  • The 2010 Macbook Pro is a fairly old device. By upgrading its components, how does it perform and is it worth it?
    Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below!

    I have the 13 inch 2010 Macbook Pro and I thought about upgrading to the cheapest current model which is $1,300, but instead I decided to spend about $300 to breathe some new life into my 2010 model. A few weeks ago I replaced the original hdd (with a larger ssd), upgraded RAM from 4 to 8gb, and replaced the battery since it was dying quickly, and got a backup charger since mine is slowly breaking, but still works. The SSD made a HUGE difference in speed, the RAM has helped especially with having multiple tabs and apps open, the new battery lasts as long as the first one did 10 years ago. Just like new! And with the extra $1000, I built a 2nd gaming PC!

    Great video! I've just bought a 15-inch 2010 Macbook Pro for about $350. The buyer listed it as having a kernel panic problem after booting. Hopefully an SMC reset and a fresh OS install should fix that though! Cheers

    • @twentysevenand
      @twentysevenand Před 6 lety +1

      I have a 2010 15-inch MBP, and it also suffered from kernel panic starting around 2015. I had to send it in to Apple because this model was recalled for the video card, causing the kernel panic. I never knew about the recall, and I didn't get it fixed before. The previous user of your MBP probably didn't know about this, too. The fresh OS install wouldn't have fixed that.

      You know that a Mac Pro would be a lot faster for that sort of thing. You can get a 8-core 3,1 for $200 if you look hard enough. A 4,1 would be more up to date for software compatbility, bit would cost more than twice as much.

    Hi Jason, it's been so helpful to upgrade my laptop. Again, thank you for your video. i have 275 gb SSD and 8 gb ram. I downloaded adobe premiere pro CC and export 40 minutes video (not 4k) and it took over 2 hours. Is it normal? what do you use for video editing? any suggestions?

    • @JasonSummers01
      @JasonSummers01  Před 7 lety +1

      I normally use Davinci Resolve 12.5 for my video editing and it can be found on the Appstore (or on their website). For rendering, I use my desktop because it has a faster CPU and GPU. I think the reason for the 2 hour export time is because of the slower Core 2 Duo processor in the 2010 Macbook. Currently I don't know if there's a way to further improve the performance for the Macbook.

    • @inachung6971
      @inachung6971 Před 7 lety

      I see. Thank you very much for your quick response. It sounds like I may need a new laptop with a faster CPU and GPU for video editing? what specs should I consider when I look for new laptop that I can edit 4K?
      Did you change the battery for your mac? if so, which product did you use? I thought I wouldn't need to change the battery. But it last less than a couple of hours without a charger.

    • @JasonSummers01
      @JasonSummers01  Před 7 lety +1

      I would recommend a laptop that has a discrete GPU (Nvidia graphics card) if possible and at least 8gb of ram if you're going to be editing in 4K.
      I didn't change the battery in my mac but it would have been a good idea because I usually don't get more than 4 hours of use before I need to plug it in. I would suggest buying a replacement battery from Amazon that has reliable reviews if you decide to continue using your mac.

    • @JasonSummers01
      @JasonSummers01  Před 7 lety +2

      Abhijeet Roy I would recommend a 250gb Samsung or 240gb SanDisk SSD. They perform well. This should be enough storage for a while.
      For ram I would recommend 8gb or 16gb of Crucial 1066 mt/s RAM depending on your needs.
      You should be able to order these parts from Amazon. Here's a link for the 8gb of RAM.

      No. You do not need to format the laptop before installing, but you will need a bootable flash drive (there are videos on CZcams on how to create one) or a time machine backup to restore from once you've installed the new SSD. Personally, I didn't upgrade to 16gb of ram because I wouldnt have a use for it.

    Wouldn't you have to re install the OS onto the new drive? just asking because I'm doing the same..

    • @JasonSummers01
      @JasonSummers01  Před 7 lety

      Jeremy Balsters Yes, you would. Before I replaced the original I drive, I created a "Time Machine" backup on an external drive. I did this so I could keep my data. If you want a fresh copy of OS X, you would need to create a bootable flash drive (there are tutorials on how to make one). Once I installed the SSD I booted into settings and restored from the newly created backup.

      @JasonSummers01  Před 7 lety

      ItsThatHydraKid I don't think the computer could use an elgato well because even though it has 8gb of RAM, the cpu is only a core 2 duo. I would recommend using a Windows machine also because the elgato software is up to date for them.

      I would recommend the HP Pavilion 15 or the Dell Inspiron 5000. Although they don't have discrete GPUs (Nvidia), there are several configurations that can include 1080p screens and SSDs as well as 8gb of RAM.

    Anyone watching this.. this model of this MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) (Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1) maxes out at 16 GB RAM, not 8 GB! Apple says it maxes out at 8 GB, but they are wrong, it actually maxes out at 16 GB!
    I bought one last week as a backup MacBook and through research discovered this... Crucial are not hip to this, but OWC are!
    eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/8566DDR3S16P/
    Proof! I upgraded mine.
    i.imgur.com/UIb7mWm.png
    One thing I will say however is even after maxing out the RAM (16 GB) and installing an SSD the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor really holds back this computer... even at 2.4 GHz this MacBook Pro is only really only good as a daily driver, not as a "pro" computer... doing pro tasks this thing lags behind. My MacBook Air 11" from 2012 w/ a 1.7GHz i5 and 4 GB of RAM is faster at most tasks

      I meant when you upgraded to a SSD,files got deleted?? when I replaced my logic board the folder appeared but later it got normal and my macbook 2011 is working good,replacing the logic board and battery was pricey but still cheaper than buying a 2015 MBP,2016 costs too much and no regular USB ports!
