This is the only game where I've seen a trailer show us so much and still leave us with more questions than what we had before. This will truly be one of the DLCs of all time. You can call this a gameplay analysis if you want, but we're not sure what this is.

The boss in 5:48-7:20 doesn't look like just one creature, but several humanoids sharing a costume, like a Chinese parade dragon puppet, which might go with the Eastern interpretation

When he’s winding up that breath attack, you can see that there’s one guy standing on the lower guy.
It really does look like something beneath the cloak is wielding the dog-creature like a weapon more so than it being that creature.

Notice how Mesmer has an aspect of everything the erdtree and golden order hate/fought against, he’s using briar magic, he’s got snakes, and his armor has dragon imagery on it
I feel like Mesmer is really old. Like he impaled the giants, but then committed all of the sins and was banished to the shadow realm. But he says mother, his mother is either a female Miquella and therefore an offspring of Mogh or his mother is Marika and therefore he must be ancient to be so forgotten. To be considered The Impaler he must be involved with the mountain top battle with the giants. Marika was still married to Godfrey. Could his mother be Rennala and therefore he’s Radagon offspring hence the hair.
Questions: where is the gloam eyed queen, Godwyn (maybe Mesmer is his twin), Rosus?Miquella’s took off all his possessions (don’t we do that with 3 fingers?).

@john-paul3271 I'm think he could have red hair due to his seemingly heavy participation in the genocide of the giants, this being in line with the interpretation that Radagon has red hair due to a longstanding curse on Marika by the Giants.
What's interesting is that if we go with the interpretation that Messmer is Marika's son, despite the fact he is emblazoned with so much iconography that is heretical to the present Golden Order, his dialogue still seems to indicate he has at least his own brand of loyalty to the Golden Order. Similar to Morgott, he seems very critical of the Tarnished, mentioning a lack of grace multiple time's, and using that as a basis to question "Marika's" intentions.
Maybe Mesmer is the reason why the golden order hates all those things.

8:02 as for that incantation, I believe that was a charm incantation that you theoretically get from Miquella's remembrance, because in the bewitching branch item description, Miquella was loved by everyone, and the incantation and the bewitching branch both have the same color. And since they were butterflies while casting that incantation, it confirms that its from Miquella, since Malenia also had butterflies, and they're siblings.
Please not Miquella's remembrance. I am hoping we get to spare him

The double snakes on Mesmer seem most similar to the duelists, maybe he's connected with them? (the duelist's set says "The snake is viewed as a traitor to the Erdtree, and the audience delighted in seeing these bronze effigies beaten and battered", maybe he's the original traitor that the symbols are referencing?)
I honestly assumed he was connected to rykard, with the snake and fire motif he has going on.
This, and "Messmer's flames" are very suspicious too. Fire is prohibited by Golden Order after all.
Perhaps this prohibition is enforced because of someone who used it against Erdtree?
We finally got the "Aspect of the Crucible: Wings" attack confirmed, kek. I've wanted that for awhile so to see the wings, using the same animation as the Crucible Knights but scaled down, was really amazing.
It looks to be an AoW though since the character has a twin blade and a shield and nothing to cast incantations with, unless they brought back casting weapons from DS2.

I think the Twinblade the Tarnished is wielding must have a special ability to act as a catalyst.
I think this because if you look closely that's the same Twinblade used by the Knight Boss the Tarnished shows off those martial arts style kicks against. We can tell this enemy is a boss because of the gold fog wall in the background.
So if this is a boss weapon it'd have a unique ability. This Knight doesn't seem to have any relation to the Crucible at all from his appearance.
Ultimately it wouldn't make sense for a Boss weapon of a seeming non-Crucible related character to have a Crucible Related Ash of War attached to it.
Therefore it must be a catalyst weapon.
Or he's an Elite enemy right before a boss fight.
@@asdergold1 Could be, but it still seems to be a unique weapon given that's the only enemy in the trailer we see wielding it and we only see a Tarnished wielding it presumably after the Knight has been killed given that Messmer is probably the last boss of the DLC.
The boss reminds me of the tradition of weraring a dragon mask and having multiple people under the same costume

Miyazaki confirmed that the Lion Dance was the inspiration for it in an interview already. So, you're spot on.
Right before the Lion spews the grey stuff, one can see it's made up of a dude standing on another dude holding the lions head. In the blue flower field, those are ships or the back structure of ships, 16-17th century style ships. Additionally I think this DLC works like the new Lords of the Fallen with the "shadow realm" same world, just distorted second version.

the bear incantation is dragon cult stuff, since the rune bears are technically dragons. you can even see stone scales on them if you look hard enough.

I heard that apparently in an interview, they said that we’re getting 8 new weapon categories, which may explain some of the interesting weapons and abilities.

Now we can challenge Godfrey on equal terms.
So a little promotional doodad released by Fromsoft describes this place as "where the goddess Marika first stepped foot" which was "purged in an unsung battle" and "set ablaze by Messmer's flame."
So it ISN'T a remixed version of the world, but a separate region where Numen (like Marika) presumably originated.

Edit: before anyone asks again, the reason I was concerned about the dlc not being on ps4, was because the dlc for horizon forbidden west was locked to the ps5 because the ps4 couldn’t handle it, and I was hoping that wouldn’t happen but couldn’t be sure.

If you look at the boss throwing the lightning bolt you can see it is actually 2 things on top of each other also if you look at Mesmers eye it is the same as the dragon communion eyes so potentially Mesmer is a different outcome instead of turning to a magma wyrm when you follow the dragon cult. And the curved sword that the red lady in the blue area reminds me of the blue dancer that sealed the rot god.
The dude has snakes, wields something similar to fire, has dragon eyes and armor. This dude is doing a "trigger the entire golden order" speed run

THE WINGS, THE FINAL CRUCIBLE INCANTATION
That weird omen/misbegotten/lion thing is two dudes (probably omens) in a lion dance suit. You can see it when it stands up at 6:38, and the eyes look like blank gemstones (because it's a mask, not an actual head).
The shot at 1:15 really blew me away, because I was expecting something closer to one big legacy dungeon, like Farum Azula.
"Ok so they put most of their effort into creating a whole new region" I thought, until 1:32 hit and suddenly I'm looking at a legacy dungeon the size of Farum Azula, and judging by its distance from the tree it isn't even the main attraction.
Like I get they had 2 years to work in this, but MARIKA'S TITS!

That Messmer Person might be a sibling to Miquella and Malenia. He/she seems to refer to a Person making you (maybe) a Lord, as mother, so might be refering to Marika.
If this is a different reality where certain key facts went differently... Mesmer could be bizarro Melina. She too refers to her mother more than any other character.
They've been pretty consistent on only giving characters red hair if there's a good reason.

14:27 besides Volcano Manor, one other noteworthy appearance of snake symbolism is with the gladiator duelists, whose armor and some weapons (IE viper bite fists, coil shield) are all described and depicted as adorned with bronze snakes that apply the Shabriri's Woe debuff? IIRC the item descriptions / lore is something about 'snakes tell the audience to root against this guy'? Maybe Messmer is the reason why snakes are seen as a reviled symbol....???
14:45 I think that's actually the red snake buddy wrapped around them, you can see in other shots that the snake is kinda intertwined all across their body.
I think Messmer is the third child of Radagon and Marika judging by the M name and the red hair. Marika also gave way for the Tarnished to get the throne rather than her children, explaining why he’s jealous.

theres an interview on ign and some details on the collectors edition preorder page that clear some things up. messmer is a demigod, miquella fled here and shed his divinity similar to ranni, its a different zone probably in the area between the divine towers "the size of limgrave" (not sure if this includes caelid), marika came here originally and something about the erdtree cast the land into shadow, and miquella came here afterwards for some reason. the big fire giant thing is apparently a weapon, and there's a fuck ton of bodies burning inside it. Im assuming messmer created it since he's the one that is setting everything on fire. very interested in seeing what its like

@@azeria1 personally i think its related to the eternal cities. that one big city reminded me of the acropolis in nokron, and they just kinda look similar. the seat of the original "ancient dynasty" mentioned in I think some oracle item description. personally I love tarnished archaeologist as well, so I'm really hoping its related to that stuff because it would be cool as shit if we could see the seat of power of the previous empire
@@charlesgarand That's Berserk leaking into the series again! Guts and co fight a wickerman like enemy that's powered by sacrificed souls when they get to Elfhiem/Skellig Island. Good to see Miyazaki is continuing to show his love for Berserk.
I have a counter-theory on the wickerman type thing, and it stems from the voice-over during the scene; "they were never saints. They just happened to be on the losing side of a war." I think that was a warcrime weapon made by the fire giants, who as we know are believed to have been the original blacksmiths, are associated with a deep red flame (but then so is Destined Death and Bloodflame), were the losers in a war, and have that same general shape and emphasis towards the chest that it seems to be emulating--and the lines seem like a possible, semi-direct reference to the pity that their limited description has garnered in the base game. "Tyrants toppled by tyrants" is a pretty GRRM story beat, and with all the references to Brythonic mythology the fire giants may be a reference to the Fomorians.
9:27 is definitely similar to Dragon Communion, which might have something to do with rune bears. Rune bears are bears that have eaten dragon hearts, so we might have to kill the bear version of a magma wyrm for that incantation
They also have Gravel Stone in them. Hilariously the best attempt at making others dragons, but by complete accident.
The DLC seems to take place in something called the "Realm of Shadows" since the voice towards the end says something like "Touch the hand and travel to the Realm of Shadows". And since there seems to be nothing in common with existing Lands Between, I believe that FromSoftware did make an ENTIRE new map.
I think that castle at 4:35 is actually farum azula before it got the kansas treatment. look at the pillars out front, they're the same as the ones found in Placidusax's boss arena. plus the big beast man/abomination thing wields lightning, both beast men and lightning magic is found in crumbling farum azula. That deathroot looking stuff rusty pointed out could actually be seen all over the main aboveground area, so it could be anything.
Pot go brrr = happy souls community
I think a lot of these boss fights are alternate versions of existing enemies, the blue flower area that you said may be underground is either nokron or nokstella, the lion guy with morgott looking feet is Morgott if the lion chose him instead, hence the omen horns, and Messmer is an unmentioned child of Radagon

The big lion looking thing, if you slow it down frame by frame, you see multiple sets of legs and torsos.. I think it's an eastern dragon parade 'costume'.

I saw someone mention on reddit that the mystery character at 3:53 looks nearly identical (at least in outfit) to the figure in the carian inverted statue! The only hint the statue's description has towards their identity is "Statuette of a scholar, with ground and sky inverted." so it's possible that they're not the exact figure, and that's just what carian scholars wear? The area they're in reminds me of the eternal cities, so maybe they're an ancient astrologer who has extended their lifespan somehow

throwing my hat in the ring to say something probably at least a dozen people have speculated without me knowing, but i'm looking at this, seeing many areas that reflect areas we already know, this looks like a mirror world, a... shadow of the lands between you could say. there was the walk up to stormveil, what looked to be an alternate house marais, the sword dancer looked like the weeping peninsula, the area at the beginning makes me think of caelid without the rot
For all my lore nerds! Miquella and st trina lore pretty much confirm this is not the lands between (and miyazaki confirmed in IGN interview today too) so this new land is either: literally a new land, a sort of parralel universe, or its within miquellas head (like in fias head in base game)
The portrait could either be: fia and her husaband, marikas parents (making the new antagonist her brother), or new characters.
Also there's a bunch more but i feel like lore dumping is probs best left from yt comments!

I think the people in the portrait are the ruler of this land and Miquella. We see the old dude later in the trailer with some sort of thorns in him and it would make sense for Miquella to have the ruler under his control, being so manipulative and all. Also the person on the right has the same veiled appearance that Miquella usually has.

it feels like the lands between but off and with more deathroot, the lamprey looking thing sucking the tarnished reminds me of wormfaces, the atmosphere is brown-ish and stuff, I wonder if it's inside godwyn's or some other demigod's dream similar to how an alternate yharnam exists inside the old hunters dream in the bloodborne dlc

It’s seems to be set in the “shadow” of everything. So that’s why somethings are so similar. Or we are playing in the dying mind of miquella, as it tries to make its own version of the lands between.
10:20 major Dancer of the boreal valley vibes here. but the main thing I want to focus on here is 11:42. THAT IS ORPHAN OF KOS' WEAPON. I'm pretty sure that move was lifted from that fight. Also the character's outfit at 8:20 is VERY Bloodborne-esque, so now im hoping we get some kind of connection.
It does seems to be a reused ash.

I think the bear spell gas a connection to dragon communion. The blossoming horns and red hair suggest this might be a product of a failure or partial transformation

The lion boss is most likely either the first omen or the source of the omen due to its fangs and horns which are common omen traits. Also when messmer talks about his "mother" it is mostlikely the formless mother since it looks like he uses blood flame and thorn sorceries and incantations

My guess is that the "Fire Giant" is gonna be a Wicker Man. Ala Celtic mythology. Check out Cuchulain's Noble Phantasm from Fate/Grand Order, and it's pretty similar. And the monster at @11:48? That's a Nuckelavee, yet another reference to Orcadian myth. An area to the north of scotland.

Which leads me to think he’s either a version of Miquella like Radagon/Marika or a sibling.
He directly calls Marika mother, so those are the most likely choices. Especially given Miyazaki confirmed Miquella entered the land of shadows in the steps of Marika, and the tarnished, in turn, in the steps of Miquella.
Also, as noted, Messmer is likely a play on ‘mesmer’ as in to hypnotize, and its stated Miquella’s ability to enrapture and capture the hearts of those around him make him the most terrifying empyrean. A form of hypnosis, to be sure.

I think it's some kind of grafted enemy. Godwyn couldn't possibly be a boss unless we access a dream like we did for Fia, since his body is so horribly twisted by the cursemark and his soul has passed on. I'm all the theory that it's based on a Chinese Dragon personally

One is the same overview image of the Shadow lands, but it features a tarnished riding Torrent! Which made me think that when Melina fucks off/arrives when she saves you in the intro sequence maybe she is going to/coming back from the shadow lands!?

I have a feeling that Messmer is Miquella. Either another alter ego or a corrupted version of him after being in Mohg's special sauce for too long. Messmer is even a play on mesmerize, named so after Franz Mesmer who laid the groundwork for hypnotism.
Basically Evil Name Changed Miquella. Thought about it too.
