far as every other show after few seasons, but this garbage took it waaaaaay over the line with woke crap in the late seasons and this last bits we are getting in season 9 are just horrible
Excluding liz I would agree
I love Spader. He can play this bad guy that is freaking amazing but then he can turn around and play a character like Alan Shore, who was sarcastic and funny as hell. Honestly, he is way underrated.

3:22 Dembe knew that Red had made up his mind once Red decided what to speak on, and checks outside to make sure no one will hear the gunshots. He then looks back at Red, unconcerned. That was Red's cue. You'll see Red glance, ever briefly, at Dembe.
Cinematography is incredible

Seems like there must be degrees to it all. He doesn't mind alcohol. And I remember him saying he was partial to a hash and opium combo.
They show over the course of the show there are things Red just won't deal in. Human Trafficking being another one.
Not drugs exactly, human trafficking and methamphetamines are his lines. Seems like the more addictive hardline opioids are what he refuses to run(despite his maybe more amicable usage of opioids himself)
Betrayal is never taken lightly.
Nor should it be.

Whether it's make-believe TV / Movie OR real life - THAT mantra is golden.
Loyalty is Everything.
It's the best quality to aspire to, and the worst thing to forsake, given the Ninth Circle.
Smokey slipped up - he said he didn't know Martin, then he said Martin was a family guy who had a kid

Andrew and sony that smokey talked about not martin.
No he didn't
Smokey have have tried empathy and just threw out there Martin was a family man as means to show two sides of a coin - when placed in the hot seat and you are holding a person’s life, would you try to save? Try to kill? Try to compromise?
It’s easy to kill without seeing the guy
But when you are there in the same room?
And your boss has proven time and time again, do not lie to Red.
Martin lied
If Martin had told the truth instead of hidden it - Red would’ve been forgiving and maybe just given the fine
But Martin lied then confronted Red saying not taking part wouldn’t be profitable - Red does not need money.
All he needs is his reputation - Martin soiled it then rubbed it in his face, insubordination which there was only one answer
Like Fredo claiming not to know Johnny Ola then letting it slip.
Spader is such a brilliant actor.
James Spader is a absolute Genius. This is one of his best character

Smokey never met Walcott, but knew he had kids. That sealed Smokey's fate too.
"If it was up to me - and lets all reflect on how awesome it is that it isn't..." is such a great line. Didn't we all have such a moment in our lives, thinking "thank the gods I don't have to decide here lol"
This actually is every Spader character in a nutshell. Professional, calm on the outside and an underlying pool of sadness that is permanently fed by the things other people would get outraged by.
Hmmmm.... imagine Alan Shore having Reddington for a client.
Red is so goddamn cool. He has this literal grim reaper of death himself vibe to him in these scenes.

I cannot imagine any actor, and there are some brilliant ones out there, who could have portrayed Raymond Reddington better than James Spader. In fact, I can't think of anyone who would come close to his portrayal.
The story about the flame is so poetic and how it tied in to offing Martin

I just realized that James Todd Spader, played Daniel Jackson in the Stargate movie (1994)
My interpretation of what Red's saying: He tells that whole story about training to not mind committing unspeakable acts by not minding the pain of a flame. He then does it himself, flinches, and says "I mind." The listener (I agree with another comment that he's made this speech before, and that Dembe's familiar with it) is supposed to think Red minds doing the unspeakable acts. But they should know him well enough to know that isn't true. Red minds the _flame._ He can't hold his hand in it and not mind. The _listener_ is the flame, and it is _their_ unspeakable acts he minds.
This is one of reds best ever scenes. It shows who he is. How he can be brutal but lives by a moral code, which is the reason for this very execution. Classic scene.
This show would have been best ever made in history without Liz and her SpongeBob husband.

James Spader is an underrated legendary actor, he is defiantly on par with Robert Downey jr. and Jude Law.

My only qualm with Red is that there is no real punishment for the crimes committed against him. Sure people get shot, almost always, but what sort of punishment is that?
As the Count of Monte Cristo said, "A few moments of inconvenience is hardly justice for all the pain they caused. " (Paraphrase) All the trouble these people cause and their punishment is a few moments of pain? Seems a little off-balance for a man like Reddington.

If every dealer was killed on the spot it may make others less interested in the job. Sure some would still deal and take desperate measures but when they are killed on the spot it may eventually start getting better. It’s only getting worse by allowing it
As long as people want it and will pay for it there will be dealers. If you get caught dealing in China you die. They don't seem to run out of dealers to kill.

Nope, it just makes the price go up and the people who are willing to get involved even more dangerous. Just legalize it all and start regulating it. That will tank the profits of the cartels and then we can put money towards drug addiction treatment. As long as there is a profit motive, the drugs will come.
