The opening track is my favorite. The "I was a child in the ivy then" passage is so remarkable, and then the final explosion at the end caps off the song beautifully.
Great review, though. Pretty much agree across the board (though, this is my favorite FF record as of now).

Been waiting for this review for two weeks, and I'm really glad you saw the same haunting beauty in it that I did. I feel like this album couldn't have come with better artwork, because it's so reflective of the somnolence and weight of it all. It felt like a dark tide was washing up on me during On Another Ocean, or like I was standing at a cliff-face while the surf sprayed around me on I Should See Memphis. I was a little surprised to hear your hesitation of that song, because the ending violin section made me cry when I first heard it. This album's a 9 for me, but I'm glad to hear your praise for aspects of it! Thanks again for reviewing.

God, I love this album. The ambient, lower register, "mumbling", and all that gets a little tiring at first and I couldn't even listen all the way through the first time, but the more you listen and get familiar the better it feels. Every distinct melody and motif just hits so much harder after the tense continuous build-up of the album. The themes in each song are just so satisfying and worth the wait and when Third of May hits... Goddamn. I'm a FF fanboy so it's hard to say this is my favorite, but I can't help, but feel like I would be a little disappointed after a while with the release of this album if they just played it safe and put out some catchy but well layered harmony focused songs like usual(not that that's a fair or complete summary of their work). I'm glad they're experimenting and growing and it leaves excitement for the future if there are any more projects to come.

I didn't really like this album as much to start off with. I mean, the first tracks left me feeling very weird about the new sound. I think what I had loved about the two albums previous, was the dynamic sound and very folksy sound. Now, it seemed jumbled.

While I enjoy Anthony's reviews, it's almost a given that he is going to completely miss on an integral track on a record. On this one it was I Should See Memphis, which is an absolutely stunning piece that lies outside of the safety zone for this band in a way none of the more bombastic experimental tracks do. The lyrical tone and very deliberate lyrical pacing are a severe departure from the tried and true formula, and all the more effective for it. That slight hesitation when Robin sings the title line near the end of the song conveys and resolves so much of the narrative emotion... Said simply, this song will latch onto your soul and haunt you. Most compelling track on the album for that reason, though some of the others mentioned may be easier listens.

Very well said, that song is the subtle climax of Robins exploration as far as i’m concerned. It’s a gradual realization of how the conflicts of history are also reflected on an interpersonal level as we grow divided by time and direction, an acknowledgment of the misunderstanding and pride that causes this conflict, and finally a promise to move forward with the interests of one another in mind. Beautiful track

Anthony, I think this album will only continue to grow on you with the rest of the year. Take note of how this album is a little meta. It's sets out to obliterate any expectations that casual folk fans (the "Starbucks CD rack" fans) might have. It's not leaning into the Mumford and Sons fake-folk motif. I mean, the "mumble folk" opener compares and contrasts with the super melodic opener of the first album. Reminds me of when Thom Yorke described Kid A; he wanted to ditch harmony and needed rhythm. I feel like Robin wanted to ditch formula and needed experimentation.

People probably gonna call out Anthony's previous, somewhat unfavorable comments on Fool's Errand in contrast to his positive take here, but if you all actually watch the channel you know that he lends a lot of credit to how something works in the flow of the tracklist. It's actually great because fewer and fewer people today sit down for the full experience of an album in how it's meant to be heard. So the fact that there is a change of heart here is a testament to the nature of context and how things can function more broadly in music than if a song is good vs. bad. I already knew this album was great. Happy you think so too Fantano.

I kind of disagree with you about the intro and outro, I think that those two tracks are the strongest and take me on the most interesting journey in the album. My favorite three songs are the intro, third of may/odaigahara, and the outro.

    Dear Anthony,
"The Empryean" by John Frusciante is a great album that I believe you should review or ,at the very least, have an opinion on. I know it's 8 years old but I think it's still worth reviewing, it's very conceptual and is very grounded in Johns well-known guitar playing as well as including a number of other various string instruments/sounds, rather than his more recent 'avant-garde' electronic work. It contains a beautiful cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" and, although it touches heavily on religious/spiritual ideas in each song, the lyrics can be perceived as having relevance within todays world/current affairs. In my opinion it's a very good album and shouldn't be overlooked or left untouched. Anthony, you probably wont read this, but if you do, it would be much appreciated if you at least say something about it. Thanks for all of your hard work and reviews,
    Nick.

I like the review and I really like you but,
    wtf.
I am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar
    awkward?
it's so manic and so good, and you didn't talk about the shift in - Naiads, Cassadies?
and and and. an 8?! this is easily more ambitous, grand (wtf u just said it wasn't as grand?) and MORE(!) focused as their previous two albums, and even as not a big big Fleet Foxes fan this album is easily my AOTY and probably will be. forever. traaaaaans-
also, pro-ba-bly my only problem with this album is that I now see how inferior the last two actually are in comparison with this one.
feeling a light to decent 9 on this thing.
    transition

Liked it slightly less than you, but still very enjoyable. Felt nice to hear some new tunes from them. I described this album to a friend as the Fleet Foxes' "Close to the Edge." Probably an ignorant statement, but I felt it was sufficient to convey its complexity.

I've listened to this since the leak, and now that it has settled it my mind, I totally agree with your analysis of it. I appreciate the evolution of the band in song structure and composition, and even though it didn't all pan out, I am hopeful for the future. Robin already teased an album title for LP4 (in jest?). I've read a few complaints that the album was boring or slow, which I certainly disagree with. The beginning burns slowly, but I would say that the mumble-singing he does in track 1 is enough to draw me in. By the end of the song I'm sold.

I miss music discussion, these memes are dumb, this is still a great channel, but why can't more people discuss the actual music at hand.... I'm excited to spin the new Elder album, and maybe I'll check out this record, too, (not a huge fan of fleet Foxes).... But man I'm blasting dead roots stirring right now and it's so heavy and fuzzed out, it has great energy :) Always preferred lore though for it's more prog and post rock elements!
Cracked-up sounds like a grower, and I've heard nothing but good things about it c: it's been a good month for music!
ANTHONY you missed the new artificial brain record though!!!

This album is so brilliant, I don't think there's a bad or even mid tier song on this record. This album takes me to another dimension when I listen to it in full. I think this album is a decent 9. Also... Helplessness Blues is easily a 10/10 and is my second favorite album of 2010s.

I haven't ever enjoyed an album review as much, excellent job! There's one record that I would absolutely like to hear your opinion of. It's a very underground album from '69 called Touch, very profound and almost a well-kept secret among the proletariat of music, but I think it needs more exposure. I tremendously enjoy the Fleet Foxes, and Touch has proved to be one of the most astounding things I've heard. If you ever get to it, I would love to hear what you have to say of it; I don't think you will be bored. Great and insightful video! Regards :)
