The Nerdwriter is a series of video essays about art, culture, politics, philosophy and more. - Zábava
At a time when many video essays are going into the ninety minute zone, the Nerdwriter is keeping his videos at a tight average of under eight minutes. If this had been someone else we probably would have gotten "To understand where the paparazzi started, we have to go back a little bit: There was a massive explosion of energy that began expanding into infinity..."
A true masterpiece does not tell everything
Albert Camus
“But you didn’t even scratch the surface about why ___ is so important”
One of the reasons for that is that Nerdwriter is sticking to the subject at hand and not giving us "his opinions" on the subject as if they were facts, which so many reviewers and youtubers do now, making so much stuff on youtube truly cringy and unwatchable with how biased it is.
@@NelsonStJames most of those essay videos have a large focus, which takes a long time to get all the information out.
Sleek editing, cogent dive into something I knew nothing about. This is Nerdwriter in peak form. Great work.
Literally couldn't have sait it better myself
I found this so fascinating. I had just asked my dad the other week why they’re called “spaghetti westerns” and I found out they were all filmed in Italy.
rofl ive been watching them for decades, had no idea.
Actually, most of them were filmed in Spain! They're called "spaghetti Western" because the people involved in the making of the film were all from Italy, first and foremost Sergio Leone (greatest director) and Ennio Morricone (greatest composer)!
@@olmomecene I believe half of the crew had to be from Spain to obey the rules at the time.
@@benisrood Agreed on the crew but they had French and American and German stars often depending on the sort of co-production they had
So then what are taco westerns?
Someone nobody ever mentions is writer Ennio Flaiano, whom wrote the script for La dolce vita and came up with the name paparazzo. In his book "la solitudine del satiro" you can actually read and get a first person pov on via Veneto rise and downfall trough his eyes in the chapters called " the via veneto papers"
Clint Eastwood riding a scateboard is the best picture I've seen in my life.
The image of Mussolini with a "failure" arrow pointed at him is absolutely hilarious to me.
I just gave an exam on italian cinema from the 40's to the 70's... This video is really on point👌
A former music professor myself, I used to teach a course on jazz history, and West Coast (aka “Cool”) Jazz, while somewhat undeniably influenced by the slower pace of life in SoCal as compared to the hustle & bustle of New York, Chicago, and even NOLA, was irreparably influenced by Rome, Paris, and everywhere Hollywood went. Because even in music (or maybe that’s ESPECIALLY in music) the answer is, as always: Follow The Money. Some of the earliest pics of the Jazz greats passed out in alleys with needles in their arms came out of Rome.
My school teacher made us watch "Roma città aperta" on the last day before summer break. I hated Neorealism ever since. Thanks for restoring my curiosity for this genre. Much of the footage used in this video shows places I grew up in and it is a strage feeling knowing how important they used to be not only for us but worldwide.
@Morra Why didn't it age very well may I ask?
It's one thing to watch films in class (which, of course, is always fun!). It's another to actually discuss the film and ask questions of why it is the way it is. All of my favorite professors/teachers brought some sort of understanding and perspective to each film we watched and how it helped evolve the cinematic grammar we know today. My teachers didn't simply make us watch films because they were "classics". They taught us what they brought to the table to help us in understanding film, its history, and film making as a whole.
You hated the movement because of one movie or that was just the first neorealist movie you happened to hate?
I get so excited every time Nerdwriter uploads a new video. So much so that I won't watch it until i've cleared my headspace to make sure i can really savour every bit of it. Happy to say that I am satisfied.
I took an Italian cinema class in college, but I learned more from this video.
fax
Did you actually, though?
Love that you’re digging further into photographic history
I have never been this early before, but I had to immediately click on a Nerdwriter video as his work is wonderful.
That masking with the falling bombs on the “1943” shot was clean
Loved this video. It's quite relevant to me as I'm taking Italian right now, and we actually watched Bicycle Thieves in class.
Love Nerdwriter's concise and punchy video essays like these. I'm wondering though, why has there been a lack of motion graphics and key frame animations over the past year or so? Just a style switch?
This Piece of Nerdwriter1 makes the newly release documentary "The Princess" so much more as its all Historical reverence to the paparazzi and how they began and became a powerful yet entertaining part of history
As always, fantastic content! I now have a lot to research today haha
La Dolce Vita is a masterpiece. Fell absolutely in love with it.
Thank you for your work! This kinda clarity is now more needed than ever!
Every video you make has such good pacing, delivery, editing, and information. Keep up the good work!
Loved this! I've been meaning to rewatch The Bicycle Thieves lately and now there are some more to add to the list.
Hey! Glad you are still producing. Thanks!
i was about to take my mom to the local store but i asked her to wait for 7 minutes and 34 seconds as soon as i saw nerdwriter is back with yet another perfect video.
The American military’s wartime posters included the slogan “Mussolini is a simp”, it is believed this increased patriotism 8000%.
This is an undeniable historical fact.
@@acgeewhiz i googled it so no one has to and its true
I have not seen your videos for a while and wow, what an upgrade in terms of visuals and narration! Congrats! You were great before, but now it's like the next level.
Such an entertaining essay. Evan is just so good at what he does it blows my mind, brings tears to my eyes even if its a video on paparazzi. So glad Evan found his true calling, makes a world richer place.
Every now and then I'll rewatch a Nerdwriter1 video not for the info but just to appreciate the mastery of craft of the art of video essay making
A surprisingly fascinating little bit of history! Great work yet again.
Another wonderful and informative piece. Looking forward to your book!
A beautiful essay, thank you from Italy!
Another amazing video. Fantastic connections to tell the story. Right On!!!!!!
Haven’t watched yet but I fucking love Fellini. Studied him in college and fell in love with Italian cinema. Been watching since high school and love how I can still indulge my love of learning through this channel.
That Anita Page story. I swear to god, Mussolini was such a weirdo for being the stereotypical hypermasculine dictator. According to Romano Mussolini, one of his sons, he once witnessed him weeping while watching Disney's Snow White. This is documented in a 90s interview to him by La Repubblica (one of the major Italian newspapers) which is quite controversial due to his allegations of Walt Disney himself being there (something that of course the company has always denied).
To his (very little) credit, everyone cried at Snow White at the time, and the way we view crying at these things now is different than it was decades ago. But yeah, it contrasted with the hypermasculine and almost stoic image he build.
As an Italian, Mussolini wasn't just a dictator, he embedded himself and his rotten ideologies in the minds of Italians is such a way that we still have explicitly fascist parties running in politics and neo-fascism is sadly doing a comeback in the public's eye...
Yet, Mussolini didn't just build Cinecittà, he instituted the "Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia" a.k.a. one of the first nationally funded film schools of Europe... he also highly endorsed and was part of the immediate success of the Venice Film Festival. It's so sad to me that almost every major film related thing we have in Italy is a direct byproduct of fascism.
Free Speech leads to an honest discussion and if fascism wins that means fascism was the most convincing ideology. Notice how left wing and progressive ideas can only survive with extreme censorship and free spaces inevitably become right wing.
Look at it from a more positive perspective...an Italian institution and industry created for nefarious reasons was turned around and has become an important (and highly influential) part of film history.
nerdwriter is my absolute favorite video essay writer
Hiii your videos always brighten my day!!
The name Paparazzo is actually a common surname in the town of Catanzaro. In 1897, George Gissing was visiting the town and was hosted by a man named Coriolano Paparazzo. The writer used this name in his novel "By the Ionian Sea", and was later paid homage by Fellini in "La dolce vita". In the town there is still a plaque commemorating it: digilander.libero.it/vittoria110/Cultura/Paparazzo/lapide.jpg
I've seen all your videos on this channel Evan and in terms of your editing... this is one of your best ever.
Such clever use of google maps and the effects used with still photos really made an immersive experience.
Fascinating and as always, so well done.
Superb story telling. Watch and learn.
Rome - incredible, wonderful and spetacular city! Missing Rome (as well as Italy) a lot during the pandemic. Great video, man!
This was perfectly made in every aspect. I aspire for my video essays to be like this one!
I love how fast your stories start.
I love how he pronounces cine città, he’s working hard to get it right instead of americanizing it
Who was the dame with bow and arrow pointed at the paps? Amazing.
The usual amazing video from Nerdwriter!
With an "interesting" timing as Ron Galella, one of the most famous paparazzo died on the 03/05.
Very nuance and interesting!. I Saw " La Dolce Vita " this year and didnt understand the full context! Because of my lack of italian!. But this makes the picture clearer!. Im gonna watch it again!..
This was probably the best editing I've seen yet in a video essay.
Continuing to be one of my favorite youtubers. Thanks for the great content!
I kept avoiding this because I was like "Who gives a damn about paparazzi? They're the worst." but then I saw it was a Nerdwriter video I hadn't seen yet and immediately watched it. Wasn't disappointed. Really good stuff.
You always come up with an interesting content, as always you're the best.
Thank you for posting! Need more
Nerdwriter1 never misses! 💪
I love the old school nerdwriter vidoe, so short and interesting
You have a very good way to show your content, congratulations!
Absolutely loved this one. Particularly as my ex is Italian and I can relate to the stories she told.
And Fellini named the character Paparazzo because that's the Italian word for the annoying noise mosquitos make.
That s not true😂.
If you read Ennio Flaiano and his diary entries there's a few that tell about his collaboration with Fellini. He came up with the name Paparazzo and the core idea for La Dolce Vita, since Flaiano chronicled life in via Veneto well and some of the 'regulars' there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Via_Veneto_Papers
Neat!
Nerdwriter idk how often you read comments but where did you learn to edit. Overall just learn to create the videos the way you do and how can one learn about it.
Ketck Saracho, I think he learned it from SkillShare.
It's a good day when Nerdwriter uploads a video.
This is absolutely fascinating
Your videos are always amazing to watch! I was hoping you could do a video on Giotto? I think that would be very interesting to see. Keep doing great work
Could not be more excited for this book
I love that two of my favorite youtubers have made videos on Italy while I’m in Italy
Great video as always
I've never been a book reader but, that pre order my book triggered me!
Will there be an audio book available because your voice and oration is the charm!
AYYYEEEE HE’S BACK!!!
The on-screen captions are so good lol
Great episode!
BRAVO! Great video!
Very interesting! thank you Evan.
Wonderful video, thank you sir!
I never felt more sorry for an actor (Anita Page) I never heard of before until now.
Much love for your work man. Haven't seen a piece I don't like.
Thanks for the video
One day I'm gonna impress the shit out of a dinner table with the story of where "Paparazzi" came from. Deep dive into brilliance
This scene in Roma citta aperta... it always breaks my heart.
Your vids are really good. Just wish they were more frequent. :)
Italian film student here. This was a great video!
The writing for this video is flawless
Ooooooh that was good! Well done!
you always do good, dude
What's better than a good CZcams video? A good CZcams video with a movie recommendation
Good job, thank you very much 😊
This channel never disappoints.
What a wonderful video essay. Bravo and arrivederci!
Fantastic essey. Thanks 👍
This is it! the rigth script can give the hell of a movie out of this story... fascinating!!!
Can't wait to read your book Evan! Another great video essay! By the way, are you watching Better Call Saul?
That last episode ruined me.
@@dipperdandy Same.
In love with the font being used in this video, does anyone know what font this is?
New nerdwriter mornings are always good mornings
Well that sure explains a lot about them!
Well this was a very interesting answer of a question I never asked myself :D
'We're All Fanboys Now' really is the phrase that will keep on giving as popular cultural trends and communities rise and fall over time.
Brilliant video as always but "Bicycle thieves" was made in 1948 not 1945. Sorry for nitpicking. Keep up your work and thank you for a fascinating video essay.
Fascinating. Cool video
Really really interesting watch. Very well edited too
Does anyone have a source to substantiate that earnings made from production in Italy had to stay in Italy? Struggling to find a source...
Awesome video.
I had to come to my subscriptions area on CZcams to see this video, while my recommended area was full of garbage I didnt want to watch. What the hell! Glad I came here, LOVED this so much, always love your content
Never knew this, even as a film student!!
