Although not as unknown as some of these names but his incredible striking sense and unrivaled positioning have always been overshadowed by the greats he played with. Zidane and Del Piero at Juve, Kaka and Shevchenko at Milan and Totti and others at international level.

Saying Carvalho started over Sergio Ramos at CB isn’t exactly true. In the 2010/11-season Ramos was still considered a RB, and he was of course starting almost every game for Real Madrid in that position. When Ramos was converted into a CB the next season, Carvalho wasn’t a regular starter anymore, and in the 2012/13-season (Carvalho’s last at Real Madrid) he had been overtaken by Varane in the pecking order as well.

Gilberto Silva at arsenal? Everyone was raving about the new kid (Fabregas) or during the invincible it was Patrick Vieira. Most people just don't know how great of a player he was.

Van Tiggelen was just one of the players, you could have named anyone in that '88 squad outside of van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Koeman. If you had to name anyone it should be Jan Wouters, the best player besides them. Had a great career, made a late career move to Bayern Munich and still of great value in his last years at PSV. And still, probably outside of Holland no one remembers him.

hard pressed to convince me that someone like Robert Pires or A Portuguese defender who played for a handful of the BIGGEST handful of clubs on planet earth, for almost 2 decades, are not recognized by real fans of the beautiful game as a pair of players who were the best of the best in their respective positions during the era they played in... I automatically think of someone who is on a squad filled w/world class talent which makes it hard to put your own specific type of talents much more difficult to show.
