im 58 years old. I love everything from Judas Priest to Spandau Ballet but I swear to God this song is probably my favorite song of all time. Theres something about this song that makes the hairs on my back stand up like no other song I can think of. Cant explain it. Its just magical!
agree completely, Im 56, listen to a lot of different things as well .Best line ever written in a song - "And I need you more than want you , and I want you for all time..". The strings arrangement does it for me.
I'm 51, and this song from my childhood always stuck with me as a favorite. Like you, my listening is pretty eclectic, but this song always gets to me.
Agree
@@joejohnson3968 Yeah, the way the violins enter just before the line you reference above. So much music from our past (I'm 62) that we took for granted at the time, but you look back and realize they were absolute works of art. Thanks Glen, and may you rest well.
Totally agree , Jimmy Webb
Is a genius songwriter
Glenn.... well just the best ever ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Possibly the most beautiful song ever.
I was on a cross country trip with my cousins and we happened into a Kansas diner and this was playing on the jukebox and it was like a kick in the gut to me. I was like 14 then. The good old days.
Amazing that beautiful music like this can come from the brain, heart and soul of a mere mortal. Now it is immortal.
Wow. Just. Wow. No matter what I listen to, there is always Glen Campbell waiting in the wings. Great way to unwind and so much talent.
One thing l noticed is that the audience sat quiet and respectful to hear this lovely song. These days whenever someone sings the audience seems to yell and scream through the whole performance. Thanks to Glen Campbell for such a timeless classic.
So what about Beatlemania and Elvis?
Because he was such an excellent vocalist, Glen Campbell was an underrated guitarist ...... he was an exceptional lead guitarist.
Other way around. Check out the comments on any Glen Campbell, there is far more mention of his guitar playing.
@@reneleclerc6119 Those are mostly from hardcore Glen Campbell fans, who have knowledge about his career and his talents. To most people, Glen Campbell was an excellent singer who usually strummed chords on an acoustic guitar while he sang. Campbell himself occasionally played into this image, as he would sometimes throw his guitar behind his back after the first verse of a song, grab the microphone with his hands, and only sing for the second verse (such was the case when he played the song "Southern Nights" in concert.)
GlennCampbell had more talent in is pinky finger than the rest of us had in our entire bodies.
-Merle Haggard
Merle Haggard was my all time favorite. But if he says so, who am I to argue?
Na
Jimmy Webb isn't half bad either..
"And I need you more than want you and I want you for all-time." Man, that's beautiful
💯
Yes, so beautiful
Indeed it is!!! ♥️
At 15 I wore out my 45 of Wichita Lineman I loved the song so much. Here I am at 70 and it still moves me. A beautiful song written by Jimmy Webb and sung perfectly by Glen Campbell. ❤
The orchestration on this song is unmatched. Absolutely beautiful lyric and melody.
This song is just so ... evocative and winsome - longing, that's what I feel
Back when TV was more wholesome!
This song has what has to be the greatest lyric of any song “i need you more than want you and I want you for all time”.
I completely agree
Fully agree!
Jimmy Webb was a genius.
To think he could write a song like this for Glenn, then switch gears and write "Beautiful Balloon" for the 5th Dimension is mind boggling. And then "MacArthur Park", just to scratch the surface.
That line you quoted really is magical.
And the music!❤
The implications of the lyrics. “I need purpose, I’d prefer the purpose to be in service of you” this is the blue collar hero you’ll never meet. They want and honest, beneficial to people, kinda job.
James Howard Tull was my daddy. On 12-18-1973 he was electrocuted with 169,000 volts for 18 seconds. He was burned over 95% of his body, fell from 25 ft and landed in a setting position crushing his vertebra. He died five times dealing with that but worked another 33 years for Texas Power and light. Had no idea how important his accident was going to be and how much I learned from him from when I was ran over on a traffic stop. This song always has reminded me of my father going out when the stormy weather comes through and the power was off to make it better for everyone. Daddy's been gone 9 years almost 10 I think it hurts more now than it did then. Thank you Daddy for teaching me to be a man
😢
God bless James Howard Tull! They just don't make men like that anymore!
A real man doesn't become a cop. You get what you deserve, slave catcher.
I knew a very kind Lineman...as a child. I am Chiricahua...he was White. Very kind ...somber fello....hardworking man. Almost 50 years ago...seems like just yesterday...R.I.P. sir.
Your Dad was the real definition of a father. You will always remember and cherish that.
As an RnB fan this is randomly one of my favourite songs ever.. The imagery it conjures is just 👌🏽
I served on the USS Wichita AOR1, from 1975- 1978. This was our theme song. Played after every long term naval exercise over the ship's PA system, oftentimes at 1 am or later, it was always goosebumps and a sense of pride. We actually were "Wichita Linemen",and to this day the song brings me right back there to the South China Sea with my brothers.
Ex Royal Navy. I get what you say shipmate.
Great story, great memories. Thank you for your service Dan.
@@fyermun my sentiment exactly Brandon. Thank you for sharing your touching story Dan Tolman.
Wow!!! Incredible memories!!
You guys are heroes.
When I was 5 or 6, my dad took my mother to see Glen in concert. Glen was singing from inside the ropes of a boxing arena, and our seats were pretty far away. She wanted to get some good photos of him, so she asked me to come with her while she took some photos up front near the boxing ring. I remember her taking my hand and walking down the aisle, and near the ring, she started to take some photos. Anyhow, as my mom was standing there, Glen stopped between songs and said "Go ahead honey, I'll hold still for you." That moment really made her happy, and forever since has let me to admire his kindness.
It captures longing in such a visceral way that it triggers actual longing. A perfectly written song.
Well stated.
Very well put Mike . You are 100% correct.
Jimmy Webb should have got the Nobel prize ahead of Dylan
I agree wholeheartedly. This song has always moved me. It came out when I was a teen digging blues and rock and roll, and this was totally outside my usual music genre, but it moved me. I’m glad the song had such broad appeal it received wide AM and FM radio play. The music and lyric are perfectly matched somehow. Dreamy, urgent and powerful all at once. I don’t know who Jimmy Webb is, but this one is bloody genius! I’m going to find out. Glen Campbell’s voice was a great fit for Witchita Lineman, for sure.
So well-put! That's exactly what happens.
Beautiful. Thank you Jimmy Webb (song writer) and Glen Campbell.
If any country entertainer was ever the 'complete package' , it was Glen Campbell.
I don't like country - this ain't it - it is good.
"And I need you more than want you" such a lovely line in his song ❤
Glen was born to sing this song. I’ve heard it hundreds of time. So perfect.
Rest in Peace Glen Campbell! Gone but not forgotten!
I go back to this song at least once a year. The melody gets me every time, a classic.
Thank you 😊😊🤙❤️🍺😊😊😊Yup...🤙🍺🙏
yea to bad he was a woman beater...
Never forget him ❤
I wont forget him, it's hard to forget people who beat women.@@catherinethomas1276
Just beautiful and it never ages...
Bob Dylan once said “Wichita Lineman” was the greatest song ever written.
He may be right, but who really cares what that asshole says
I just read that.
@@drbobs8267🙋♀️same here. Hello, from South-central Penna.
I agree
I have to agree
Reminds me of a time when life was a happier experience and the world hadn’t yet gone completely mad. 😭
I completely agree! I look back at those days and we had problems for sure, but today people have lost their minds! Seems like our society is coming undone! Too bad we can't go back...I guess we can in away...in our own memories and listening to great music like this! Hope you have a great day!
People are still alright in real life. Just get off social media whatever it takes. Go outside. The world is still good and adventures to be had. Don’t miss it behind a damn screen.
My dad and his dad were both journeymen lineman.. makes me tear up how much they miss.. I i love you Dad!
Retro howdy 🤠 from coastal Mississippi. I saw this episode back in the 70's...l met Glen Campbell back in the day. Will always be one of my favourite ❤
This particular song never fails to transport me back to the good ole 70s and keeps that magical definitive sound in perpetuality.
Absolute perfection. Glen was a master. His vocals: superb! His guitar work....always effortless. I miss this level of song writing brilliance.
When i was homeless living in my car in Hollywood my friend played me the Glen Campbell track Wichita Lineman brought me to tears.... I love this song
I’m so lucky to have gotten to listen to all of these wonderful songs on the radio when they were hits!
can't think of anyone who could surpass GC in his incredible combination of guitar and voice talent
I am 77 years old n always will love his music
Hello Maryann..
All the comments I have read here, echo my sentiments so clearly. This song, Glen's voice, and his guitar-playing skills just take me back to my childhood, growing up in the 1960's and 1970's. Glen was a considerable part of the soundtrack of those
wonderful years. The deep emotion that Glen evokes so easily with his music is just astounding. Just timeless.
I knew Glen way back when we where just studio musicians. Played on his first 3 albums. He was so much more than just a great singer and songwriter.... He was a Great Man. Glen is what country music was and should still be. Story telling of life. Not a bunch of hip hop so called country music
Were you one of the wrecking crew?
True
cool, but let’s maybe not conflate hip hop with a lack a life’s storytelling?
was the diss at the end necessary?
I doubt it! I worked with the Wrecking Crew. I actually helped write this song. Glen had originally written “And it itches in the sun, sweating like a grape on the vine, man!”. I said to Glen in the middle of recording this: Sorry Glen, but that line is fantastically stupid! How about this: “And the Wichita Lineman…is still on the line”? Then I made a kind of Morris Code on my high string…doot de-doot de-doot.
If anybody said this is the greatest modern song, it would be difficult to dispute that.
One of a handful of ELITE ARTISTS the world has ever seen! Bob Dylan says this is the greatest lyrics and song performed by Campbell ! Pretty good praise ❤️❤️❤️✌️
Correction: he said it’s the greatest song ever written. Period.
it doesnt get better than this
a true classic, he was incredible and his show was great on television
His voice makes me cry, especially in this song. Something brings me to tears because it was part of my childhood and my parents are now deceased. RIP Mr. Campbell. You are sorely missed.❤🎸
Same here Lisa choking up right now 👍
I agree this is a special song.
I can totally relate to this. This song instantly transports me back to being young with my whole family there... I had no idea that I would lose some of them. You just never believe they won’t be there someday. This song just has something about it..
@@Vanasse1 I agree Karen. I've lost several relatives & friends. My dad use to take me hunting, fishing 🎣 and outdoors. We would travel & Glenn Campbell would be on the radio or his tape player, I miss him so. I'm glad & sad we share the same feelings even though we've never met. Thank you
@Honest Mark health issues, sorry.
I'm 56 years old and this song reminds me of my father
Reminds me of my Mum
People often say this is a great Jimmy Webb song - it is - the streamed consciousness of a lineman is a striking concept for a song - it's in a different league for me tho as a recording for 2 reasons..
1. because of the production & imagination of the arrangement
&
2. due to the sheer class of Glen Campbell's vocal - what a vocal !!!
Country music lives on , Jean and I were married in 1969, Glen Campbell was always on the radio, all our married lives Glen was always there. Glen Campbell will live on in his music and song. What a Legend.
I first heard this song when I was 10yrs old. when I turned 18 i became a lineman and for 35yrs that was my life and now I'm getting old but I've had a great life. Retired now and love it. Thanks Glenn..
Great story, thx for sharing

ABSOLUTELY A GOLDEN MASTERPIECE!
I love Jimmy Webb songs and none better to sing one is Glenn Campbell.❤
Every man can relate to this masterpiece and the hope that the one they love is still on the wire.Hay when I'm at my lowest I listen to the wire and somehow I can climb that pole again.Magical song rest in piece Glen
My mother passed recently, and this song was a favourite of hers, I can't listen to it without weeping! Thanks Glenn and thanks mum!!!
Sorry for you loss Julian ... lost my mom this year as well
God Bless.
My Condolences 🙏
Julian I am sorry for your loss. My Mom is getting up there in age and reading your post and thinking about losing my own Mother some day just brought a tear to my own eye. Thanks for sharing that.
❤
I'm 75. Have to be honest, can't stand country music, hate rock and roll. Never was even a fan of the Beatles or Stones. Even though that was my era & lived in Liverpool all my life. Always jazz & classics for me. Each to their own. But, this song & the way Glen Campbell sings it. My emotions go into overdrive. Lump in my throat; end up in tears. Sometimes a piece of music just does it. Thank
Whoa.
Americans think that because they loved the Beatles, the whole world did, which isn't true at all. I love old school country and I like rock n roll but I think the Stones and Led Zeppelin were better than the Beatles by a country mile. The Beatles could write but playing and singing weren't their forte at all, in fact I think I prefer almost every cover version of a Beatles song to the original.
1 of the few country songs my dad ❤s
Great song, great singer, perfect hair.
He would have been almost 84 years old. I can remember back in the mid 60s when he looked so young.... Unreal
My god.my family never missed the good time hour.i.was a kid but I loved him what a great man.i hope he's with god now and still singing
I was driving back from Sante Fe New Mexico in the winter of 1979 with someone I loved. It was very early in the morning, probably an hour from daybreak and it was very cold outside. She was asleep and I was feeling sad. Probably from being drunk, mean, self-centered.... the rule of many of my wasted days of youth. I turned on the radio, AM no doubt, and this song came on within seconds. I'll never forget how it made me feel because I still can feel it today. She remained sleeping and didn't see me wipe away the tears thankfully I thought. But I was going to change..... I swear.
Many, many years later maybe I have. But not in time for many things, many necessary regrets. You see for a moment I had understood I could be quite absent despite being so close. But the sun came up and such introspection was soon lost to the day.
Feeling in SRQ and thank you Glen Campbell.
Amazing story John,thx for sharing...
Wow! What a reflection! Much Love to you John.
Thank you both. The power of a great song when it strikes and emotional chord. Obviously this one did for me and will always do for me.
I am in Ireland love it too
John, many people in this world suffer from a lack of introspection. Clearly you are not one of them. The most valuable lesson I have learned in my 57 years is that it is important to look inside, learn from our faults, and move on. Don't linger in the past, it will tear at your heart until you can't take it anymore. Peace.
I was born in AZ, I will always miss Glen.
A song about some guy stringing phone lines across the country. Every Bell guy across Canada and the US sang this song because he made them somebody.
Best wishes from the UK. Absolutely fantastic piece of music.
"And I need you more than want you...and I want you for all time"...I gotta thank quarantine for letting me discover good music like this...
I love that line
You can thank Jimmy Webb for that breath taking line....I totally agree!!!
One of the best lines of all time
I must've heard this song 50 years ago as a kid and in the 70's...one of my favorites!
The trio A Girl Named Tom sang this song on The Voice and they were perfection. Glen would have been proud.
No one ever tried to emulate the vocal style. Such perfect diction. Throw in the brilliant guitar work and those sublime lyrics its why evolution created ears
The great Jimmy Webb wrote this timeless classic. Only Glen could have pulled off such brilliance. Saw this live when it was aired.
I feel privileged to have lived during such great music
And I need you more than want you... and I want you for all time. One of the best lyrics ever perhaps?
His magic is so effortless. But this comes after years of hard work and practice
Even factoring in all the accolades he's received over the years, I still consider Glen Campbell to be so very underrated. A prolific entertainer; an incomparable singer with perfect diction, timing, pitch, and with a natural smoothness to his voice. One of the best guitar players there ever has been. A writer, an actor, a comedian, a host. He acted with John Wayne in True Grit, as well as sang the theme song. His talent was tremendous, a gift from God. I will miss him so much--
I was only 10 years old when I heard about him from the TV. He was appearing on the Johnny Cash show as well as his own show and he haw. And certain Christmas specials. Used to have his own Christmas special. I agree with everything you said. I can't remember anyone as an Entertainer, who had his gifts.
Glen's musical gifts were from God. He put them to good use. Please don't anyone get me wrong, he worked very hard at it but his ability and potential came from God.
will you dullards please stop with comments about how "underrated" a performer was who sold _millions and millions_ of records across decades and generations?? Just stop. That level of ignorance is just overwhelming to the rest of us.
Just stop.
I agree. Glen is way more than just a cowboy. He is a musical virtuoso. He could do it all.
The absolute greatest ever
One of the best songs of all-time. Every time I hear it -goosebumps and tears. RIP Glen
Me, too. Wiping the memories off my cheeks as I type this.
I love this song - the lyrics are fantastic
I search every person who ever tried to cover this song, but it always brings me back to Glen Campbell. My father taught me this song when I was about 12 years old he could sing the crap out of it and he taught me how to play it then I learned how to sing itRIP Pops thank you so much and also to you, Mr. Glenn Campbell RIP, sir
Jimmy Webb - a beautiful genius.
What an arrangement! This can make a grown man cry. So touching & beautiful. RIP Glen
One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever known.
Yes this song sure is lovely
Absolutely correct
My all time favorite Glen Campbell song!
There’s just something about this song!! It’s hauntingly beautiful. The imagery. The loneliness. It’s just so pure. Glen was a Diamond. And so good looking, too.
You posted this 1yr ago, but it's still relevant particularly so after the last 2yrs.
@@ron8944 Thank you.
RIP Glen Campbell. Amazing singer. You will be missed.
He was #1
Awesome guitarist also. Just a great all around musician

I'm 58...used to watch this with my dad in the 60s. Glen Campbell's attitude in this song perfectly encapsulates my dad's love for my mom...thank you Glen Campbell, for what your music meant to my father.
I'll never forget Glen Campbell
A great man...
One of my favorite Glenn Campbell and Jimmy webb songs that this black detroiter would play over and over the strings and the music and melody were timeless thank you Jim webb for your music and Glenn for your vocal smash hit
Hello👋 Patricia. How are you doing? Hope you’re fine. I’m Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
It captures the yearning loneliness of every human heart.
Love whitetail lineman. This song gave me a deep vision of what life was meant to be! To need someone as much as wanting them is to epitome of true love if we are blessed to have as such
My dad loved this we had it at is funeral and when I listen to this it takes me back to my childhood
Simply amazing performance and vocals
what a beautiful song RIP Mr. Glen Campbell
I am 59 and still go back to my old days as a child. Songs of today will never be the same as in those days.
Hello👋 Maria. How are you doing? Hope you’re fine. I’m Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
This song reminds me of my partner of 32years...he was a linesman....he would pick me up and take me for road trips fixing broken lines and replacing light bulbs on overhead street lamps...I'm still in love with him today as I was when I first met him💖
Hello👋 sheree. How are you doing? Hope you’re fine. I’m Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Well. He won at life.
May God bless you both
sleep well glen ,thank you for your music.
This song takes me back to when I was a kid I am 57 years old now and this song touches me
The acoustic solo by Glen at 1.45 is top notch!
Yes, and on a 12 String !! Sounds great
Still playing this after all these years. Can't let it go. This song so simple yet it goes down deep in your psyche and soul.
This is the greatest song ever written.
Beautiful. R.I.P. Glen. ❤
Besides the distinctive voice and great guitar work...that line "I need you more than want you..." is the best line in any song I have ever heard. Thank you Mr.Campbell and Mr.Webb.
Probably one of the most subtle love songs ever written. I love the song as did my late dad, who passed last year he caught the virus. He loved Glens music and was always whistling. He introduced me to this song, to be honest if they play this at my funeral I will be a happy soul. I started guitar lessons when I was 12, a lot of the inspiration came from hearing Glen's records. I miss both of those good men - Glen and my dad Maurice.
Better times than these days.
When they filmed part of True Grit in Ridgeway Colorado… Glen Campbell and Kim Darby signed autographs at the local City Market in Montrose…. John Wayne’s booth remained empty as he thought he was above signing autographs …. Never will forget Mr Campbell’s kindness and true character for the fans . He signed an album for me the album was a duet with him and Bobbi Gentry …, I was 9 and was smiling for weeks later .
Why does this song make me cry every time I hear it? I just don't know. It must be the way Glenn sings it...God bless you lovely man.
Makes me cry a little, too
When this song came out I was only a year old. Recently I heard it as I was driving along the central coast of California and it made me cry. It reminded me of my dad who passed away a few months ago. I don't know why it reminded me of him and I have no idea how I know this song. But I remembered the whole thing and the arrangement is absolutely beautiful!
Hello, So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. How are you?
What a beautiful soul this man was. R.I.P. Mr. Campbell (1936 - 2017)
One of the greatest songs ever written...
Glen Campbell was genuinely modest but a brilliant musician, unlike so many of the music celebrities of today. I hesitate to call them "musicians."
