For the early 80's, BC still looks quite good here. Those who think he looks small are likely comparing him to recent bodybuilders. Of course, there's no comparison. But for guys back then, he still looks good in this video (especially for being off rouds).
true. I worked at a nautilus gym in the 80s. some of Those machines are still in use at a local club and smoother and better made than the new stuff. those eearly machnes were heavy and worked flawlesslessly but were LOTS of money. so like everything they cheapened the equipment to make more profit.
As gastrongman said, Mike did indeed use HIT. It wasn't the system he developed, but the one he first learned from jones and continually refined until his death. Mike in fact has stated in interviews and in his writings that in the weeks leading up to a contest that he changed his routine and stopped doing hit. Keep in mind, that when you're getting ready for a contest and cutting your calories in half, you won't be able to train in this manner as the energy demands will be too high
Boyer Coe has stated that he never made any progress doing this HIT routine because there was no warm-ups and not enough rest between the different exercises. He went to Yates style HIT routine and achieved his best ever condition. I have this in an email from him too,, after I pestered him with heaps of annoying questions.
@@pranjal1480 Yates believed in a version of HIT training, as do I. The way they are training in this clip is not the way Mentzer trained at his peak. This is not the way Yates trained. He did body parts once per week, not 3 times per week as demonstrated here. This workout system was formulated during the Arthur Jones loony period. In what way did Yates take Mike's name?
No but it is the forerunner of it. What Mike learned at the Nautilus facility gave him the foundation to develop Heavy Duty. Arthur Jones stated in his column "Last half century of the Iron Game" that he would have his routines reduced to just one set to failure. Almost exactly what Mike had stated earlier. Nautilus set the Stage for HIT and for Heavy Duty and Super Slow Protocol, and for Negative reps, and for the whole idea of working out efficiently and productively.
both guys are clearly in great shape, but what this video shows is the huge difference anabolics make to the well trained athlete in terms of size, performance, condition and strength. Those ppl whos preach that anabolics are like 10% of the physique are clearly wrong.
This was before the fall of Mike Mentzer. He never recovered from his loss to Arnold in the '80 Olympia. It crushed his soul and he died at an early age addicted to drugs and a physical wreck.
How can we tell? I'm not trying to be contentious - for all I know, you're right. I just don't know how someone can tell someone is on steroids on a video by looking, unless s/he was involved with the making of the video perhaps. No disrespect intended to either athlete. I'm not in favor of steroid use, but steroids or no, Mike was a tremendous guy.
No wonder I could never succeed, I had no one standing off to the side telling me what exercise to do, nor was anyone writing down my reps!! Son of a....!!!!!
You guys are forgetting Boyer is not very big to begin with. He competes at 185lbs. In 1980 Mr. Olympia he was 192. In the Masters Mr. Olympia in 1994 he was 205lbs. Mike here is 225-230lbs and his brother Ray is at 255lbs.
Umm if you lift weights and work on enhancing your body, no matter how skinny, you are still a body builder. There are different levels of body building and not everyone can get massive like a roid freak.
@@josecavazos1869 Boyer's form is horrible. If you want more detailed information I cover proper exercise form in detail in my private FB group for HIT List members.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines You do argue. You're extremely childish. You only critisize HIT to help bring attention to your lame channel. Perhaps, HVT isn't really fixing your genetics like you stated a day ago. LOL

Nobody's talking how good Mike looks, just standing there with his clipboard
Because the rest of us are straight.
@TheBatugan77 I'm straight enough to acknowledge a handsome man. Closeted gay people often have trouble with this.
Wow, I.remember using that Nautilous equipment, it was hands down the best machine weights of all time.
OMG. these machines are a lot better than the 95% of the machines of nowdays..
NAUTILUS IS THE BEST
It was sold. And society wants the glam of new - marketing.

True, compared to drug-free bodybuilders he still looks good.
love the old equiptment

Why did dorean yates came to Mike and after winning Mr olympia he praised Mike mentzer by taking his name

What was this plan? Sorry can you rephrase that question.
Mike looks like he’s got a hot date at a reasonably priced restaurant after this session! Yeah Mike!!! 🤣👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪💪
Mike Mentzer = Ned Flanders :)

I miss the old nautilus leg extentions, man those things used to BOMB thighs.
Alot of the equipment looks pretty crazy lol wish it was still about.
I love that, beyond ripped...shredded...Mentzer, then there's diced minced lol.
Why dont gyms have these machine anymore. Way more useful
Boyer looks great.
Boyer's form is really good in all of these videos. He does each exercise very deliberately.
Really? Looks like he’s throw the weight around to me. So much for the 2-1-4 Nautilus cadence.
@@robbuchheim6478 Boyer's form is a bit loose
The form police smh
Those were fast reps if we are talking true HIT style workouts but he did give great effort

Heavy Doody 💩💩💩
@seBlitz Yeah, I miss the Natilus Gym that used to be in my area. They have very good machines. Machines today seems to feel easy and smooth.
@Dan C this was from 1983.

anyone know if they still sell these machines somewhere?
wow i like this machine would like to try it
If this were a few years later, Mike would have told Boyer to add more weight and use a 4 second count to eliminate momentum.
❣🌷
Ok, so if nautilus promoted 2/4 rep cadence, why was Boyer flexing to beat the band in his training videos?
Does anyone know what killed Mike and his brother? I heard they both had unknown heart defects........?
Crystal meth.

left handed people very smart wow didnt know mike;)
Why so fast
Walter White on steroids
Do you think steroids had any baring on Mike & Ray's early death?
Obviously
i wouldve taken the 15.
any one know what year this was?
Replying 11 years after you posted the question, it was either 1982 or 1983.
Tell that to Franco Columbu... ( 5'4" )
Fuck you Schramm
Ehh? Momentum? Controlled cadence 4:1:4? Have a word with him, Mike!
I was thinking the same bro, what kind of workout is this ?
He was better than Arnold on that day, BUT, he still wasn't the best that day either.
Mike did steroid and methamphetamine and was a smoker so the combo of all those things may have had something to do with it.
Haven't you invented the barbell yet ? Hahahaha !!!
Wow this is old school work out 1975 yes where are the champion hide out at work
It was actually recorded in either 1982 or 1983.

I met Mentzer in 1979, just after he won the '78 Mr. Universe contest. Here you see, he lost all his gains. No train, no gain.
Hes busting out of his shirt here lol

more rest so fucking what? that's not how hypertrophy works..
