This is a really well done comparison. Because the 1235u is often for sale around the same price Of the ryzen 5600u and this really puts it into perspective how close they are. Someone mentioned that the H series would be a lot better, of course it is, it also cost a lot more to, I think this is a good apples to apples comparison of the U series for both. 12th gen really is a big leap ahead of 11th gen and I think either one outside of gaming would be a good choice for anybody.
Nice review. As laptop user - i would love to hear more about noise, batter life and options to upgrade RAM . Out of the cheap laptops, HP 250 G9 has 2 RAM sockets, while other laptops usually only have 1 RAM socket and often 8 GB of RAM welded to the motherboard. Not using Dual Channel with an integrated graphics is a performance hit.
Hey James, in this video does the i5-1235U have the integrated Intel Iris Xe, or the older Intel UHD graphics built in? Just did some reading as saw that some 12th Gen processors come with the older Intel UHD integrated graphics setup, and was curious if this had any impact on results. I'm still shopping around for the right laptop for myself and wondered about this. Many thanks!
The i5-1235U has the same Iris XeE with 80 EU as the 11th generation Core i5 chips. The 12th generation i3 graphics is branded as UHD - its the same Xe LP Architecture but with only 64 EUs enabled - a slight increase vs. the 11th generation i3 models which were 48 EU.
Very nicely done. The side by side comparison was amazing 👍 I have a question: would the screen refresh rates affect the gaming performance? Was it same in this test?
Battery life and thermals are really laptop specific so outside the scope of what I was looking at - both systems have similar power behaviour however - boosting up to 30W short term boost, then falling down to 20W and then back down to 15W.

I am hesitating alot for a laptop and this comparaison was very helpful, thank you. I was concerned with the lower L1 and L2 cache of the Ryzen, but it dosen't translate in lower gaming performance. Since the laptop option with Ryzen 5625U core is much cheaper ( 650 vs 800 ), I'll endure the smaller 2X4GB soldered ram. I think it has an open spot for another ram stick anyway if I really want more ( keeping in mind the RAM stick must be of a compatible model ). Plenty of games to comfortably run with that anyway. Again, great detailed analysis.
If u want to do gaming you need at least 16gb ram and it should be dual channel caus the igpu shares the ram and dual channel ram is a big boost in performance
would like to see PCIe gen3 vs gen4 not be ignored. Gen4 is twice the speed so if a given Intel MB/notebook supports it and the AMD one does not that can tilt the scale for some use cases.
I'd really love to if some companies would like to supply me with test systems - unfortunately I have to buy them myself currently and so can only get one or two in at a time to test then sell on. Can you say something about the thermals of both chips? I've just bought a Dell Vostro with the Ryzen 5 5625u, but it heats A LOT. I don't know if it's the chip's fault or a design flaw by Dell, but I'm actually considering returning it (it has 14 days return policy) and getting the i5 1235u version instead, even if the performance will be slightly worse. The one I got heats up so much that it's actually uncomfortable to use, and Dell made the cooling in such a way that all the hot air is being blown STRAIGHT at the display, which I'm concerned may damage the display in the long term
One of the most important factors not mentioned in this video is the actual power consumption or the performance per watt. Recent Intel CPUs are pretty bad for mobile devices because of their poor efficiency.

Sooo close, it truly depends what you use it for. And the alure of "efficiency cores" is great if you plan to take the laptop on trips or places. But, the old way of thinking of 6 cores with SMT.. it just works. So what is better? Eh, I don't know... they are so close.

The Iris XE is on a par with the 5625U's Radeon IGP on paper, and can beat it in some titles, but it is the maturity of the Radeon drivers which give consistently decent performance where as Iris XE is more hit and miss.
Here is i5 1235u vs R5 5500u.... So, here it pays more to get the intel. Or depending on the promotion, we have the Ryzen 7 5600u. So AMD seems like a better option
I wanted to point out that you are using a ryzen 5 on a 14 inch display and comparing it with i5 on a 16 inch display, so wouldn't it affect the performance, as rendering and processing for that extra 2 inches WILL have some impact, won't it?
I wouldn't expect a particular difference in performance in this case - both have similar cooling solutions and displays are the same resolution. Both operate in more or less the same power ranges as well. Of course an apples-to-apples comparison would have been better, but I buy these systems myself and record reviews and disassembly/upgrade guides, so wanted one of each. Which processor is more powerful with a single-channel RAM of 8 GB? AMD Ryzen 5 5500U or Intel Core i5 1235U? Is it worth paying ~$60 extra to buy a laptop with an i5-1235U processor?

The 1235u feels scammy to me because base clock speed is 1.3ghz but the boost is 4.4ghz so it's like they designed a chip that will only do well in benchmarks but not long term use
Amd ryzen is on a highly power optimized EUV manufacturing process thanks to TSMC where as intel 7 process is multi patterning manufacturing process that's less effective in low power chips. For that reason ryzen can drive clock speeds higher without spending a lot of power intel needs to keep clock speed lower to reduce powerconsumption. This might change this year with intel finally moving to EUV process for their meteor lake processors.
I want to buy a laptop for programming, which processor will be more powerful when working with single-channel RAM on 8gb? AMD Ryzen 5 5500U or Intel Core i5 1135G7? Is it better to pay an extra $70-80 to buy a laptop with an Intel Core i5 1235U processor?
Single core 5500u < 1135g7 < 5600u < 1235u . For programming any of the above cpu is fine, however intel tends to be better for python a bit. For programming apart from cpu ram is also important and if win 11 os 8 gb is not sufficient and min is 16 gb. Better to ensure it is upgradable upto 32gb to be future proof - not mandatory but better. With amd you get more cores and little weak cores, whereas in Intel you get less cores and stronger cores. For programming any cpu would do fine, not much difference and like said above ram is another important factor. Apart from these 2 choose any laptop with cheaper price and better specs like display, features, build quality, durability etc.
@@m1kus960 for programming i3 is ok, but heavy loads it can't manage I guess. Better is 5500u or 1135g7 in my opinion with atleast 16gb ram. I would say avoid intel 12th gen for a year as they brought new hybrid arch, though p cores are great. I3 is good but manageable.

For that reason ryzen can drive clock speeds higher without spending a lot of power intel needs to keep clock speed lower to reduce powerconsumption.
This might change this year with intel finally moving to EUV process for their meteor lake processors.
👍👍👍🤣
Base clock speed means nothing. It'll never operate that low while programs are running
@@jyothiradityak242 I found an i3 1215U laptop for as much as $160 cheaper than an R5 5500U or i5 1135G7
@@m1kus960 12 gen is really great but they have messed up with hybrid arch to lower power consumption and heat. Also intel is a bit expensive.
@@m1kus960 the thing is with i3 you can't manage for more than 2-3 yrs imo.
Im thinking of buying asus zenbook, but couldnt choose between ryzen 5 5625u or new 12th gen i5. Can somebody suggest for me which one is better
Personally I'd opt for the Ryzen 5 5625U, but neither are bad options.
@@BrueComputing besides, ryzen 5 5625 is cheaper 80 usd.
You being an AMD fan, I must admit intel did some wonders in this gen model and come so far in graphics, they werent even half of what there igpu is achieving today....
There may not be much improvement to be seen for some but its there and its good one... Keep it up
while Intel destroys Ryzen in the H series, it looks like it's really bad at the u series, if it even loses to Ryzen last gen, not even 6000 series.
Can't compare the 6000 series to this, the 6000 series is impossible to find at this price point. 5625u is much more common and a better comparison. And the 5625u is a 2022 chip so not really last gen
You should widen your testings, include video editing and photoshop that is very relevant
Premiere Pro CC and Photoshop CC are a little awkward to test due to having to use Creative Cloud (although I do have a subscription) - any other applications you'd like to see tested?
What workloads in Photoshop CC are CPU limited?
@@BrueComputing I can understand, it's quite complicated for Adobe CC programs to test. What you can do is use alternatives may be. Such as Filmora and do a video render test.
Will look into it, thanks for the suggestion.
@@BrueComputing you always appreciate the suggestio nice 👍
Does any one know of a 14' laptop with m2 AND a SATA HDD space? AMD it Intel are both fine.
no wonder why lenovo had hidden the AMD notebooks and only recommended them if you really searched for them. intel is really a joke ... strongly avoid.
thanks for the video.
Hello, I got Acer Aspire 5 with 16gb ram and Intel i5-1235u. I'm starting coding and I need to install Visual Studio but the recommendents are 1,6ghz minimum processor but mine has 1,30ghz. In Intel site is written that I can boost it to 4,40ghz. Can anyone help me? Can I download Visual Studio?
Lol of course!! The base frequency of a cpu means nothing, it'll never run that low while running actual programs!
